- No problem! If and when Kate's Tool is ever down again, don't hesistate to ask again - Titoxd and myself are developing more features involving more statistics, such as percent edit summary, etc., which will hopefully be completed soon. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 22:56, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
William-Adolphe Bouguereau gallery
editYou have in the past edited William-Adolphe Bouguereau. A related article, the William-Adolphe Bouguereau gallery has been nominated for deletion for violating WP:NOT (AfD here). A proposal to modify WP:NOT is here. Please join either or both conversations and comment as you see fit. Dsmdgold 16:47, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

editThanks for blocking that troublemaker. I think you're right that you should unblock at a later date, as no IP should really be blocked forever (except for open proxies of course). See you around. Canderson7 (talk) 18:44, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
what happened at encyclopedist's page?
editI saw your revert... Was it an imposter or something and I just didn't notice the difference in name? Or did Encyclopedist turn all The Three Faces of Eve on us? --Syrthiss 22:56, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
- Three Faces of Eve, Benedict Arnold, Quisling, Judas? No, no, no, no - maybe Jekyll and Hyde though. I would never turn like that, put too much work on here : ).....εγκυκλοπαίδεια* (talk) 23:03, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

- Wow, I was just grumbling today that I had never got a barnstar from anyone in the past 3+ years of editing, and low and behold! -- user:zanimum
Wow, I have given out several hundreds of these barnstars since I have been here, I have always been one to believe that people deserve rewards for their contributions, a little star isn;t much to ask for after all. : )
And since you have been here three years:
..you deserve this one most of all:

Templates like this one, that confusingly look too much like our sister project templates have been deleted in the past. It would save a lot of trouble if you would delete it yourself. -- Netoholic @ 08:12, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Robert Clark Young article
editYou recently made some edits to the Robert Clark Young and I wondered if you'd mind check it out again. A new editor is making what I consider to be a lot of POV edits to the article. I'm discussing this with the editor on the talk page but I'd be interested in getting your views on the issue (since you were obviously interested in the article before and could bring an outside view to the discussion). Thanks, --Alabamaboy 01:12, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
Tournament of Roses Parade
editHi. As part of cleaning up Special:CrossNamespaceLink, I've removed a link (really a note-to-self) on Tournament of Roses Parade (in the section "Post-Parade: A Showcase of Floats"). It looks like you've not worked on that section for more than a year ;) -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 03:21, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Images you've uploaded
editHi. A Wikipedia bot is in the process of removing a number of images that have been uploaded without proper image use tags. In some cases the images date back a year or two, before Wikipedia tightened its rules, and thus use outdated image tags. I've just rescued a couple of images related to Corner Gas which you uploaded ages ago. By rights the uploader should be given warning before the images are deleted, but it appears not to be happening. I thought I would give you a heads up. Essentially any image you uploaded in the past with the {{fairuse}} tag and simply said "deemed fair use" in the description are now potentially on the chopping block. You might want to check any favorite images to make sure they're properly tagged and described under the tightened rules. Cheers! 23skidoo 14:47, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- Also images like Image:Fursuit autumn fox hotel.jpg, which is too loosely sourced/licensed. You should probably go through all the images you have uploaded. Thue | talk 22:07, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Self revert
editDid you mean to revert yourself here? Broken S 21:27, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes I did, thanks for noticing that, BrokenSegue. I initially read the comment from Nature's reviewer to mean that the reference to Robert Broom was irrelevant, and should be removed, here they meant we should expand on it. Perfect proof why I should do more than skim instructions! -- user:zanimum
Changes made to semi-protection page
editYou reverted my edit on the Semi-protection page where I referenced Wikipedia:Timed article change stabilisation mechanism. Given you didn't add a comment, didn't talk to me on it, or do anything else; this seems to be a vandalisation. It seems you are violating NPOV at best. Would you care to explain?WolfKeeper 16:21, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Source needed for Image:Stockxchng internet browsers.jpg

- Thanks for letting me know, I've added the tag. -- user:zanimum
Hi! I couldn't help but notice that the ABC article I started and self nom-ed didn't last long in DYK. I was quite honored that it was chosen but rather disappointed that it didn't last very long at all... Was there something about it that made it unsuitable? I saw that the target text I put in the suggestion got rather mangled to the point that it didn't quite say what it should have. It was my first nomination so while trying to avoid WP:OWN about the whole thing, I'm still rather curious. Thanks! (I've set a watch here so feel free to respond here, I'll see it) ++Lar 03:52, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry about this all. ABC was actually put back onto the DYK a half-hour after my change, and stayed up for 7 hours after that. The minimum time for DYK to appear is six hours, and since there was a backlog of unused DYK facts, I automatically assumed that no one had updated the space for a while. -- user:zanimum
- No worries. Thanks for the explanation. Seems rather a thankless job, so thanks for doing it! And it was up long enough to get a bunch of good edits from a variety of other folks, so that's a plus too! (I am watching here, you don't need to copy over to my talk page, but thanks for that anyway.)... ++Lar 23:07, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
DYK
editPlease follow the instructions updating DYK, you replaced a fresh template 4 hours too early.--nixie 04:08, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry about that, I assumed that the template hadn't been updated in a while, based on the great mass of unused facts, from multiple days, and failed to look at the update timer. -- user:zanimum
City hall
editYou must be from my neck of the forest. I got the city hall pic from here If you look closely, you can see that the page was either removed or renamed. I hope that helps. --Jay (Reply) 22:29, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
BrickWiki
editAnswered there but answering here too... Thanks for the idea/reminder. BW has some (minor but cool) custom MediaWiki extensions. Losing them would be a bummer but might be worth it. We had thought of it before, and that was why we didn't pursue it then. Do you have involvement with WikiCities or should we pursue other channels to investigate? Thanks! (if it makes sense, feel free to email me, I'll copy the admins/'crats of BW in my reply. I am just a user with high edit count there, not an admin) ++Lar 16:20, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- Having a Wikicity myself (wag.wikicities.com), I know you can make basic adjustments to MediaWiki as an admin on a particular project, and I can't imagine them not letting you add on any extra stuff. I don't have any connection with Wikicities, but I am a Wikimedia Foundation press contact/Wikipedia sysops/one of only seven "accredited reporters" on Wikinews, so I'm fairly well favoured by the establishment, it seems. Angela would be the one to talk to, she's sort of the general manager of the project, having co-founded it with Jimmy Wales. -- user:zanimum

Wikijunior Spanish to English Translation Request
editHi, I found a translation request started by you to translate Wikijunior from Spanish into English, but the Spanish page is blank. Is this supposed to be an English to Spanish translation, or am I missing something? --Dorje Shedrub 16:06, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- Ooops, I actually meant from English into Spanish. If you mind translating e to s, give me a couple minutes to update the article. Thanks! -- user:zanimum
My Spanish really isn't good enough - I was just browsing out of curiosity, and thought that I should let you know. Sounds like a good project though, and I hope somebody will claim it. --Dorje Shedrub
- Okay, thanks anyway! -- user:zanimum
Hi there. Just wondering, but why did you revert my edit to this article? The members of the advisory council save for Kyle Pruett clearly meet the standard for speedy deletion (CSD A7). In addition, you're only supposed to use the rollback feature for combatting vandalism, not for good faith edits. Regards, howcheng {chat} 00:17, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- Not about Sesame Beginnings, but close enough to not warrent an extra section: You seem to be copping it a bit sweet over at the AfD for Daniel R. Anderson et alii, partly from me. Just wanted to make sure you weren't taking it personally. However, seeing that you've been around for donkey's years, I'm sure you're fine! I've made a placeholder at Wikipedia_talk:Notability (people)#Academics if you'd like to contribute. - brenneman(t)(c) 00:14, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Wikispecies logo
editHey there,
Thanks for sheparding my logo concept through the process and adding some awesome shadowing to the 3d version. Sorry I wasn't responsive to your emails in the Fall. I have a new baby and a new job.
- -)
jk 06:12, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Jeremy, congratulations on becoming a father. Actually, I wasn't response for the 3D version, it was Zephram Stark. I just reuploaded it to Wikicommons. I personally would have loved if the DNA stands had straighter edges, just like your original image. The new logo's being spread over the projects slowly; it's already been used on an image for the current fundraising campaign. -- user:zanimum
The brownstone architecture....
editHello Nicholas :))
In the article "Sesame Street/History of the show"
"The brownstone architecture of Sesame Street, as well as the concept of neighbors from different backgrounds living in the same area and sharing their life experiences, is based on a neighborhood in Brooklyn called Brooklyn Heights, where the creators of Sesame Street lived when the show began." The first part of this paragraph—the architecture and the concept—obviously refers to features of the Sesame Street TV program, regardless of italics. The second part goes on to say that these features of the show are based on a real-life neighborhood in New York City where the producers of the show lived. This all makes sense and is not confusing.
Your recent edit, "The brownstone architecture of Sesame Street, New York City, as well as the concept of neighbors from different backgrounds living in the same area and sharing their life experiences, is based on a neighborhood in Brooklyn called Brooklyn Heights, where the creators of Sesame Street lived when the show began" seems to say that the brownstone architecture of a neighborhood in New York City is based upon a neighborhood in Brooklyn Heights, New York City. That could not be the intent of your edit, because the statement would then have no relevance at all to the Sesame Street article. Would you please explain to me what you mean by this edit; I assure you that I am working in the spirit of Wikipedia to help bring this article to FA status. --RogerK 22:19, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for your non-reply. I appreciate your non-help and non-interest. If all Wikipedians were like you, we'd all be doing something else, wouldn't we? --RogerK 04:10, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
- Was that absolutely necessary, Roger? I'm in my final year of college, and have constant projects, due each week throughout the year. The week you first posted about the brownstone, I was busy being interviewed by a internationally noted journalism magazine in Canada, and the week you posted this comment, I was being interviewed by a college newspaper. This week, I'm preparing to appear on television show Homepage, CP24, a news channel for all of Southern Ontario. (tbc, comment in progess) -- user:zanimum
- I sincerely apologize. I didn't consider that you might be indisposed. You were here on the 10th of January, but perhaps you didn't check your user page at the time. I assumed that you had. Please forgive me.
- I suppose that one other factor influenced my decision to make this comment. I have tried to make quality edits to this article over many months, and much of my work has been incorporated, which is pleasing to me, because I am rewarded by the acceptance of my work by my peers; my goal is to help. On one occasion that I remember, you reverted my edits, made in good faith with regard to the subheading "Muppets", without so much as a comment. I guess that made me feel somewhat neglected.
- I also checked your page before I made the comment. It says that you are an Admin. Perhaps I felt that an Admin here in Wikipedia would be likely to reply in a more timely manner.
- As for me, my alarm goes off at 5 AM, and I return home at 6 PM. I have a wife and two children at home, and what little time I can find I devote to Wikipedia.
- Your friend in the spirit of Wikipedia :) --RogerK 04:36, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Please fix the copyright tagging on this image. It was tagged as a movie poster. I'm pretty sure thats not what it is. :) If you need help, just reply here and I'll give you a hand. --Gmaxwell 06:54, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know, Gmaxwell. The image was once deleted (don't ask me why), another user uploaded a pic of King Kong with the exact same file name, and then I uploaded this, and I guess my new descript and caption that I put in the summary box didn't work. -- user:zanimum
- More odd then it being deleted... is that someone would upload a picture of King Kong (correctly tagged no less) with that file name. ... I don't even want to know. --Gmaxwell 19:13, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- It was because the image was deleted, but the image code wasn't, like I've demonstrated here. Click on the link, you'll get a "No file by this name exists; you can upload it." As they were just really a newbie, they did. Anyway, it doesn't happen too often, thankfully. -- user:zanimum

Image:Francescadani Soul Calibur 2.jpg has been listed as a possible copyright violation
editYou state that the above image is used by permission and is CC licenced. Could you please correct the attribution on the picture to whichever of the two is accurate? Hipocrite - «Talk» 19:05, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- The image was accidentally deleted, and by the time it was, and I reuploaded, the availablitiy of using permission photos were gone. I talked to Zephir, and she explicitly told me that I could change this image to the cc-by-nd license. -- user:zanimum
- I'd like to believe you, but you're obviously lying somewhere at the other image of yours I tagged, which you tagged as cc-by-nd, then as permission, and then as promotional, but which is obviously commercially valuable and not PD. Please clarify the copyright status on all your uploaded images, or they will be deleted. Hipocrite - «Talk» 21:33, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Another Toronto Wikipedian
editHi, I'm a newbie to Wikipedia. I've created a new username; I left a message as oreopoj before on the Wikimedia Canada page, but I couldn't remember my login so I just created a new account. I'm still learning how to use the wiki environment. Anyways, I live in the downtown core, pretty close to the university. I'm a masters student in biomedical engineeing, but I have an undergraduate backgound in physics from McMaster. Say hi to me on my discussion page.--Johnoreo 07:09, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Johnoreo, welcome! Just so you know, U of T almost got the 2006 Wikimania convention, it wasn't Harvard stepping in at the last minute. We should probably start planning a invitation message on Meta, for Wikimedia Canada, to try and get the entire Canadian Wikimedian community involved. -- user:zanimum
Newbie Question

- We're psychic. Or not.
- First off, your user page is a redlink... user:Chloe Wong. Tell us what interests you, maybe a bit about yourself. Secondly, this is your contributions page, which shows every edit you've made. Every user has one, here's mine and Wales here's the one for Jimbo, who founded Wikipedia. Any other questions, send them my way, I'll be more than happy to answer. -- user:zanimum
Charlie Rose
editI'm actually going to tape a Charlie Rose show this week. As I understand it, though, this is some sort of special episode and not the normal show. Anyhow, they've also given me a standing interview to come in and be interviewed whenever I can get to New York. We almost arranged this last fall, but it fell through when Charlie had to leave town suddenly.--Jimbo Wales 09:13, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, great to hear that, I can't wait to see it! -- user:zanimum
answer to your query
editMy colleagues, friends, and family told me that the Wikipedia is unreliable, and no better than internet chat rooms. I disagreed with them. I had used Wikipedia as a reference; then, I decided that I would contribute my time and effort without remuneration, with no emolument, as a public service, to add information to articles. My additions to Apple Computer, although factual and backed by references, were wiped out, and I was given insults: called a "fool", a "sockpuppet" although I always signed in (so that was not a valid accusation), told I was "crowing about gaining from investments" (which I had not; I do not have money to invest), and told that I was "annoying people" by contributing to articles. What a sophomoric, cowardly attitude; insiders who call themselves "experienced editors" are controlling Wikipedia. It is not free. I was hopeful, but now I know that I was really naive, and my associates were correct: Wikipedia is indeed like any other internet chat room. Donations of time, effort, and money to Wikipedia? I think not! DeveloperFrom1983 08:26, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
- Not a valid accusation? Wikipedia:Requests for CheckUser :- CheckUser confirms that user:DeveloperFrom1983 (talk • contribs) is a sockpuppet of user:MathStatWoman (talk • contribs). Kelly Martin (talk) 17:11, 15 January 2006 (UTC) Graham 01:12, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Are you User:Abcancer or what? Melchoir 18:12, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- Whoa, no, I don't have any sockpuppets. I was just on Wikipedia at the time that Abcancer started adding dozens of articles. I was working on cleanup of these articles, and I split these bios off to seperate pages, from the initial page they were on. -- user:zanimum
- Ah! Well, then, my apologies. I guess you need a bit more of the good ol' copyright paranoia, eh? Melchoir 22:58, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- I guess so. Abcancer's talk page looks like the faculty asked him to post the info on Wikipedia. Perhaps we could actually just ask for them to explicitly tell us that they'll make it available as GFDL? -- user:zanimum
- You're welcome to try, but Abcancer has refused to discuss his actions so far. If the material is GFDLed, some of the biographies would be good additions, with a little work; but the university advertisements would still have to go. Melchoir 17:55, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Edit campaign
editGo on an edit campaign man. Nearly half the users have images as mascots on their user pages. You ll lose the war Any way, whats it for you if we use such images. It is a free encyclopedia. Batzarro 17:11, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- Free does not mean "anyone can do anything". We are still governed by US Federal law, as we host the site out of St. Petersburg FL. The last thing Wikipedia wants is to have one of its users break the law, even if a relatively minor one, and end up putting us out of business, with a lawsuit on our lamp. It gives me no personal satisfaction to delete images on pages, but if we need to do this to survive, so be it. You can still wade through the thousands of free images on Wikimedia Commons, and add those to your user page, or created your own original works. But rules are rules, there's no getting around them. -- user:zanimum
Articles for creation
editBTW, you don't have to humour people on the Afc page, just delete the article suggestions immediately, if they are of no merit. -- user:zanimum
- Good idea. I have to admit Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation hasn't come up with any very clear guidelines on when straight deletion is called for. Tearlach 09:45, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed. I basically look to see if the contributor seems innocent, and might be coaxed into improving. If not, I just release the canons at it! The creation of the page was necessarily sudden, it would have been great if Jimmy had let at least a few other people in on its creation, a few days before, so they could have done the initial ironing out. It has worked remarkably well, and since the new formatting for the page, I've noticed more vandal-types being confused away from messing with the system. Talk to you later! -- user:zanimum

Sockpuppets, fair use incident
editMeeting fair use doctrine (was "Vandalism")
editWhy did you delete my Britney Spears upload and vandalize my user page? Batzarro 16:39, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- First off, the Britney pick you uploaded was from a commercial photographer for a wire service; fair use images must be images created with the direct intention of promoting the subject. See point 2 of Wikipedia's fair use policy. For all images on your userpage, those are blatantly against the fair use doctrine. See point 9 of Wikipedia's fair use policy. As time goes by, all such instances will be eliminated from userpages, you just happen to be one of the earliest to be affected. -- user:zanimum

- For all images on your userpage, those are blatantly against the fair use doctrine. See point 9 of Wikipedia's fair use policy. As time goes by, all such instances will be eliminated from userpages, you just happen to be one of the earliest to be affected. May I ask, are you a sock-puppet for Batzarro? You copy his user page, and have not made one single edit to anything but your userpage, his userpage, and my userpage. Wikipedia is not a social community, it is a project to collect information in one source. -- user:zanimum
Other comments from Batzarro
editHey you are a serious GOODY 2 shoes vandal. I was using the britney pic on MY page until some idiot named kooorooo added it to britneys page and u had to revert the photos on my page.
HJey,many users use fair images on their user pages. YOU cant be reverting all of us so lets leave it alone. Batzarro 16:50, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I and others can be reverting every fair use image off userpages. Lead me to some other users that fail to comply with Wikipedia's fair use policy #8, and I will deal with their pages also. -- user:zanimum
Sockpuppet acquisation
editHEY whether i am a sockpuppet or impersonator is none of your business. I only edit my own page and browse. How come, both of us are logged on at the same time if we are sockpuppets.buzz off.
- Do you intend to make edits to the project itself? If not, your userpage is simply wasting space on our servers. To browse the project, you do not need an account. As for you "how", you could simply have two different browsers open, each logged into a different account, or you could be logging in and out of both accounts rapidly. Also, please sign your posts. -- user:zanimum

Image use
editSo many other user s are doing this man .Why cant they. PS:/y did you revert my useful edits? Kooorooo 17:08, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
As I've been explaining to the two other users, it's against the law. Fair use doctrine allows copyrighten info to be used under these circumstances... Wikipedia:Fair_use#Fair_use_policy. As you can see in point #9, we can't use fair use on user pages. Only recently has there been serious discussion on the Wikipedia mailing list about this, and concensus is that we should not allow such images. As for Britney's pick, as much as I liked it, and felt it a superior image to what was/is now there, it too is against fair use law. The image was taken by a commercial photographer. His/her entire income involves selling the picture to the media; if the picture is shown all over the internet, there's no point in the media buying it, and he/she doesn't make money. Fair use only covers PR shots and the like. When a photographer is hired by, say Britney's record label, the copyright of the image is owned by the label, not the photographer. Since the record label wants her pic everywhere it can be, it is in their best interests to let us use it to promote her. -- user:zanimum
Heated complaints
editI got some rather heated complaints that your userpage contains about three "fair use" images at the bottom of your userpage. Can you look into it? Sjakkalle (Check!) 08:19, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I apparently missed cleaning them off, before I went around to others, enforcing Wikipedia's laws. They've been turned into links. Thanks for letting me know, Sjakkalle. -- user:zanimum
Thanks. Sorry for the trouble I might have caused with unprotecting and reprotecting Batzarro's userpage. Sjakkalle (Check!) 13:08, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

- My apologies on leaving the fair use images on, I focus on editing Wikipedia in positive and large amounts, and don't usually narcissistically fawn over my userpage. They were hidden at the bottom, and I missed them. They have been removed now, and are simply links to these milestone edits. -- user:zanimum
Re: Reverts
editThanks for your message. I use Lupin's popups tool, so his pages are on my watchlist and I saw the deletions. Checking it out there was clearly a problem, so I reverted. I looked through some of the contribs of User:Kooorooo and it seems that he actually caught some valid fair-use vio's, but seeing your talk page and the discussions on WP:AN / WP:ANI I see that he and his cohorts seem to be up to no good. I will probably do a bit more checking I think. --Cactus.man ✍ 14:06, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- Some of the uploads he made were definitely valid fair use, he just doesn't seem to ever upload them for the articles, only for his userpage. -- user:zanimum
- You might also keep an eye on User:Zanee. He/she removed some fair use images from User:Mil Falcon's userpage, but also clobbered some gfdl images from commons and added a kkk template. I only mention it here because he/she also made a comment on Batzarro's page which implies a link. --Syrthiss 14:14, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

- Hey, I dont remember where I got the picture, I think it would be better If I deleted it. How would I go upon doing that? Sorry, Kinda new at this.
- Hi, don't worry about it. I'm pretty sure that this was a PR picture, and not a photo for a magazine photoshoot. If you were to want a pic deleted, just add {{speedy}} to the pic's info page. In the future though, remember to cite where you found things. -- user:zanimum
Thanks! I added the speedy thing! Next time, Ill remember to save the page from where I got it. Thanks again! :) user:Spark9270
- Your sure you want it deleted? It's a good pic, and we can use publicity photos in the English Wikipedia. We can keep it. I've been able to find other shots that are definitely from this shoot, but not this one in particular. I'd personally keep it, but it is up to you. -- user:zanimum

Therefore, I am going to revert your changes to User:Batzarro's userpage.--Vidkun 14:32, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
I have re-looked at the issue, and recognize there are potential fair use issues with a number of the pictures on the userboxes. I will not be reverting, however, the recommendation to discuss with a user before editing their userpage still stands.--Vidkun 14:36, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- So what happens if the user does not agree with the changes, despite them being part of both Wikipedia's rules, and US law? Also, the content of Wikipedia:User page is only a guideline, not policy. Had the content of the site not been against Wikipedia policy, I would leave it up, no matter how offense or off-topic it was. Additionally, this user constantly ignores the fair use policies, and has called me things including a "Motherfucker", and created sockpuppets of me, called Zanimum2 and [User:Zanee|Zanee], both of which claimed to be KKK members, etc. -- user:zanimum

Image Tagging Image:Idol laura gissara.jpg
editThis image may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Idol laura gissara.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.Rossrs 12:34, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Your block of User:Felbeast2
editThe block is slightly broken, since you appear to have blocked for 3 hours and then indefinite with no unblock inbetween, as normal the shorter takes effect... --pgk(talk) 21:01, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
- The three hour block was a slip of the mouse, I did mean indefinite. Does the greater block not just "cancel out" the 3 hour one? -- user:zanimum
- No the shorter block takes effect, what you are actually doing is setting a point to unblock (rather than a block length), setting a longer one doesn't remove the earlier one, so when the earlier one is up it unblocks and resets any other block. You have to unblock and reblock to be effective. --pgk(talk) 21:06, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, didn't realise that. Does this look right? -- user:zanimum

- Hello Dylan, sorry for any inconvience the last couple days may have caused you.
- One week ago, exact, I found out that a user named Batzarro had uploaded a photograph to Wikipedia, for the exclusive purpose of showing it on his userpage. As the image was not a publicity shot or screenshot, it was not fair use, and could not be on Wikipedia under any circumstances. However, the fact it was on his user page was even worse, as no fair use images are allowed on userpages, by an obscure but rigid Wikipedia policy. I removed the image from his page and another user's page; the other user was actually a second account he had.
- Anyway, he sets up a bunch of accounts to take down images, blaming me all the way. In most cases, he took down images that had free licenses, and could be used under any circumstances. I and a few other admins have been trying to clean up after Batzarro and his "sockpuppet" user accounts. He leaves a rather noticable trail, but still one that needs diligence to follow. All of his known sockpuppet accounts have been block indefinitely.
- I have no intention of blocking anyone for using fair use images. The only reason he and his sockpuppet army were blocked, was because of their distruptiveness, and lack of actual contribution to the project.
- I will not personally remove fair use images from your page, if you choose to re-add them, as a token of understanding. However, try and limit your image use on userpages to images like the self-created RENT graphic, or anything found on Wikimedia Commons. Thanks! -- user:zanimum

Question about Speedy Delete
editHowdy, I noticed that a page, Stanley Chodorow, was speedily deleted. I think this was in err, although I don't know of a way to contact the admin who deleted it (since it was speedied). At the very least, deleting the page about the former Provost from the University of Pennsylvaia should require an AfD discussion, I would think. Is there a way of checking why the page was speedied? Many thanks, --Hansnesse 02:58, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- Hi... user:Doc glasgow deleted the article, with the explaination CSD A7. This means, "Unremarkable people or groups. An article about a real person, group of people, band or club that does not assert the importance or significance of its subject. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to AFD instead." I've undeleted it, and will allow you to develop the article further, to prove its worth. -- user:zanimum

Hi Zanimum! Re: TTC Subway Stations
editAs a relative newbie to Wikipedia, one of my first couple edits were of the TTC subway stations that I most use, that is: Islington, Kipling, and St. George.
While looking through the entire transit line articles, I noticed you uploaded some nice photos for Old Mill at night. I myself uploaded photos for Kiping and Islington subway station, and was wondering, if you still live in the area, if you were interested in supplying all TTC stations with a photo or two. =)
Secondly, I noticed that you released your photos under public domain. As I am very unfamiliar with licensing of images, I simply copied the licence for the pictures on the "St. George" page, which was {{GDFL}}. I was wondering what the difference was, and if personal photos of government property can actually be listed under GDFL!
Thanks! Kareeser|Talk! 04:23, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
P.S. You can reply here or at my talk page, I'll check both =)
- Hi Kareeser! I might be able to do this eventually, especially if there is a college strike, as anticipated. The fact it's on government property is fine, unless you're trying to make a profit off them. Actually, the best way to upload photos is to put them on "Wikimedia Commons". This essentially allows any Wikimedia project in any language to access the same file of the photo, instead of each uploading a different copy of the same file. My personal favourite, and one of the best licenses to go with is {{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}. It gives people multiple licenses to work with, and unlike PD, is legal is all countries. (PD images by living people are not recognized as being so in some foreign countries. That not to say it's illegal, and you be arrested if you travel there! It's just that they don't recognize it as actually legal.) -- user:zanimum
Image copyright problem with Image:North brampton hospital in the works.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:North brampton hospital in the works.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Longhair 21:37, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Truthiness - a Good Article
editThanks for the nod to Truthiness, Zanimum! - Reaverdrop 01:33, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
- No prob, it's a good article. I'm hoping in the next couple weeks it can be worked up to Featured Article status. It would be really cool if Stephen mentioned the article on air, even if he panned the site. -- user:zanimum
- A follow-up question - the Truthiness article includes Template:Colbert, which has been proposed for deletion. The delete votes outnumber the keep votes, and I am planning on deleting it soon. Since you tagged Truthiness as a good article with the Colbert template, do you think eliminating it would improve the article? - Reaverdrop 00:04, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Main page image
editHi Zanimum. The image you put on the Main Page is a fair use image. We've a general practice of not using FU images on the Main Page since they aren't in their relevant articles and we have no blanket rationale for their use. We're trying to claim we can use them for encyclopedic uses rather than news-media purposes after all.
Can you find an alternative, free, image? The country's flag is usually reliable — we seem to have PD or GFDL images for nearly every country. Thanks. -Splashtalk 23:51, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- This image of Stephen was a substitute for an image someone put up, that had no source whatsoever, and was almost guaranteed not to be the GFDL license claimed. -- user:zanimum
- Yes....but the current picture is fair use. Could you change it? -Splashtalk 00:10, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- Cheers. The reason I mentioned it here rather than just doing it myself was that quite a few admins accidentally put FU images on the Main Page, and I figure a talk page note is more effective in the future than an edit summary they may never see. Thanks again (and good choice of picture!). -Splashtalk 00:19, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Seigenthaler
editI see you created the first edits for the first non-libelous, non-copy vio article about John Seigenthaler Sr. For that, I award you this barnstar. -- user:zanimum
- Thanks! My first-ever barnstar, actually. It's kind of a funny story--I'd completely forgotten about it when the news broke, until a couple weeks after the fact I went into the archives and read the Signpost article, and was quite taken aback to find myself discussed in it. Eventually it all came back to me--I was pretty new at the time, and looked up Seigenthaler by chance because I had him confused with his son. As soon as I read the article it was obviously a copyvio, and being new I didn't yet know about WP:CP, so I just blanked it and rewrote it from scratch. I never checked the history; I had no idea what was lurking back there. It's interesting--on the one hand, I would have approached it differently if it had happened a month later and I'd known more about policy. On the other hand, it all kinda worked out in a way, and as you point out, my version was the first-ever legitimate article him (and is now the first edit in the article history). Such is life on the wiki, I guess. Anyway, thanks--I appreciate the recognition! Chick Bowen 22:51, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

- Wait, which AOL ip has never had a block against it? According to the block log, the IP I'm on right now has had several blocks?--152.163.100.69 01:46, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yet this AOL IP has never had a block against it ever. -- user:zanimum
- This is besides the point isn't it? I mean, you're not supposed to level blocks greater than 15 minutes on AOL users anyway--152.163.100.69 01:38, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
So if every page you load, you get a new IP address, why are you afraid of telling me your username? You're obviously able to edit on all of these IP addresses, you should be able to edit in your user account. -- user:zanimum
- AOL doesn't have completly unique IP ranges, it cycles, eventually I'll hit another page where I have the same IP again--152.163.100.69 02:05, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- Do you know which exact IP was blocked? Or, is it instead your username itself that was blocked? -- user:zanimum
- this one, the one you gave a 48 block to for some reason--152.163.100.69 02:23, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- There, done. -- user:zanimum
- Yep, sorry I forgot that I didn't mention what the ip was in the first post, but I wasn't origionally sure if it was an autoblock, or a block aimed at a specific ip--152.163.100.69 02:38, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Canada Free Press article about Wikipedia: Freemasonry link to Kofi Annan's father disappears from Wikipedia
editThank you for your contributions to Judi McLeod.
Judi McLeod has published another article about Wikipedia. Freemasonry link to Kofi Annan's father disappears from Wikipedia
Do you know more about this? McLeod's article doesn't tell us what date the claim was first posted. I can't find any recent changes on Kofi Annan. A discussion has begun on the relevant talk page. TheKMan went through 542 revisions to this article, from the first on 03:06, 23 September 2001 to the last at 01:43, 8 February 2006. None of those revisions have any mention of the word "freemason".
Were there any covert article deletions?
It is possible McLeod may have confused Wikipedia with this website
I really would like to get to the bottom of this. I left a note on Jimbo's talk page but have not heard back. If you can't help, can you recomment a particular SysOp I should contact? --Cyberboomer 23:48, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, this article is how I discovered her. I'm probably the most suited sysop for the job. I am the Canadian press contact and the Canadian representative of the newly founded Communications Committee for the Wikimedia Foundation. Kofi Annan's article has never been deleted, so no edits are hidden. There is no possible way, within the confines of the MediaWiki software Wikipedia uses, that edits can be manually hidden, even by Jimmy Wales himself.
- I don't believe she confused us with William Shaw Cross' site, as that still mentions the Freemason theory. I'll cross post this response to the talk page, so we can all work on a response for me to send out to her, on behalf of the org. -- user:zanimum
- Thank you for your reply. I was worried nobody would care. I will continue this discussion on the Kofi Annan discussion page. --Cyberboomer 19:54, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
Wikipdia Meetup and Torontonian
editHey, Nick. Another Torontonian Wikipedian here. Have you heard of any upcoming meetup in Toronto? And What's your general idea of the Toronto media towards Wikipedia? I am not a reporter of any sort. However such information would be very useful as the Chinese Wikipedia is geering up for a general meeting in the coming summer. Please email me if you would not like to discuss here. I.H.S.V. (talk) 18:34, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
- Well, there's this page Wikipedia:Meetup/Toronto, but nothing solid's been organized yet.
- The Star is cautious, but its Ideas section seems to adore us. The Globe seems neutral, not really caring unless something big happens against us news wise. I don't even know if The Sun has heard of us. I'm sure they have, just never seen them print anything.
- As for TV, I've personally promoted the project on CP24's Homepage and internationally on the Toronto filmed Call for Help. George Strombolopolis of The Hour seems impartial at worse to us, but I think at least supports the project for informal information. CBC Radio has covered the Nature study results, and was fairly well-balanced in our favour.
- The Chinese Wikipedia's general meeting... is that in China itself, or Canadian contributors to it? Curious how Toronto media and zh.wikipedia relate... were you wanting to know whether the meetup might be covered locally? BTW, you might want to join the meta:Wikimedia Canada club that just started its formation. We're going to try and, among many other things, organize meetups. -- user:zanimum

editOops...I guess there was one I missed. My bad. Well, unfortunately, the site has gone down, so I will have to replace it with another. For the record, the site used to be at [1].--み使い Mitsukai 03:05, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- Great, thank you for replacing the image! -- user:zanimum1
... is about to be deleted. Kaldari 02:44, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
- What is the purpose of a sockpuppet for all this? -- user:zanimum
- I'm sorry, but I don't understand what your reply means at all. Your article has been nominated for deletion (not by me) and will be deleted in 3 hours. If you would like to save it from deletion, simply remove the prod template from the article. Kaldari 03:13, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
- Not by you? I presumed when you were contacting me about the impending deletion, that you were "user:Gimme a reason to keep this. -- user:zanimum
- I'm actually one of the admins that closes out the deletions. I was going through the list of impending expirations (proposed deletion works by expiration rather than voting) and I noticed that you had never been contacted about your article being proposed for deletion. I just thought you might want to know about it in case you wanted to save the article, which it looks like you did. Kaldari 14:58, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

- Yes, thank you, I now have gained a better understanding of this project. However, do you know if "Gimme" is an actual user, or is he/she indeed a sockpuppet? -- user:zanimum
- I have no idea. Kaldari 17:13, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Wikimedia Canada
editI don't think it is a good idea to establish a Wikimedia Canada chapter, it only serves to fragmentize en:wikipedia. Currently there is only one English language en:wikipedia with nearly one million entries. There are many English speaking countries, England, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Canada etc. There is no US:Wikipedia nor Au:wikipedia why need a CA:wikipedia ??
One can find all about Canada in en:wikipedia. If you put Canadian related articles in ca:wikepedia, the net result will be far less people reading these article. Gisling 19:19, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm afraid you're slightly mistaken about Wikimedia Canada's (WMC) purpose. These are a few points about WMC's planned operations.
- In the last donation drive, CDN$11,473.05 was donated by our nation. None of that was tax-deductable, as it was donated to an American charity. People donating within Canada will now be able to get tax receipts.
- We'll be able to better organize programs to encourage the development of Wikipedia/Wikisource/Wiktionary in native languages that are loosing ground in an Anglocentric world.
- We'll organize meetups, to encourage the community aspect of the project.
- It becomes easier to plan representation at local events or conferences.
- Increased voice on matters presented to the board.
- Start projects to encourage new Canadian content. Encourage local historical groups, museums, town councils, boards of trade to add local info.
- Within the projects, increase Canadian content in internationally relevant articles.
- Occasionally take up moderate political causes that benefit the Wikimedia Foundation, such as loosening Crown copyright.
- While we will have a website for WMC, it will only be to organize these activities, not create a seperate resource. Also, we are out to promote Canada not only in English Wikimedia projects, but also French, and to a lesser extent native languages or any other language. -- user:zanimum

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Movie date movie lookalike.jpg)
editThis media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Movie date movie lookalike.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that your image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If your image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why your image was deleted. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Dethomas 07:36, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Dolly pic
editRelated to a picture you added in the Dolly Parton article, back in 04. Not sure if this has anything to do with some of the other "Fair Use" notes that I've seen in your talk page (you're not alone), but I'm a little concerned about a great image you added to the Dolly Parton article. The current tag says "Note: Please do not use this tag," etc., and there's no detailed rationale as to why it was considered fair use when it was added. It's a good image, and I updated the talk page for the article to see if anyone else can get the source copyright or come up with a rationale, but I thought I'd ask you if you wanted to contribute as well, since you made that edit. I tried to find the source, but I couldn't. Your choice, no big whoop. Durty Willy 03:23, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Possible impersonation on Wikipedia
editOn the talk:Rachel Marsden page user:Gordon Walsh claims to be the Managing Editor of the Toronto Sun. user: 70.25.152.39 whose identity is no secret to many of us, claims to have spoken to the real Gordon Walsh who denies ever posting to Wikipedia. Can you please take time out of your busy schedule and phone the Toronto Sun and find out whether this is correct? Thanks. --Cyberboomer 23:13, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
