Request for help with Wadewitz-Wollstonecraft editathon (London, Saturday 31 May)

I could use some guidance and encouragement. I have a great venue (literally the Mary Wollstonecraft room) but am unsure how best to publicise this editathon. It just seemed wrong that Britain had not a single event for this scholar of British literature. And the Wadewitz memorial page said the events would all be in May. So I've whipped this together for the last day of the month. How can I best get the word out, on Wikipedia and elsewhere? I wrote the "official" (I guess) page for Wikimedia here, and I've listed it at Wikipedia:Wadewitz Tribute Edit-a-thons, but that doesn't feel like nearly enough. No one has signed up yet. Help! Hi Carbon. You can have an even whenever you want, the community and the academics Adrianne worked with (including me) wanted to have a condensed time period, which makes it easier to promote to the press and public. Anyway, you can find tips on how to promote your event here. I created that list, and it has all the tips I'd be telling you here :) A geonotice and letting people who edit locally know about it is a good idea.I also suggest you connect with Wikimedia UK (see the last link, you can find them that way) and let them know, they'll help you promote it and can perhaps even provide you swag to give away. Great job at putting things together and I know it's appreciated by many! Thank you for your swift response. I did see that list and am trying to work through it. If you know anyone who'd like to help me at a distance, that would be fantastic. (I know you're busy, but maybe you know of a keen unaffiliated person who wants to do her bit for Adrianne? Or anyone in Britain who, like me, felt a bit ashamed no one here had stepped up?) Specifically, I can't see how to list my event in the sidebar here of London meetups, nor at the Wikipedia:Meetup#Scheduled_future_meetups section. I'd reach out to local UK Wikimedians such as User:Daria Cybulska (WMUK) and User:Johnbod. I know we're all busy, but, they are locals and also involved in the chapter, they can probably provide the best spread the word boots on the ground insight for getting folks who can attend involved. Btw I added to both event pages. For future reference you just click the +/- symbols, click edit, copy and paste other's test and replace it with yours in the correct section. Anyone can edit the Wikimedia UK events page (link at left of their main page to https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Events). You want to do a Geonotice for southern England, and notify the UK email list: "Send Wikimediauk-l mailing list submissions to wikimediauk-l@lists.wikimedia.org ". There is nothing in London on that day but both the weekends before and after have big events on Saturday and Sunday, and I'm having one as well on the 7th, so I don't know I'll come. I'd talk to Jonathan Cardy or Daria at WMUK too. Events like this don't usually go on the meetups page I think. Johnbod (talk) 16:26, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you Jon. I've just managed to submit a geonotice request [[1]]; I did it for London but shall change it on your advice. Would you possibly be able to submit the event to the email list? I don't think I'm on it or have ever had anything to do with it. The geonotice text should suffice. Thanks also for pointing out the other London events; I felt somewhat time-constrained on this, and entirely understand that you are unlikely to come. Same difference for Geonotice - it isn't that precise & everybody up to about Derby sees "London" I believe. You can just email that address for the UK list AFAIK & it will come better from you. I can confirm when I see it. Johnbod (talk) 16:59, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

I am going to create a listserv soon, but in the meantime, my presentation about the problems I see the group engaging are at at the conference page and I have created a Google form at here that will help me get an initial sense of who would be interested in helping build Humanities/Wikipedia activities. I was happy to hear the positive feedback to the need to be responsive to the COI editors who are using the request edit template. I do not view the current backlog as a crisis; however, I think our approach could be improved, which will serve us well if the volume of requests grows. My main reason for wanting to get involved is that I support the notion that COI editors should not be directly editing articles. However, if we as a community want to impose that restriction, we have an obligation to be responsive to people who do observe a problem with an article, and want to respect our restrictions. We do have a working process, but I'd like to see if we can improve it, both in terms of the timing of responses and the quality of responses.

As is often the case, a collaborative discussion among interested editors is an effective way to identify ways to improve the process. My first challenge is that there is no easy way to identify the community of editors who are responding. I figured out that I can look at the completed edit templates, and check to see who edited each entry, but that is a time-consuming way to identify contributors. Once identified, there is no central place to discuss issues.

That is in the process of changing. CorporateM started this page, which looks like a great start. I've also reached out to Hasteur to start thinking about how to improve our process. He was very responsive, but I put that on brief hold, partly because of the New York conference.

I plan to pull my thoughts together on how the process should work, but I know it will be better if several people are involved. I'm going to look into creating a WikiTask Force, sort of a lightweight version of a Wikiproject, but we can consider a more formal Wikiproject if that seems appropriate. --S Philbrick(Talk) 19:36, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

... this edit. I still have this idea that someday I'm going to sit down and clean up the article and nominate it for FA again and get it to pass and run on the front page on her birthday (this year actually wouldn't be a bad one, as it would be her 65th). But I do so much more now than I did back in 2006 when I wrote the basics of the article that I can barely keep up with all the newsy tidbits well-meaning editors add. I would appreciate it greatly if you would take time to read the inclusion criteria of the category, and the sources that are provided on the talk page, which detail that reliable sources specifically study this sort of sex-selective massacres (of both men, and women). You're a valued editor and I value your opinion, but your !vote suggests to me that you didn't review those materials in advance, and it would be a great favor to me if you would consider doing so (Bearcat, for example, has moved his vote to "no opinion" pending review of the same materials).
