edit

Been in BlofeldBot mode today. Template:Communes of the Sikasso Region is ready for tagging! ONe thing though can you tag them as stub class rather than start class! They are definately stubs! Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:34, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey amigo. Thanks again you AWB menace you LOL!! Remember I was telling you about my good friend Kleinzach? Template:Expand Polish is up for deletion if you care to see it! Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:14, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good news. I didn't see the response by one guy on Feb 5 -he changed the license of those 22 images I wanted to attrubition to make the process easier. The urls are given on User:Dr. Blofeld/Flickr agreements. I should be able to upload those this evening I think but I need to be uploading more of Gretes and Jacques images!!. Feeling a little light headed at present though, I'm trying to lose a bit of excess weight (stomach mostly) and have changed my diet and my body is in initial shock at the reduction in carbs at present LOL. I've never had to go on a proper diet before as I've always been very fit and found it hard to gain much fat but my weakness for chocolate and carb overloading on potatoes for many months has finally taken its toll on the stomach so a fat burning diet and increased exercise for a two week period is on the cards for me I'm afraid. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:40, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh I'm just about OK now that my dinner is digesting. If you change your diet it is to be expected at least initially until your metabolism adjusts to the change. I've always lifted weights, rowing, swimming several times a week but more recently I've felt too tired to do it as much as I used to. But if anything its more than to rid of a bit of little excess stomach fat, of late I've been feeling less energetic physically and finding myself feeling a little lethargic thats why I saw the doctor this morning about it. I eat far too much chocolate which gives me a major boost in energy and I'll be firing on all cylinders but I;ve noticed within an hour afterwards it makes me feel tired and difficult to concentrate and often gives me headaches, either that or the cheese!. I think there is a lot to be said about cutting down on sugar in the blood and cutting down on the carbs and processed fats and eating more natural fresh foods and taking regular exercise. A high protein diet takes longer to digest apparently so will make you feel less hungry than usual and less likely to want to pig out on a pack of crisps or cake or something and cutting down the carbs will make the body turn to burning fats as fuel. It is amazing really how the body works. "You are what you eat" as they say, I usually laugh at all those weight obsessed "celebs" who weigh like 110 pounds and still think they are fat and I usually have always scoffed at people who diet to lose weight but it has to be said eating the right sort of natural foods really can make a massive difference to your concentration and level of well being above all else. Even Bruce Lee, one of my heroes always used to say things like "give your body the wrong fuel and it will perform sluggishly" things like that. I mean I still eat a lot of vegetables, fish and meat and things anyway but I always though I could get away with eating a lot of junk too. But when it starts to affect your concentration and how your mind is feeling too, then its time to do something about it! Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:52, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

If you are interested see the 22 images here (which I have to sort out url links now on) and uploads by Jacques Taberlet here. Looks as if Jacques has an account on French wiki and has uploaded some himself meaning I am not alone in uploading them. Everything OK? Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:15, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Top a da morning to ya laddie. I'm OK for AWB until I get the next batch done. Last night I grew too light headed so had to eat a small bowl of cornflakes to keep me conscious! It felt weird, my brain felt like it had run out of fuel! I've decided to moderate the eating plan a bit and add a bit more carbohydrate, I underestimated what it takes to keep me going! So lunch time now I'll have like a salmon salad and cheese or something and a piece of toast with a dab of mayo to keep me going. Cutting out the chocolate and potatoes for two weeks ought to do the trick although I'll have to hide the bar of Firkløver my parents brought me back from Norway. I've always found it easy to burn off fat anyway, my dads the same, hes still really slim at 60. I'm starting to see results already but my abs kind of feel bruised from all the crunches! In two weeks I'll be back to how I was before but I think I'll try to make an effort to eat better in the future. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:04, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey whats this about "finding an acid wipe or something for his bald head". Now thats not very nice -Don't be baldist LOL. I'm feeling better already its working already. Weep weep four years of edits to this article wiped out because of some copyvio by the looks of it. It is in a dreadful state, perhaps we should translate from French? It is an article on a capital city for franks sake and it is worse than most village articles. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:11, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I know that I do it all the time but the delete has used his admin tools to yank out 4 years of history so you cant' restore the January 2009 version or at least use it to rewrite. He has completely removed 4 years of article history, it can de done although seems a bit extreme. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:28, 15 February 2009 (UTC) A copy vio apparently, somebody complained about it and you know the moment somebody mentions copyright -extreme action is taken -wiping out 4 years of work because somebody back in 2005 add some copyrighted paragraphs and all the versions in between will be "copyrighted". I'd at least like to see the former article to see what I can do with it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:44, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fraid not. The deleting admin won't allow me to view the former page as he thinks I'll "make a mess of it" in making derititives. I had it on my list to transwiki anyway. The article was not great but it was a fuller article for sure. At present the article is an embarrassment, there are five million living in the city!!! Perhaps we could collaborate on gradually translating it from French wiki? COuld be done gradually over a few weeks, a few minutes at a time anything on what we have at the moment. Great news about our language templates. Check out Huancavelica for example. Jen's new addition mean that by applying the tags articles can be directly translated!! This is sort of what I have been looking for, although I would rather we had our own instant translate system but this is the best we can do at the moment. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:20, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Great news for readers, but not if people actually put them in Wikipedia The policy has always been that machine translation need careful manual revision by someone who know the subject, and both languages. Consider one random paragraph from that article:

"The city of Lima and surrounding areas have several historic tourist attractions, churches, archaeological sites, forests, etc.. Among its most prominent tourist attractions are about 8 churches belonging to the building styles Huancavelicano economic boom with the discovery of its mines. Also to Puyas Raimondi, whose flowering occurs only once."

Could one of you point me to that discussion, because this potentially good idea needs some modification. DGG (talk) 01:46, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

More evidence of how I create worthwhile stubs!! Bring em on I say. Once my Mali and Mexico municipalities are up and running I iz going to go crazy with this transwikiying. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:55, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

A tag has been placed on Alexander Dulichenko, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Template:Expand Frisian

edit

Hi AlbertHerring, I've been standardizing all the translation templates, as I think you have seen. With languages that use the Latin alphabet, I'm using a system of adopting the pagename as a default to create a link to the other wikipedia. (This will work well going forward, I think, because many of the articles will be geographic locations and biographies that have the same title in both languages.) It appears, though that the Frisian articles that have been tagged so far generally do not have the same name in English as in Frisian. (Looks like English uses the name from Dutch or German or whatever other language is in use.) Do you think the Frisian tag should be changed so that it doesn't adopt this default, and will be more like our tags for Chinese or Russian? Or should we (hopefully you! :) ) just add the extra article-name parameter for the articles so far tagged? Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:50, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the basic question is, should the template take the pagename as the default? (That is, will most articles have non-Frisian names, that is the German or whatever name?) I can make it so this is not the default (so the default is no link at all) by changing the {{Expand Frisian}} tag so that it is generated by a {{Expand language (non-Latin script)}}.
And then, if we decide it should take the pagename as default, you just have to change it from {{Expand Frisian}} to {{Expand Frisian|Frisian article name}} in the articles. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:58, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Another request (I started this, but it turned out to be too tedious....): Template:Expand French also takes page titles as default. This is fine for most articles, but for things where there is a comma or parentheses or something else that looks English in the title the link is created incorrectly. I suppose it's not the biggest deal in the world (some people may come across it, click the link and believe there's nothing there, then remove the tag), but it would be good if it were sorted out eventually. If you are interested, you can start making your way through them all... Oh and for future reference just to be clear: because the new template takes pagenames as defaults, you're ok not specifying anything where the pagenames are the same, but where they're different, you should do {{Expand French (or whatever language that uses the latin alphabet)|French article title}}. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:13, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I'll change the template so it doesn't make any links unless a title is specified. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:15, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! This project is actually quite exciting, I think! I've just started a discussion at WP:TRANSLATION about whether this should be the primary translation system on wiki. The current one I think pretty much sucks. I've never even figured out how to use it.... I think this template system has so much promise, so thank you to you and Blofeld for thinking it up! Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:21, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Let me know if you think of other language templates that could be useful. Now that I've got it standardized, it takes about fifteen seconds to build each of them. I'll make a Sardinian one once I'm finished converting the last few. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:35, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Satellite map

edit

Check out the mini atlas satellite map on Kokry and zoom in to 1 km and click on full screen. Its getting better you can make out the green fields next to the Niger River. It takes ages to load though. Eventually I would like to see a higher quality map with great detail like microsoft earth 3d. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:59, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yah I noticed those. Nice. ONe thing though you should include details about them rather than just saying "Taken by me for wikipedia". Images in some way are part of the encyclopedia and there is nothing which explains where it is. It could be from Venice for all we know! Just state who or what it is, where it was taken, and date and then stamp your name on it as author. Images you take should be uploaded to the commons, you shouldn't have worries that somebody will delete them, the commons admins only fuss about images other people take when you upload other peoples images and permissions. If you uploaded them to the commons to images can also be housed in a category and neatly organised. If you copied the uploading template each time it shouldn't take two seconds longer to add the basics on the photo. Just a hint anyway. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:52, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

See File:Ferdinando II by Foggini.jpg Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:05, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Looks a wonderful museum anyway. Some of the worlds best institutions are in Washington D.C and New York City aren't they. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well yes the date is mentioned in the camera but not where it was taken and the context. You don't have to upload to the commons if you don't like it of course, but when the times comes that is inevitably will be moved to the commons to allow other wikiprojects to share your images if the photo just says "Taken by me" without even a line of what it is and what museum etc it will make it pretty tough to chase up for other people. You do want these images used by other people in other language wikiprojects right? Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:14, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

You're MEAN!! Quite aevil in fact, a place for you with SPECTRE is open. What about all those little Vietnamese children who want to learn about western art and American museums? Hi Albert. WHat would you say about AWB tagging the German municipalities? Most of them are stubby and have articles like this on German wiki. Would you be up for running your AWB on a few areas of Germany to add the trnaslation tags? Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:50, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh main space definately. Well you pick one at random like Lobbach for instance and is virtually a dead cert that the German wikipedia article will be lengthy and referenced, perfect translation material. I would start on Baden-Württemberg . However I would do it by district or at least preview some of them as ones like Aalen may be more developed but still not as developed as German wikipedia. In reality they could probably all do with some level of translation from German wikipedia but I would stick with the lesser articles for now, just in case somebody from the German project starts fussing about any tagging of long articles. Perhaps use the stub categories as an AWB list, this way you are assured that you don't tag any good articles. I think these tags are extrmeely important in building up the stubs we have on Germany, Switzerland, Austria as most of them are massively better on German wikipedia. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:00, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

So I would use Category:Baden-Württemberg geography stubs. It has 3 or 4 sub categories too Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:02, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wow!! more for the AWB pile, this list needs emptying. Removing the dinosaur age translation tags from old requests which Jen is currently ploughing through manually I think to replace the old system with our near scheme. I'm taking a break for the mo, will return in an hour or so. Should keep you busy for a while! Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:10, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't think you should AWB this. Some of the requests are still valid, but others are not. I don't think there's any automated way to easily compare the current contents of the en.wiki page and the non-english page. This system was still used up until yesterday, so not all of them are that old. Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:29, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I think that should be fine. Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:37, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh, OK, but I think you misinterpreted what I meant... I meant remove the old translation tag in the talk pages by AWB and the replace it with the tag in the main articles afterwards where valid. It would most likely need partial monitoring to judge whether or not the request is valid. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

If "you" meant me, I think I understood... The problem is that so much human intervention is needed (are the articles the same? which article is the tag even referring to? since it's all nonstandard) that AWB wouldn't speed it up at all. Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:35, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh and Albert, Blofeld thinks we shouldn't do the categories. I'm not really committed one way or the other. Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:36, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I love you (and I mean that in a very respectful not quite creepy way). Thank you for your edit this afternoon...I'm still tweaking the article some. Do you think we should implement an optional topic parameter for the templates (maybe the way FAs are sorted?) so that the category doesn't get overwhelmed with geography stubs? Some translators might be bored by those... Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:47, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I'll think about how to do that. Do you want to help generate a category list? I don't think we should have more than ten categories or so, otherwise it is too complicated. I'm not very good at coding either! I go very, very slowly... Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:53, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh I just meant something like 1) history 2) biography 3) geography or something like that. I'm just not sure what would be the best way to break down the articles. Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:59, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I was completely lost yesterday, I had so much on my mind I can't remember what I said or did. Basically I was just waiting for the phone to ring all day. I felt terrible last night, not particularly upset just depressed with February and that but I think I can put that behind me now. Anyway I'll try to focus almost entirely on wikipedia while I'm on here. How did you get on with the tag? Been AWBing? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:01, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah I'm OK buddy, still recovering from the food earlier in the week. I've just been tackling a few of those Indian films I started on New Years Eve so far 305 down, 45 to go!! Perhaps next time I'll only create 100 in one go at max as it is monotonous work!! When I get my energy back I'll probably continue tagging and my Mali work. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:29, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

User:Anybot is though (in a hurry). Ten new articles a minute. I guess it is something like the species bot we proposed, just a little disappointing how empty they are. My plan was that they at least had some starter information. Check out the new pages. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:04, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yup and can be expanded. Naturally it will takes years for them to all develop but at least it is heading in the right direction. Since wiki species was started its seems we lost a lot of our regular contributors to this department on here who moved to look after the new site and the number of red links on here is enormous. Eventually there should be millions of articles on species and genus etc but it is a shame how many just say "" is a species of marmalade frog. Lipton Ice is a genus of Antarctican clover etc. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:17, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've revisited many articles recently that I created a while back. Xinjiang Medical University for instance now look at it. LOL we even have Template:Xinjiang Medical University and related articles! There are hundreds even thousands of stub articles I've created which have undergone development since so it really gives me confidence that I'm doing good work even if I haven't the time to fully write each one. OK a lot of articles I've created are still stubs but it is still early days on here, I think it is more important we get the articles up and running first. It feels quite good actually knowing that is is worthwhile in the long term. If I feel up to it later I think I may create more of those politician stubs. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:45, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

At least I think I know what the sickness I had and am still suffering the effects of at the moment. Something called Norovirus. I would have passed it off as Salmonella but now my mum has the bug and it is made me look more into it. Apparently there was this virus going about in the home my grandma was at, she didn't die from it but it seems a cooincidence that it also reduces your energy and makes you feel very weak. If it hits a healthy man in his mid twenties hard imagine what any virus would do to a 103 year old. The way it is caught it says extremely prone to catching it in hospitals, nursing homes and schools. So I think that can explain it, I caught it while visiting her at the beginning of the week. At least I don't feel sick anymore but it is the dehydration thing for a few days thats been weird. You'll drink cups and cups of water and it will seemingly make no difference and light fever still. Wow I'm not surprised she got ill living in a home like that. Apparently the same endemic has been happening on ships too. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:18, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fun isn't it! Jen has made a bot proposal see Wikipedia:Bot requests/Archive 25#Detection of articles that are better in other wikipedias. At present though we seem to have a had some disagreement. Anyway I stubbed some Swedes earlier and I just created Sri Lankan film stubs and some article to hit 60! Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:37, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorting articles needing translation

edit

So I've decided we should do the category thing after all. The french category has over 9,000 but is completely swamped with geography articles. For now, I've implemented (for French only) a biography category (use topic=bio) and a geography category (use topic=geo). It will be trivial to add more categories as needed. The categorization is optional but if you're doing large numbers of articles it would be best to use it. Would it be possible for you to add this parameter to geography articles you've tagged in the past? Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:54, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Great! If you're going to do big quantities of another language, let me know so I can set it up. Calliopejen1 (talk) 19:00, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is great that we are actually seeing articles getting translated. Because I made the template with instructions to place a template on the talk page, we can see which articles are getting done. (And since the redirect they paste to that template is one I just created, there are few false positives. Today I found that Rene Beaumont and Anden had been expanded - one by an IP and one by a new user (about 20 edits?). I think this is probably something a lot of readers can do, especially when the encyclopedia is getting full enough that few have new knowledge in their head they can add without major policy violations and catching a lot of flack. Translation is pretty foolproof as a way to get involved. Anyways, the idea of finding missing articles in other languages has been done before for es, de, and fr. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/es for example. Looks like User:BillC compiled one of the lists in the past. You should ask him if he'll do it again! Calliopejen1 (talk) 19:34, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, no, he compiled it by querying a database dump for all articles having X number of interwikis but no interwiki to english - totally comprehensive, totally automated. We'd obviously have to start the articles after, but that part is totally by machine. Calliopejen1 (talk) 19:49, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. I've been setting up more subcategories lately. Japanese, German, French, Spanish, and Italian all have

| geo = Geography
| gov = Government and politics
| culture = Culture
| hist = History
| sci = Science
| tech = Technology
| sport = Sports
| transport = Transportation
| struct = Building and structure

So just use topic=whatever and that should work. I think I've decided that biography is not a good category. Because who is interested in biography as such? I think it would be better to sort out politicians into the politics category, scientists into the science category, etc. So I'll try to recategorize the french bio articles so I can delete that. Any other categories you think we need? Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:29, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jan Blockx

edit

Hello AlbertHerring. Thank you for seeing my article about Blockx. Maybe you can tell I am not very old from how I write. I hope I am getting better but if you want to change how I said something I do not mind.

I have never heard anything by Blockx except I played a Flemish Dance by him last year when my hands got big enough to play octaves on the piano. It had strong octaves but they were not too fast or too long.

There is some Italian in your signature. Is that from La Gioconda? Teenly 20:31, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mali

Hey you haven't spoken to me in a week! Whats wrong? Busy? It always seems I am the one speaking to you, when was the last time you spoke to me and it wasn't a response to my message? LOL. I could sure have done with cheering up the last week or so. I'm OK now though but will be glad when the funeral is over. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:51, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've finished starting all the communes and main villages in Mali anyway. If you could tag every articles in the following with WikiProject Africa|Mali=yes|class=stub I'd be grateful.

Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:51, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes I figured you were still having work troubles as you haven't been about as much, or so it seems. Ah just nice to talk every few days with people thats all, helps me get through hard going tasks on here. I was speaking to the Sri Lankan guy I came across and Jen so thats something. Anyway I've red linked the Guinean and Cote d Ivore communes ready for starting next, of course there is also Mauritania to finish off. If I can get most of the thrid level areas of western Africa started this will be a considerable progression from the lack of coverage we had before. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:01, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Those are great images. Fine pieces of art. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:06, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps you could think about starting the missing Italian politicians articles sometime. Check it out. There are 72 sub categories alone. Astounding. Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:05, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tis great./ Thanks Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:11, 1 March 2009 (UTC) Seems the services of the Bald One are appreciated even in Honduras see Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:26, 1 March 2009 (UTC) Hey I was wondering if you would be up for helping me move the page titles of the Districts of Vietnam. You see really the pages should be in the Vietnamese titles with diuretics but also with the suffix District per convention. Aside from this when I come around to starting the communes the district and commune/village names will need to be disambed anyway so moving to district would seem the most plausiable way to tackle it. So for instance Tran Van Thoi should be moved to Trần Văn Thời District. I was waondering if AWB could be programmed to move all the titles to the Vietnamese language naming and to add District after it? Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:32, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

If you could start with Template:Districts of Mekong Delta and work backwards from the bottom. If the name is in bold or/and is an urban district it is basically a town so should remain as it is, move to Vietnamese title if possible. However most of them are districts (huyen) so should be moved to Vietnamese title with District after it. Thanks for helping out Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:41, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes exactly. Its just the last few days I've been going though starting to add infoboxes and basic details and Vietnamese expand tags and to the casual eye they looked like towns not districts. Needs a great deal of work Vietnam but if we can at least get a solid foundation for them things will start to improve. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:48, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually the other way round Cái Bè is a huyen so should be Cái Bè District and Trà Vinh is a town so should remain as it is. Good way to tell is if the articles is categorised as Category:Cities, towns and villages in Vietnam! Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:05, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Its a little frustrating isn't it to see all these articles in such a state. We have full articles on tiny villages in place slike the UK and then entire districts let alone communes and villages within them existing but the territorial areas so lacking like this. Even most of the Vietname province articles are stubs. Some day I really hope that we have fuller articles on these places as undoubtedly there is a lot that could be written, Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:19, 1 March 2009 (UTC) Template:Districts of Central Highlands. Afterwards though we also need to correct the links in the templates and in the provincial articles. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:34, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Go ahead from the top if you like, I'll begin corretcing the links on the previous template. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:38, 1 March 2009 (UTC) Remember also that the provinces should be moved to the correct titles though. This means than if there ar emore than one district with the same name and it ends in a province suffix like Bac Lieu it should all be in the correct nem rather than the district in Vietnamese and the province anglicized, Later we should move the provinces to the correct Vietnamese titles for consistency. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:49, 1 March 2009 (UTC) For example Bình District, Bạc Liêu Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:50, 1 March 2009 (UTC) Yeah I don't know why they removed the lettering. Nobody would think of removing the accent from French places, so why Vietnamese? On standard ENglish maps these places have the proper leterring, I think we should be the same and stick to official lettering unless it is in Chinese or something! Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:53, 1 March 2009 (UTC) Well we could probably do that afterwards as there will be a lot of link chasing up afterwards in templates and existing articles to avoid directs or double directs etc. Whatever you are happy with. ANything you can contribute to is very helpful on this in whatever order. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:55, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK thanks. If you feel like some more later there is Template:Districts of North Central Coast. I'm gonna take a breather now, I'll be back tomorrow most likely, I've been sorting Vietnam for hours now! Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:09, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well the other day I created Category:Vietnam district templates. So far I'm formatted four of them. Tomorrow I'll probably continue to format them and stub sort at the same time as I've done today. Probably I will move the pages before i format the remaining templates to save me having to correct the titles. Any you can do in advance would be a great help for sure. you can view them in the sub cats at Category:Districts of Vietnam. Just a few every day should get this mother crunker sorted in a week or so and have infoboxes and at least some data imported from Vietnamese wiki. Bring on the clones, I wish. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:16, 1 March 2009 (UTC) Phew. I am now really going, I got sidetracked...! Hasta luego. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:23, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

If you are interested in this subject there is an interesting illustrated article (in Czech) about Zimbabwean sculpture here. The title kamenné sochy ze Zimbabwe means "Stone sculpture from Zimbabwe". To paraphrase what it says about Lucky Office (under ČTVRTÁ GENERACE (současnost), ie "Fourth Generation (Present)"): in Chitungwize there are numerous "workshops" in which famous masters live and work in close relationship with aspiring artists who make small stone souvenir pieces to survive, while working on their serious art in their free time. It is said that many stars of Zimbabwean sculpture of the 21st century will emerge from these workshops, that some of them (Lucky Office is named) have advanced to being shown at the National Gallery and will be expected to be well known to the galleries of the world. Katica Durica (talk) 14:56, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
You are very welcome — and don't miss the galerie soch k prodeji tab. Sorry, that means "gallery sculptures for sale", but the pictures are plentiful and excellent (Click on the B&W thumbnails, in case it isn't immediately obvious) and downloadable, for your own enjoyment at least. I especially recommend Sloni ("Elephants") by Robson Mbonge — the second picture in the first collection under the title Ukázky menších soch ("Samples of smaller sculptures") — for people one meets from time to time. Pagemoves

edit

I have two questions:

  1. Did you ask around at any notice boards before starting to make them (I'd understand if this was just 2 or 3 pages moves but with the amount you're doing you really have to check first)
  2. I think the speed your doing them is a bit too fast, are you using a bot or a script? If so please get it approved, if not please slow down a bit.

Thanks --Chris 03:21, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please stop

edit

Kindly stop making a massive number of undiscussed page moves of Vietnamese place name articles to titles with diacritics, before looking in and making a proposal at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Vietnam. Thank you for this consideration. Badagnani (talk) 04:24, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry, I don't understand. You are moving pages, in huge numbers, and haven't generated consensus for such at WikiProject Vietnam. It's very important to do so before continuing to do what you have been doing. Badagnani (talk) 05:31, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I might have known there would be somebody. Nobody bothers to edit a single one of the articles and they remain as sub stubs yet the moment somebody tries to make an effort to begin sorting them out suddenly people appear. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:24, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well I'm continuing with it. Accountable also agrees fully with it. I don't think a Vietnam project discussion on it would have achieved any results as to the best of my knowledge there are only one or two active contributors to the project, especially on Vietnam geo articles, well the articles speak for themselves. I'd like to see what Badagnai has to say on it though, I find it odd he would make a thing of it when he creates articles on people using the official naming system. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:09, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm only doing a small amount today. I havne't been here most of the day. I won't be here tomorrow as I have the funeral. At least I'm back in good shape anyway, the stomach has gone! although I can't give up chocolate! Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:16, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah they're urban districts I think townships. Thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:41, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Request to move article Duy Xuyen incomplete

edit

You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Duy Xuyen to a different title - however your request is either incomplete or has been contested for being controversial, and has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete will be removed after five days.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added a place for discussion at the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved. This can easily be accomplished by adding {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the page, which will automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 06:18, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Districts and Provinces

edit

Is there a source that the official name is "X District" etc? People don't usually use "California State" "Tamil Nadu state" "Guangdong Province" etc, although for some reason everything in VN is tagged "Vinh Long Province etc". In the case of things like "District 1, Saigon", "5th Arrondissement, Paris" etc, the common nouns are needed but where do the Province and District come into most of the proper nouns. Hello!

edit

Hello! I'm feeling better thanks. Yes best thing is to tag all of the lacking German municipalities. Switzerland and Austria too. I was browsing last night and only thinking how much we ar eprgoressing in regards to Category:Cities by country. I remember I stubbed a load of Hungarian villages a while back and never thought they would amount to anything much but looking on Hungarian wiki which is developing rapidly it has good articles on most of the villages! So taggin Hungarian villages would be very useful, not sure how many speak Hungarian though! Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:14, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Have you finished all of the German municipalities? How much did you do? Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:31, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well probably best we mix it up a little it can get boring taggin the same for too long. I think though I can get Swiss municipalities tagged manually. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:38, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well at AWB rate you'd probably get them done in so time at all. Yes I think the provinces should be recategorised although I don't want any complaints from anybody about it. Main thing is sirting out the districts but it should be consistent for sure. I can give the Swiss municipalities to you if you watnt o get that out of the way. I;ve done one or two cantons already Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:43, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hokey doke, Category:Municipalities of Switzerland by canton, I've done Aargau and some from another one which I can't recall. You could probably shoot through those cats in no time. On my travels last night I also spotted towns in Belarus that are one liners and have good articles in Belarussian. Of course there is a huge amount to do for pretty much everywhere but these are what stood out for starters. I was quite pleased with the progress since I last looked, some editors seem to be emulating a lot of the work I do, somebody has copied by examples on templates for sinance and has started adding a lot of towns in Bolivia which I had meant to get around to. Similarly another has been adding infoboxes to Guatemalan municipalities which was also on my list. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:53, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

A shame Editor of the wiki has left us. He was quite a promising editor I thought. FOr some reason he just stopped editing, probably grew tired of wiki by the looks of it and has found something better to do. Perhaps he just needed a break. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:55, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey there. Baldy has been in bot mode again today and churned out some 977 new articles in Category:Communes of Côte d'Ivoire and it aint even 3 o clock!. Judging by the way the department articles have developed on French wikipedia so far, I don't think it out of the question that eventually the number of contributors from this country will increase over time and then eventually they will be full articles on French wiki and on here. I've proved myself right time and time again in regards to information becoming available on places like this so.. Besides we should have an articles on every third level disvision inn the world! It is likely to be years before they all fully develop but at least the places in these countries are starting to get up and running.

Anyway I was wondering if you could AWB the talk pages of articles in this category with
{{WikiProject Africa|CI=yes|class=stub}} Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:06, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cool. Well it is part of my world municipalities project I have going. It is one of my main goals on here to have the third level divisions (communes, municipalities etc) of every country in the world started on here and eventually full coverage of everywhere and articles on villages within these places too!. Vietnam districts and communes of course are part of it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:13, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. SO far I've expanded Abobo. Most are stubs too on French wiki at present which is why I didn't include the translate tags. However I anticipate that eventually these articles will develop on French wiki and we may be able to gain access to info soon enough, The growth of websites in the third world is increasingly dramatically at present, I'm sure you;ve seen evidence of this. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:16, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Something like this I guess in regards to anticpated websites. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:39, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wow you're nearing the top quickly. I'm gonna have to figure out which communes belong to each department the heard way. There is no listing on French wiki so I'll have to add one at a time reading from the articles on French wiki. I've started creating a bunch of templates anyway. An example is Template:Communes of the Bas-Sassandra Region. I thought the burnt orange looked quite cool to emulate the flag. So gradually I will go through the ones I created earlier adding the map coordinates and some funky templates. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:06, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I find that keeps my interest more. Images and color make things more appealing I think. At present even the main cities of the country have been neglected, a real shame. We of course know what even happened to the Abidjan article a few eeks back when it shistory was nuked and we had to start from scratch. Even if content is lacking at present at least organised nav boxes and map coordinates will add something to them. I'll continue with Vietnam districts later, I may stub all of the remaining Mexican municiaplities in a few days too as it has been buggin me for some time to get them all started. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:15, 5 March 2009 (UTC) If I can get them all like Adessé for starters this will be a good platform to build on later. Just imagine how it would look if each of them were full articles with images! Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:25, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Have you noticed how the articles count is increasing like 5 times faster than usual of late. I've seen four different bots generating articles in the last week, it really is great to see, I just wish they would run more consistently. There should be several bots creating thousands of new articles everyday at the same time I think. We've jumped from 2,750,000 to 2,777,000 in a very short period of time. Some of the new articles generated by the bots can easily be programmed to generate decent starter articles by the looks of it. If only we could get something to start all these world places and articles from other wikipedias. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:15, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jen proposed the transaltion bot before, Only one person commented on it unfortunately. I wish we could somehow have more power to influence things but what can we do? Yuck I have 801 articles to go through now on French wikipedia to build up those templates I created earlier. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:30, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah its ugly work. The French would have saved a lot of hassle if they had listed frickin listed the communes under each department or at least created a category. It means I have to fish out each one and assign it to the correct department one at a time. Perhaps I can manage a letter every day perhaps by April I will have the templates formatted. Its is pretty yucky, especially when I'm the type who likes to do things as efficiently as possible. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:20, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I anticipated that it might be a day or two as I thought you said so!, no rush. I've just started the Communes of Cameroon although I won't start the articles for a few days, besides the Departments of Cameroon also need starting of which I have data here!. If you could AWB the Ivory Coast talk pages and apply the expand tags on the Swiss municipalities that would be cool when you have time. I have population and area figures for districts of Vietnam here. Once I've added the infoboxes and expand templates I will ensure they all at least have referenced figures. Any help would be appreciated. The Africa problem is tough though, I'm basically trying to cover as much of the continent as I can. I've also created Sub-prefectures of Guinea which will be started soon, and I also have Senegal to cover, let alone cleaning up and starting the third level units of Nigeria called Locally Governed Areas and finishing off the communes of Mauritania. At least I am making progression. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:46, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Accidentally found a new attractive image on flickr on the recent uploads! File:Adamas.jpg. Man I love the Greek islands. I can't think of anything more of a paradise than being a writer or something and a millionaire and living on a yacht and having a villa in such places. That would be my ideal. Dream.... Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:38, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Reckon this stands any chance of feature?

Cool. Its getting warmer here gradually now although its been cold the last day or two. Greece in the summer though is too hot, 38-48 celsius over 100 degrees nearly every day, Hot hot hot, hotter than most places I tell you. Its nicer in spring or autumn when it isn't so freakishly hot. Turkey is the same. On my bus when we were on a hillside just outside of Alanya in August 1995 it was 49 celsius outside!! Whats that in your money, 110-120 degrees? According to the climate average it is 31 celsius 90 degrees on average but the first week when I was there was a heat wave, you can only imagine... Even the Sahara and death valley reach 58 celsius so it just shows how torching it gets. Yeah anything over 90 degrees is too hot for me. Worse still is when it is very humid. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:51, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I was thinking more in terms of the contrast might appeal to somebody as an effect rather than a beautiful landscape. I'd rather pictures for sure, sunsets are a little overdone anyway aren't they. I've been browsing today, this website really is developing extremely well overall. Just a matter of time and good hands before we see this site quadruple in size and increase in quality. WIkipedia has to be one of the most ambitious projects in history doesn't it? Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:54, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Great. I've found a list of the Chiefdoms of Sierra Leone now too. I've started one district see Sella Limba for an example. I've created a nice Aquafresh looking template and I also found some population data which I'm now adding. So thats a number of country divisions we will have data on. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:34, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes could you do Template:Bombali District with Sierra Leone =yes in the afric aplate. Then the ones I mentioned previously above if you would be so kind. I think I'll finish off those Senegalese arrondissements I started yesterday (which will also need tagging afterwards too!). For CotedIvoire add CI= in the africa plate. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:44, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK Template:Arrondissements of Senegal is now also started. Only the unboldened links need talk page taggin though. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:28, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Template:Communes of Mauritania. I'm currently stubbing them.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:24, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Started them all now. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:41, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thats great! If you are still feeling like AWBing by all means make a start with adding the Expand German tags on Category:Municipalities of Switzerland by canton. I've done Aargau. I see you;ve done a few already, a few days back! Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:02, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Looks like you must have caught the urban cantons. The majority of the rural cantons are way beyond stubs on German wiki. I've just picked one at random Beromünster. Virtually all of them are well developed. I wouldn't have mentioned taggin them otherwuise if they were all stubs on German wiki. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:06, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category:Municipalities of the canton of Lucerne looks a safe bet. I've just check four at random and they are all full articles on German wiki. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:09, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Enjoy dinner, Mauritanian cuisine?? Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:11, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I love East Asian cuisine chicken and curry sauces and that. At present I have a weakness for mango chutney which I even put on crackers or water biscuits or whatever you call them with ham. Thai king prawns are amazing! Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:18, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Most interesting food I ever tasted was on the island of Lombok. Real native stuff. Very interesting soups! In Bangkok and parts of Indonesia they seem to like eating rats on sticks which looks pretty gross it has to be said though. I've just created Template:Departments of Cameroon. I'll try red with gold lettering for Cameroon to make a change from the green. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:33, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

OMG check out the state of Agadir! It looks like a 2002 version! Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:45, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've created a new map of Alberta to begin ridding of the horrid silver maps we have. The maps for places in Canada are a terrible mess. See the pin map for Banff, Alberta. Does this now look OK to you? Sometime I'll have to sort out all the maps and locators for Canada. I'll standardise the territory locator maps in this style is people approve. What do you think? Better than the grey? I've made one for Saskatchewan too. See Estevan.

Swiss painters all up and running, next will be List of Lithuanian painters which I'll start tomorrow. Better continue with Vietnam district now after a break. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:56, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Visuotine lietuviu enciklopedija.General Lithuanian Encyclopedia.Open.jpg
Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia.

I just started 150 painters from the great Lithuanian encyclopedia. The mind boggles how much content is missing from such national encyclopedias, we should be putting all articles in these encyclopedias into wikipedia. The aim is of course eventually we have 150 articles like Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas. I think I'll stick with the Lithuanuian encyclopedia for a bit. There are 225 architect articles on Lithuanian wiki too. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:09, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

More trouble as if ANI wasn't enough, now village pump. proof that it works. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:04, 11 March 2009 (UTC) Yeah its getting tough. Basically the more you try to help wikipedia the more complaints you seem to get. I could have tranlsated 20 articles by now in the time I've spent stating the case at ANI. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:15, 11 March 2009 (UTC) Here here I say. It can be a very offputting seeing that so many are against creating stubs, even the ones the Swedish guy identified earlier are still articles on notable people in Sweden which should be developed into good articles. The tags and translation is intended as an initial step, reliable sources to back up claims are then added later as the articles develop. Phew, I've had a tough one today, I started all those articles on Guatemalan writers and that too! Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:33, 11 March 2009 (UTC) Mm if the complaints continue I may have to try adding some google translated text to eveyr one I start. The process will be slower but it may stop the complaints. Of course I could google translate every one and paste it in but every article will need cleanup then and probably redoing so its best it is done properly I think. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:54, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm feeling quite upset today in all honesty by the way that some editors regard me on here. Creating stubs seems to make them ignore any quality writing I do on here. I disagree with Hedwig in that even the unreferenced articles on other wikipedias can be beneficial. I just translated Virgilio Rodríguez Macal from an unreferenced article. We just need to find solid sources on the subject thats all. We ar emuch better for having it than not. How though can I find a balance between starting articles on here enmasse and starting them at a standard which will stop this ANI complaints? I just hate the way these people "report me" as if I'm a vandal. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:38, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah its just when they say things like "all Dr. Blofeld does is create useless stubs", having never seen my real editing history. Well I know its untrue, you know its untrue and so do others. I noticed that not one of the stubs I created was speedy tagged, if there were many who thought they should be deleted then they would have tried to speedy them so at least thats something. Wow how many centuries ago was that, must be what late 18th century? Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:04, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wow sounds old. And another Pablo Atchugarry. The question is can people put up with ugly stubs until the articles are translated? Maybe I'm different but I can see beyond whatever state an article is in initially and can see how they will look within minutes of editing. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:03, 12 March 2009 (UTC) It is a shame though more people don't show an interest in topics in other parts of the world. The articles I start may seem obscure to some people but articles I "sub stubbed" yesterday Carlos Solórzano and Flavio Herrera in particular are two of the biggest names in literature in the country but probably unheard by the majority in the western world. It is a dilemma though between struggling to at least get them blue linked and having to spent time writing them. I hopefully can find a happy medium with a few lines to my stubs which won't cause too much upset at ANI. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:22, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

COuld you project tag by adding this to Category:Articles needing translation from Lithuanian Wikipedia using AWB? Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:20, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I've just started some Latvian architects and it really it quite simple to add some setences using google translate. Its just often there are just so many articles to start it often seems easier to just blue link them like I did with the painters. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:28, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I rejected this speedy, as the article now asserts notability. You might want to nominate it for an AfD discussion instead. Tim Vickers (talk) 18:34, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of Helle Aan

edit

A tag has been placed on Helle Aan requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. seicer | talk | contribs 13:10, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've started the Deputies of the Saeima. I've started the politicians of one party already. I expanded one as an example Valērijs Agešins which proves to me everyone can be expanded. There are 100 deputies to only and they are red-linked. I think I will get them all started tomorrow. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:23, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:47, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The funny thing is that the guy who was causing the trouble at the village pump, you can count his edits since September 2007 on one page. He seems to have less than 500 edits to english wikipedia. I did more in one day in actually adding content than he seems to have every done since his time on here! I'm taking a breather today, will be back later tonight perhaps. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:33, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have one AWB task that needs doing. I need to add population, area and district capital to all of the districts of Vietnam using that Statoids site I mentioned above. What would make things much easier for me is if you could paste the following into all of the districts in preperation:

As of 2003 the district had a population of .<ref name="Statoids">{{cite web|url=http://www.statoids.com/yvn.html|title=Districts of Vietnam|publisher=Statoids|accessdate=March 13, 2009}}</ref> The district covers an area of km². The district capital lies at [[]].<ref name="Statoids"/> ==References== {{reflist}}

Tomorrow I'll try to start adding the data then, it should then take only 30 seconds or so to add it on each one. There shouldn't be any complaints in adding it as these articles are not exactly brimming with traffic and I'll try to add them as soon as I can. Buôn Đôn District has been done as an example. Just go through the subcategories of the Category:Districts of Vietnam if you can, but only do the ones that end in "district". Basically copy the section I'm referring to at here Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:31, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'll see what the reply is from Fritz first, I might be able to get a bot to do it. I can imagine that that would take time though, you're probably not here or up for it tonight anyway. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:26, 13 March 2009 (UTC) If I can find images of the districts on vietnam websites I may be able to work it out and make district maps for all like I've done with Bảo Lâm District, Lam Dong. Sound good? Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:26, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I;ve expanded a few of those Lithuanian painters. Trouble is I gather tha category is "Lithuanian artists" not Lithuanian painters. A lot of the articles are on graphic artists, sculptors as well as painters. I've expanded about 5 so far and its literally a minute or two to add something. They seem notable enough to me, Kęstutis Antanėlis etc. I must say thought I'm pretty disappointed by people's response towards them. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:30, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've asked Fritz anyway to see if he can use his bot to not only add that (with the data in) but the infboxes too. Thanks anyway. Nothing AWB at the mo although sometime I would greatly appreciate somebody copying and pasting the "xa" communes of each district into the articles. My internet connection currently freezes when I access Vietnamese wiki. Its just soon enough I will be wanting to start them and I will need to copy and paste the names into the existing provincial templates. Perhaps you could help me with that gradually, as of course I'd be doing a province at a time so it would mean you copying and pasting from around 10 articles max each time so it would be nothing extreme in one go! When I've sorted the district I will want to begin expanding them and adding the communes. What would be useful then actually is if you can copy and paste from Vietnamese wikipedia into the article and then I can use google translate and sort it out. It should only take a few minutes of your time. But I'll be pretty busy the next fewe days with the districts. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:18, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

How about one example for now so you fully understand what I mean. An Phú District. Can you visit the Vietnamese verson, copy and paste the whole page and save it into the talk page of An Phú District for me? Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:23, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thats perfect thanks! I will being translating that one now. It will be a few days though before I can get a chance to work through each province properly, quite easily in a month or two we will have all of these articles up to a half decent level of content. That system of translating from the talk page would work perfectly for me. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:29, 14 March 2009 (UTC) You can do as many as you feel like, they all need to be copied eventually and I can't see the harm in the content sitting in the tlak page as long as the note is there. Probably best to work as I do with the Category:Vietnam district templates. If you can copy and paste the Vietnam wiki article equivalent into all the talk pages and perhaps add a note "To be translated": then I can get to it as soon as I can. The articles will be looking miles better once the content is added and of course the big ugly tag removed which bloats the article. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:40, 14 March 2009 (UTC) Something a little more like An Phú District? If we could get all the districts up to this level this would be good, we both know that all the articles "should" be up to this sort of level. I doubt I'll have time to do every one fully but it is definately worth doing it even if to obtain the basics facts and communes! Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:24, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The idea then is that I start all 9000 or so communes like Khánh Bình. Wish I could find the source of the population data for communes though. You see I managed to build the red links in the Ca Mau template by retrieving the communes from Vietnam wiki. However around two weeks agomy computer just seemed to not accept Vietnam wiki and would crash, evne when I tried to translate via google. So if you could paste the articles in the talk pages I can get them, no computer hassle! So the ultimate goals for Vietnam is to get all these districts up to a mininum and then build all the provincial templates up with all the communes like Ca Mau and get them started. I anticipate I'll be starting the communes steadily this summer that will be my main project, along with my usual African places and transwikiying from funny languages of course! Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:40, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Let me know when you've copied some more text from viet wiki into the talk pages. Its just I'm working on the Mekong Region at present and as I add the data it makes sense to at least add the communes at the same time even if fuller translation comes later. If you can start with Template:Districts of Mekong Delta I can gradually work my way through it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:17, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

That works for me. Thanks. Adding the text from a province at a time seems in sensible chunks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well basically all the maps down to the commune maps can be seen here at this census website. I had a gmail chat with DHN which I can forward with some details on how to coordinate the bot. The commune stats are definitely there, area and popn for each commune - unfortunately not already in a table format. Genghiskhan (talk · contribs) likes to create lots of articles on geog settlements on vi.wiki (he usually doesn't bother logging in there, but most of the geo articles on vi are by him) and he can write English as well although he spends less time here nowadays. • me: do you know where all the population data for the communes used on vi.wiki comes from
  • DHN: not sure

10:48 AM if you want an authorative source, use the gov't website

 the gis application
  • me: that interactive map doesn't seem to have commune level stats
 does it
it isn't working for me atm
  • DHN: last time I checked it does

10:49 AM me: can you look at it for me

it basically doesn't work on mine
 takes ages anyway
  • DHN: seems really slow

10:51 AM see the "lop truy cap" dropdown box?

 choose Phuong/Xa

10:52 AM seems to work fine

it highlights the commune in the province and provide demographic info
 choose a province first
  • 10:56 AM me: did that
set it to phuong but I get the pictures of districts
  • 10:57 AM DHN: click somewhere in the map
  • 10:58 AM me: with the "i" choice?
 mode
  • DHN: yes
  • 10:59 AM me: it works now
  • DHN: when I select Phuong/xa mode, I see each commune colored differently in the map
me: wonder why it didnt last onth
all the data in a list
  • DHN: dont' think so, seems to be just an installer for the Java VM

11:05 AM you can also use the search function to find all the communes without having to click on each on the map 11:06 AM if you leave it blank it'll list all the communes 11:08 AM me: oh ok

I still have to click on all of them 1 by 1 though
  • DHN: yeah

11:09 AM me: it's still faster though

  • DHN: you can get someone to write a screenscraper to get all the info into a data file
maybe if I spend some time on it I might be able to do it

11:10 AM but it'll be faster if you can find a perl coder to help you

 and then it does?
  • DHN: no

11:26 AM only some numbers work

that's why if you write a perl program to do that, you'd be able to parse all the info in no time
  • 11:29 AM me: do you mind if I pass this discussion on to Blofeld and his bot consultant?
  • DHN: yeah

11:30 AM go ahead

  • me: on wiki?
I can cut the real name if you want
  • DHN: go ahead
me: ok
  • DHN: PROVINCENAME is the name of the province in lowercase, with no space

11:31 AM example of a correct page: http://gis.chinhphu.vn/MoreInformation.asp?pLayerId=angiang_pxa&pObjectId=2846

all the pages have the same format
just need to parse each field

11:33 AM but you can't just use any number. If the number doesn't work, it will give you a different type of page. We just ignore those pages.

So by going into phuong/xa mode, and by searching with a blank, it will list all the communes and you can go trhough and click to expand each of them without moving the map, which is really slow. However, DHN thinks a computer can autoextract them somehow. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:12, 16 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Zuniga at the HIrschhorn

Your image of a Zuniga sculpture is likely to be removed for the same reason my earlier one (still visible at Flickr) was: it was taken in the USA, and under US law photos of 3d artworks are considered derivative works and are still considered copyrighted by the original artist. We need a photo taken in another country such as England where photos of public artworks are considered the copyright only of the photographer. See Wikipedia:Freedom of panorama. —David Eppstein (talk) 01:42, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

By the way, on a subject that is unrelated except possibly in terms of the frustrating aspects of trying to add content to Wikipedia, your too-speedily-deleted article on Aleksandr Dulichenko exists once more. I would hope there's enough there by now to stave off another speedy deletion but you never can tell... —David Eppstein (talk) 05:07, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
