Jeremie@theLab Humbly Requests Your Services

edit

I noticed some awesome signatures floating around the site, most notably that of Earth KING. I managed to trace them back to you, and I was wondering if you could improve my sig?

-- – Jeremie@theLab (Command The Interface | Holosphere)

That's my full "state" signature, and I was hoping you could play around with it.

What I'd Like Done

  • Around the "Jeremie@theLab" portion, I'd like you to create a box that, from left to right, fades from red to white to blue in that order. That way I get the "All American" look. If you could make the words and letters bold black so they don't fade into the background, that would be helpful.
  • For the "Command the Interface" (talk page) and "Holosphere" (contributions) sections, just put them off to the top-righthand corner of the main signature, surrounded by a box with a fade from black to green, with black on the left (surround the talk link) and green (surrounding the contribs link). You don't have to change the letter color here.

I hope that is presented in a straight-forward manner. I understand that you are busy with other users at the moment, so I don't mind being put on the waiting list. Just leave a message on my talk page if and when you are ready. Thank you very much. --Jeremie@theLab 21:13, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

At last! A client who knows what he wants, and knows how to ask for it! I can do all that, but my guess is we'll exceed 600 characters of code, while the WP:SIG limit is some 200-250, because people complain they can't read through all this code in the edit windows. I suggest we drop the links. Any other idea for shortening it? PS: I'll do it like you asked if you so wish, but I'll not be responsible for the consequences, since I advise you not to use it. :NikoSilver: 22:08, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree, we can drop the links. I rarely use the full state sig anyway, and most often just stick with my userpage link. As for other ways to shorten it, you wouldn't necessarily have to bold my username letters or change the color. They could stay bold blue, or the standard thin blue. I'm just concerned people couldn't read it that way. Other than that I can't think of a way to shorten it without compromising the basic design. Do you know some trick that would shorten the character count? --Jeremie@theLab 01:49, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Char color is only 10 characters, and bold-unbold is only 7. I know many other tricks. I'll just start working on it:

 Jeremie@theLa

(368 chars) This is exactly what you asked and it is still long. Besides, I suspect you don't like it either, partly because it looks like you're French, and partly because if you try fading three colors, the result is tone-sur-tone stripes, rather than actual fountain fill. I could deal with the second handicap as follows, but that increases code length further:

 Jeremie@theLa

(576 chars) Forget it!

I'll try to do some other combination. IMO, the best combination that would resemble the American flag, would be if we had red background. Here's one with blue to white fading letters:

 Jeremie@theLab

(265 chars and ugly)

So, now we need something better: Look, the stars in the flag and half of the stripes are both white. The only thing that changes is the border behind them. So I'll start the border blue, finish it red, and make the chars white:

 Jeremie@theLab

(176 chars)

...or simpler (without the red border):

 Jeremie@theLab

(142 chars)

Now if you like any of these two above, we still have some room for your links...:NikoSilver: 09:56, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wow! That's awesome work! I must say that, even though it has more chars, I like the sig with 176 chars and red border. Now, as for links. I think the only link I want is my "Command the Interface" talk page link. A contributions link, in my opinion, makes it look like I'm showing off what I've done. For "Command the Interface" do you think you could create:
1) A solid blue background box with the white bold lettering in it and put it off to the top righthand corner of the main sig?
If you can do that, great! Thank you once again for your work. --Jeremie@theLab 10:36, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sure, here goes:

 Jeremie@theLab Command The Interface

Ouch! 285 chars :-(

Trying without red border:

 Jeremie@theLab Command The Interface

God is playing games with us! 251 chars! Joining the words will do it marginally to 248 chars:

 Jeremie@theLab CommandTheInterface

Personally, I think the black/white thing doesn't mix nicely with red-white-blue, plus I hate the border jumping upwards in superscript. I suggest this:

 Jeremie@theLab

212 chars, and the link to your talk is in the non-bold part after the '@' sign (like e-mail or something).

Of course, we could always shrink the code if we left the '@theLab' part bold but unformatted:

 Jeremie@theLab

...(158 chars) which would allow some room for the red border you like so much:

 Jeremie@theLab

...(219 chars) which is a little too much colored now. I preferred the 212 or 158 ones, in order of preference. :NikoSilver: 12:20, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

PS. We can shorten the code further if we use a redirected username/usertalk, like the one I made for my sig (User:N!) or like admin's User:FrancisTyers (User:F-m-t). If you make a 2 character username redirect (e.g. 'User:J!'), then the code will shorten by 24chars! :NikoSilver: 12:28, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I'm liking your 212 char possibility. It doesn't have links, but I'm okay with that. A talk page can be accessed via the userpage anyhow. Yes. I hope this decision isn't premature, but I will be exceptionally satisfied if I can walk away with the 212 char sig. If we haven't done enough or you have a sudden inspiration, by all means, show me! --Jeremie@theLab 02:42, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Very well, I'll take my signature now and use it. THANK YOU SO MUCH! --Jeremie@theLab 15:49, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I liked that too! We can shorten it further if you create User:J! that redirs to your userpage if you like. •NikoSilver 07:30, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, let's do that! How do I make a redirect? ---- Jeremie@theLab
  1. Log out
  2. Click log-in
  3. Click new account
  4. Create new user (eg "J!"), type a password (eg same as yours)
  5. Log in as new user "J!"
  6. Edit your new userpage and type:
    #REDIRECT [[User:Jeremie@theLab]]
  7. Edit your new talkpage and type:
    #REDIRECT [[User talk:Jeremie@theLab]]
  8. Don't forget to log-out as J!, and re-log-in as Jeremie...

Message me when done, and I'll modify your sig, or modify it yourself by replacing 'Jeremie@theLab' with 'J!'. •NikoSilver 07:53, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Done. I've made the new account and redirected. -- Jeremie@theLab

Ok, then your sig can be:

 Jeremie@theLab

Which is only 188 chars long! One disadvantage though: In the edit window, people will not be able to figure out your sig! If you care about that, I can propose a 200 char alternative, which uses the redir only for your talk:

 Jeremie@theLab

See the codes and choose any version you like.•NikoSilver 20:35, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The 200 char version looks perfect for my uses. So, do I just take it now or is there more to do? --  Jeremie@theLab
What do you mean? Should I send you the bill? :-) •NikoSilver 06:45, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Why of course! And just how do I pay online? :-D --  Jeremie@theLab
