Gymnastics templates

edit

Hey there, Skeetidot!!!

Looks like I stepped in it. Eeek.

I was sort of conflicted about the all-around templates. I felt that because it's a much more prestigious title than an individual event final, it should somehow be more noticable (which is also why I changed all World Championship footer/navigation boxes headbars to a lighter shade of yellow than the Olympic ones). I couldn't think of another way to do that other than to make them bold. I will be the first to admit that I'm not an advanced formatter and I know nothing about script. I am just good at observing and copying and pasting. Haahaaa. Anyway, you are right about the bold for the pertinent gymnast not standing out any more in those AA templates and yes I am conflicted about that. I certainly won't mind if you change them. I would ask that we discuss it first, but then again, did I discuss these changes beforehand? *eek*, no I didn't.

As for the pipes vs. dots, I had seen those pipes elsewhere before, and I truly did feel that they did a better job of separating the year-to-gymnast matches than the dots did. I also did confer with a few people in the non-virtual world and they all agreed that the bars looked better and did a better job of separating them.

There was also a problem with wrapping. A lot of the time, a year-to-gymnast match would be separated by wrapping around to the next line (e.g. "1964" would be at the end of one line and "Caslavska" would be at the beginning of the next), and I felt like that had to be corrected/improved, so I copied the script that I discovered helped to correct that and applied it to each template.

Additionally, I also hyperlinked all of the Olympics templates titles to the lists of Olympic medalists in gymnastics page on Wikipedia.

Because I made a few changes each and because I was doing too much all at once to not go braindead (I did this all in like 2 or 3 days time which also meant making sure that I had the names right for each of the gymnasts and that if any page existed, I linked to the correct one, as well as creating the templates and making sure they were transcluded onto each individual's bio page), I merely said "overhaul" when I had already conferred with others and decided on what the best revisions to each would be and then when I did all of the final revisions to each and harmonized each, I merely said "overhaul". I was afraid that that would come off as arrogant, but again, here I claim the "braindead" and "careless" escuse. By that time, I had actually single-handedly copy-created templates for each individual event champion for men and women at all World Championships since 1903, so that truly made me braindead. LOL. Anyway, I thought that the templates should be harmonized. I didn't see where there would have been any talk on any of the templates, and I looked at the Wikiproject: gymnastics group and didn't see any discussion (where some of the templates were shepherded and made it look like they were a brainchild of the project), so I took the liberties of what seemed like a "tabula rasa" at the time.

I'm glad, however, to see that somebody noticed and cared, regardless of whether or not that's supportive or non-supportive.

The boldface thing - I think that you are probably right. But do you think that there is any other way to make that template stand out more than the EF templates?

Cheers and thanks so much for the attention. I eagerly invite your input as well as maybe some future collaboration? Are you also really invested/interested in the advancement of gym info on Wikipedia? Miloluvr (talk) 19:44, 19 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Bio pic janelle.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Bio pic janelle.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Re: Images

edit

Hi... just because images have been used in a previous article doesn't mean the usage is correct! Most of the images used in the article you pointed out to me are not actually being used properly so I will have to deal with it at some point. The general rule is that fair use images are only permitted where they illustrate something of importance (i.e. something where it is important that it is visually shown) were no free image is available or could possibly be found in the future. As such, all those images you have uploaded are categorised as "replaceable fair use" and are basically copyright violations. This is a pretty murky and contentious policy area so this is just my interpretation of the guidelines... feel free to ask other editors for advice if you want to. -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 00:51, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Bio alison.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Bio alison.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Allegheny County Map

edit

Skeet, nice work on the Allegheny County Map with Aspinwall. It's looks great and really adds to the Geobox to have all maps with the same color scheme. Keep up the good work. Just two small suggestions: it'd be best to upload these images to the Commons and you should probably use longer more descriptive names. This will be especially important for names that are used by multiple municipalities in PA. VerruckteDan 23:25, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Skeet, thanks for the beautiful maps! I used to use a program for multiple uploads at Commons (and I think it was Commonplace, but it is no longer on my computer so I am not sure). Anyway, it stopped working some time ago (over a year ago) and I have been doing uploads individually since. I looked at the Help section at Commons and found that the program Commonist still is used. I have not used it successfully - I tried to install it back when Commonplace stopped working, but couldn't get it to work right on my computer. If it is similar to Commonplace then it should help you fix all the file names at once. I would try uploading 2 or 3 maps first, just to make sure it works and you have all the parameters correct. The only other advice I can give is to get the names right the first time. I am currently working in maps for the 100 counties in North Carolina. I save all my maps to a common directory and have a dummy file with the name I want except for the county name, then I pick the dummy file and edit it so I only have to type in the county name when I save. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 12:18, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Saw the new gallery of Allegheny County maps, they look great. Can't wait to see them on the articles. VerruckteDan 21:30, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Glad Commonist works for you - now I have someone to ask when I try it again ;-). The maps look nice and as far as I know Commons does not delete files that are not used elsewhere as long as they are free files in the first place. Keep up the good work, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:29, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Elevation

edit

Skeet, just wanted to bring a resource to your attention. The GNIS database [1], is a great source that provides the coordinates and elevation of any geographic feature in the country. It is a common source used in Wikipedia and there is wikicode to provide a quick Geographic reference to it (See the superscript that is often right after "As of Census 2000..." in articles for an example). These references link here and the GNIS is #3. Just thought this might save you some time and help in keeping the Geoboxes and Wikipedia in general in drawing this information from one official government source. Name origin

Just an FYI about name origins. I like how you're including them in the free field. Seeing them reminded me that creating a parameter for name origins was on my list of things for the Geobox. Fair use disputed for Image:Bio pic janelle.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Bio pic janelle.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. T Rex | talk 05:59, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Point State Park Geobox 2.0 reversion

I reverted Point State Park as the new Geobox said the area type was acres, but gave the area as 36 square miles (and the corresponding square kilometers). I tried a couple of things to fix it, but since the old Geobox worked here and the new one does not, I reverted to the old one. Thanks for switching and feel free to switch back once the problem is fixed, but "acres 36 mi2" makes no sense. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:37, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of File:Eastland Mall.jpg

edit

The file File:Eastland Mall.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Newspaper scan from 1988; free license is extremely dubious.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 01:20, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
