Preston Ridlehuber And UGA

edit

I noticed on the page about UGA quarterbacks that Preston Ridlehuber was not listed. Why was he left out? 97.89.143.170 (talk) 00:04, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No page titled either UGA quarterback or UGA quarterbacks exists, so I don't know which page you're asking about. But whichever it is, it will have a link to its talk page. Please ask at the foot of that talk page. -- Hoary (talk) 00:57, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! Are you referring to List of Georgia Bulldogs starting quarterbacks? Whatever the article is, the best place to ask your question is on the article's talk page (e.g. Talk:List of Georgia Bulldogs starting quarterbacks). If you have reliable published sources that explain that Ridlehuber was a UGA quarterback, then please provide that as well. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 06:38, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that Lynn Hughes was the starter at least most of the time in 1964. While Ridlehuber did play in some games that season, I can't tell from the current sources if Ridlehuber ever started or came in to replace Hughes from time to time. 1965 is similar, with Kirby Moore rather than Hughes. The newspaper articles do sound like Ridlehuber started a number of games, but nowhere do they flat out say so. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:13, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite a letter published as a separate file on a newspaper's Web site?

edit

In the second para of Two-state solution § Non-governmental supporters of a two-state solution, I've written a sentence referring to a letter which has been published by the Washington Post on their Web site. I've cited both the Washington Post page which refers to the letter and the letter itself. Is that the correct way to do it? Misha Wolf (talk) 00:14, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think so, Misha Wolf. If the letter had received no coverage in reliable sources independent of the authors, then it would not be worth mentioning on Wikipedia. I think that citing the Washington Post's coverage of the letter justifies the inclusion. Cullen328 (talk) 06:53, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Misha Wolf (talk) 19:29, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please add a disambiguation widget

edit

I've come across a pair of Wikipedia articles needing disambiguation widgets and am not sufficiently confident an editor to create them. Please could someone else do it. The articles are A Land for All and A Land for All (organization). Thanks

Misha Wolf (talk) 01:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done, Misha Wolf. Nobody looking for the film would do so via a page titled "A Land for All (organization)", so I pointed-and-linked in only one direction rather than both. -- Hoary (talk) 05:12, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Misha Wolf (talk) 19:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A site named "Wikiwand.com" has essentially republished my Wikipedia entry into their advertising supported site, is this legit?

edit

I find my Wikipedia entries such as Earley Lake - Wikipedia has been totally copied with no attribution to https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Earley_Lake with tacky advertising imbedded. Is this legal/acceptable use? DannyBill7 (talk) 06:50, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, DannyBill7. Yes, this is both legal and acceptable. When you contribute content to Wikipedia, you release that content under a free Creative Commons license that allows anyone to re-use that content anywhere at any time for any purpose, including adding it to profit making advertiser supported websites. That includes overpriced books, posters, t-shirts and coffee mugs. Attribution is the only restriction, and Wikiwand attributes their content to Wikipedia and its editors. Please read Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks. Cullen328 (talk) 07:08, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Cullen328, OK by me, good to know. DannyBill7 (talk) 07:42, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DannyBill7: They say "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" and have a "W" icon at top of the page with a link to Earley Lake and its page history. That counts as attribution. MediaWiki:Wikimedia-copyrightwarning is displayed when you edit. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:32, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just for the hell of it, I looked at the Wikiwand copy of an article I wrote. I must admit, the (AI generated) "Summarize this article for a 10 year old" bit at the top gave me the biggest laugh I've had in a long time. Deor (talk) 20:13, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

how can i edit any wiki? Aamirkh103 (talk) 08:16, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to editing articles here, or other wikis? "Wiki" is a term for any type of user editable encyclopedia type website of which Wikipedia is one example. 331dot (talk) 10:51, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What idiots write these pages?

edit

Who write the crap on these pages? More to the point, who is paying these idiots to write this crap? 2A00:23C8:A900:3501:E49E:67ED:D5B3:C0C8 (talk) 11:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The clue is in the description of Wikipedia, in that it is an encyclopaedia that anyone can edit. No one is paid to do so. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:30, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'd put a *small* asterisk on this. It is possible within wikipedia's rules for someone to be paid to write an article by someone/something and then to submit it through the Articles for Creation process. Having said that, I'm not sure that it is any more clear with that asterisk on it.Naraht (talk) 15:08, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Naraht: In those instances, the article's talk page should indicate who is paying the editors. GoingBatty (talk) 16:43, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBattyTrue. But still an asterisk to the general statement.Naraht (talk) 16:51, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information

I want to access all data about janism available on wikipedia. What is the assured way of doing it? Sksandesara (talk) 13:05, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Best place to start is Janism.Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:07, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can also check out Category:Jainism. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 13:19, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've read the same question before (though perhaps it was about Jainism, with two "i"s). It got a good answer, too. 1.33.56.248 (talk) 13:35, 21 December 2023 (UTC).[reply]
@Sksandesara You asked this before (with the correct spelling, I think) in a thread now archived at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2023 December 11#Request for Information. If the answers there didn't fully assist you, then please be more specific about what you need and why. The "why" part will help us work out which alternative method would be best for you. How do I create a discussion page? This article doesn't have a discussion page (it's red). JackkBrown (talk) 14:34, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown, do you see a blue Start a discussion button when you click on the red link? 57.140.16.1 (talk) 14:38, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but I don't want to create a discussion, I simply want to create the page for those who want to start a new conversation. JackkBrown (talk) 14:41, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Creating a blank talk page simply to turn the red link into a blue link doesn't seem like a great thing to go around doing. Adding a WikiProject banner to the top would probably be useful, though - you could do that. Do you not see an edit or create button at the top of the page? 57.140.16.1 (talk) 14:49, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone who did want to start a discussion could do so by clicking on the redlink. If you are determined to make the page, consider adding appropriate Project links there, e.g. for Wikipedia:WikiProject Italy Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:50, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown   Added Talk:Graffe with {{WikiProject Food and Drink}}. I enjoy using Rater to do this. GoingBatty (talk) 16:37, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Updating Company Info

edit

Hello,

My name is Anna I am a Digital Coordinator for Limelife by Alcone. We would like to update information about the company and add photos as well. I attempted to make changes and was not sure if I was doing it incorrectly. Please let me know how to update correctly and add photos we have on our website. Thank you. Anna AnnaCbyAlcone (talk) 18:37, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bluntly: DON'T EVEN TRY! You are the worst possible person to make such edits. For further guidance, see this essay and more broadly this one. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:52, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Worse, someone from your company in 2021 rewrote the article about LimeLife, a women-oriented digital media company, replacing all the information on that page with information about your company. Such behavior is not appreciated on Wikipedia. StarryGrandma (talk) 19:16, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the response. Was it needed to be that rude? AnnaCbyAlcone (talk) 19:36, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AnnaCbyAlcone: I'm not sure which part of StarryGrandma's comment you could possibly construe to be rude. In any case, you should be aware of Wikipedia's stance on paid editors, which may explain the brusqueness you've experienced. Please be aware that articles are not owned by their subjects, and if enough negative information can be found in reliable sources, more often than not it will be added. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:10, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect Anna was referring to the rudeness of Mike's reply. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:35, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is why I like to encourage proper reply threading and indentation... —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:36, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
[Edit Conflict] Thing is, Anna, you're not the first, or the hundredth, or the thousandth, or probably the ten thousandth company publicist to want to, bluntly, misuse Wikipedia to present your company in the best possible light. Quite simply, doing so is completely against Wikipedia's core principles, which amongst other things demand strict neutrality and forbid promotion.
We editors, all unpaid volunteers, have become very tired of battling against this attempted subversion of the project, and as a professional "Digital Coordinator", you could and maybe should have found out about all this before even posting here. Forgive us if, sometimes, our tempers fray a little. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.205.111.170 (talk) 21:18, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly, you have committed not one, but two "offenses". First, you are an undisclosed paid editor, as my colleagues have mentioned, and we have developed combat fatigue on this issue. Your second "offence" is far more grave: you hijacked an article about a different subject. If you choose to try to create an article about your company, please start afresh, and we may be able to help you. Start by declaring your paid status (WP:PAID). Next, make sure your company is notable by our definition (WP:NCORP). Notability is mandatory and we cannot retain an article on a non-notable subject. Then proceed to WP:YFA to create a draft. -Arch dude (talk) 21:50, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  Note: The article in question has been reverted to a version prior to being hijacked. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 04:00, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think everyone commenting above, apart from Anna, needs to read WP:BITE, and to treat a good faith contributor with more respect.
@AnnaCbyAlcone: I'm sorry you have experienced this. What should have happened is that you should have been cordially invited to read Wikipedia:Contact us/Article subjects, and Wikipedia:FAQ/Article subjects, which were written especially for cases such as yours. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:35, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

References no. 10 and no. 17 present some problems. JackkBrown (talk) 19:39, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: If you click the blue "help" link it will explain the error. RudolfRed (talk) 19:42, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: The problem with reference #10 is the word "(contributor)". You introduced the error in reference #17 in this edit by adding <ref name=bradt/> without defining the reference. GoingBatty (talk) 22:46, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: it is strange, these two references I copied from other articles in this encyclopaedia. I hope to solve the problem, otherwise I will have to remove them both, which would be a shame (the more valid references, the better). JackkBrown (talk) 00:04, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter how their text originated; when used within a specific article, they are interacting only inside that article, so if they are named, that name has to be defined within the same article – nothing in the software will search the other 6.7 million articles in Wikipedia to see if there is an identically-named reference somewhere else: if that were so we would have to be impossibly creative with reference names. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.205.111.170 (talk) 02:45, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia is a guideline that encourages us to document where we've copied text from in the edit summary for attribution purposes. This search shows 8 articles with <ref name=bradt/>. Maybe you copied from the Cuisine of Abruzzo article? You can go to the article where you copied <ref name=bradt/>, copy the full reference, paste it into List of Italian dishes, and document the copy in your edit summary. GoingBatty (talk) 15:12, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: yes, Cuisine of Abruzzo. JackkBrown (talk) 15:17, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot archive posts from talk page due to blacklist warning

edit

On 18 December 2023, I deleted the 50 oldest posts on my talk page and tried to put them in my‎ Archive number 55, I was prevented doing so and got "Your edit was not saved because it contains a new external link to a site registered on Wikipedia's blacklist or Wikimedia's global blacklist." I'm not sure what this issue is. Could someone take a look and put it in archive 55 for me? Thank you, Thriley (talk) 22:46, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thriley, I could do it, but I'd have to do as much work as you would, so no. What I'd do would be to attempt to add the first half. If the attempt brought an error message, then I'd try to move just the first quarter. If that brought no error message, I'd know that the problem was in the second quarter. The problematic link would probably be conspicuous by this point; but if it wasn't, then I'd try to move the third eighth ... you get the idea. Anyway, once you've found the rogue link, you can space it into unusability: "racistfrothingatthemouth . com" or whatever. Or of course just delete it. -- Hoary (talk) 22:57, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. It’s just so strange as nearly all the posts are by bots. Could this possibly be an error? Thriley (talk) 23:07, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to get in touch with reviewer of a rejected draft?

edit

Hi Wikipedia,

I tried submitting an article on a subject I feel confident writing about: https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Draft:SAP_Sailing_Analytics. The submission got rejected, also after two rounds of updates trying to comply with the reviewers' suggestions. I don't think that a Ctrl-F search through the text body of a reference is a good way of finding out whether that reference actually confirms or supports the article's statements. I would like to discuss this with the author. However, being new to authoring a Wikipedia article, I don't know how to get in touch. Please assist.

Thanks and best, -- Axel Axeluhl (talk) 23:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Axeluhl, I see you posted on Johannes Maximilian's talk page today, but they haven't edited since yesterday, so hopefully they will respond in due course. I would give them a week, especially as it is nearly Christmas. They can also be emailed using the link on User:Johannes Maximilian. TSventon (talk) 23:53, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Axeluhl: Another option is to have the discussion on Draft talk:SAP Sailing Analytics, and invite all the reviewers to discuss in a single place. I see there is an unanswered question already at Draft talk:SAP Sailing Analytics. GoingBatty (talk) 15:29, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Art Venegas

edit

submitted a page about Art Venegas, the track and field coach. When I checked in today, I learned the page does not exist. Does this mean that the page is under review, or does it mean that you didn't receive my submission? Please let me know, as I believe Coach Venegas is very worthy of an article on your site.

Thank you for your help,

Eric Grow Eric-Dieter (talk) 23:30, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at your contributions, the only edit you made prior to your post here is to a sandbox of yours, which is a sample page. @Eric-Dieter, did you click "Publish changes"? ayakanaa ( t · c ) 00:35, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can find no trace of such a page in any of our logs. I guess you never saved it. I admit it's a bit confusing but you have to click "Publish page" to save a new draft page, and "Publish changes" to save changes to an existing draft. The buttons have the same labels in live articles and drafts. "Publish" means it becomes visible to everybody. Private drafts don't exist. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:44, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
