Administrators' newsletter – August 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).
- After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
- Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.
- The WMF Anti-Harassment Tools team is seeking input on the second set of wireframes for the Special:Block redesign that will introduce partial blocks. The new functionality will allow you to block a user from editing a specific set of pages, pages in a category, a namespace, and for specific actions such as moving pages and uploading files.

Hi Theinstantmatrix-
For some reason you removed the photo of Marvin Newman. I am the developer of his website. Marvin assures me that he has full rights to that picture.
Thanks, David Weltz
Davidweltz (talk) 22:13, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- You're a month too late. That image is already deleted to protect the project from using media content that may not be legally used, so there's absolutely no reason for you to use the undo feature to "restore" the image as you attempted to do so here. As I (and others) told you already, the only way you're going to get the image restored is have the photographer of the image go through OTRS that declares that his/her image be released under a free license. Do not participate in disruptive editing every month and instead ask the person who took the photo of your subject to release the image under the free license via OTRS. Just for the record, here's the copyright-violating image that you've tried to upload to Commons for use on Wikipedia. theinstantmatrix (talk) 03:02, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, re Burgh Island addition - personally think it is interesting and important it's been sold and is being redeveloped. It's also factually correct.

While I'm on what's the best format for adding references in the numbered section? Thanks for your help! Driving1972 (talk) 12:44, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
- I added it back, under a different wording. Sorry about that. You can see Help:Referencing for beginners for your future contributions. Thanks, theinstantmatrix (talk) 13:09, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

My earlier edits to Red Ash: The indelible Legend are simply character descriptions as any other page for a video game or anime or movie will often have, only they are the official descriptions and openly provided on the game's Kickstarter page. There is actually nothing even remotely copyright infringing about it. The website that you linked to took those descriptions from the official Kickstarter page. They did not create them. Plus, no one on the internet has the official list of the voice actors for the characters, which I retrieved from the official credits.
Reference: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightyno9/red-ash-the-indelible-legend
This page is incredibly blank, and does not give n acceptable representation of what is actually available from this game. If you visit pages like Mega Man Legends or Pokémon (Anime), it has character sections precisely like the one I created for this page. I do believe it is appropriate for this page, just as it would be for any other page. Thank you. :-)
2601:4A:C001:4580:C0FE:DACD:3AA8:5626 (talk) 00:59, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
- So? It's still against policy to copy those character descriptions and paste it onto here. It did say on WP:VGSCOPE that lists of video game characters are inappropriate to add unless there's secondary sourcing, and that there is evidence it's notable enough to include it. In the case of The Indelible Legend, it's still an upcoming game, and it's highly unlikely a VG characters list would survive if one would add it into the page. Plus, just because you think it's "openly provided" does not mean you get to copy it and paste it as your own. Works are copyrighted by default, even when there's no copyright notice. theinstantmatrix (talk) 02:21, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
Wow, sore much, because you made a mistake, lol?
I'll write my own descriptions then. Again, every other page in the world has character descriptions, and if your too stubborn to include actually useful information the n, I'm sorry, you're failing to do the job Wikipedia is trying to do by providing appropriate information. You, sir, need to actually learn copyright, and maybe look up a few more pages that source things precisely as I did, because they're out there. but, you can do that work yourself. Bye-bye, Amigo.

- Legacy JavaScript global variables have been deprecated for seven years. They will soon be removed from all wikis. Gadgets and scripts that use them will stop working. You can test your community's gadgets on "group0" wikis. For example Test Wikipedia or mediawiki.org. The legacy JavaScript global variables are already disabled there. You can read the migration guide to fix old scripts. [6]

Hello,
I was just curious how to have my edit put back. I saw it was removed as it wasn't cited. I attended the wedding and wasn't sure how to put myself as a source.

- Sorry, but Wikipedia doesn't accept original research (including your own personal experiences), nor we do not allow any unsourced/questionable statements about a living person. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for your own future contributions. theinstantmatrix (talk) 22:53, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
