Mistaken percentage of women's biographies

edit

Hi Samantha and thanks for the useful work you are doing to publicize the gender gap on Wikipedia. I see that according to this article in the Minnesota Daily, you gave the percentage of women's biographies on Wikipedia as just 16%. While the percentage is indeed far too low, it has now risen to over 17%. This difference is extremely important to those of us working on Wikipedia:Women in Red where we are doing all we can to increase the coverage of women and their works. You can access the correct data on WHGI which monitors the percentage of women's biographies which are coded human and female on Wikidata. As of 16 October 2017, 255,667 or 17.12% of our 1,492,988 biographies in the English Wikipedia were on women. Katherine Maher made the same mistake in an article recently published in Forbes. As a specialict in communications, perhaps you could make sure our efforts are taken into account in future presentations by WMF. I am copying this to Megalibrarygirl, Rosiestep and Victuallers who are active on Women in Red.--Ipigott (talk) 08:22, 21 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Ipigott:, Megalibrarygirl, Rosiestep, and Victuallers. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I will update the statistics we use in public communications with the new percentage of biographies about women on English Wikipedia. I'll also reach out to the Minnesota Daily reporter to clarify the correct number. As always, thank you for the work you do to keep this number growing. SLien (WMF) (talk) 19:02, 6 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Also, the resource you pointed me to is fantastic. I'll continue to monitor this as the number continues to grow over time. SLien (WMF) (talk) 19:13, 6 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad to hear you finally picked this up, Samantha. Is there a more efficient way we can communicate with you? You have probably seen that Jimmy Wales has also been supporting Women in Red - see Wikipedia's community is 85% male, and founder Jimmy Wales isn't sure how to fix it. You should be working together on this. And don't forget our World Contest which is running on the EN wiki until the end of November.--Ipigott (talk) 19:23, 6 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Ipigott: While we don't work with Jimmy on every Wikipedia-related speaking opportunity or media interview, (as I'm sure you can imagine, there are many!), we do share updated information with him from time to time about topics that often come up when speaking about Wikipedia publicly. In keeping with this, we are reaching out to Jimmy and Katherine to let them know about the updated number of biographies about women on English Wikipedia. In the future, please feel free to reach out on my talk page here or by emailing communications@wikimedia.org, and myself or one of my colleagues will aim to get back to you in a timely manner. It's been a busy couple of weeks for the Communications team, thanks for your patience. SLien (WMF) (talk) 18:24, 22 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Glad to see you are keeping in touch, Samantha. Our World Contest, which you should view, is providing unexpectedly positive results in world coverage of women on the EN wiki. We are already up to 17.22% women's biographies and we still have eight days to go. I'll keep you posted. (cc Rosiestep, Dr. Blofeld). --Ipigott (talk) 19:38, 22 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
