- The mobile beta mode will be disabled to have less maintenance. The developers will focus on the desktop improvements project. You can turn on advanced mobile contributions mode if you want to see the categories. You could also jump back to the top. This can instead be done with a gadget or user script. [1]
- Parsoid is software we use for the visual editor, content translation, Flow and the Android app. This has been rewritten. It will come to the wikis gradually over the next two weeks. It has been tested, but there could be some diffs or previews that don't look right. If you see any you can report them. [2]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 November. It will be on the other wikis next week (calendar). This is because of holidays.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 27 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.

- An RfC on the administrator resysop criteria was closed. 18 proposals have been summarised with a variety of supported and opposed statements. The inactivity grace period within which a new request for adminship is not required has been reduced from three years to two. Additionally, Bureaucrats are permitted to use their discretion when returning administrator rights.
- Following a proposal, the edit filter mailing list has been opened up to users with the Edit Filter Helper right.
- Wikimedia projects can set a default block length for users via MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry. A new page, MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry-ip, allows the setting of a different default block length for IP editors. Neither is currently used. (T219126)

Lutheran Indian Ministries
Thank you for your detailed message on my talk page about Draft:Lutheran Indian Ministries. Third party sources are #6, #7, #9, #13 #17, #18, #19, #20. Although #9 is a religious media outlet, it is either a different denomination or a "general Protestant" kind of thing. It is not a church-run media outlet related to Lutheran Indian Ministries. The most in-depth coverage would be from #7, #9, and #13.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 18:41, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- Please pick out the three best for me to review. Also, links would help, since reference numbers change over time, so it's hard to be sure I'm looking at the right ones -- RoySmith (talk) 21:02, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- Reference #7: http://www.sitnews.us/0409news/042509/042509_mv_christian.html (Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots, mentioned in the article, is the former name (or still a current alternative name) of Lutheran Indian Ministries)... the news service is secular, see http://www.sitnews.us to verify its credibility
- Reference #9: http://www.virtueinthewasteland.com/episodes/2016/9/21/episode-128-missions-to-hawaiians-and-native-americans-with-clarence-de-lude-iii-and-tim-norton
- Reference #18: https://www.mitchelladvocate.com/2016/09/02/mission-trip-to-weagamow-lake-first-nation-a-welcome-visit-for-locals/wcm/0cae0aad-1eed-2311-464f-d82c5a6f75b7 , note it uses the alternative name of Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots, (LAMP)--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 00:03, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for listing those. I've responded on the draft. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:27, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
- Just so you know, I am not a member of a church or denomination affiliated with LIM/LAMP. Rather, this has been a red link on wikipedia for many years. I discovered the draft article by chance and remembered the red link(s). I believe this article was created well after the red-link(s) by someone who may not have even been aware of them.
- I double checked https://www.mitchelladvocate.com/2016/09/02/mission-trip-to-weagamow-lake-first-nation-a-welcome-visit-for-locals/wcm/0cae0aad-1eed-2311-464f-d82c5a6f75b7 , and the link is working fine right now (I am using Chrome, on a desktop). You need to exit out of the pop-up on the bottom, though if you have an ad blocker on. Perhaps you are using some sort of blocker?
- Since the podcast was too long, I suggest substituting source 17 https://www.mitchelladvocate.com/2014/08/25/mission-trip-to-northern-ontario-rewarding/wcm/e0b4f1b1-627e-0df9-10fc-d1b5939e80ad instead. Since it is also from the Mitchel Advocate, let me know if you can't open it.
- As for the one about the MV Christian, that a part of of LIM/LAMP operations. The ship is owned by them and used for their operations. A newspaper doesn't have to be encyclopedic in tone for it to be reliable source.
- I removed promotional stuff in the article some time back that had been put in by a previous editor. If there is still some left, please tag individual items for me or leave a comment on the talk page. In short by now you can see I am asking you to review the article further.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 03:33, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
- Perhaps this is a better source. Please use this one in place of the dead link.

Dictionary of Luther and the Lutheran Traditions, edited by Timothy J. Wengert, 2017 Baker Academic https://books.google.com/books?id=i9HlDQAAQBAJ&pg=PT582#v=onepage&q&f=false
Taking to the air rather than the airwaves, by 1970 the Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots (LAMP) was serving Lutherans in remote areas of northwestern Canada. Led by Pastor Les Stalke, LAMP recruited "lay mssionairies" to relocate to northern regions and witness the Lutheran faith. In time, LAMP greatly expanded its fleet of airplanes and missionary pilots to transport material assistance, vacation Bible school volunteers, and longer-term volunteers-in-ministry to assist and evangelize native peoples... <entry continues with two sentences dealing with nomenclature of the organization and rights to the name>
- The reliance on small-town newspapers may be due to the lack of larger cities in northwestern Canada. Small towns are the largest communities there are except for Yellowknife, which is considered a city with a population of 19,569.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 03:54, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
- As I mention in WP:THREE, I'm willing to look at the three best sources, not more. But, since one of the sources you mentioned (www.mitchelladvocate.com) was unavailable due to some technical problem (It's visible now), I took another look at that. It's a local-interest article that's only peripherally about the Ministry. It also appears in a local newspaper ("The Mitchell Advocate is the weekly newspaper in the municipality of West Perth, Ontario") in a town that's under 9000 poplulation. This is exactly what the WP:AUD section is getting at. Local coverage like this isn't enough. I'm sorry, but I think you need to accept that this isn't going anywhere. -- RoySmith (talk) 04:01, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
- Yet another third party, in depth source would be Expert Witnesses: Intellectual Property Cases, pages 116-119, which details a legal dispute between the Canadian and United States LAMP organizations. It is published by Michael G. Atkins, Thomson West, 2009--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 04:18, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, as I said above, I'm unwilling to invest any more time in reviewing this. -- RoySmith (talk) 04:21, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
- Yet another in-depth, third party source: https://thestarphoenix.com/entertainment/local-arts/lamp-ministry , also not in the article. Saskatoon has a population of 273,010, so it is not small town.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 04:27, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
Hi! You have closed the DRV for this as no consensus, which endorses a deletion of the article, but the history is still there. Regards, Jovanmilic97 (talk) 09:34, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Jovanmilic97: ooops, my bad. Thanks for the heads up. Also, thanks to User:sgeureka who I see has already fixed the problem. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:12, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

Userbox DRV Closure
This is about https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review#User:Queerly_Bohemian/Userboxes/FreedomFighters_(closed) or https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2019_December_23 . I agree with your close. I want to comment on one comment. It was said that there is a higher acceptance of non-admin closures at MFD than at AFD. I am not a regular at AFD, and so wouldn't know, but I don't have a high acceptance of non-admin closures at MFD. My own thinking is that I haven't seen a tradition of non-administrators who stay out of the way of discussions at MFD so as to be uninvolved and then do the close. I think that this was a case of the non-admin closer either trying to establish a new tradition of acceptance of non-admin closures, or of setting up a record for RFA. However, I thought that the appellant was being tendentious, and was looking to see if the case was still open so as to make a request to the closer to admonish the appellant. What the appellant was saying was that they had made a particular policy argument, and that the closer was supposed to decide that their policy argument trumped all of the other policy arguments, and so cast a supervote. Oh well. It's closed, and I agree with your closure, which affirms the right close by the wrong closer. I don't think that the non-admin closer needed to be warned, but the appellant will probably get warned at some point. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:17, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Robert, thanks for your note. My comment about NAC at MfD was only intended to summarize what what said in the discussion, not necessarily to accept it as fact. Draftification: what am I not seeing?
Hi RoySmith, put me down as stupid, but I've always been under the impression that draftification involved two steps; undeletion, and then moving. Is there a one-step solution I've just not known of? Vanamonde (Talk) 21:32, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah, just move the page without deleting it. A lot of people use User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to automate the process, but it doesn't do anything that couldn't be done by just moving the page and following up with a bit of manual cleanup. As for being stupid, don't worry about it. I guarantee I've got "stupid" stories that can beat yours. -- RoySmith (talk) 21:39, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hmm. Even with that script, when I look at a deleted page (either the "create" link or the "view/restore" link) I just don't have a "move" button. Is this not supposed to be the case? Vanamonde (Talk) 21:52, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- You have to do it to a page that's not deleted. For example, I just created User:RoySmith/test, then I moved it to Draft:RoySmith/test. Yes, sometimes draftifications are done coupled with undeletions. For example, a page might get deleted at AfD, brought to DRV, where the consensus is to draftify. What happens then is you undelete the page, then move it (either manually like I did in the example, or with some fancy javascript tool). As far as I know, there's no way to actually rename a page while it's deleted. But, I could be wrong on that :-) -- RoySmith (talk) 22:03, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Yes, that's what I've always done, and how I thought it worked. What I was referring to at ARBCOM was that requests for draftification or userfication often happen after deletion. Not AfD's being closed as "draftify", but A7 deletions being restored to draftspace. I'll add a clarification there. Vanamonde (Talk) 22:06, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

- Hmm. Even with that script, when I look at a deleted page (either the "create" link or the "view/restore" link) I just don't have a "move" button. Is this not supposed to be the case? Vanamonde (Talk) 21:52, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
A cup of coffee for you!
"I feel obligated to point out that just plugging in numbers without knowing what you're doing is not a good way to generate reliable data." (here) - I cracked up reading that line, I've worked with plenty of data scientists who could use that reminder. Redirect
Hi. Question. Given the deletion review close on Pache at https://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2020_January_2&diff=prev&oldid=934968250, should the Pache portion of Atlanta Braves minor league players, which was created as part of his now reverted redirect, be deleted? Thanks. --2604:2000:E010:1100:B529:B15C:D8AB:B079 (talk) 17:44, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
- That really is a content issue. I'll leave it up to you and your fellow editors to sort out on the talk pages, or perhaps just being WP:BOLD. -- RoySmith (talk) 17:46, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
REC-90
Pardon the interruption. I just added an "ambiguation" link from E0 to an article you originated; REC-90. Now I'm having potential misgivings, since, while REC-90 is always E0, E0 is not always REC-90. Of course, there is no Ethanol-free article, itself. Part of me is tempted to even originate such an article, although I've never done so, yet.
Before I proceed headlong, (in any direction) I wanted to get your opinion. Thank you. — BoringJim (talk) 03:43, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- @BoringJim: Hmmm, that was a long time ago. I barely even remember writing that article. I don't see any problem with your E0 link. It would be better if the REC-90 article actually mentioned E0 in the body of the article, however. I think your plan to write an article about ethanol-free gasoline makes sense. As an aside, a few years ago, I started using pre-mixed ethanol-free gas in a small outboard motor I have. It's absurdly expensive, but I only go through about a gallon a year, so it almost doesn't matter what it costs. And, my outboard used to spend more time in the shop than on my boat. Since I've started using the ethanol-free gas, I've never had a single problem. You might want to mention this kind of fuel in your article. -- RoySmith (talk) 04:08, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Kazemita1
I'm reluctant to archive Kazemita1's SPI with no further action. I don't feel the sole issue was the damage to People's Mujahedin of Iran, but more importantly Kazemita1's block evasion which hasn't been addressed. Cheers, Cabayi (talk) 13:45, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Cabayi: OK, I see your point. I'll take another look. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:47, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hi RoySmith, I wrote this on Kazemita1's Talk page but it was removed by the user. It seems that using different IPs that wouldn't be traced back to him was premeditated per his own unblock request: "lack of proper SPI investigation to at least relate these IPs to me." (this has now been removed by the user from his unblock request). Alex-h (talk) 13:25, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
- Per accountability, could you join the discussion at User talk:Kazemita1, particularly regarding your revocation of talk page access? Many thanks. ——SN54129 15:24, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser use very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It can lead to downgrade attacks. Since 9 December you just see a warning. Soon the browser will not connect to the wikis at all. Most are users on Android systems older than 4.4. You can read the browser recommendations. [19]
- Special:LinkSearch has been moved from the "Redirecting special pages" section on Special:SpecialPages to the "Lists of pages" section. [20]
Changes later this week
- Wikis can protect pages so that only some users can edit them. The standard protection levels are Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access and Require administrator access. If your wiki use more protection levels the technical name might be renamed for standardisation. This doesn't affect what users see. [21]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 January. It will be on all wikis from 16 January (calendar).
Future changes
- Deepcat and Catgraph will stop working. This will happen at the end of January. This is because you can now use the normal search function instead. [22]
- You can use
<ref follow="…">
to merge footnotes that follow each other. It is meant to be used for digitised books on Wikisource. If the order of the footnotes is wrong no error was shown but the bad <ref> was shown outside the <references /> list. This will change and you will see an error message instead. [23]

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 January. It will be on all wikis from 23 January (calendar).
Future changes
- There is a new suggestion for what to show when someone edits without registering an account. This is to give unregistered editors better privacy and make some anti-vandalism work go faster. You can give feedback.
- Pywikibot is a Python library to automate work on wikis. It will no longer support Python 2. Use the
python2
tag if you need to continue running Python 2 scripts. The Pywikibot team strongly recommends to migrate to Python 3. You can get help to do so. [24] - The weekly MediaWiki branch cut will soon become automated. The timing for this cut may change. You can discuss in Phabricator if this affects you. [25]
- You can read about coming technical events and mentoring interns.
