DW Stadium

"There are two claims that have been added to the article in the past week, neither of which are verified nor attributed to any source. I have attempted to tag these appropriately, but it keeps being removed in place of weasel words. Repeated reversion of an article between two editors is known as an edit war, and is never allowed under any circumstances. When two editors are warring, as would be the case if the reverting were to continue, then consensus should be sought on its talk page. Failure to resolve difference through this medium will result in third party intervention.

The two claims in question are: [edit] Reference to 'Boston'

The rugby league club were granted the East Stand, which they renamed 'The Boston Stand' in tribute to the Welsh winger Billy Boston, although Wigan Athletic fans jokingly claim the name derives from Boston United whose failure to achieve promotion to the Football League in 1978 led to the inclusion of the Wigan club.

A source has been linked to the claim which confirms Wigan Athletic did indeed take Boston United FC's place in the Football League. This was never in question. What I questioned was whether Wigan Athletic fans really do jokingly refer to 'Boston' in this way. A simple Google search produces not so much as a newspaper article or a blog to support this statement. GW(talk) 22:27, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

I'd say if it's not sourced, get rid of it per WP:V. It's not particularly encyclopedic anyway. Nev1 (talk) 22:47, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

I agree. I am unconvinced that this is really encyclopedic anyway, obviously something such as this would have to be sourced if it were to remain. Surely if the fans made a big deal of this there would be some mention of it somewhere. Rje (talk) 13:45, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Harry Lyon (fans choice)

As Wigan Athletic had spent many years in the lower leagues it was recognised that most of the players were not known at national level and as the fans' choice, Harry Lyon, had already been honoured at the site of their former home, Springfield Park, the ground's main West Stand was renamed 'The Springfield Stand', in recognition of the club's original base.

Firstly, recognised by whom? Wikipedia demands that all claims be linked to reliable sources. To claim that something has been recognised without actually saying who it has been recognised by implies authority and thus violates this guideline.

Secondly, no source has been linked to the claim that Wigan Athletic fans were given a poll to decide on their player, or that Harry Lyon was voted, or that he was overlooked in favour of Springfield Park because he has already been honoured. Again, a simple Google search produces no results to confirm any of these claims and inferences. GW(talk) 22:27, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

You're right about having a source for the claim of recognition. It would seem odd to me that the club would go against the wishes of the fans on something like this and for there to be no mention of it in a reliable source. The fact that the Springfield Stand is named after the old stadium should remain, but the rest should go if there isn't a source for it. Rje (talk) 13:45, 29 October 2009 (UTC)"

Rje, with all due respect, I don't think you have any link to Wigan or the sporting clubs therin and therefore do not understand the mentality of supporters of both clubs. Think fans of Liverpool and Manchester United: they are not the best of friends. Although from different sports, you have the same situation in Wigan with Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors with the supporters of one team undermining the other at every opportunity. You will never be rid of an edit war. Ginger Warrior by his username is a supporter of Wigan Warriors and will no doubt call to question anything that views Wigan Athletic in a more favourable light, gives them more Wikispace than the rugby club or indeed pokes fun. Please bear this in mind. I refer to his comment as proof of this: 'A source has been linked to the claim which confirms Wigan Athletic did indeed take Boston United FC's place in the Football League. This was never in question. What I questioned was whether Wigan Athletic fans really do jokingly refer to 'Boston' in this way. A simple Google search produces not so much as a newspaper article or a blog to support this statement. GW(talk) 22:27, 28 October 2009 (UTC)' You could flip the point between opposing fans forever and a day, but this will be seen as a detrimental comment by the rugby fraternity while being made frequently by football fans verbally and on messageboards. Do some research rather than relying on the limitations of Google.

The comment 'It would seem odd to me that the club would go against the wishes of the fans' is laughable as the owner of Wigan Athletic makes all the decisions, the fans don't get a say and never have had one. This is the official statement from the club: [1] which reads like there had been numerous discussions which is complete rubbish. Mr Whelan had the campaign brought to his attention by local journalist, Paul Kendrick (Wigan Observer) and made the decision to rename days later. Also the Latics representative Mike Taylor was unknown to the majority of Wigan Athletic fans. This is where the renaming campaign began and this is a fact!: [2]. The fans wanted The Springfield Park Stand only to be given The Springfield Stand. If you follow the link, click the 'Springfield Park Stand' link at the top right of the page where you can follow the campaign in its entirity. Unfortunately most of Springfied Park's history was in the time before the internet so nearly all the references are on fansites such as the Springfield Park Memorial. This has been researched over a period of 15 years through newspaper articles and the few publications available by a number of people and is the nearest thing you will find to a history of the ground. I hope this clears up the situation —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.96.25.77 (talk) 13:05, 31 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

You appear to have misunderstood me. I do not consider the specific banter between rival fans to be especially noteworthy. Unless such exchanges are picked up by a wider audience, I do not think they are worth noting in an article. I honestly do not consider message boards to be a reliable source.
You quoted me out of context on the second point. I did not question the fact that the stand was named after Springfield Park, merely that it would be odd for there to be no record of a poll of supporters. All information on Wikipedia should be backed by verifiable, reliable sources. This is the primary concern of both myself and Ginger Warrior on this point. This article was tagged as an unreferenced BLP. I'm working my way through the unreferenced BLPs in the Children's Literature Project, referencing those I can and PRODing those which don't meet Wikipedia's criteria (with discussion within the project). Peter Härtling appears to meet Wikipedia's notability criteria but my knowledge of the German language and German literature is not sufficient to be able to deal with getting this article referenced properly. I've added one reference (to the author's website) but this is really not enough. I'm mentioning it to you in case you feel like helping. --Plad2 (talk) 21:49, 6 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Gregory Clark (designer) deletion

edit

Personally, I agree. An article that consists of nothing but an infobox is a complete waste and should be deleted. Unfortunately, consensus is not on the side of logic and reason in this particular case. I took a beating at my second RFA for this nom [3], even though an admin did end up deleting it. I'm not going to restore it or anything, I just thought you should be aware that such a deletion is not actually supported by the policy as currently worded, since context was established by said infobox. There was an AfD discussion about that article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Andrejs Siņicins. The consensus then was that the article did not meet Wikipedia's policy on notability. I deleted the recreation of the article as it contravened Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion G4, which allows for the speedy deletion of any article that is a recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion. This has nothing to do with whether Andrejs Siņicins is a real person, but whether he is considered notable by the definition outlined in Wikipedia's policies. Let me know if you have any questions. One World Trade Center

edit

Hello and thanks for your answer.

In fact, the building is offically known as One World Trade Center, 1 World Trade Center is it´s adress. Other buildings have an "One" as well at the beginning: for example One Prudential Plaza, One Liberty Plaza and much others. The buildings known as One World Trade Center by it´s developer (owner), the Port Authority: [4], the architect: [5] in the media: [6] & [7] and by secondary sources: [8] and here is listed, that 1 World Trade Center is only the adress. I think that should be enough. Regards, Jerchel (talk) 14:33, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your deletion of Talk:Dennis Willis

edit

Hi. I notice that you recently deleted this talk page connected to the article Dennis Willis under speedy deletion criteria G7, "Author Requests Deletion". However, G7 says:

...if requested in good faith and provided that the only substantial content to the page and to the associated talk page was added by its author.

I would interpret this to mean that the "only substantial content" criteria is to be judged by the contributions to both the article and the talk page. In this case, while User:DJWJR may well have been the only contributor to the article's talk page, that's not the case of the article itself, where myself and one other editor also contributed.

Considering this, I wonder if you would think about undoing the deletion. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:22, 8 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect deletion of DeNyse

edit

It was not a typo and just because it was a stub doesn't mean you can just go ahead and delete it!!! - Winner 42 (talk) 16:41, 19 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

The article I deleted was not a stub, it was a redirect to Denise (given name). The redirect was an orphan and anyone searching for DeNyse would automatically end up at the variant spelling Denyse, which would be more appropriate, it therefore seemed to me that the redirect was redundant. Your stub had been replaced by the time I deleted it, presumably instead of PRODing it. I can restore your version of the article, but you would have to provide sources that show why it is worthy of inclusion, otherwise it will be listed for deletion. Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information - we don't need articles about every surname in the world, especially where we don't have any articles relating to people with that surname. Rje deleted "Nuclear Microprobe"

edit

23:59, 1 August 2010 Rje (talk | contribs) deleted "Nuclear Microprobe" ‎ (G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement of http://icnmta.atomki.hu/)

Dear Rje,

I'm sorry for the Unambiguous copyright infringement, but I've created http://icnmta.atomki.hu/ too. I'm a member of the international copmmittee of the ICNMTA conference series. ICNMTA - International Conference on Nuclear Microprobe Technology and Applications, the 12th of the series was organized in Leipzig, Germany, and just finished a few days ago. The International Committee has decided to create wiki pages for the Nuclear Microprobe, which is a unique intstrument, you can see a list of such microprobes at e.g. <http://icnmta.atomki.hu/microprobefac.html>, and the list of all conferences here: <http://www.icnmta2010.de/?node=19>.

So, I meant to just create a page for the nuclear microprobe with the starter one paragraph (that you were right, I've copied from my previous page), but then ask a lot of people to join me improving it. We actually have a quite long table of content in mind, so this will be a good page, I believe.

I also added a minor correction to the existing "microprobe" wiki entry, especially because experts were invited since 2005 to improve the page... Since I'm an active scientist in the field, I suppose I would be an eligible person to do this.

So, I'll re-paste the paragraph now, and send a circular to all my colleagues in the field. This time please don't delete my page.

Many thanks.

BlooSee page removed

edit

Rje, looks like you removed the page I just authored about my company, BlooSee. I don't get it. No explanation was given about why that article didn't meet A7 requirements. It clearly explained the relevance of the company, what it does, how it enables Web users to geolocate information about the oceans. Wikipedia allows the pages for companies, including similar ones to BlooSee, like: CloudMade. We're a boot-strapped start-up trying to sprout a shoot in this world and to be shot down by wikipedia, that's supposed to be all about letting people share and receive knowledge freely, without the intermediation of a stogy publisher, really hurts. If there is something specific that was objectionable, I would be happy to change it. The article clearly said why BlooSee is significant and why its relevant to its users and how it operates, same as do other articles about companies. Please take a second look at the last version of the article and kindly restore it. I am myself a wikipedia contributor since 2004 and a friend of Jimmy Wales from back then. I have unfortunately been locked out of my old user profile "vlado" and had to create a new one to write about BlooSee, but you can see my past contributions going back to 2004 http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Special:Contributions/Vlado. I am Anya Selecki and in 1975-76, I played JaJa Gibson in Number 96 using the stage name Anya Saleky . At this time, I also appeared in the Paul Hogan’s and many other TV Shows.

Anya Saleky is referred to under Number 96 and the Paul Hogan Shows, but it links to a non existing page.

I have been writing a CV to create a page to provide more details on me (Anya Selecki/ stage name Saleky). Please let me know what would be the most appropriate way to do so in Wikipedia

Grammar/language stuff

edit

Hi there RJE, VASCO from Portugal here,

about my changes at Fernando Martínez Perales and Francisco Liaño, they were for the best - as your article creation indeed - and i'll explain now:

1 - I don't think that after the division in which a club plays has been determined in storyline, "LA LIGA" or "LIGUE 1" should be written again, etc, just write "finished third", not "finish third in La Liga".

2 - After a big part of storyline has been devoted to one particular club, no need to write "left DEPORTIVO with x official appearances", just "left the club..." or "left...".

3 - No need, in my humble opinion, to put full stops constantly and then write "He did this or that" again. Allow for some "freedom" with the commas, please.

4 - I think that stuff like BDFUTBOL.com belongs as external link not reference, as it is a mere site with stats.

Nothing more for the moment, whistle if you have any doubts, best wishes to you to and keep up the good work (and sorry for any incovenience) - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 00:10, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Hey thanks for the message, RJ, here's my (a bit late, only saw it now though) reply, "bit-by-bit" according to your text:

1 - Some folks might not know what "back" is, but EVERYBODY must surely know what "defender", and it's more often than not (although "back" is undoubtedly preferred) used in English language;

2 and 3 - I really do not understand where have i failed, but i'll try to rewrite the intro;

4 - Why is it not "elegant"? Because i omitted the word "team" and wrote just "local Levante UD", which is a team, thus making it implicit?

5 - I really think that both your way and mine are perfectly OK (i assure you that "helping X team promote" is 100% correct), but no worries, i'll write yours;

6 - OK, i'll write "he" all over the place, although i fail to see why, your grammatical explanation "won the prize" :);

7 - OK, we'll lose the 1/2 stuff;

8 and 9 - I'll rewrite those bits better. Cheers and keep up the good work - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 14:03, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Freedomland.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 03:48, 23 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I went to add a template to the article and saw "A page with this title has previously been deleted." I took the liberty of recreating the page by adding the templates. I hope that's okay. Thanks! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:35, 19 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

edit

  Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. –xenotalk 15:51, 1 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Notice of change

edit

Hello. You are receiving this message because of a recent change to the administrator policy that alters what you were told at the time of your desysopping. The effect of the change is that if you are inactive for a continuous three year period, you will be unable to request return of the administrative user right. This includes inactive time prior to your desysopping if you were desysopped for inactivity and inactive time prior to the change in policy. Inactivity is defined as the absence of edits or logged actions. Until such time as you have been inactive for three years, you may request return of the tools at the bureaucrats' noticeboard. After you have been inactive for three years, you may seek return of the tools only through WP:RFA. Thank you. MBisanz talk 00:20, 4 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Date movie.jpg

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Date movie.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The Anne Rice Award honors editors who have improved Wikipedia's coverage of women writers by creating a biography of a woman writer who, like Anne Rice, used a pen name, nom de plume, literary initials, or pseudonym on the title page or by-line of her works in place of her real name.
