image uploading

Dear Sir,

Thank you for helping this article to be uploaded. Can you help me in uploading an image that can go with this? I don't unedrstand the technicalities behind image upload.

Please do advise.

Thank you once again,

Regards.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anamika1234 (talkcontribs) 23:45, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

  1. Have you checked whether you have the copyright for the image? That is important. Otherwise, they will not accept your upload. If you had taken photo, fine. Otherwise, you need to get release from whoever owns copyright.
  2. Next, it may be best to upload to Wikipedia Commons and then use it in this article. I am not sure about your knowledge of computers, but if you have good knowledge the different help pages in this English Wikipedia or Commons can help you (you can fine link to Commons from the main page of Wikipedia).
  3. If you are not clear about that, please send me the image by email and I will do it for you. Email me the image from Wikipedia or get to my alternate email. For alternate email go to my external web pages, for which there is a link from User:VasuVR page (hosted in geocities) and send me an email from that site. Sorry for this convoluted options. If what I said is confusing, reply here with specific questions and we can work it out.

Kurai Onrum Illai and Lakshmikanthan Murder Case

Hi! Could you please help me in maintaining these two articles. I've expanded these articles and nominated them for a DYK, but I am not able to find enough sources to add as inline citaions. It'll be great if you could find and add some-RavichandarMy coffee shop 08:01, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

I will give it a try, but have been a bit busy in the past 2-3 weeks. Full day classes plus work and regular stuff is taking full time out of me. Sorry about that, but will see what I can do. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 08:28, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
By the way, I think that references mentioning that MS Subbulakshmi sang Kurai Onrum Illai in United Nations is most likely wrong. C Rajagopalachari's Hymn was sung and not his composition, to my knowledge. I will check with my dad who has the original double-LP of the concert. I also have seen the double CD of the concert, but pretty much sure that Kurai Onrum Illai was not in it. One site that mentions about the Hymn sung by MSS at United Nations has not mentioned this song! FYI and further research of references. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 16:27, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

"multiple issues" on David Acomba article

After noticing the warning message "This article or section has multiple issues" on the article about David Acomba, I have made some changes, especially adding references to back up the content. Can the warning be removed, or are there still issues that need to be fixed? I am a wiki newbie so any specific suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Northabbott (talk) 17:37, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

The article looks better and the two areas seem to be covered. The article definitely needs more improvement, but it does not have issues with wikify steps or the general cleanup. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 00:55, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
What is the process for having the warning tag removed from the top of the article? Are there more steps that need to be done, or will the tag now come off?

Northabbott (talk) 22:29, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Everything on any page is from the content of the page only, or related to whatever is the content. So, the notice is also a template included at top of the article, in this case an {{issue}} template. You can remove this template - {{issues|wikify=January 2009|cleanup=January 2009}} - or whatever is similar to that at top of page and the notice will go away. Please note that such notices also add the pages to certain categories, like Category:Articles needing additional references from February 2007, to help volunteers to regularly look at those categories and work on the articles. When the notice is removed, then those kinds of changes are also made - removal from related categories. Hope this helps. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 00:44, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

categories

Hello Vasu, thanks for contacting me. I am removing overcategorisation in music topics. Please see this: [1]

As you will see, where cat A is a subcategory of cat B, it is better to select only the lowest level (A) which is applicable. I hope you will agree that this rule, while it may make favourite articles seem as though they have been down-graded, in fact makes the category system far more useful and logical. Please do stay in touch - you can see from my contributions this thing has taken days, and some people simply do hostile reverts without asking.... Redheylin (talk) 02:58, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

I have a feeling that you have not gone through and understood Duplicate categorization rule. It very clearly states that in some cases you will have entries in both parent and child category. Also, treat categories as sets of information. For example, Carnatic rāga should have categories Category:Ragas and Category:Indian classical music, even though Carnatic raga is a special case. This perfectly fits into distinguised sub-category rule.
Please look at user perspective and not programmer perspective. When a user tries to look up all articles in category Ragas, we would like them to see Carnatic Ragas article also in the list. They need not check - Oh, this has subcategories also. I have to check all those to get more information that I may be interested in. That is poor user-friendliness. Same argument for Indian classical music category. A high level article about Carnatic Ragas fits well into that category and of interest for that category.
So, your action, though is mostly good, but many cases are wrong as well. For example, I want Ragas category included with the | characters included, so that it appears in top of list within category in article Carnatic rāga. Yes, there could be some that is over-categorization, but please don't do to this level of removing ALL but 1 category. It is totally unhelpful and unwarranted - and I will go to extent of incorrect. To further explain, read on.
If Tala is included ONLY in its own category, then we are losing it! It should appear in Hindustani music and Carnatic music categories, at minimum. It is an Indian classic music terminology. Please understand the reason for categories again.
Let us take musicians for example, they are included in various categories even though they are all derived in some way - but in different hierarchies/ branches of the category tree! Someone is a Tamil singer, a Carnatic singer, Padma Bhushan recipient, People from Tamil Nadu, Padma Bhushan recipients from Tamil Nadu, etc. From your argument, just by keeping Tamil Singer, should be sufficient or Padma Bhushan recipients from Tamil Nadu should be sufficient, because others are higher??? Sorry. I want to see the person's article in Tamil Singers definitely. I want to see it in ALL the others I have mentioned.
In my guess, please put back about 75% of your changes and do not create too much work for others in reverting. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 04:34, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
distinguished subcategories "are subsets which have some characteristic of interest, such as Best Actor Academy Award winners as a subcategory of Film actors.... It is useful to state in category descriptions whether or not a given category is a distinguished subcategory of a parent category."
"Carnatic raga" is wholly a subset of raga. "Raga" is wholly a subset of "Indian classical music". None of these cats is identified as "distinguished". I appreciate your personal feelings regarding Wiki policy, and suggest you propose that policy be altered. I myself cannot alter it!

Redheylin (talk) 04:49, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

People may not have had time to add specific Category level information - whether it is distinguished or not. So, you have to understand the spirit. Carnatic Ragas is a distinguished sub-category of Ragas. Please!! Just because it is not mentioned in the category, don't act like a bureaucrat (not in Wiki bureaucrat sense) - just adding red-tape and chaos. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 06:32, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
BTW, as far as tala is concerned, I myself created this category yesterday. It stands alongside raga in "ICM" category, and will also be in "Rhythm", as raga will be in "melody" and "scale". - You say; "Oh, this has subcategories also. I have to check all those to get more information that I may be interested in. That is poor user-friendliness." IN this case, all subcats should be stopped. I cannot do this! Rather, the use of lower categories is EXACTLY to prevent the need for the delving into subcats that you dislike. This happens BECAUSE things have been categorised at too high a level.Redheylin (talk) 04:53, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Hypothetical "distinguished categories" - "Ragas recorded by Hariprasad", "Talas mentioned in Natya Shastra" - these are cats that, by their nature, stand separate from any possible heirarchical tree. Redheylin (talk) 05:06, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Please do not worry about just the 2 examples. Think of ALL your edits. In my opinion about 75% of category removals are wrong, even as per Wikipedia policy. No amount of personal justification will be enough to change a consensus of 10s of editors who have worked on the tens of articles you have edited. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 06:32, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Hello Vasu - first let me say; it is very unwise to threaten "edit war" as you have done several times. It puts you immediately in the wrong, particularly when the matter is a clear-cut wiki policy. As for the other editors, they are welcome to contact me, but I cannot give any different answer, nor can I trace the mechanism by which you have established consensus, though it would be true to say, I think, that Indian editors are in general more prone to over-categorise, why I do not know. I'd urge you to seek administrative advice upon this issue before proceeding, particularly since you assert that the edits are non-policy. I recognise your great work in music editing and your deep feelings - but a great many music articles are written by enthusiasts who regard pages as their own property. I also recognise that there is a tremendous amount of work to be done in this field. Particularly, there is a great tendency to write repetitive, non-neutral articles without references on this subject. I'd be very grateful to co-operate with you on the arduous and demanding task of bringing the subject of Carnatic music up to wiki standards. It is not an option to bring them to your or my standards. Redheylin (talk) 22:56, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Please read again properly. I am not "threatening" revert war. I am trying to look into the future and foresee an edit war that is impending from your actions. It is not me, I foresee reverting, either. I have already said that about 25% of your removals are correct. I agree with them. I will revert some of the changes you made (have already done some, but don't have the time to go through everything now). There is over categorization at times. I also think most of your comments on enthusiastic work are related to Biographies (fan club type sites) and not articles about general information of Indian music. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 02:12, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Particularly, I see there are many references to raga lakshana but no page devoted to this. I wonder if you would like to help with this. It is important to remember that this is an English language affair and one should not leave terms unreferenced and untranslated. But it would take a long time to change every page (and the hundreds of editors would be upset!) SO it is best to make the page and link all pages to it. Would you like to? Redheylin (talk) 01:05, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Regarding Raga Lakshana I have not found any definitive definitions with references. I, of course, do not have a Carnatic Music library with me and have to rely on the limited books I have. As you probably know, Carnatic Music and Hindustani music have lot of things transferred from Guru to Sishya, many times by word of mouth and repeated practice in presence of the previous generation. It is not clearly defined. Many Gamakams in various ragams are purely learnt by listening. There is no alternative. Now, if we want to include a description of that in Wikipedia it is (a) difficult to really come up with a good one and more importantly (b) to come up with reliable references and verifiable sources for such a definition. If you think it is not futile and they can be found, I hope you can work on it. With my limited resources I do not think this is an easy task and hence will not be working on it. If others would like to remove the term Raga lakshana from all articles, that is fine with me. On that count probably more can be removed too (as long as we are in removal mode and not addition mode).
If the majority of the editors are going to interpret the policy opposite to what I think makes good sense for the article, I will just stay away from those articles. I would like to contribute rather than write something that does not make sense.
Coming back to the categorisation issue. The Wikipedia spirit of policy is clearly outlined as:
Categories should be useful for readers to find and navigate sets of related articles. They should be the categories under which readers would most likely look if they were not sure of where to find an article on a given subject.. (from same page which we have referred to earlier in this thread).
So, if something goes against this spirit, just because some other statement is interpreted strictly, I think an incorrect edit is being made. Wikipedia also says clearly that rules are not cast in stone. Everything has to be towards better user experience, search experience, etc. If some article is in only 1 category deep down in the hierarchy, then it can be looked up only through search & not likely to be found by looking up higher level categories. That is not at all good.
Finally, anyone who looks up my edits on talk pages will see that every edit that is reverting a previous edit that is controversial has been preceded a clear dialogue with the editor, including this thread. And even after that anyone wishes to place me in the wrong from their point of view of Wikipedia point of view, using just a few words out of context, it is most likely their loss, not mine. I have always been elaborate in my talk page edits everywhere in Wikipedia, not short and cryptic. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 02:12, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Hi again. Re. types of article - yes, American rock fans are serious offenders, but not the only ones. East Europeans who have a strong nationalist identity with their folk music - Hare Krishnas - just now a Javanese music theory buff and the writer of Sonata Theory - have all reverted point blank, some with extreme hostility. Still, I have recategorised hundreds of articles (and understand why others have given up!) Of course it often involves ADDING cats.
You are being very reasonable - so all I can suggest is that we go together to the correct admins and ask and abide by the decision. I would not be doing this if I did not think it necessary and desirable. Since we both want the same outcome, let us not fall out but be friends and colleagues.
I understand about the oral tradition, but must say the problem does not end with music. I spent a lot of time editing all of the articles on tirumurai and the nayanars, and it was hard to find any quotes and references - just endless repetitions, how great, how holy these poets are, and many theories about how the Tamil should look in English, maybe three or four different spellings in a short article. Just a few hours ago I cleaned up Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana and I can see he has written glossaries that must have good definitions of words like "Lakshana" - but I do not have anything. Quite often enthusiasts in every sphere like to use jargon, but it makes the article impossible to understand, when terms are used for which there is a perfectly good equivalent in English (or perhaps you are one of those who will insist that Indian music has an entirely different conceptual framework? That is elitism, and that breeds obscurantism. Europeans do this too) Anyhow, I shall find a way, and, whatever it is, somebody will not like it.... Redheylin (talk) 04:53, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Fan sites - I was actually referring to Carnatic musicians, Indian actors and others only (not American and European). In fact, I have not compared any of the articles we have worked on with other genres or other countries' articles, except to look for some good things from them! :) Extreme fan site (or even self-bio???) that I came across - L. Athira Krishna. Tried to talk sense into the many socks and meats. Gave up. If this is not a self-bio, then the artiste would most likely be ashamed of the article (in my opinion).
Categories - as of now, I do not have much time to go through the articles again to give detail comments. That preparation will help others to come to a decision quicker. I have raised this to Wikipedia India project (without the preferred examples / ground work, suggested in previous line), but have not seen any comments...
Regarding oral tradition, I do not wish to take any elitist stand. I am trying to say that if I am not able to come up with closest description or term, which is not supported by some verifiable reliable source, I am not going to start it with my opinionistic definition. So, should I not have used the term - I don't know. Some people say that when we add the term, someone else will fill up the gaps. Some others want to leave out anything that is not clearly defined. In a collaboration the former is better path to take and hope more information is added soon.
And finally, the questions raised and hulla-balloo is only about the action and the events... not the person... :) We don't want to lose any friendship on Wikipedia... but we will disagree where we have to (vehemently too sometimes, but in my case, mostly I just move on after a while leaving the subject alone - but that could be my own nice opinion about myself)! :) VasuVR (talk, contribs) 07:41, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
You express yourself beautifully, who could disagree? I can only say, the more you work on S Indian articles, the better Wiki is going to be. For myself, I respect the culture and want to make sure that it looks good to a non-Tamil-speaker like myself. Also, I think a certain critical mass of wiki subjects has been reached, so that cross-referencing and categorisation is worthwhile. But a lot of pages have been carelessly dumped in main categories like "music", and they need to be sorted. I am not becoming involved in any war until I have done everything that can be done without. Then, when there is a clean, functioning system, I hope all music fans will find a benefit in playing by the rules and there will be little war. Meanwhile I simply write, like I wrote to you, and hope you will understand; it is rather repetitive work, but there is a place for everything. I want to see, for example, that someone who reads about counting systems like bol and hand-conducting can easily find similar systems that exist elsewhere in the world, and understand that music comes from one universal sound and rhythm to which the whole world dances, and gain the knowledge to participate. And so you can easily understand why I have special respect for a system that has built itself around such ideas. I lived in Poona sometime, and one man used to come up and play Rudra Veena, and I would dance, his sound was like the night sky opening in your heart. Onward! Redheylin (talk) 23:56, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
I understand and I would like you to look at this item that started the Indian Music project here at Wikipedia. Indian classical music related categories and categorisation was what kicked it off. This is not to boast about this small step, but that was also one of the sparks that started my work related to Carnatic music in Wikipedia. Of course, I also maintain some more on this (including personal opinions / interpretations of terminology) in my website for more than 13 years, long before Wikipedia was born... And that site has not seen much progress, as I was not bringing anything novel or different for the people (which is not already available on the internet) :) VasuVR (talk, contribs) 06:07, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Vasu, may I contact you again in a little while, when I have cleaned out some of the main categories? I know that I may miss things and make mistakes, because I cannot carry the tree structure of every musical genre in the world, and all of them have anomalies. All that I would ask for the moment is that things are not reverted to the top cats like "music", musical forms and genres, etc. Over in America I have two people - one insisted that rock and roll should be classified directly under "music genres" but someone else insists that reggae should be "music by genre" - so contemporary American popular forms are in two separate places. Nobody has noticed before but now they all want everything to make perfect sense all at once. But I am clearing categories two steps above. After a few days I shall have to visit Americans, Indians and the rest and sort it out one by one, I know so please bear with me. I think it is very important to put Asian classical systems on a par with Western - say by adding to articles like Musical form and Metre (music) and linking historically, to dance and poetry subjects etc. I will be happy to do repetitive edits but today I have to sort out Category:Dance music! I am doubtful about the spellings: Koovagam was spelt as Kuvakkam by various scholars. If you wish to fix the red links and have knowledge about the Tamil Nadu geography, I can send you the map from Hitlebetel's article which shows the location of the temples. --Redtigerxyz Talk 06:35, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

If you have a map that will be helpful. At the same time, after going through many of the other names and trying with many alternate spellings, I started to think that these probably are not yet on Wikipedia. I believe the places may have less population (I have seen the bots load up only places with a population of 5000 or more). At the same time these temples are very well known and the villages or towns are famous because of the temples and the functions.
With respect to spellings, I know that most places will have a different spelling due to Indian view of pronunciations. Example, Tirucci is pronunciation of first part of Tiruchchirappalli (Trichy). VasuVR (talk, contribs) 06:47, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Indian classical music

Hello. I'm going to add articles about Indian music in Spanish Language Wikipedia. Do you know which states of India perform Hindustani classical music and which ones perform Carnatic or both of them? --Opus88888 (talk) 21:24, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Carnatic music describes that it is predominantly embedded in the culture of South India, while Hindustani music is more prevalent in North India. I believe the main pages of both give some information on this. Hope that helps. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:40, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Regarding BIMTECH Bhubaneshwar Redirect

BIMTECH article is about BIMTECH Greater Noida whereas the new article is about BIMTECH Bhubaneshwar. And by the precedent of IIM and IIT's separate articles for the different campuses it fair to have separate articles for Bimtech's different campuses. As I also maintain BIMTECH article, I am hoping to rename it to BIMTECH_Greater_Noida.

Admin help on KES Tennis Championship

{{Adminhelp}}

1. Why is this page not being speedily deleted even after tag for long time? 2. This is giving an impression of an ATP tournament of tennis - it is obviously not. 3. User:Kestc page also has links to Tennis Professionals, like Nadal and Federer. It includes national flags as well giving an impression of legitimacy. Is this allowed?

Can someone take them all out and ensure there is no WP:MADEUP stuff on Wikipedia. Thanks. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 12:29, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello Vasu. I am an administrator and hope to help with your questions. Usually MADEUP stuff falls into neat categories like obvious hoaxes, which are quickly deleted under speedy deletion criteria WP:G3 (blatant vandalism), or poorly-written incoherence which goes under WP:A1 or something. The reason this article may not have been quickly deleted is because it is not obvious to someone unfamiliar with the topic area that it is uncyclopaedic. It looks from the formatting and the use of advanced templates and markup that the author is very familiar with writing Wikipedia articles, and those kinds of editors rarely write things that should be speedily deleted.
You should feel free to remove any suspicious content that is not reliably sourced, like the ATP claims. If you are less sure, you might consider tagging it with {{hoax}} or similar.
Thirdly, having MADEUP stuff on your userpage is generally tolerated, as userpages aren't expected to be taken at face value. However, when combined with attempts by the editor to undermine the encyclopaedia with such untruths, it seems inappropriate. You might as them to clearly indicate that the content is fictional, or to remove it. Failing this, it might be brought to miscellany for deletion (deletion for userpages etc.).
I have deleted the article, and will warn the editor. Hope this helps,  Skomorokh  12:58, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the detail response. Also, I like the approach taken with the user on his talk page. See, basically, I have the same view and did not want to rub anyone the wrong way. We need people to contribute at the same time, I feel there should not be misleading information or disparaging content (latter is no-no in my books, even if it is in a sandbox). Thanks for showing the way of handling things deftly. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 13:27, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
No worries; I have not followed up with the userpage, so I leave that to you (maybe wait until the editor responds to the note). It's probably a long shot and these accounts may never become productive editors, but I started on Wikipedia as a vandal and am now an administrator, so who knows! Regards.  Skomorokh  13:38, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
I noticed that IP user 82.132.139.142 has taken up editing User:Kestc and I left a note at User talk:82.132.139.142. Is it possibly Kestc who is now doing it anonymously? VasuVR (talk, contribs) 13:49, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks.

Thanks, Vasu. I appreciate your inputs and can understand your points. I am new to contributions in this great medium and would like to abide by the policies in place. At the moment, I am a bit confused, but I will read the detailed policies and figure it out as we move along. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Knowledgenirvana (talkcontribs) 19:10, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

I would prefer a better and reliable source before we jump to conclusions. For example M.S. Subbalakshmi bio from Tamil Songs Download and Description along with Vishnu Sahasranamam say it is Tamil. There are bound to be many. Hence we have to find WP:RS before we can assert Kannada. Preferably a biography on her which has been reviewed by many people. New welcome template

Hi VasuVR. Can you tell me what is the name of the new welcome template? I've preferred the orignal {{subst:welcome}} because it is brief and to the point and doesn't fill a new user's talk page in one go like later versions. Your version is a neat compromise. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 16:14, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Replied in your talk page. I just noticed you have been on Wikipedia much longer than me. Hope my reply was OK and I have not misunderstood your question. Can you please tell me which version you say? VasuVR (talk, contribs) 17:29, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, though I can no longer see what it was that pointed me in your direction, nor find it the list of Welcome templates you gave me! I particularly don't like WelcomeG, I feel that it slams a new user. The one I saw was very like the basic Welcome template, except that it had an extra box at the right hand side. I really don't know what happened. I'm afraid that it will remain for ever one of the lost mysteries of Wikipedia! Thank you for your time. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 14:43, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Hmmmm. Then the only way it would have got there is when I used Twinkle for either CSD / PROD / Rollback! :( So, that should lead us to it. I guess a look at my recent User Talk edits, with those Red links to articles (deleted) could give us a clue? Also, in future, you should be able to look at the code immediately and see something like <!-- template xxxx --> - because usually templates include such comments when substituted. Also, could be {{Firstarticle}}? VasuVR (talk, contribs) 15:48, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

59.92.35.171

Admins, Editing from 59.92.35.171 has been disabled by Jpgordon for the following reason(s): Open proxy.

I use BSNL Broadband (Dataone) and I am just one of possibly thousands who get dynamic IP from BSNL. BSNL is the national service provider (majority owned, if not fully) by Government of India. I think this indefinite block should be removed as it is a broadband connection and should not be blocking real users.

I hope someone will explain how a normal broadband connection can be blocked completely.

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 20:20, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Raga Page- Removal of EL for web site "oceanofragas.com"

Dear Mr. Vasu, I had inserted an external link of the abovementioned web site on the Page "Raga" as I felt it will be useful to the viewers. In fact, more than 100 viewers did visit the web site through that link over past few weeks. I noted that the link has been removed during the review process. It is possible that there is a better way of informing the viewers about the web site which is very relevant to the page as the web site has greater than 500 audio files of Ragas illustrating the same and a Raga Base of greater than 1000 Ragas. I shall be thankful if you guide me on the correct method of informing and directing the viewers to the "oceanofragas.com" web site. I may add that there is no advertising or commercial interest in the web site.

Thanking you,

Sudhir Gadre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sudhir V Gadre (talkcontribs) 11:22, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Dear Mr. Gadre,
Here are a few points to keep in mind. (a) The link should be useful reference for the page in question, in this case Raga. (b) It is not that something will be useful for viewers - lot of articles in the web are useful for viewers, like blogs, usenet, etc. It has to be relevant to the page and add further information for that page. (c) The content should be directly available in the link - linking to a home page where there is Zero information on Raga is not useful. (d) Articles on various ragas / audio is available to user only on multiple clicks, selections, searches. This is not the way an Encyclopaedic reference can be included. (e) The purpose seems to be then, to drive traffic, rather than "improve the page Raga". For that purpose you should contact search engines, like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. As you have rightly guessed, those are the right ways for viewers to know about this website. (f) There are hundreds of sites that are having similar content to the link in question. The website has not achieved notability on its own (to my knowledge) in reliable 3rd party reviews/ critques, in order to qualify above the hundreds of other sites. (g) Finally, if this is a website that you maintain or own, there is Conflict of Interest (see WP:EL).
Hence, the removal. And as mentioned in item (e) above, go to search engines and use other methodologies to inform users about this website.
Hope these answer your queries and help you towards better contribution to Wikipedia.

VasuVR (talk, contribs) 12:22, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Dear Mr. Vasu, Thanks for a detailed explanation outlining the methodology of operation of the Wikipedia. I shall keep these points in mind when contributing matter to Wikipedia. I shall be thankful if you kindly let me know if there is a practice of conducting third party review of web sites on behalf of Wikipedia.

Thanks once again and we shall keep in touch.

Sudhir Gadre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sudhir V Gadre (talkcontribs) 05:28, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

To my knowledge there is no initiative in Wikipedia to do reviews of anything. We are talking about "scholarly reviews", "reviews by members of universities and colleges" or by people of repute, which are "published". Alternately we are talking of other publishings that are considered Verifiable and from Reliable sources. These can then be "referenced" in the Wikipedia articles. For example, if a "review" is published in Scientific American about, say, Safety measures worked well in Japan's nuclear plant, then it can be referenced and included as valid point in a Wikipedia article, but if I have a blog says same thing (or opposite view), it is not considered a reliable source.
I may be wrong - but try to contact various help methods available in Wikipedia - starting at Questions page OR from the many links at the top of this talk page itself.
PS: Please note that you can sign your talk messages easily, with timestamp, by just typing ~~~~ at end of your message (four continuous tilde characters). As you can see above, a robot program has come after you to include your signature - please try to avoid this.

Removal of version 428058887

I went through "Wikipedia:External links" article and I don't see a reason why this link should be removed. Shall I get it back again? Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iammusicfreak (talkcontribs) 16:35, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Please refer to the following points within WP:EL.
A. Under Links to be avoided - item 1 - the Android application would not meet criteria of providing any unique information not available elsewhere.
B. Points 7 & 8 - users cannot see anything directly. They have to download your application. The link is not directly related to Raga page.
C. See also section "Rich Media".
Hence, the link is not acceptable to the article Raga.
VasuVR (talk, contribs) 10:18, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

I agree with point B & C and hence refrain from adding this external link. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iammusicfreak (talkcontribs) 06:16, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Old Daubmir page

A tag has been placed on Old Daubmir page, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this:   which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the article's talk page directly to give your reasons. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. DASHBot (talk) 18:00, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Speedy delete is correct action. I had moved the page to User:Daubmir's sub-page space. I should have nominated the speedy delete myself! :) VasuVR (talk, contribs) 03:44, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

When an user is banned...

their edits are reverted. When the conduct and disputes are the same as those that led to the topic ban (followed by a site ban), then this becomes a means of enforcement. And I don't agree that can be called an "unproductive edit war"; rather than letting the few useful contributors being exhausted to the point of no return and thereby having the project policies being compromised, the Community prefers its measures being enforced in whatever way possible. Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:03, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

I understand your point. At the same time this is so much of unproductive edits. A formerly FA is no longer FA and will never be an FA unless the two warring parties keep off and some other authors take up... I wonder if this is possible... VasuVR (talk, contribs) 02:22, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedia Stories Project

Hello,

My name is Victor Grigas, and I'm a storyteller at the Wikimedia foundation. We're telling stories of Wikipedia users, editors, donors, programmers and staff to paint a picture of who uses Wikipedia - for the 2011 fundraiser.

I am in the process of planning a trip to India to gather stories from Indian Wikipedians in face-to-face interviews (possibly on video).

My primary goal is to conduct 15-20 interviews, and hopefully enough of my interviews will make compelling stories that will effectively solicit donations from the public. These stories may also be used for other communication purposes by the foundation.

I found your userpage on a list of prolific Wikipedians and thought I’d reach out to you. Prolific editing is always a good story to tell!

If you are interested in participating, please contact me via my email:

vgrigas@wikimedia.org

Thank you for your time!

Victor

About me: I have been a Wikipedia editor since 2005, and have a background in film, video and audio. My userpage can be found here: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Victorgrigas

Thank you for your interest in getting the story behind the work that goes on. I would like to know a little bit more about what you are looking for. About myself - I have primarily contributed to only one miniscule area - South Indian Classical music (Carnatic music) and very few edits in other areas that come to my attention. Sometimes I patrol latest additions (new pages).
With this information, would you think a story is possible in my case. If so, can you give some points you would like to discuss, so that I can decide on whether it would be useful enough to make a story. Thanks. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:24, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Emani Sankara Sastry

Hello Vasu! I would consider the page being kept as Sankara Sastri Emani or even Sankara Emani if possible. Wikipedia is meant to provide knowledge to the world! Not just India! I am an Emani too and most of us would set up our screen names on Facebook or also in several official areas as "First Name" Emani. The man was only traditionally reffed to as Emani Sankara Sastri. But since Wikipedia follows international standards, Sankara Sastri Emani or Sankara Emani would be correct! --Anirudh Emani (talk) 15:17, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

The IMDB lists it as Sankara Sastri Eemani. They have misspelled the last name, but they definitely show that E. Sankara Sastri was only an alternate name and not the official. IMDB is more reliable than that of Answers.com and hence the move is justified.--Anirudh Emani (talk) 15:56, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
The soundtrack for the movie Bahut Din Huwe... was composed by him. IMDB is currently, the only website that can be relied on. Google shows IMDB at the top. IMDB again listed him as Sankara Ssatri Emani and not the other way around. --Anirudh Emani (talk) 16:21, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
There is no primary source available.. IMDB is the only best source we have right now and i think we shout stick to it! We cant have self published content of a 20th century guy on the internet!! Definitely not!! --Anirudh Emani (talk) 04:51, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
My only valid reason for changing it to Sankara Sastry Emani is to match international standards. But then since you have a lot of other reasons to leave it as Emani Sankara Sastry, i guess we have no other choice. Lets end this discussion in a smile. Thank you and goodbye! --Anirudh Emani (talk) 13:32, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Please mark importance on the main project and subproject as well, like tamilnadu-importane= or education-importance=. Once again, thanks for the participation. Ssriram mt (talk) 00:17, 6 March 2012 (UTC)ssriram_mt

The first iteration is a quicker one using AWB, where I have jumped in and assessed the stub articles whenever they are including any stub template. When it comes to the importance of any subject, it is quite subjective and needs time to review as well. Only people with prior knowledge of the area of interest would know the importance as well. Will continue the work over coming days. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 02:49, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Sure. Including articles already not part of India project is greatly appreciated as well - so keep going. Thanks again. Ssriram mt (talk) 03:59, 6 March 2012 (UTC)ssriram_mt
Vasu, Firstly thank you for your prodigious edits. It is very heartening to see editors come forth and participate whole-heartedly. I see that Sriram has already given you a barnstar, so I'll just give you a drink! :)
I'm sure you will prefer some feedback (=breakfast for champions) for you to improve your assessment!
Extended content
* Let me take an example, only for telling you what I am talking about. Some of the articles you classified as stubs are more correctly qualified as start or may just about qualify for even C. Please see this rule of thumb, I have developed for judging quality. Please re-evaluate your editing otherwise, we will have to go over all the 40K stub articles once again, which you agree is a pain. Example - Manohar Malgonkar, it is obviously a start class, and it is obvious that he is from Maharashtra (maharashtra=yes) & that he is an author (literature=yes) and he lacks an image. Also, as a courtesy, we should also fill in elementary parameters for WikiProject Biography.
  • Here is another. Talk:Ministry_of_External_Affairs_(India) - the importance was lowered from high to mid. The MEA is one of the core ministries to the GOI and hence of the functioning of the nation. It is of top-importance or acceptable as high but not mid. The article is multi-para, referenced, categorised, has infobox, has link box template & an image. There is no way it can be stub which you allowed to remain. In this case, your assessment was not an improvement of the situation but otherwise.
  • My aim is only to open your mind for improving your assessment.
  • My sincere request is to please spend much more time on thinking about assessments than doing any number of them. Speed does not matter to us - the campaign is for three months but quality and comprehensiveness DOES matter. We need to be accurate and as detailed as possible.
  • Please understand, by using AWB, you become our major contributor & therefore very important. I would love it if you could add more parameters and wisely rather than speed through it. The problem is AWB. The speed can be mesmerizing but we would like you to use the time saved by doing high value assessment rather than more edits. I would prefer you do just twenty high value assessments per day then do hundreds of assessments which will prove to be a liability over time.
Sorry to be frank. Hope you take my improvement points in the spirit they are meant rather than as criticism which it is not meant to be. AshLin (talk) 04:50, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
You don't have to be sorry. Thank you for the frank feedback. I have thought along those lines too. My approach though has been different. I also see lot of difference between the templates included in the article and the assessments (stub template included, but article already assessed as start / c / B class). I plan to return to focus on some specific area, which I am familiar with, and then contribute in that area with the detail assessment points that you have elucidated. The initial approach that I have undertaken also gives me a list of articles that I will return to, from the list of my own user contributions. It is a matter of slicing and dicing in different ways. Hope you understand. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 05:19, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for being understanding. I'm sure the problem will now no longer be manifest. Do edit wherever you like. Happy editing! :) AshLin (talk) 07:53, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

One suggestion while marking the importance of a page. The importance level for a project taskforce may be one level greater than the project itself. For example: Mangalore is high-importance for wikiproject India but top importance for wikiproject mangalore. The case in question where I noticed this flaw was the state-level higher educational institutions lists (see them listed at Template:Education in India). These are clearly atleast mid-importance for wikiproject india and high-importance for wikiproject education in india.

I hope this will help you in future bot assessments. Regards--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 21:48, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

PS:You might want to look into what caused this edit.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 21:56, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

I understand these scenarios. Occasionally there would be a disagreement on importance assignment, that can be changed by any other editor. I have no issues with that. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 10:19, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

You deserve a barnstar, and you just got one!

  The India Star
On 3 March 2012, the WikiProject had 94,374 articles. On 08 March 2012 it had 95,942. There is no doubt that this increase of 1568 articles is principally due to your recent editing. For your services to WikiProject India, you are awarded the India Star! AshLin (talk) 16:45, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

You deserve it

  The Working Wikipedian's Barnstar

Absolutely... a cup of coffee for now. At the end, we will celebrate with champagne and beer!--Dwaipayan (talk) 01:46, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Vandalism on Doon School alumni page

Your recent quality change on the Talk:Doon School alumni page is considered Vandalism. As the ratings were earlier given by CTCooper who is a Schools Project Admin. Kindly refrain from such counter-productive activities. Thank you! [[User:Merlaysamuel|Merlaysamuel]] (talk) 08:33, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Learn editing, check your facts, check credentials, before coming up with some lame accusations. Thanks. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 09:30, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Please read my reply to your post on my talk page. You changed the ratings at your own whim which, I repeat, were given by CTCooper, an admin. You, in a sense, carelessly changed the ratings given by a responsible school admin (who is well aware of how to rate the school pages). What explanation do you have for it? You did not even discuss it with anyone! Good luck!

Merlaysamuel (talk) 09:38, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Does not warrant... oh, never mind... --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 09:40, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Care to explain what 'does not warrant....oh never mind' means? Merlaysamuel (talk) 09:44, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
