And to you. Thanks for your very wise comments on the merge discussion and for your interest in this controversial area. Best. --E4024 (talk) 19:00, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Your pics

There is a reference to your beautiful pics in my TP. I especially liked one of a Roman way in Turkey and another of a medieval korugan (cannot recall the English word now) that are outstanding. We have to use them in the related articles of En:WP (if we already have not, of course) and not only in Turkey-related articles... Selamlar. --E4024 (talk) 12:42, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the compliment. I used almost all images in my articles in en:WP (I have three new additions today) . Unfortunatelly except for a few early images I couldn't use the them in tr:WP, because I experience the same fate as you in tr:WP. But I'd be happy to see these images used all versions of WP. (By the way, korugan is casemate and I used the image in Casemates of İbrahim Pasha). Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 18:50, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
No compliment here. Very good pics. Congratulations! Please add that one to the gallery at Casemate and the Roman road pic to the Roman Empire or somewhere similar; it is an "israf" keeping these great pics at only Turkey-related articles... --E4024 (talk) 18:58, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Just the reverse. Most of these images are used in en:WP. But only a few of them are used in tr:WP. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 19:12, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Turkish language

Hi, I've noticed your edits to the article on Turkish language and they seem fine. You should however be aware that the article is currently an FA but it is being considered for FA-review and if the review finds that it no longer meets the criteria it will be demoted. A lot of the content you have added is not sourced. For FA status to be retained it is crucial to increase the amount of sourcing in the article, there should be basically no paragraphs without an inline citation. Also material in tables needs to be sourced. I'd encourage you to keep that in mind as you edit the article, if you believe the article should retain its FA status. ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 14:35, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

I am not running for the reward. I am trying to enrich the article. As the material needs some research, I need time to complete the paragraphs. I added a reference for the first subsection (about devoicing). But the second subsection (about tenses) is net complete yet. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 15:43, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
You misunderstand, the article is already a featured article, which means that if your edits do not maintain the standard of sourcing required for featured article status it will loose that status soon. I am encouraging you to be cautious not to add unsourced material because doing so is not generally considered an improvement even if the article becomes more informative.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 15:49, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Well I don't want to be held resposible for the article losing status. Please check the two subsections (devoicing and tenses) and let me know if there are adequate or not. If you feel they are inadequate, I am ready to delete my contributions. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 19:54, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
I think your additions look good, with two caveats, I think that it would be helpful if you formatted the references in the same way the rest of the references are formatted, 2. it would be best if you didn't use websites as a source but academically published books about the Turkish language. It is not a requirement that sources be in English, but generally it is preferred to use English sources if the same information is available.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 20:11, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

I made a good addition to the Turkic languages article the other day; but my edit was removed by a POV-pushing editor. You could also use that. I know that in WP there are many objective people to help... --E4024 (talk) 21:23, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Image Description

Hey! I'm going through some images that are missing descriptions. I found File:DB table.jpg and I do not even know what the table is for. Could you help me out? Or if there isn't use we can nominate it for deletion. 00:58, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

It was one of the first images I've uploaded. It was a list of decibel values of ratios widely used in electronic and acoustics. I used it in one of my articles. But somebody deleted it from the article, claimimg it can be easily calculated by logarithms. I think a wikitable form may be more useful. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 08:45, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Turkish women

Nedim Abi, I "accept" that lately I have been writing Write instead of Right, Piece instead of Peace, Accept instead of Except etc. I think these and some other similar mistakes can be seen as I am getting old, Wright? I hope it is simply age, nothing else. BTW thanks for the beautiful Turkish women pics. I missed Mine Mutlu but that was my generation's idol... --E4024 (talk) 15:21, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

We are all getting old. But cross checking will reduce the errors. The photo of your choice doesn't appear in Commons. But we badly need photos of women filling the gaps between Satı Kadın of 1935 and Fatma Girik of 1960s and also between Fatma Girik and Çağla Kubat of 2006. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 15:45, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Prof Abadan-Unat, Adalet Ağaoğlu gibi hanımların gençlik resimleri olsa... Bir de Prof Kuçuradi var ama o 1936 doğumlu, in the 50s she was a university student. None of these VIW have a pic in their articles; shame on us! Only Muazzez İlmiye Çığ has a pic in her article but not from the 50s, very recent one. I am sure you can help more in this area. Thanks for your very appreciated contributions. --E4024 (talk) 16:47, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks again for your contributions to this article/area. I would love to have a Women in Turkish Parliament article, and maybe also Women in Turkish politics. The first one looks easier to build. If you can open that stub I will try to help. Thank you very much. --E4024 (talk) 13:46, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Done. See Women in Turkish parliament. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 18:03, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

16 beyliks

Hi again, Your remark about the beyliks in Talk:Historic states represented in Turkish presidential seal is interesting. It shouldn't be lost in the talk page. If you can source your claim, why don't you add a section (maybe triva) about it ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 16:56, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi. That is not my claim, but sourced fact.
P.S. The title Women in Turkish parliament is very strange. Secretaries, tea deliverers who are working in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey are also involved ? Mesela "Female deputies to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey" gibi basliklar daha mantikli. Calismanizi bitirince halledelim. Takabeg (talk) 01:27, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
P.S.'nin P.S.si : ) Your name was mentioned here. Takabeg (talk) 01:30, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
Replies for the above comments:
  • Historic states represented in Turkish presidential seal: I did't say it was not a fact. Only I'don't have a source about it and asked you to add the fact (which you've done).
  • Women in Turkish Parliament: Actually I didn't plan and prepare for the article. I only helped another user to start it. (You can see the message above)
  • Thanks for your contribution in Wikimedia. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 08:10, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Reword ?

About this edits: Reword doesn't mean removal of sourced information. Please try again without loss of information. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 09:36, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

By now you should have known me. I don't like to delete information. I keep your wording in the talk. Of course you can add the data in a section e.g., "Former discussions about the stars " etc. But I don't think that data had a place in the lede. Cheers.Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 09:48, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Women in Turkish politics

Nedim Bey, I asked contribution from "girl power" for the article you have been working on. Here is what I have got: "Hi! It looks like your new article is shaping up great. I'm impressed! If I could offer a couple suggestions, it looks like the background section could do with some expansion and a couple of citations. I also think it would be awesome if you could give some details on the female government ministers beyond their office and years in service, for example, what their projects were in office, what their party affiliation was, what reforms they enacted, etc. I really like the tables, that's great for showing the trend over history. Let me know if you want a copyedit, review, anything. Good luck and great job!" I share this comment with you not only for the useful suggestions but also for the beautiful words therein, that you have deserved more than me. Best. --E4024 (talk) 16:46, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Canik

Canik adı Türkçe değildir. Çani/Can/Zan/Tzan/Sanni = Laz anlamındadır. Doğu Romalılar, Doğu Karadeniz'e "Tzanike" demiştir. Tıpkı İstanbul, Adana, İzmir, Bursa, Trabzon gibi adların Türkçe olmaması gibi, Canik adı da Türkçe değildir. Ancak Anadolu Beylikleri dönemindeki Canik Beylikleri Türktür. O tarihten itibaren bu bölge Türktür. Canik Beylikleri = Beyliks of Canik maddesini yazmanız iyi olmuş. Bulduğum Canik Beylerinin adlarını da Beyliks of Canik maddesine ekledim... Saygılarımla, Böri (talk) 12:24, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Katkınız için teşekkürler. Maddenin varlığına karşı çıkmış değiller. Ama kaynak gösteremediğim için etiketlendi. Şayet güvenilir bir kaynağınız varsa, ekleyin. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 14:56, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Diğer dillerdeki Wikipedialarda geçmemesi çok normal. Amerikalılar-Avrupalılar, Canik Türk Beyliklerinin tarihini çok mu iyi biliyorlar sanki? Ben, bulabildiğim hükümdar adlarını Yılmaz Öztuna'nın "Devletler ve Hanedanlar" adlı eserinin II.Cildinden yazdım. Ayrıca Uzunçarşılı'nın eserinin giriş bölümünde Anadolu Beyliklerinden bahesediyor... Oraya da bakmak lazım. Böri (talk) 15:05, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

About The Sun Language Theory

Zamanla bu "amma uzun", Amazon'a dönüşmüştür.[10]" yazmışlar... Theodore Makridi

In the article Theodore Makridi, he was identified as Greek-Ottoman-Turkish. I think Ottoman is OK, but Greek-Turkish adjectives are redundant (unless a section on his origin is included.) Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 16:58, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Normally I would be content with "Ottoman". However, mark that he died in 1940, retired in 1930 from Istanbul Archaeological Museum, therefore he was Turkish, too. For that reason I think we should better keep "Turkish". He also worked in Athens in 1930's but I do not know if he became a Greek citizen, apart from his ethnically being Greek. If there had been a Greek archaeologist of Turkish ethnicity, would you say he was Turkish? Filanca (talk) 17:33, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nedim Ardoğa. The table which you two times tried to add, has many mistakes. Just compare informations of the table with the articles (Aynalıkavak Palace etc.). Also most of the palaces isn't palace but pavilion.( See National Palaces)--Qara Khan 16:11, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Drogheda United

However, there are no records of this with the Drogheda Port, and the star and crescent predate the famine. However, a recent letter was found which was written by the Irish merchandises explicitly thanked the Ottoman Sultan for their help. The letter was found at the Turkish archive. Hi Nedim Ardoğa,

It is always a pleasure to see you here. Regarding hisar, all Serbian language sources which deal with this name translate it either as town (vast majority) or hill. Tardu comment

Nedim, thank you for the Tardu correction. Tardu was a title, from the Tardu Kanat = Western (Right) Wing, there were numerous Tardus in the various Kaganates during the years, not all of their proper names are known, but in this case we know both name and position. It makes sense to run the article under his name, not the title, consistent with all other personal articles, and have Tardu (or Tardush) as a disambiguation page or a separate article page listing people who headed the Western Wing in different states. I would gladly contribute to such arrangement. Your thoughts?

BTW, Turkic pages have greatly improved from 5-7 years ago, when they were unloved siblings of loved subjects, and your efforts and stamina in that are greatly appreciated. Barefact (talk) 16:10, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the compliments. I'm happy to see you being still with us. Because Turkic history needs many many contributions and (like whole Central Asia Project) there aren't many contributors. (By the way do you have sources about Turksanf, Tardu's younger brother ?) Cheers and happy editing. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 16:48, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I do have some, they are incidental, because I do not follow individual personalities. How do you want me to pass over what I have? Barefact (talk) 17:53, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nedim, as I said in the close here, Darkwind closed that the template be moved to that title. Does it not make sense to move the article too? Closing the discussion and moving the title are two different things. You can see that somebody proposed moving and I opposed it. No other remarks, no consensus. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 06:36, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
There was a request on WP:AN/RFC to close it because the other one had been closed by Darkwind as move. Would you like to me to undo the move and re-open the discussion? SlimVirgin (talk) 23:49, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Executed Ottoman people vs. Executed Turkish people

May I ask why you were removing Category:Executed Turkish people from Ottoman people who were Turkish? Category:Executed Ottoman people is not currently a subcategory of Category:Executed Turkish people, so it would make sense for a Ottoman person who was Turkish to be in both categories. --Nlu (talk) 15:10, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

(Unless, of course, you think that Category:Executed Ottoman people should in fact be a subcategory of Category:Executed Turkish people — and I'd like your thoughts on that.) --Nlu (talk) 15:18, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
f course you may ask. You can see that there were at least three or four categories for execution. xx century executions, people executed by Ottoman Emp., executed Ottoman people, executed Turks (Albanians, Serbs etc.) Isn't this overdone ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 15:30, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
Well, we have these categories because people may have multiple identities, and the theory (I realize that in practice it may be messy) is that it helps readers locate articles properly and ascertain the identities quickly. Of course, it can get out of hand (see, e.g., Thomas More), but I do think that categorization is in general a helpful thing. --Nlu (talk) 15:36, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Ottoman periods

I saw the improvements and changes you did with the Ottoman Empire period dates. I would just like to draw your attention to two articles that you probably missed: History of the Ottoman Empire and Ottoman Empire (history section). Those articles still have the old dates. Could you fix those too? Thanks King Philip V of Spain (talk) 16:30, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion. But those articles are too involved to be fixed by a simple copy and paste method. (You see I hate to clear out fellow contributors' edits.) Anyway, I'll fix them in the near future. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 19:56, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Historian or not

Hi Nedim. Why don't you just open Mr Latsistalis' Facebook page to see where he was educated –if at all!– and the quality of its written Greek, if you might have it chequed? In any case, Nikos Latsistalis, even if his intentions are not bad, is not a historian. He misleads the visitors of Drama because he is not able to discern between an aquaduct and a real bridge and cannot understand that "Drama Köprüsü" is a bridge that could exist only in Drama itself and not 16 kilometres away from it, in the village of Nustretli (Gk. Nikeforos), birthplace of Emineh Hanem Ali Shehirli (1770-1824). My interference in the Wikipedia discussion on "Drama Köprüsü" was only aiming to inform people inerested in the bridge of Drama that Mr Ltsistalis, a very successful Drama "kebabci" indeed, is neiter a historian by any means, not a trustworthy tour guide. A word to the wise is enough! I shall not trouble anybody again with my "vandalisms". Cordially, Nonnamer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nonnamer (talkcontribs) 10:32, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nonnamer, I don't know why you're angry ? I didn't accuse you for vandalism. (If you watch the history of the page you can see that I am not the one who reverted your edits.) You insistently edited about Mr.Nikos Latsistalis' profession and all I did was to ask for a source. In my sources he is portrayed as a local historian and this does not contradict with him being a kebap restaurant owner. Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 11:21, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Sorry Nedim. I am not angry. I am just trying to inform public. And you are absolutely right. All this has nothing to do with Mr Latsistalis' profession. It has only to do with his incompetence. Nonnamer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nonnamer (talkcontribs) 12:55, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Want to work together on Turks in the Tang military?

I remember your contributions to Tang campaigns against the Western Turks. Would you be interested in working together on Turks in the Tang military? I want to nominate the article for DYK, and would appreciate your expertise on Turkic history. Turkic culture substantially influenced Chinese culture, and many of the emperors of the Tang dynasty were Turkophiles, something that isn't popularly known. For a while, a drink made of yogurt imported by the Turks even replaced tea as the most popular drink in northern China. Best regards,--Typing General (talk) 03:20, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

List of massacres in Turkey

Hello, I am writing this to you in order to inform you that some Turkish-related articles have for quite some time been hijacked by a group of editors whose only goal, it seems, is to negatively portray the Republic of Turkey, its predesseccors and its people as warmongerming murderers. This has especially become a problem in the article of List of massacres in Turkey where they only allow information about Turks killing others, and delete all reliabely sourced information about massacres against Turks/Muslims. By doing WP:OR, discrediting sources and authors, source falsification, distortion and tag bombing.

Sources which state the number of Muslims casualties during the Greco-Turkish war is persistently being deleted.

Your help is needed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.178.77.28 (talk) 20:17, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

re: your request

The verb "leave" would be fine to use. The verb "renounce" indicates they dislike being associated with the former group's ideas. You could also say they "split off" from the former group to start their own party. Hope this helps. -LilHelpa (talk) 13:45, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Taurus Mountains

Hey Nedim, I noticed that you always write "Toros Mountains" when talking about the Taurus Mountains, which is the Turkish name for them. Could you refer to them with their English name in future articles?

Thanks! Cheers.

Ithinkicahn (talk) 03:26, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Except for compound names, I always prefer English words (mountains instead of dağları etc.) But Toros is a proper noun and it should be used in original form. (Even in Britannica Atlas it is Toros and not Taurus) Besides In WP you can use any name provided that the link is correctly targetted (which is the case with Taurus Mountains) Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 09:16, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Honestly, I've never heard anyone use "Toros" as the proper noun in English. A lot of things are proper nouns but have their own English version. I think everyone would agree to that. Ithinkicahn (talk) 13:58, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
In WP there are two types of foreign names. For names which have constituted an established usage in English, the English version is preferred. For others (who knows anything about Toros except for the academicians) the editors follow the conventions of the language appropriate to the subject. See WP. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 14:28, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Not sure how "Taurus Mountains" isn't an established usage in English. That's the way it's always referred to. I live in the United States, and that's the way it's always used. Never have I once encountered anything other than that. Ithinkicahn (talk) 18:48, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
As a rule proper nouns are untranslatable (except those with international reputation and constitute an established usage). Well a mountain range in Turkey can't have an established usage in English. (You may have observed that most Americans don't even know exactly where Turkey is on the map). Now please check these names; Babička Gora, Großer Hundstod and Făgăraș Mountains all of which have been written in the local languages. I see you're quite industrious. Why don't you begin creating new articles instead of changing the names ? Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 07:25, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Just because those names are directly referred to as their names in their native languages doesn't make Taurus Mountains suddenly unestablished in the English language. And thank you, but I seem to have plenty of work cleaning up the wreckage you've left behind, so that's work enough. Ithinkicahn (talk) 07:40, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Valide sultan

Note:Above message in Turkish is about an article in tr:WP which was interlinked to the corresponding article in en:WP.

  • Nedim bey, yazdıklarınıza katılıyorum. Aslında maddede sizi rahatsız eden konuları ben de maddede not etmişim zaten. Örneğin Hürrem Sultan'ın adının yanında verilen Not 1 Hürrem Sultan'ın oğlu tahta geçmeden önce vefat ettiği için Valide Sultan olamadığını belirtiyor. Esnlilkler dilerim. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 11:08, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Turkey province-level stubs may be deleted, need your input on the discussion

Hey Nedim, someone proposed that the top-level (province-level) geography stub categories for Turkey (for example, Category:Edirne Province geography stubs) should be deleted because they are not very populated at the moment. They made this proposal at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2013 October 25#Undersized Turkey geography stub categories and marked them for deletion. I'd like you to add your input on the matter; I for one voted to keep them, since they are province-level (and thus pretty important) stub categories.

Begendik

Nemdim. Hello. I was just looking your recently created Begendik page. I see another editor added Άγιος Στέφανος Agios Stefanos. Interestingly that one that is formerly Ayostefanos is my (Greek origin) grandmother's home town.

What is going on is there are several Begendiks, and actually even two in Turkish Thrace.

Begenidik that was formerly Άγιος Στέφανος Agios Stefanos, is right on the Black Sea coast, the first town below the Turkish Bulgarian border at the Multudere/Resvedere/Resevo River. is It was part of a collection Ottoman Greek towns in the Kaza of Agagathopolis (Turkish Atenbulu, now Bulgarian Ahtopol) that were there since ancient times and got transferred to Bulgaria after the Balkan Wars.

The Bulgarian Turkish border in the 1800's before the Balkan wars was north quite a bit on the coast at "Kiten." It was moved down to the Mutludere at the treaty of Neuilly in 1919. This transferred all of the Agathopolis Ottoman "Kaza" (subprovince eg Kırklareli) to Bulgaria except for Ayosefanos.

There were about 30,000 Greeks in that set of towns, there since classical times, and they were thrown out by Bulgarian forces in the Balkan wars. They were formally denaturalized in the Neuilly Treaty, in 1919, in a model that would then be pushed by the great powers in the 1923 exchange between Greece and Turkey.

Those lucky few like my grandmother, who were Agostefanos natives were allowed to return by the Ottomans, since they were still Ottoman subjects on the one part of that collection of towns that remained in Turkey. That fortune turned to misfortune as they were ejected again in the 1923 exchange.

None of this is to put any blame on anything that occurred in these terrible wars on any one group, but just to lay out the history of the other Begendik.

I do so because, although I have some knowledge of Wikipedia, I don't know how to create a "disambiguation page" necessary to create a second Begendik entry for the former Ayostefano, and hope you will. ThanksConstan50 (talk) 03:21, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi, if you search the List of populated places in Kırklareli Province you can see the name Beğendik under Demirköy heading. It is now a rather small village with a population of 277. Last year I tried to create articles about the small settlements in Turkey. But the problem is that it is difficult to find written sources about them. As for the disambiguation, of course it is easy. But at least some of the items in the page should have articles in WP. In case of Beğendik there is only one. But I'll see if I can create some others. In that case I'll certainly crete a disambig. page and show Beğendik, Demirköy (preferibly in a blue link). Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 04:43, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Nedim, Teşekkürler.
here are some of the facts on black sea coastal Begendik -
- former Ottoman Greek name: Ayostefano (NOY the same as Ayio Stephanos/San Stephano/Yeşilkoy which was a Marmara suburb of Istanbul)
- in the coast just south of the Mutludere
- was one of several Greek settled coastal towns that were part of Ottoman Agathopolis "Kaza" (small Ottoman administrative unit)
- was the only town in Agathopolis Kaza not transferred to Bulgaria as a result of the Balkan Wars
- Greeks were transferred out in the population exchange of 23.
- Area was not repopulated by much for decades as it was a border, and then a strongly military NATO border (in fact I myself visited there with NATO in the early e80's and it was still heavily militarized)
- Begendik is now a nascent tourist area.
- It currently advocates for creation of a border crossing with Bulgaria to increase tourism.
I guess the thing is I know mostly the Greek history of the place. But this today is a Turkish town with Turkish people so I don't want to make an article about simply the Greek aspect of it. There are many places in the region where the Turkish, or Greek or Bulgarian etc histories are poorly documented in contemporary notes. I don't want to seem like I have an agenda by simply putting in the part I know of. Constan50 (talk) 23:50, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
