YouTube Video

I was searching YouTube on Wikipedia and just saw your video about bots (especially ClueBot) reverting articles. While some bots like the defunct AntiVandalBot reverted blatant vandalism in articles as early as 2006; ClueBot has been on since 2007 and has been in it's current form since about 2010. It is extremely fast and very good at what it does and has gotten the best of people many times on here. Wikipedia uses bots for many diverse purposes from reverting vandalism, archiving pages, figuring out the copyright status of pages and images, to even managing complex templates on a routine basis. A list of them are on Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval. Generally, at least from what I've known (even though I am not particularly interested in the bots on this website) as long as you aren't a crackpot, you're at least given a trial basis to test the bot. After that, depending on the success of it; it may be approved for use as a regular user in it's own special "Bot" category on Special:ListUsers&group=bot. A few also are given the status of administrator or sysop in addition to the bot status depending on what they have to do although that's more tightly regulated. Anyway, I'm glad that you're a librarian using Wikipedia. We need more educators on here. I like teachers and the teaching profession in general (even though I am too young to really make a difference in the educational field) but they seem to think the vandals and the fringe viewpoints speak for the entire project. It does not help that my former school (as a student) was blocked until August the last time I checked due to my classmates immaturity. --Thebirdlover (talk) 05:46, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed

Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.

It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. A new reference tool

Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. I wish I could help this year, but my work schedule makes it hard for me to get over to CCA before 6 pm on weekdays (I'll try to drop by for the last hour). I have my intro presentation slides with speaker notes available for reuse here in case you or anyone else would like to give that intro. To find additional Wikipedians to speak and mentor new editors, I'd recommend emailing the Wikimedia-SF mailing list - it has a good group of subscribers who may be interested and available. Also I've been working on the suggested topics list for Wikipedia:Meetup/San Francisco/Art+Feminism@SFAI 2017 since that's a weekend event that I can attend, and you'd be welcome to copy from that topics list to add to the list for your event if you like! ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Phette23. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
