DYK for Sue Bailey Thurman
On 14 September 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sue Bailey Thurman, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1958 Sue Bailey Thurman used a cookbook to publish a "palatable history" of professional black women? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sue Bailey Thurman. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
Help with the "move"
Hi SusunW! I just lead a seminar yesterday with a digital humanities graduate class on how to use Wikipedia. An issue we ran into toward the end of the class was some of the students not having the "move" ability at the top of their page. Typically pages will have "read," "edit," "View History," and then "More," where the move option can be found. The majority of the class did not have this option and I could not find a way to fix this for them. My first thought was that it might have something to do with the computer they were on (Mac vs a PC, since I have always worked on a PC at the library). Yet today I tried the same process on my Mac laptop but was able to access the "Move" page. Do you have any insight into how I can instruct the class to fix this? Thank you for all of your help! Amcdougal (talk) 17:26, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
- Amcdougal You will have access to the "move" function because you are an established user. New users do not usually have that ability. Wikipedia:Moving a page. To have the ability to move a page, you have to have performed a certain number of edits or in some cases had an account for a specific period of time. (Usually 4 days since account creation with a minimum of 10 edits.) Wikipedia:User access levels#Autoconfirmed and confirmed users The only way I know to solve the issue would be to have them create the account prior to the seminar to meet the four day hold. Perhaps @Montanabw and Rosiestep: might have another solution. SusunW (talk) 17:41, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
- Yep, I just had to address this at the recent editathon I did; my co-facilitator and I knew that if new articles were created that day, we'd have to move some articles for people. We had about half the people there already with accounts, but there were a couple total newbies that we just pointed to existing articles. Montanabw(talk) 18:08, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, sugar. I thought that was the answer, but wanted to make sure. SusunW (talk) 18:19, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Re: West Las Vegas
Checked on the information from here last night. Many of the photos are from UNLV Special Collections, so I looked through what they have online. Was hoping to find some type of photo that took in a good section of the West Side; Found aerial shots but none of them really let you identify anything. A lot of the photos in the PDF are online at UNLV--the problem would be that we would have to use them as non-free. The PDF dates from 1989 by some copy I read in it, so that won't work for PD either. Tried looking at postcards in various places because that might have been where a PD image could be found. Predictably, the postcards are all from the Strip area. You may not get the links to cooperate right now--the UNLV site seems to be having issues. We hope (talk) 16:33, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
- We hope I'm wondering about the chips. I remember that e-bay was the only source we could find on Sue Bailey Thurman's books. Yes, I'd rather have club photos, but that may not be possible. Most of the actual clubs no longer exist and as you say, the strip ones are going to the the more prominent. SusunW (talk) 16:42, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
- Take a look at File:Treasure Island Hotel and Casino chip.jpg and also at the Commons deletion request for what was once a larger photo of other chips. Older chips which aren't elaborate would be fine if some could be tracked down at eBay, etc. The problem with using these from the article is that this article-photos and all--was published circa 1989. There are close to 9,000 listings for chips at eBay--starting to look now. We hope (talk) 16:59, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
I found another online archive for the magazine with better scans. this is an external link at the Baha'i News WP page. Their scans are so much clearer. Regarding this, the PROD was applied by 117.215.192.105 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), who's been trolling a bunch of articles I wrote. Women in architecture red-links list
Hi Susun. As you were so helpful in expanding our list of red-linked women in leadership, I was wondering whether you would like to contribute to the Wikipedia:Wikipedia/WikiProject Women/Women in Red/Women in architecture list which I have posted on the Wikipedia:Meetup/Women in Red/3 page. With your interest and qualifications in women's history, you will no doubt be keen to add the names of historical figures. I have tended to add the names of living or recent contributors to the field. There's no rush with this.--Ipigott (talk) 14:14, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
- I shall try, Ian. Don't know much about architects, but the Romanian ones we did earlier last year were fascinating. SusunW (talk) 14:24, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
- You have a better memory than I do, Susun, but those who were the first to be accepted in colleges, universities, and professional associations in the various countries, as well as those who were the first to set up their own studios, probably deserve coverage. But please don't feel under any obligation.--Ipigott (talk) 20:56, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words. I do assure you that I'm not purposely trying to be difficult or tendentious — it's just that with the election campaign actively underway, we end up having to be especially hypervigilant and gimlet-eyed when it comes to new articles about candidates in that election. I'm not singling her out, as I've also listed several other articles about candidates for all three major Canadian political parties at around the same time — and frankly, if I lived in North Bay she is the candidate I'd probably be voting for next month. Thanks again. Bearcat (talk) 18:30, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
- Bearcat honestly, I do get it. But I also see the big picture. For a lot of women, minorities and LGBT people as well, multiple mention is all that exists. Especially with historic figures, which I mostly write about, rarely are they the subject of an article and chaining pieces together for depth is the only way to add sufficient weight. I think for many, the guidelines are very unclear. I try to look at all the pages that come up on our project "alert" and it is exhausting to deal with. Someone told me yesterday that a substantive source must have 200-pages. I was incredulous. What news article, magazine article, (even juried) would be 200 pages? If is is 200 pages of fluff, how does that have any depth than a single line which gives importance? It is refreshing, to have someone "get it", even if we don't necessarily agree. ;) SusunW (talk) 18:48, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
- Whoever told you a "substantive" source has to have 200 pages sounds dubious to me - always make them cite a guideline or policy for such claims. Common Sense was well under 200 pages...! Montanabw(talk) 05:14, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Can you find anything more on her? Weak notability compared to the other notable politicians listed in the 10. Did Rosiestep add the Basque women list? It's taking a long time to complete! The remaining four are political bios which you're good at!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:10, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld I didn't do her to begin with because I couldn't find any sourcing. I think up to now, I have done all of the Basque women that have been done except one. I don't know who proposed them. I'll look at what is left, but I'm working on a fascinating architect, that has taken several days and probably needs several more. SusunW (talk) 15:29, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld I took Katy Gutiérrez Muñoz and she is a prime example of why I am needing to take a break from translating Spanish articles. The only source cited says nothing about what is in the article. It is so much easier to do an article completely from scratch than to try to translate it from Spanish wiki and for me a whole lot less frustrating. Maybe you can find additional sourcing, I find very little. I get a lot of hits on a name-same in Peru even if I input Spain as a criteria. Maybe on your side of the pond searches will actually end up about Spain? SusunW (talk) 16:42, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think you do need a break from Spanish world articles. You've done a tremendous amount in recent months. Next month, would you be up for some old Vegas landmarks or something and plain English research? Or American women architects? Martina Ibaibarriaga is quite an interesting one!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:45, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
- Yes. I enjoyed the West Vegas stuff. And am really, really enjoying this architect I am working on. Dusting her buildings out of the bowels of history is amazing. To have her actually admit that she disguised her gender was even more fascinating. ;) SusunW (talk) 16:51, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

- Do you have a copy of Patrick Lester's *The Biographical Directory of Native American Painters*? It's dated (published 1995), but it's treasure trove! Anyway, for Edmond, Lester says, Creek-Seminole, born April 2, 1936, son of Dorothy Tiger and Edmond Joshua. First cousin was Jerome Tiger. His brother Lee Roy Joshua was also an artist. From Okmulgee, Oklahoma, sculptor and painter, worked in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, pen and ink, and stone. His work is in the collection of the Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School, Pine Ridge, SD (Lester 275). Looks like he passed on in 2005. Yuchitown (talk) 05:11, 30 September 2015 (UTC)Yuchitown
- We don't have bios on either he or Lee. Lee is written up here[2]. And no, I don't have that reference. I grew up in Muskogee. SusunW (talk) 05:59, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- I don't think Edmond or Lee Roy would qualify as notable by Wikipedia standards. Maybe they could be mentioned in a "family" section of Jerome Tiger's page? - Yuchitown Yes, amazing book! I love resources. And I agree, they probably neither one meet individual GNG, certainly not the higher bar artist. I did putter a bit in Newspapers.com to see if there were any awards I could find and didn't find anything. Will add them with a redirect, in case anyone is looking. I am always amazed when really significant people don't have an article. SusunW (talk) 14:16, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

- There really should be an article for The Broken Column - it's such a famous Kahlo image and one of her most iconic self portraits. Was surprised there wasn't one already. Mabalu (talk) 16:10, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
- Mabalu I agree, but the question to my mind is can an image be obtained? Because without the painting as a visual, something major would be lost. SusunW (talk) 16:14, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, a small-sized JPG of the picture can be uploaded as a local file on here, with fair-use rationales for inclusion in the article on the painting and for inclusion in Frida Kahlo. If so, a fair-use rationale could also probably be used to justify its inclusion in the Metal corset article. The Broken Column can then be added to Template:Frida Kahlo. Always happy to be of help. I've taken a look at your article and tweaked some categories. I added a couple and removed the one for Oread Institute alumni - I looked at the article for the institute and frankly think there aren't likely to be enough alumni with articles to make creating a category worthwhile. (Though this can, of course, always be changed.)
For the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame: there is no category, but there is a footer template. I did a little nosing around, and I don't think there are categories for members of any of the women's halls of fame in the US. Now, one can certainly be created, but I suspect the argument will be, generally, that the footer does a better job of organizing articles than a category would. What say you? I'll add the footer to the article now.
Keep up the good work, and happy editing! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:52, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
- Ser Amantio di Nicolao Gracias, mi amigo. The only one I have had any great dealings with is Oklahoma and there is definitely a category..."Category:Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame" but a template works fine for me. As long as there is some way to group them, I think we are good. :) Really do appreciate all of your behind the scenes help, I am terrible at the technical stuff. SusunW (talk) 17:13, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
- Always a pleasure - I always enjoy your articles, also. Very well-constructed and well-researched. :-)
- I'll look into the Oklahoma category, because I think it can be integrated into the category tree at large a bit better. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:15, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

- Ser Amantio di Nicolao I was just doing an assist on adding categories and WikiProjects to an editathon creation Janet Kalven for the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame and noted they had a template like Alabama, so I added it. I think you are probably correct that the template is more useful, though there will be those that hate all the red links. Should the Oklahoma categories be converted to a template and how would one do that? SusunW (talk) 14:59, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
- It's up to you - personally, I don't think it matters much one way or the other, as long as the articles are grouped together. If you wanted to make a template, what I would do is choose one of the other templates and use it as a map to create the one you want. That's what I usually do on the rare occasions I create templates. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa.

Philadelphia City directories
Hi! I don't think we have access, but I'm going to ask the records specialists and our archivist when they get into work. Our special collections focuses on Border Heritage: Mexico, New Mexico, Texas, Chicana/o etc. But we do have some genealogy resources. So keep your fingers crossed! :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 15:51, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia article with Authority control + VIAF, but no Wikidata property
Maybe I should apply for an IEG grant and hire a college student to create Wikidata items for WiR articles. Half kidding. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:52, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'm totally in favor of that and I'm not half kidding ;) SusunW (talk) 03:19, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Rosiestep: You could probably put a project application together covering not only Wikidata coding but also more efficient methods of monitoring new additions to Women in Red and to all the other participating WikiProjects. It seems to me that the problems of sorting, listing and transfer are in fact all pretty simple in programming terms. Automatic category creation or prompting could also be included. I always had the impression that there were literally hundreds of programming wizzkids on Wikipedia and Wikimedia but when you really need them to help out on something specific they somehow fade out of the radar.--Ipigott (talk) 15:03, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

400 new articles
Susun, I am absolutely amazed at the huge number of interesting new articles you've created over the past ten months. I simply don't know how you manage to carry out all that research and package it up in Wikipedia code so quickly. The reason I was looking at the articles you have been creating is that I've included the last few on women architects under "Outcomes" on Wikipedia:Meetup/Women_in_Red/3. I think they deserve to be there as they were on the list we have been preparing together. And you seem to be the only one who has started to contribute seriously. Keep up the good work!--Ipigott (talk) 14:53, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you Ian. Your input means a lot. I have always said research is my forte. I enjoy it. Technical stuff, not and when I must get bogged down with programming type stuff, I cannot create articles. I didn't include them because the notice says during the editathon, but obviously I created them because of our work preparing the list. The first, doesn't even appear on the list because I got so interested in doing her I thought if I put her on the list someone else might do her. I have no ownership issues at all, it was totally about the puzzle of identifying and putting her buildings together. E. E. Holman hopefully will appear on DYK in the next week or so. I would love for the photos to be fixed before it appears on the front page but I don't know how to do that and apparently WeHope has gone. Maybe you or Belle either have the skill or know someone who has the skill to make the clubhouse photos all the same size and cleaner? SusunW (talk) 15:04, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- I've reformatted the images but I'm not sure that's what you want. Maybe they would look better a bit bigger over two lines, four on each line? I'll delete the old ones. They can always be restored.--Ipigott (talk) 15:46, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- I can clean some of them up too if you like but only tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 15:53, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Ian I have no idea how you did that as I could never get the castle to be the same size as the others. Thank you! Clearly they could go on two lines. I'd also like them to have the black borders making them look more like old-timey slides removed so they are just pictures, but again, don't know how to do that since the images were already on Wikipedia. But, they look much better than they did previously, IMO. SusunW (talk) 15:54, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'll do all that when I have time. Latest tomorrow. And here's a little tip. When I find something that works in someone else's article, I remember it or store it for future reference. Most of what I do on Wikipedia is simply copy and paste. When I joined, there were none of those facilities you have been using for drafting articles, etc. We just had to survive somehow. But I must say, I don't see why I should now go through the same pain with Wikidata. Wikipedia should be self-contained. But I must say I learnt quite a bit from our dear friend Dr. Blofeld, especially with gadgets for referencing and for his expertise with combining images. If ever you are really stuck, he's one of the best for assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 17:15, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Are they OK now? I can also remove the other dark borders if you wish but I think they are fine as they are. I'm not going to bother with the images in the gallery at the bottom of the article.--Ipigott (talk) 18:38, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Much better. Ipigott I think the gallery ones are fine. THANK YOU! SusunW (talk) 18:52, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

Carol Goodden
Hi! I'm glad you hopped in on my talk page. Yesterday I was super tired and all the fight was out of me. I really felt like it would be better to merge than to fight... also I didn't feel very confident about my article since she was difficult to source and I had to use some "iffy" (alternative artsy) sources. Honestly, it felt like I was going to get into a battle that would be tough to support and I thought if I merged, I could preserve the fact that she was the driving force behind FOOD... that said, it sounds like maybe I should "woman up" and think twice about merging... What's your take?
I've been so tired because I'm setting up a Makerspace for my library and I'm the only one who can configure the 3d printers, Macs, audio equipment and all of the tech (which I'm only an amateur at) is frying my brain. Driving home, I was seeing double! Anyway, thanks for your support, Susun! :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 14:39, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Give me a bit of time to finish the article I'm working on and I'll work some on Goodden. Don't let them bully you. I wouldn't merge her, I'd fight for her. ;) SusunW (talk) 14:46, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Harriet Moody
Hello! Your submission of Harriet Moody at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Mackensen (talk) 13:59, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Conferences of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance
I thought it was fitting to create First Conference of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance while in the capitol, and Second Conference of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, Third Conference of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, and Fourth Conference of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance were easy enough to follow suit before I got too tired to do more. If you have access to the PD reference, you'll see there are a lot of international names associated with these conferences, and I assume at least some would meet WP:N. Who were these women and what brought them to these conferences? Women's suffrage is the short answer but I wonder what was the inspiration in their lives. We'll probably never know. I'll work on the ensuing conferences in the next couple of days. I don't really know that there's much more to do with these articles... mostly I just stopped by to let you know about them. --Rosiestep (talk) 11:39, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
- Of course I cannot access the source, but possibly will be able to find it in Hathitrust or somewhere?? I'll look. Been working on the metrics, as I am sure you noticed. A whole lot of sports one liners, but I was able to save 2 prods on notable women. One was the first female head in 128 years of Florida A&M...cannot remember either's name, have looked at too many names in the last 2 days. Working on my architect of the day, first one from Belize. But...I'll look at the conferences. I find them fascinating. SusunW (talk) 01:25, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- I've created 7 of them and have access to a few more, so I'll continue with a first pass on them and will circle back and add more later. Hoping I can find some pictures somewhere. And I'll add names, too, as I haven't added all that I could. I keep asking myself: who were these women who put these conferences together? We know a bit about Susan B. Anthony and Carrie Chapman Catt, but it's the lesser known figures who really interest me. And how they organized their conferences every two years. And who recorded all the things they were doing so they could create a record of their conference/congress? I read that they had university students as "pages". Lots we can learn from them. --Rosiestep (talk) 11:48, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Main picture hook for "EE Holman"
I have boldly changed the DYK image to a larger colour one (the dormitory pic) - revert if you disagree, but I think it is more eye catching Victuallers (talk) 11:57, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- Victuallers If that is done the hook needs to be changed, as it specifically refers to the Odeon theater. Funny, I prefer black and white photos, but if you want to change it to a color one, there is a color picture of the pagoda (not currently in the article) which is lovely. SusunW (talk) 13:36, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- Its not (just?) the colour its the aspect ratio. The current main page favours portrait type pictures and makes those bigger. n.b.I did change the hook Do feel free to revert my bold edit. Victuallers (talk) 14:03, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- Victuallers I wouldn't even know how to revert it, don't remotely understand "aspect ratio" or the like, and frankly don't care. *Which* of her works is highlighted makes no difference ;) as they were all pretty amazing and I am just glad there is now an article about her. SusunW (talk) 14:11, 12 October 2015 (UTC) - Me too! Thx (If you hold an A4 piece of paper one way its "portrait" if you turn it 90 degrees its called "landscape". DYK for Emily Elizabeth Holman
On 13 October 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Emily Elizabeth Holman, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that E. E. Holman's gender was deliberately disguised to secure architectural contracts, like those for the National Park Seminary's Aloha Dormitory (pictured)? Susun, thank you for all your work on WP:Women in Red's metrics. So important, so time consuming, so noticeable, so appreciated! Rosiestep (talk) 11:34, 12 October 2015 (UTC) |
- Thank you Rosiestep! I suspect it is noticeable only to me and you, but I hope against hope it will eventually lead to some real ability to analyze where we are with articles on women. From what I see, millions of sports articles with 1 line and very little else. But, I'll take the one liners on sports if it ultimately improves the coverage of women and shows what we can achieve.
- Did you add your conferences to the Metrics? I am concerned that those files which just utilize Wikiproject Women banner are not being included in our data, but maybe they are? SusunW (talk) 13:43, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reminder; just added them. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:57, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- Rosiestep I saw that. Am just about to finish the scientists and will be finished with the first move to the metrics!!!! There has to be an easier way and why can we not just get one list? There are some duplicates, but each of the smaller sections, artist, writer, scientist, has unique pages. How can this not be possible to automate? It is insane that we cannot even get just one list. SusunW (talk) 20:04, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- On the event's last afternoon, I met a WMF person who said she can help with metrics using project management software. There was no time to discuss it further, as we were being pulled away in different directions, but she gave me her card and said to contact her. I will sort through my backpack tomorrow to find it and after I connect with her, we'll see what she can do. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:46, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
