Problematic category

edit

The question has come up whether Bobby Fischer should be in Category:Jewish chess players. There has been some discussion of this at Talk:Bobby Fischer#Category:Jewish_chess_players, and I venture to say that we have not come to a conclusion. The circumstances are that he was born to a Jewish mother, but he explicitly rejected Judaism in adulthood. I wonder if there are general rules that can be followed with categories that are potentially problematic in this way. (I also wonder if the Help Desk is the most appropriate place for me to ask about this. If there is a better place, I'd be happy to go there.) Bruce leverett (talk) 02:24, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Bruce leverett: Where it was being discussed (on the talk page of the article) is the best place, since each individual subject will have different rationale for the categories. Since you brought it up, though, I'll weigh in there. Orville1974talk 03:53, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

help me convert the BS map to Route map Template:VIP Road
Saha ( talk ) 09:53, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Arnabsaha2212: Which article? Here is the BS page. -Arch dude (talk) 15:52, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: Template:VIP Road this one. the map is BS-map. i want to convert it into Routemap
Saha ( talk ) 16:23, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arnabsaha2212: you have still not provided a link to whatever "BS-map" is, and I am confused (my usual state, I admit). Apparently, you have a map somewhere named "BS-map", and you wish to convert it into a something named "Routemap" that is similar to Template:VIP Road, presumably to add to some article named ????. Is this correct? -Arch dude (talk)
@Arch dude: I made the map Template:VIP Road in BSmap format. but i want to change it into Routemap format. I want help regarding that. Saha ( talk ) 16:40, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arnabsaha2212:OK. You created {{VIP Road}}, and it uses {{BS-map}}, but you now wish to use {{Routemap}} instead. That is a fairly specialized area of expertise. I recommend you ask on the talk page of Template:Routemap, which is at Template talk:Routemap. If no answer after a day or so, ping some of the original creators of Template:Routemap, but remember that some editors take a break in the summer. -Arch dude (talk) 17:04, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: ok... thanks for the help. :) Saha ( talk ) 17:07, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can I download this?

edit

Please tell me if there is a violation of the rules with this file placement - https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/File:Pillintrip_logo.png - I also want to upload such a logo, but I don’t know if I’ll break the rules by doing so? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Webseon (talkcontribs) 12:29, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Webseon: this requires multiple answers. First: it follows the legal and technical rules for Commons, as it was uploaded by its creator under an appropriate license. This means that you may download, modify, and upload it under that license, and you may use it for any Wikipedia or non-Wikipedia purpose whatsoever if you attribute it. Second: it appears that you may be working on creating an article to use this image in. If so, that article is likely to be deleted. There is really only one requirement for an article: the subject must be notable by our definition. If the subject is notable, we can help you raise its quality. If the subject is not notable, we will delete it, even if it is the most beautiful article that has ever existed on Wikipedia in all other respects. For an organization, see WP:NCORP. -Arch dude (talk) 15:49, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Webseon: As a separate issue, If you are creating a new logo for any Wikipedia or non-Wikipedia reason, you should use a scalable format such as SVG instead of a bitmap format like PNG, because SVG remains pretty at all scales while PNG gets ugly if you expand or shrink it. Furthermore, The Pillintrip logo has essentially no "creative elements", so if you change the words and colors, You are free to claim that your new logo is your own work and you will not need to attribute it to the Pillintrip logo, unless you feel that the result really is visually similar to that logo. Note that trademark is separate from copyright and that laws and interpretations vary by jurisdiction.-Arch dude (talk) 16:46, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

editing the title of your own page

edit

ok so i was making the title of my own wikipedia page/article and I made a mistake and then accidentally pressed the submit title button and I edit in source edit on my nintendo 3DS XL. and then i made the page so how do i edit the title of my page/article in source edit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs) 15:03, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Captain Yoshi: A title change is accomplished with a page move, but before you get that far, I think you need to read Your First Article and use the new user tutorial, as I'm not sure that you understand what subjects merit articles on Wikipedia; Wikipedia is not a game guide. 331dot (talk) 15:06, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

no no what i mean as in source edit is the type of editing i use on wikipedia Captain Yoshi :P 15:11, 23 June 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs)

also when you edit wikipedia on nintendo 3DS XL it doesn't let you use visual editing and it doesn't let you use references and it doesn't let you use alot of things. Captain Yoshi :P 15:22, 23 June 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs)

@Captain Yoshi:As I said, changing the title of a page is accomplished with a page move, regardless of how you are editing or on what device. You can request a page move at Requested Moves, but as I said, your draft is not suitable as a Wikipedia article. 331dot (talk) 15:37, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Website parameter in citations

edit

So, I was previously citing websites like this in the website paremeter part of the cite template; if the URL was billboard.com, I put Billboard. I was looking at someone else's edits and realized that they were just repeating the website URL (and assumed that this was the correct way to do things). I went to fix a whole bunch of my references that way in this diff. Now I'm just confused about whether or not I was fixing anything, as I've seen both ways used and I'm not sure which method (or something else I haven't being doing) is correct. Clovermoss (talk) 16:01, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Clovermoss. The place to look for things like this is the Template itself: in this case Template:Cite web. If you look there, you will find:
  • website: Title of website; may be wikilinked. Displays in italics. Aliases: work
The URL should go in the 'url' parameter. --ColinFine (talk) 16:36, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: Okay. So what I was doing earlier was right (I'm going to self-revert the changes then). I'm happy I haven't been doing it wrong all this time, because it would have been a pain to go through all my past contributions to fix. Clovermoss (talk) 16:40, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Clovermoss: I see both types used a lot (ie. bbc.co.uk and BBC). I wouldn’t say it is very important which is used however, as said by ColinFine its probably more user-friendly to use the website name (BBC as opposed to bbc.co.uk). I hope that helps, Willbb234 (talk) 16:56, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)

Many of those 'things' are periodicals. When en.wiki has an article about the 'thing' it is relatively easy to decide what cs1|2 template and parameter to use for that 'thing':
these are magazines so {{cite magazine}} and |magazine=:
Billboard
Hollywood Reporter
JazzTimes
Loudwire
OnMilwaukee
Rolling Stone
Variety
these are newspapers so {{cite news}} and |newspaper=:
Boston Globe
Chicago Tribune
The New York Times
The Seattle Times
The Washington Post
and websites so {{cite web}} and |website=:
Ultimate Classic Rock – presumably the citation isn't to the eponymous radio program
I don't know about these:
NYS Music – claims it is 'New York's music news source' so {{cite news}} and |work=
Pitchfork – yeah, article title says 'website'; article prose says magazine; sigh, editors there need to straighten that up
The Daily Memphian – online newspaper so {{cite news}} and |newspaper=
I think that it is better to use the periodical's name when that is known. Periodical names are, I think, more easily read and understood than domain names (ajc.comThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

Patrick Beurard-Valdoye

edit

While moving a stub page about a living French poet from the sandbox, auto spelling changed the first part of the surname to an incorrect spelling before I was able to stop it. Can someone please help restore the correct spelling of Patrick Beurard-Valdoye from the current incorrect Patrick Beard-Valdoye, before it can be linked to the original French entry? Thank you.--Po Mieczu (talk) 17:31, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved it to Patrick Beurard-Valdoye without leaving a redirect. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:56, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Alfie Kilgour

edit

Alfie Kilgour — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlfieKilgour (talkcontribs) 17:48, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, is there a question you would like to ask? Willbb234 (talk) 17:58, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Note: There was an earlier version of this thread where the OP (stating they were Kilgour) raised issues with height / weight at Alfie Kilgour. That request was subsequently removed by them. As the height appears to be 'sourced' to Soccerway here, albeit as an external link. It will need independent reliable sourcing to change it. Weight does not appear to be mentioned in the current version of the page but is also in the Soccerway profile. Eagleash (talk) 18:13, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

edit

ok so i want to become a good faith contributor but i need a list of articles that have not been made yet and a list of articles that need to be edited it dosen't have to be a long list so can anybody put those 2 lists on my talk page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs) 20:16, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Captain Yoshi: You can visit the Community Portal which has lists of areas that need work. You may also want to use the new user tutorial to help you learn more about Wikipedia and editing. 331dot (talk) 20:22, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ok thanks. Captain Yoshi :P 20:28, 23 June 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs)

i need help

edit

ok so i want to make a new wikipedia page but im gonna need help with it so I need someone who is good with using references in editing and the page im gonna make is going to be about the pokemon Groudon so I only need one person to help me if you want to help tell me on my talk page so whos willing to help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs) 20:41, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you think that the article will get rejected it wont. Why? it'll have references and because I am an expert when it comes to Pokemon. - Captain Yoshi :P 20:59, 23 June 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs)

@Captain Yoshi: In order to have an article about an individual Pokemon, (like Pikachu), there must be significant coverage of it in independent reliable sources like the news which show how the Pokemon is notable. Pikachu merits an article because it is extensively used in films, promotional materials, and other outlets. That isn't the case with all Pokemon. 331dot (talk) 21:03, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well then that means if theres an article of Rayquaza then Rayquaza was in the news. Groudon was probably in the news when Pokemon Omega Ruby came out. - Captain Yoshi :P 21:10, 23 June 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs)

Then you should gather at least three independent reliable sources that have coverage of Groudon itself, not just as part of a game. Is Groudon extensively written about as a character? Is it the the featured aspect of a film? Does it get lots of news coverage for being used in advertising? Things like that. 331dot (talk) 21:21, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Captain Yoshi: Before you start, please take a look at this draft article on Porygon and its related talk page. Reviewing those will give you a better understanding of how difficult it can be to write an article about an individual Pokemon species. Even with all of the work and effort put into it, the article has still not met the requirements to be published in the mainspace (and most likely never will, because the subject of the article, Porygons, do not meet the the notability guidelines). Orville1974talk 21:23, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It wont be that difficult, since Groudon is pretty popular and is seen way more in commercials since it is a legendary. The Porygon article was rejected most likely because it isn't important to the Pokemon franchise. - Captain Yoshi :P 22:02, 23 June 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs)

Hi again @Captain Yoshi: This is what the Groudon article looked like[1] before it was merged and redirected to the List of generation III Pokémon. The advice at the Porygon Talk page will help focus your efforts on reliable sources, verifiability, and demonstrating Groudon's notability. If you can find enough significant coverage to meet Wikipedia's standards, you can start drafting your article by following Articles for Creation and Your First Article. Orville1974talk 22:14, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Are you good at referencing when it comes to editing? If you are, can you help me make the article? - Captain Yoshi :P 23:01, 23 June 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Yoshi (talkcontribs)

@Captain Yoshi: this page has all the help you'll need Help:Referencing for beginners. Please review the message I left on your talk about signing your post, you're still not doing it. - FlightTime (open channel) 23:10, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

theres one BIG problem: I edit on my nintendo 3DS and it DOES NOT LET YOU REFERENCE. - Captain Yoshi :P 23:18, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

In what way will it not allow you to type references. Does the keyboard not have the characters < and > to type <ref> ? Dbfirs 06:28, 24 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting a photo

edit

If anyone can help me, I am just trying to find out if I can add a photo of a wonderful Baculite specimen to the Baculite entry.

The piece, attributed to the Pierre Shale--by a field expert at U.C.'s Museum of Paleontology, seems rare and special because: of it's comparatively colorful, intact mother-of-pearl surface, as well as because it shows signs of having been "worked" and been a spirit/prestige item of a Coastanoan clan. It looks much different than those photos already displayed.

Thanks, to anyone who can advise me on just submitting a photo to an article, while leaving the text/substance of the article otherwise unchanged. Thanks, for source wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HBD Bear Area (talkcontribs) 23:29, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@HBD Bear Area: You can request an upload here WP:FFU. - FlightTime (open channel) 23:31, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, HBD Bear Area. If you took the picture yourself, so you hold the copyright, then you may upload it to Wikimedia Commons yourself, releasing it under an appropriate licence as you go. IIRC, when you have uploaded it to Commons, it will tell you what you need to do to add it to a Wikipedia article. See Help:Upload.
If it is not your image, then there are copyright questions: unless the copyright holder has already released it under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, you will need to get them to donate it in order to use it in Wikipedia: see donating copyright materials. --ColinFine (talk) 07:55, 24 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Merci, for the help. I'm not blissful about my ignorance. I found the thing in my own back yard and took my own photos. It's nice thing for people to see and I'll share the photo. I can be a pretty slow, distracted individual, but I'll try to learn my wiki manners/methods. Thanks, again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.110.4.30 (talk) 21:36, 24 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
