This is a work in progress, started by Eitch. I'm not interested in the "contest" idea of the main page redesign project, and so I don't expect this to ever look perfect. However, I do think that hide/show boxes are the way to go, and I'm up for taking on some of the programming (though if it ends up being CSS, I'm no help). I'd love to hear what you think! (To help you imagine it without this red introduction, see User:Eitch/Main Page (no intro).)

The main change is putting everything in hide/show boxes, with the result that on the initial load all the sections can be seen without scrolling down ( Does it work? Discussion started here).

Still to do:

Fix TFP and Sisters - for some reason, the template I wrote doesn't like hiding tables. I've left the old TFP up for comparison. I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong. Can anyone figure it out the problem in my code?
Write a version of User:Eitch/Main Page/Framed hidden that supports multiple columns (so far, it supports a single column with multiple boxes, each of which has the same coloring).
Can someone figure out how to make the heights of the blue and the green tables independent of each other?
The width of Sisters is less than that of the sections above it (you can't appreciate this, since Sisters isn't hiding. The width of Languages is even less. Can someone figure out why?!?

~~The sister projects and other languages boxes should have the same color scheme - they're different to show two possibilities (discussion started here).~~

I moved the "other areas" links to the top banner - nubies are the ones who won't know about the links already, and so they should be prominent.

I need someone with better table skills to figure out why there's an a little white square below the Today's Featured Article and Today's Featured Picture introductions (the whole line the square's on shouldn't be there; discussion started here).

Can someone figure out why the "Recently featured" links aren't hiding along with Today's FA? (fixed!)

Specimen ballot from Lake County, Illinois

On November 3, 1964, Illinois chose all 177 members of the state's House of Representatives in a single at-large election. The government was required to draw new electoral districts before the election, each of which would choose three representatives, but both the legislative process and a special commission failed to produce a district map. As a result, the state's constitution mandated that all 177 representatives were to be elected from a statewide at-large district. The Republican Party and the Democratic Party each nominated 118 candidates to appear on the ballot (specimen pictured); voters were allowed to choose up to 177. All 118 Democratic candidates were elected, flipping the Illinois House of Representatives from its previous narrow Republican control, alongside the concurrent presidential election won by Democratic incumbent Lyndon B. The coconut (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the palm tree family, Arecaceae. Originally native to the Central Indo-Pacific, in the regions of Maritime Southeast Asia and Melanesia, coconuts are now found across the world due to human cultivation and dispersal. They are normally cultivated in hot and wet tropical climates. The term coconut also commonly refers to the seed and fruit of the coconut tree, which is botanically a drupe. The fruit has three layers including an edible white, fleshy endosperm and is filled with a liquid known as coconut water. The coconut thus played a critical role in the migration of Austronesian peoples across the Indian Ocean, as it provided a portable source of both food and water for long sea voyages. In modern times coconuts are used extensively in cooking and cuisine, using the raw flesh, the water or in alternative forms such as coconut milk and coconut butter. These coconuts, one whole and one halved, were grown in the Dominican Republic; this photograph was focus-stacked from 19 separate images.
