Welcome to WikiProject Metropolitan Museum of Art on the English Wikipedia! We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, including The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Cloisters, and The Met Breuer.

As an "encyclopedic museum" of world art history, this project aims to collaborate in worldwide GLAM efforts, partnering with individuals and groups interested in stronger coverage of global topics.

Project scope

The Met Fifth Avenue

The project's goals include editing, enhancing and creating new articles, multimedia, and metadata related to:

  1. The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Cloisters, and The Met Breuer
  2. Notable artworks, artifacts, and other items in the Met collection
  3. Notable artists and historic figures who have significant presence in the Met collection
  4. Art genres from across the world's cultures represented in the Met collection (example: Gold glass)

Project background

The Met Cloisters

Following an early photo hunt in 2009, the Thomas J. Watson Library GLAM project served as the main base of Met activity on Wikipedia from 2012-2015, and continues as an important resource and partner.

A GLAM-Wiki tour for WikiConference USA visitors was held in 2014, building up national connections. A Met Breuer tour was held with Wikimedia NYC members in 2016, emphasizing local outreach.

On February 7, 2017, the Met publicly launched its Open Access Initiative with Katherine Maher and its new Wikimedian-in-Residence Richard Knipel (Pharos).

Its goals include uploading the Met's entire public domain collections, the great majority of its holdings, as multimedia to Wikimedia Commons and with rich metadata using Wikidata (all under Creative Commons Zero or CC0), and encouraging work on notable artworks and other topics on Wikipedia through both creative global and local collaborations and edit-a-thons.

The Wikimedian-in-Residence Pharos aims to "Wiki-fy the Met, and Met-ify the Wiki", bringing together the complementary strengths of global volunteerism and institutional knowledge.
