Images on many wikipedias
editPlease do not unilaterally replace perfectly good images on multiple wikipedias with those of your own without discussion. I especially refer to pictures of the Old Well at UNC-Chapel Hill where the image you added was of the wrong aspect ratio for almost all the pages and of inferior composition. Thank you. 71.70.143.158 (talk) 01:33, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. I was just being bold until told otherwise, as I thought my image was of superior quality and much higher resolution. I see what you are saying about the ratio, and I apologise for interfering with your work. What is the best way to go about proposing new images for the UNC article? I'm adding a large number of what I personally consider good images to the Wikimedia Commons and would like to at least offer them to the Wikipedia community. --Specious (talk) 02:05, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
UNC Photos
editWe could certainly have two pictures. A good photo of Polk Place would certainly be better than the one captioned "Campus in the summer". A better picture of Old East with the Old Well in the foreground would also be useful if you happen to be in the area, as would one of the Rameses statue at Kenan Stadium as I just took a quick cell phone picture as I walked by. I don't have a preference about people in photos.
If you're looking for things to photograph on campus, other articles that could possibly do with better pictures are:
- Ackland Art Museum (on Columbia St)
- Charlie Justice (statue near Kenan Stadium)
- Davie Poplar (McCorkle Place)
- Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies (maybe photos of New East and New West where the chambers are located)
- Dramatic and performing arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (any of the theaters)
- Old Chapel Hill Cemetery (South Rd/Country Club Rd)
- Old East (Cameron Ave/McCorkle Place)
- Rameses (statue near Kenan Stadium)
- Silent Sam (McCorkle Place)
- Eddie Smith Field House (South Rd)
- Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar SUV attack (photo of the Pit)
- University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication (Carroll Hall)
- University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work (Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building on Pittsboro St)
- Woollen Gymnasium (South Rd)
Not all of those might be possible at the moment because of construction work, though. --Hippo (talk) 20:14, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Perfect! I'll take this list with me on my future visits to UNC. Tonight, though, I'll be uploading photos of Battle Park and Franklin Street -- perhaps not the most exciting photos. The photo of Old East (with the well) illustrates the section on student housing. Would perhaps a shot of one of the bigger dorms be more illustrative? Also, I'd like to mention that I found some buildings to be difficult subjects due to obstructions, like Phillips. --Specious (talk) 06:57, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Wikimapia
editHi. I saw your post on Jimbo Wales's talk page and think it would be a great idea. The ones who work on geography here have long thought wikimapia the best site for obtaining coordinates, particularly on smaller settlements and landmarks. I would like to see wikimapia taken under the wiing of the wikimedia personally as it is the mapping project we are missing. What my goal is is to have an encyclopedia articles on every one of the features on wikimapia. I would very much like to see wikimapia adopted by wikimedia and to becoming a branch of our project. That would be awesome. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:56, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
Wikimapia
editPlease DO NOT recommend further co-operation with this site, at best thier terms of use are unhelpful.
In addition concerns have been raised as to what if any thier commerical relationship with the data providers their imagery is sourced from
Why not work with geo-data projects that are genuinely 'free' like Open Street Map?
Proposal to shut down WP Geographic Coordinates & ban coordinates on wikipedia articles
