WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive

Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!

TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.

If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.

At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.

As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

GA Cup

Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!

As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:

For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.

For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).

The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup

WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers.

Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition.

Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the four judges.

Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Wiki2.png

A tag has been placed on File:Wiki2.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone!

Star Wars (film)

Hi Mediran,

I'm Deadbeef from WP:GOCE and I've decided to take up copyediting Star Wars over the next few days to try to bring it up to GA or FA status. That said, it's a giant article; I'll be working primarily on copyediting and might need your help clarifying in certain points where the original text is confusing and I'm struggling to work it into solid prose. I've worked the lede so far (diff, if you want to take a look). As you can see, I've put one {{clarify}} tag on the following: It was selected to become part of the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in its first year of opening, becoming the most immediate addition at the time, as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." I don't really get what that means, and I don't have too much free time to try digging through sources to make sense of it. If you could, please try to make it a bit more obvious what that sentence is going for.

I'll come back to this section with any concerns I have and will maintain a dialogue with you here in regards to improving it. Given your volume of edits to the page, I'll assume you're alright with that. I'll watch your talk page so unless you feel like you need to talk somewhere else, or there's some other development with the page, or if I'm being unresponsive, we can keep the conversation here. Thanks for bringing the article to GOCE's attention; let's make the sucker a FA again. Deadbeef 06:51, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

@Deadbeef: I'm very sorry for replying so late. Anyway, thank you so much for taking the article. Yes, it deserves a featured status. And about that one that seems unclear... It tells that Star Wars was the youngest "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" film selected by the LOC to be part of the Registry with no other film from the 1970s to be picked. This was in 1989, the first year of the Registry. Well, you can remove that part in the lead if you think it's too trivial. Hope this helps — Mediran [talk] 03:53, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
No worries. Anyways, I've tagged the Writing section with a couple of {{clarify}} tags; the first is on a sentence clause which is a confusing to someone who doesn't know much about film-production (i.e. me). In the second, please let me know (or edit yourself) what is meant by 'treatment'. I've also fixed my previous concern with your clarification. Thanks, Deadbeef 02:41, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
Also, in the Footnotes section, this is a bit ambiguous (didn't feel like tagging): 20th Century Fox will continue to control their interest to the first film for the foreseeable future. Please clarify what "interest" they will control. This is also not referenced in the source given; a new one will be needed. Deadbeef 03:49, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
There also seems to be the problem that Lucasfilm is given no context in the article. I was surprised to see it mentioned for the first time in the Premiere and initial release section: Lucasfilm hired Charles Lippincott as marketing director for Star Wars. As someone who isn't particularly familiar with the behind-the-scenes of the film beyond what I've read in the article, I'm confused as to what Lucasfilm is. Please add context. Sorry to turn this into a laundry list, but it is what it is. Deadbeef 05:01, 25 December 2014 (UTC)

Done! Just finished copyediting the last section. I can see you're still plugging away at the article; I'll stick around and help the article any way I see I can. I know you're working on it but don't forget to tick off the problems upthread. When you think it's ready for GAN let me know and I'll nominate it or give it my blessing; I think it's nearly there but I may want to run some last second tweaks before we send it. I have no intention of going anywhere until the thing is a FA, so don't be afraid to ping me about stuff about it (I may unwatch your talk page after a bit, though). Deadbeef 05:47, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

@Deadbeef: Yes, thank you so much Deadbeef. The article is not yet really complete because it still needs information about the costume, props and the miniatures used in the production. The soundtrack section also is missing some parts. I'll work on those later. I hope to get this an FA very soon. Of course with your help. Thanks — Mediran [talk] 09:57, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Huggle message

Hey Mediran! You are receiving this message because you are subscribed at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers

I have recently launched a new downloads for beta testers that contains nightly builds of huggle, eg. versions that are built every day from our master branch and contains latest huggle. These builds are currently provided only for Windows and Ubuntu. You can find them here: http://huggle.wmflabs.org/builds/

Please keep in mind that these don't have any automatic updates and if you download and start using nightly build, you will need to update it yourself! So don't get yourself to running old version, it's possible to install both stable and nightly huggle, which is what I suggest.

Keep the bug reports coming to phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?projects=Huggle Many thanks! Petrb (talk) 09:52, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Greetings

Seeking advice on conflict resolution. Are you still active in conflict resolution? I saw that you were listed as part of a project with that title or a similar title. I don't have a problem that needs to be resolved at this time. I believe that a recent problem that I was involved with has been resolved and I am moving on in my editing and working with other editors constructively. I have some questions about avoiding such conflicts in the future and also about some strange messages that I have received from others after the conflict was resolved. Thank you very much.

File source problem with File:Dunces and Dragons.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Dunces and Dragons.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged.
