Welcome!

Hey, welcome to WikiProject Films! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of films, awards, festivals, filmmaking, and film characters. If you haven't already, please add {{User WikiProject Films}} to your user page.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There is a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to jump right into editing? The style guidelines show things you should include.
  • Want to assist in some current backlogs within the project? Visit the Announcements template to see how you can help.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! —Erik (talkcontrib) 14:53, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank You, Erik

edit

Hi Erik, and thank you for the warm welcome. I'm a little apprehensive about all this yet because I don’t want to offend anyone. When I saw how many contributions some contributors have made, it made me feel kind of small. And here I am trying to improve on an article that was started by a real veteran and already edited by folks with lots more experience than I. I’m not even sure if this is the proper way to respond to someone. And I’m not sure yet how to initiate a conversation with someone. Do I just go to their talk page and edit it? I sure don’t want to mess up. I really want to help with the Our Gang articles, but don’t want to overstep my bounds and mess up someone else’s project. Perry Hotter (talk) 21:22, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Perry! It is okay to be apprehensive at first about editing. You can communicate with other editors on their user talk pages or on articles' talk pages. You can go to an editor's user talk page and click "new section" at the top to start a discussion. So if you want to reach me, just click on "talk" in my signature and start a new section for discussion. In the meantime, though, I can answer your questions here since I will have your user talk page watchlisted. Judging from your contributions, it looks like you are off to a good start. I strongly recommend writing edit summaries with each edit you make. This way, other editors can see what you are doing, and it is easier to find the specific edit that may need to be discussed. Click on "contrib" in my signature to see what kind of edit summaries I use (though I am not always great with them). If you are working on expanding film articles, it helps to look at our guidelines and how to write about fiction as well. If you have any questions about Wikipedia, WikiProject Films, or editing in general, just ask here! I am happy to help. :) —Erik (talkcontrib) 21:27, 26 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Erik. I just got a response back from another contributor that was also very encouraging. And I sent a message to another and I'm waiting for their reply. Now, could you please direct me to an example of a good film article that I could use for a guideline and goal for my articles? Your help is definitely appreciated. Perry Hotter (talk) 12:32, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
WikiProject Films has a spotlight page listing our Featured Articles and Good Articles. I think it would be a good start to look at some of the recent Good Articles to see how they are structured and referenced. Also, check out Changeling (film), which is our newest Featured Article and definitely raises the bar in how a film article should be written. —Erik (talkcontrib) 13:30, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Erik - I have a question about uploading pictures. Since One Terrible Day is public domain, is it OK to upload vidcaps from the film? Perry Hotter (talk) 01:42, 4 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

If it is public domain, then yes. Are you completely positive, though, that it is public domain? Have you seen an authoritative resource verify this? —Erik (talkcontrib) 13:44, 4 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't know how to find that information other than that User:JEN9841 added a note on the One Terrible Day article saying that it is public domain, and it is listed in the Wikipedia List of Public Domain films. A website called http://theluckycorner.com/rps/004.html says that it is public domain. Do you think this is adequate information to proceed? I hope I'm not acting stupid asking these questions.Perry Hotter (talk) 23:47, 4 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I see now that there was previously some debate about User:JEN9841's article on public domain films and that it was actually nominated for deletion at one time. So I guess the best source I have is The Lucky Corner. Can you suggest another source I could check? Thanks for your time.Perry Hotter (talk) 00:19, 5 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's not a stupid question; I am not familiar with such public domain films, and I don't know anyone else who edits articles about them. I have an indirect answer, though... this says that works published before 1923 are in the public domain, so since One Terrible Day is a 1922 film, it should be in the public domain. There may be a small issue with uploading pictures, though... how similar to the original product is the source? For example, if the film is "restored" on DVD in a major way, it might not be public domain because of these changes. I think that it seems okay otherwise, though. —Erik (talkcontrib) 17:20, 5 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
The DVD I have seems to be a pretty low budget operation, so I doubt if there's been any major restorations made to it. Thanks again for your help and for this valuable information. Perry Hotter (talk) 18:56, 5 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

re:Our Gang

edit

Hello. Nope, I don't mind at all. I'm always pleased to see any of the articles I start get expanded (no matter how little). Happy editing! Lugnuts (talk) 12:00, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

No problem! If you think that your edits have expanded an article from a stub (just a few basic lines), feel free to remove the stub tag. Also check out the film article's talk page, and remove any tags on there to (such as needs plot, for example). Feel free to contact myself, or post any questions on WT:FILM. Lugnuts (talk) 07:26, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I noticed that the Discussion page on the One Terrible Day article says the article is still rated as a stub. Please tell me what else I need to do to get this article upgraded to Starter statis (or whatever comes next). Perry Hotter (talk) 01:52, 1 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Userboxes

edit

Hello, can I make a suggestion? On your user page, start with {{Userboxtop}} (You can edit "Important things" to something else), add userboxes under that, and end the list with {{Userboxbottom}}. It may help organize the userboxes you added! :) —Erik (talkcontrib) 23:22, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK, Thanks Erik. Does this look a little better? Perry Hotter (talk) 00:02, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Erik, could you please help me find a good userbox for Our Gang or The Little Rascals? Perry Hotter (talk) 13:17, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Looks a lot better! You can move the WikiProject Films userbox into it, too, if you want. I took a quick gander around, but I didn't see the userbox you were looking for. However, I am not that big on userboxes. You may be interested in browsing WP:USERBOX#Interests and tastes. —Erik (talkcontrib) 13:55, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Erik - Hey, I made my own! Whatcha thank? Perry Hotter (talk) 15:39, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's pretty cool! :) You should link "The Little Rascals" to Our Gang; other userboxes usually link to the topic they refer to. —Erik (talkcontrib) 15:42, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

File source problem with File:Jack, Lincoln, Dotys.jpg

edit

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Jack, Lincoln, Dotys.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:47, 13 July 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 02:47, 13 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for explaining this to me, because I've had the concern that I need to give more information ever since I uploaded the images. I need to figure out how to tag them properly, but the description page is just so confusing to me. I'll try to get it done today, anyway.Perry Hotter (talk) 11:40, 13 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Drilnoth, please check the description page for this picture now and tell me what else I need to do to it. I didn't include the run time for the film because I haven't found it yet. And the image used in the Permission section isn't quite accurate either. It says "between 1923 and 1963" while I need it to say "before 1923." I apologize for being such a pain, but I'm trying to learn all the ropes here.Perry Hotter (talk) 14:43, 13 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Christianity in China

edit

Hello,

I reverted your addition to the Christianity in China article regarding the persecution for several reasons, not because the event isn't worth reporting, but that it doesn't help the article flow. It needs a source. Do you have one? If so, then please re-add it to the section dealing with house churches in such a way that it contributes to the flow of the article. As it is the article already addresses both house churches and persecution - so that leaves us with a hard call to make if we want to report on a specific story with all of its details, here. The article on Chinese house church might even be a better place to get more specific. Thanks for contributing on a very under-reported subject!Brian0324 (talk) 15:18, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Brian, thanks for the comment. My only source is the morning news, which I don't guess is a great source to quote. I was just so struck by the story that I felt it appropriate to share on the page concerning Chinese Christianity. If you don't think so, I'll just leave it.Perry Hotter (talk) 03:24, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your User Name

edit

You popped up on my watchlist yesterday, and I had just had to say I love your user name! I immediately thought of my friend Perry; and yes, she is hotter! I assume that's not what you meant and it's a spoonerism of Harry Potter. That makes me laugh even more because some people have told me I look like Harry Potter! In any case, thanks for the smile, and have a great day! Acps110 (talkcontribs) 20:06, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Actually it is a spoonerism of Harry Potter. I am an HP fan and at first I had great dreams of being the biiiig Wikipedia editor for the Harry Potter pages, but everyone and his uncle wants to do that. And I was waaaaay to late to do Star Trek, another one of my favorites. I did however make a significant contribution to the V (2009) pages. But when I checked out Our Gang, I saw a wide open field. I'm actually begging for people to help me, there's so much to do there. Perry Hotter (talk) 02:16, 18 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
