Indian Americans, Linguistic Affiliation

The page is about Indian Americans while the number of speakers of certain indian languages(especially tamil & punjabi), in the source includes non-indians(other Sth.Asians) too which is irrelevant here. Talk Page discussion & consensus needed before adding such large sections - This was my edit summary for the removal. It has nothing to do with caste. AP and TL locator maps

Hello there,

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. The inclusion of the undivided Andhra districts was an intended temporary measure, as some cities in Telangana still were using the Andhra Pradesh locator map. Now that the issue has been sorted out (at least on the English Wikipedia), we can remove the other districts. As this is a Raster image, it's very simple.

As a beginner, I would recommend that you use Paint to edit the file. Open the file in Paint, and use the ink dropper to pick the exact grey colour that you want to replace the district lines with. Then, take the brush and draw over the lines. You can then replace the file with the one you have created.

When you get more competent with image editing, I would recommend you try more advanced software such as Paint.NET, and then the GIMP for raster images, and Inkscape for vector images.

Thank you for keeping in touch with me. I'm sorry I haven't come up with a solid plan for almost a month now, so I'll just give you the state of things and figure out while we discuss it what's the best plan forward.

Ideally we want a "simple" auto transliteration from Latin (L) to Javanese script (JS) in Javanese Wikipedia (JV-WP) and other projects (there's one Javanese-Banyumasan Wikipedia, and Javanese Wiktionary, and several Javanese projects in incubator). Right now, all we have in WMF projects are Javanese texts in L, and javascript to write in Javanese script (it's a pun!) from Wikimedia's UniversalLanguageSelector (ULS) kit. Now, how to go from there to something like Kazakh Wikipedia (KK-WP) and/or Chinese Wikipedia (ZH-WP), where user have the option (a tab) to go from one writing system to another (in Chinese Wikipedia it's actually the same writing system [1], and the technical implementation is different, but the idea is still the same).

I have tried to find the actual code that enable KK-WP to be transliterated automatically in 3 writing system, and use that as a reference to make the JV-WP one, but that's where I stuck. The script is located in languages\classes\LanguageKk.php, and all I managed to do till now is only making a typing transliterator (jv:Panganggo:Bennylin/trans.js). I'm not really fluent in Javascript, so I based that on a Hindi transliterator that I've found elsewhere (with permission). I also make a different transliterator for ULS (jv:Panganggo:Bennylin/Narayam, based on Sanskrit's ULS, also available as Firefox Add-on) and Google's IME (jv:Panganggo:Bennylin/Nulisa, pending publishing). Other than that there's somewhat inferior two-way transliteration script jv:Panganggo:Bennylin/transliterator.js which I used mainly for the JS to L backtranslit, and a templating system in Javanese Wiktionary. All of these transliteration scripts have their share of weaknesses, and different application. The one that I used the most is the one in my github project, because it enable a two way transliteration, and also able to translate the whole article. In JV-WP, one could also turn on a gadget to enable them type in JS jv:Astamiwa:Preferensi#mw-prefsection-gadgets (Nulisa), although right now it's broken because of the changes in MW's codebase, and I haven't fix it yet.

So, if you need somewhere to start, I suggest 1) deciphering the LanguageKk.php, 2) understanding my scripts (questions are welcomed), hopefully my different scripts that I worked on these past years would give a better picture of the complex mapping between the two writing system, and then 3) possibly create LanguageJv.php. Either that, or we could find a way to query the transliterator in github back to Wikipedia.

Several example of manually created JS articles in JV-WP:

• jv:Dhiskusi:Joko_Widodo

They're still somewhat full of mistakes (I actually use it to count the typing speed of the ULS script), but I hope they're useful to visualize the end result.

As of today, the ULS is unfortunately turned off by default in JV-WP (I believe), but it's still on in Javanese Wiktionary. You can try edit using the ULS there. Read the documentation if you never used ULS before.

Technical note: the font that I use, Tuladha Jejeg, and probably all JS Unicode font, have bigger line-height that normal Latin fonts, therefore an accompanying css is usually preferred, otherwise, the script will overlap one another. But there's a downside to this, as the Latin words in between will look ugly. Also, in Javanese manuscripts, one usually don't transliterate foreign names and terms (as you can see from my examples above), so I don't know how this is technically could be accomplished with an automated one.
