ISP Proxy in the UAE

edit

Please don't block IPs from the United Arab Emirates. The Regulatory Authority REQUIRES that internet connections go through the telecom providers proxy filter, so we have no legal choice in the matter. These IPs are assigned dynamically (and frequently change while connected) so if one user abuses an IP, by blocking it all that happens is that the next user on that IP is affected. Not the original spammer or abuser. I disconnected and reconnected several times to get through with an IP that is not blocked so I can edit this page.

"Your account or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by Naconkantari for the following reason (see our blocking policy): open proxy or zombie (see WikiProject on open proxies for information)

Hi,

You have put yourself as interested in helping out atWikiProject on user warnings. We are now at a stage where we are creating the new templates and are wondering if you are still interested? If so please visit the overview page and choose a warning type you wish to work on. There is a base template available here, which you can copy and use to get you started. Have a look through the redirects and see what old templates are affected and incorporate them into the the new system. Anyway, any questions please don't hesitate to give me a shout. 202.154.255.1 open proxy

edit

Hi. Thanks for blocking 202.154.255.1 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) for 31 hours.

Since that's almost certainly an open proxy, once the block expires, this IP is pretty much a back door into Wikipedia. Given the long delays at WP:OP, could you consider a longer block? This will prevent further problems.

The address is already blocked by two of the major Internet blacklists -- see these Completewhois excerpts:

I'm not sure what to do with this person's actions. He's filed a spurious RfC on me once, and he seems to have a very long history of disrupting Wikipeida, being blocked, and other things that would have gotten someone else permabanned a long time ago. However, I'm not willing to take any actions against him as he seems like a prolific contributor to the Wiki, and he is (looking over his RfC's) notorious for mediation techniques producing any change. I've tried to limit my interaction with this person, even pointing out on an AfD that his absence would hinder the ability to update the article. Now he's attacking my WikiProject for no other reason than he doesn't like me. Should I just continue to ignore him, or what? Hi, you deleted article Sunnyside Royal Hospital as speedy deletion category G12. However, neither the hangon tag nor that the article had already been re-written was taken into account. Knights of Glory and Beer on deletion review

edit

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Knights of Glory and Beer. Since you closed the deletion discussion for (or speedy-deleted) this article, you might want to participate in the deletion review. The original editors are vehemently contesting the deletion on "Lots of people care a lot about this group" grounds. I know it isn't notability in the wikipedia sense, but they make claims on the talk page of the article that MAY lead one to think this group MIGHT be able to pass notability tests under WP:WEB and WP:N. I still hold no opinion (and considering the incivil way the article's creators are treating me, feeling rather altruisitic), but I listed it since I think it needs more review. It may still turn out to be non-notable, but we need more eyes on this one. Jayron32 20:15, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Spam list

edit

Hi,

I realize you are on a break, but I thought I'd pose this question to you for an answer at a later time. I ran into someting I hadn't before while editing an Article. I tried to add a source link to an Article, but got a message that said the link was on a "spam block list" (or something like that). The link looked pretty legitimate to me; it is a list of the family trees of famous Americans. I tried to provide you with the link to check it out, but I couldn't Save this message with the link included in it. The link includes the address 'ishipress.com'. The title of the link is "Family Trees of Thomas Jefferson and Other Famous Americans". Help!

Thanks,

Complaint of vandalism on Hal Turner talk page

May I ask for the reason concerning the deletion of the topic "GNAA likely culprit behind attacks on Hal Turner Show 12.24.2006"?

The person had vandalized my second reply repeatedly. I provided the links to back up my assertion in an objective matter.

I ask that the topic be restored as it relates to the discussion to the recent attack on Hal Turner by the particular group, unless you've made your case why it cannot be reinstated with valid references to Wiki policies. G.O.L.A.Z. 03:34, 26 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

edit

To avoid overly broad blocks, I have preemptively added a dot at the beginning of many spam blacklist entries (so that only the intended domain is blocked, not domains of which the name ends with the same). The following of your blocks have been changed thusly (new forms):

\.ho\.com\.ua
\.rdos\.net
\.coz\.in
\.5(3|4)\.pl
\.hepi\.pl
\.xhost\.ro
\.sufx\.net

\.nif1\.com
\.45\.kg
\.thea(s|p|t)\.info

\.ton4all\.com
\.topege\.com
\.tatsoul\.com
\.aswev\.info
\.lenta\.com\.ua
\.pill[0-9]\.info
\.soduko\.org

I also removed the 'www' at the start of the following blocks:

\.box\.net\/public\/4y0dyzya43
\.internationalpenfriends\.net

I have removed the following block from the list; please replace it with a more specific one:

-coupons\.org

Finally I removed the blocking of newaf\.info because it was already blocked by the rule "\.new(a|e|i|o|u|y)[0-9a-z-]\.info"

I'm unblocking this user, as the user had not been warned that his actions might lead to a block. What...? How it that a Personal Attack? Bishonen | talk 22:20, 28 December 2006 (UTC).Reply

So, the fact that he doesn't expect Doc Glasgow to understand is something he is not allowed to do? Would I be attacking you if I didn't expect you to understand the process necessary for a legitimate block that won't be overturned in only a few minutes, or would I be attacking you only if I said that? At what point is it his opinion to hold? Apparently, you do not think anyone is allowed to have a poor opinion of another and therefore think you are at some project without users. A call so bad as to qualify as an RFAR offense

edit

Blocking Giano 1) without warning 2) for a "PA," when personal attacks are not a legitimate part of the blocking policy, 3) without discussion on WP:AN/I, 4) when AN/I and AN are in flames for frivolous blocks of Giano II, 5) when Jimbo just unblocked Giano II after a previous frivolous block, is so absolutely over the line, so entirely without justification as to be explainable only by the most profound ignorance or the most egregious willful attempt at disrupting Wikipedia. Please consider this an official warning that if you continue to try to provoke such dysfunction, you will be blocked and arbitrated. Geogre 02:43, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ridiculous comment. Jimbo already indicated Giano was drinking in last-chance saloon. He ignored the appeal for civility. Sorry, Geogre, your mate's free pass has now officially expired.--Docg 23:22, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
From WP:NPA, In extreme cases, an attacker may be blocked under the "disruption" clause of the blocking policy. If you would please read the block message again, Jimbo explicitly stated "I fully endorse the previous block". I blocked because of the additional personal attack. If you feel my actions were incorrect, please participate in the thread on WP:ANI about this instead of attacking me on my talk page. Thanks Naconkantari 02:52, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
 1. It may be in extreme cases. An extreme case would be "you are a child molestor." It would not be a snide comment. That you can so far, so wholly, misinterpret both the word "may" and "extreme" is astonishing, if you're telling the truth. That you entirely avoided following blocking policy is abusives, plain and simple. Did you warn? No. Did you announce it at AN/I? No. Did you confer with any other administrator? No. Did you follow our rules? No. Is that how an administrator should behave? No. This is not an attack: this is a warning that you are in flagrant violation of Wikipedia policy. Geogre 15:04, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't feel that this is how you should behave, either. If you have a problem with my actions, please take it up on ANI, RFC, or wherever you feel is appropriate. Please stop attacking me on my talk page. Thanks Naconkantari 15:14, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

POV-Because Template "Deletion Review"

edit

Hi.

I saw you closed the "deletion review" I started for the POV-because template. Maybe it wasn't a good idea because technically the page was not deleted, however it was a subject of a Template for Deletion request, so I thought I could use it, but I guess not. However, I have got a big fat zero in terms of replies to my queries on the talk page for the template, and that also contributed to it due to my frustration (and I'd still like a response, indeed.). But I apologize for any inconvenience the "review request" may have caused. 74.38.35.171 08:55, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your deletion of the article Arden Automobilbau GmbH

Hi. I noticed you deleted an article I created. In the deltion log, you don't invoke any reason for deleting it. I don't know the deletion criterion by heart, but I do know them enough to wonder why would an editor would delete it. Please clarify that with me. By the way, using a full lenght reason rather than a code like "G11" or "W169" would definitely be more helpful to other users for identifying the reason of the deletion of their articles, especially to those who don't want to search for those codes everytime, or learn them by heart, and that would surely diminish the amounts of requests you get later on, hehe. Some entries on the list may be more or less dubious--there isn't a very clear line at times, but explorion at least is not spam. Please look at the content--it is a good specialized repository. Deletion of 'Metra Electronics'

edit

Hi, you recently deleted the article I created about Metra Electronics. I am guessing the reason you deleted it is that I only cited one source which was the company's website. While this was the only source I used, I believe there is still a good reason for this article to exist. When going to the Metra Electronics website, it is not easy to get a good idea of what the company does. They have products listed, but instead of using regular names like 'wiring harness' they use their own fancy names like 'turbowire.' Also, the "About" section of the website offers a letter from the president that talks about their latest advances, and does not give the visitor much information about the company itself. I made this article as a summary of the information I gleaned from their website as well as tidbits from other sites online. I believe it is valuable in that regard. I was planning on expanding the article as well, and including a list and small amount of info on Metra's child companies.

A request for assistance

edit

Would you support the concept of moving the Earhart "myths" to a separate page or article? The reason for my suggesting this is that the main article should be an accurate and scholarly work while the speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart are interesting, they belong in a unique section. Most researchers, as you know, discount the many theories and speculation that has arisen in the years following her last flight. Go onto the Earhart discussion page and register your vote/comments...and a Happy New Year to you as well. Bzuk 05:52 3 January 2007 (UTC).

Deletion summaries

edit

Hi, I have noticed that you often provide only a very short abbreviated deletion summary when you delete pages (like "a7" "nn-bio" and similar). Please keep in mind that most users do not know all of Wikipedia's speedy deletion criteria by heart. Please consider providing a brief "plain English" explanation without relying exclusively on "CSD jargon". Additionally linking to the relevant criteria so people can read it in full can also be useful, for example WP:CSD#A7. This will help a "layperson" better understand why something was deleted when looking at the deletion log.

Most browsers have a autocomplete or other "form filling" features that allow pre-prepared boil plate texts to be inserted into web forms with just a few keystrokes. This is useful for inserting detailed deletion summaries without having to type out the same things over and over. Please consider looking into it. Thanks. -- Longhair\talk 06:52, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Would like to appeal an article you deleted Rob Tornoe

edit

Hello, I have a helpme on my talkpage because I believe this political cartoonist, Rob Tornoe, is notable. Here is what I wrote:

How do I appeal a speedy delete? I came across an article earlier this evening (just after it was created). I considered nominating it for AfD but when I saw the quality Yahoo hits he got, I put on the talkpage to put in some good quality third party references besides the one blog and his own website. It did not appear to me this was self-published. I noticed on my watchpage the nom for Speedy Delete and went to the page and put hangon. I went to talkpage and entered the following (the article is gone but I have not closed the talkpage I editted and saved):

Talk:Rob Tornoe From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search

Non-cur speedy delete. This cartoonist gets a lot of quality hits on Yahoo's searth engine. This is a political cartoonist who seems to be noteworthy - otherwise, I would have AfD'ed the article when I first visited the page (CfA). I do not know this individual and my POV is neutral - other than I enjoy cartoons. Ronbo76 05:13, 5 January 2007 (UTC) (Please check my contribution log to confirm).

I had planned on building one reference source with a good hit I got for him, which is the first Yahoo internet search hit for Rob Tornoe cartoonist. The first hit is: AAEC - Cartoonist Profile Rob Tornoe. That page, which is the The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists with a date of 2005. It has a good pic of him and much of the info that was in his article Rob tornoe (built with a "small T".

Trust me: if I had even a doubt about this cartoonist, I would have AfD'ed the article. Take a look at the top of my Talkpage and userpage if you have any doubts about me. Someone was too quick on the Speedy Delete as it came after I put the hangon and finished the article talkpage for the second time. How do I appeal this one???

BTW in the type it took to type in this the talkpage in the preview window went red indicating it got deleted too. I still have that window open (as posted above). Please help me as this guy seems deserving of an entry. Ronbo76 05:28, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Would you please reconsider? Ronbo76 05:40, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

You apparently deleted File:Kittinger-jump2.jpg. The deletion summary: deleted "Image:Kittinger-jump2.jpg" (I8) is pretty meaningless to me. Where can I find the decoding table? Deleted via Expired Prod?

edit

I just noticed a page about our company JN Productions has been deleted via Expired Prod? The page has been on the Wikipedia for well over a year (maybe longer). I was hoping to get a more through explanation why the page was deleted? Did someone maliciously remove the page? Jnproductions 05:39, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please see WP:PROD regarding the proposed deletion system. Thanks Naconkantari 05:51, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I would advise to give a more descriptive deltion summary (e.g. "Expired Prod: A non notable company. Fails WP:CORP. Most likely created as an advert by user jnproductions. Note they did not create the games, just put them on to are one DVD.") as this is the only piece of information non-admins can get about a deleted article. —Ruud 12:58, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I provide a link to the WP:PROD page. As I go through the category rather quickly, I don't have time to provide a personal message for each one. Naconkantari
WP:PROD only explains what PROD is, not why a certain article was proposed for deletion. I usually copy the reason for the from the prod tag itself. This only takes a few second, which is nothing compared to the time it takes to asses if the article really is a non-controversial deletion candidate (this step is quite an important step of the proposed deletion process), to check if the article really has been up for proposed deletion for several days and was not vandalizes, hasn't been VfD, AfD or Prodded before and to see which articles link to the article being deleted. To be honest, your response worries me. —Ruud 22:39, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

IPs in the UAE still blocked

edit

Hello Nacontari, You appear to be reading this page so presumably you read the previous message about blocking of IPs in the UAE. They're still blocked though and it's not clear why. As mentioned previously, internet users in the UAE have no legal choice apart from using proxy provided by the ISP here. Please could you not block UAE IPs. Thank you.

"Your account or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by Naconkantari for the following reason (see our blocking policy):

This IP address has been blocked because it is believed to be an open proxy or zombie computer. To prevent abuse, editing from these proxies is currently prohibited. If your ISP has misconfigured their proxy, you can try bypassing it by logging into Wikimedia's secure gateway at https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/. For more information about open proxies and what you can do, please see the WikiProject on open proxies. (Multi-RBL lookup • VCN proxycheck)

Your IP address is 213.42.2.21."

11:52, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

I unblocked the IP, I don't think Wikipedia can use another appearance in the media, because we again blocked an entire country. If you believe this really is being abuse as an open proxy (in the sense that people from outside the UAE can edit using this address) you should probably raise this on [[WP:AN}] as this address has already been blocked and unblocked for (not) being an open proxy several times now. Cheers, —Ruud 12:49, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

First, thanks for your work to maintain this wonderful resource we all enjoy.

I recently posted a page about Bioinformatics Solutions Inc. which was removed. I think it was seen to be too commercial, promoting BSI products. Whereas my intention was simple information about the background of the company. There are articles like this for many companies, which give history of the company, and what it's known for (like Research in Motion (RIM) -- another Waterloo Ontario based company.

Perhaps you can suggest how my article might be approved?

Tales of the Questor deletion

edit

Deletion log reads: 17:46, 3 January 2007 Naconkantari (Talk | contribs) deleted "Tales of the Questor" (A7)

I haven't found the AfD log for this title, but I can't see any grounds for deletion. The comic has been running for five years, has clocked up somewhere between 300 and 400 pages and a print collection and receives almost uniformly positive reviews despite its creator's sometimes controversial rl political opinions.

I'm not quite paranoid enough to believe that politics was the reason for the article's deletion, but I am certainly paranoid enough to believe it got crapped on unfairly.

There was no deletion discussion for the page. It was speedily deleted for failing to assert notability. Please see WP:DRV for more information on restoring the page. Naconkantari 22:49, 10 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Signature problem?

edit

Er, I haven't got a specialised signature, so guarantee that I've not used templates in them. I don't know how!

That box is blank and unchecked, I just sign using either (talk • contribs) or the four tildes.

I can only think of one edit for which the time was wrong and that was because I forgot to sign and realised an hour or so afterwards. Rather than leave it unsigned I just signed it again, which unfortunately screwed up the timing. But not significantly enough I don't think to do much damage.

Please direct me to the edit concerned, and show me what I've done - I can't see anything other than what I've mentioned, and if you are going to warn me on a day when I've made more edits than any other since I registered it's common courtesy to demonstrate the incident's location, given you can hardly claim I've done it often. I don't mean to breach WP:CIVIL but that does annoy me. I don't like the idea of being warned when I've just tried to make genuine edits. And if the concern is my use of the test banner in warning users, that was never a signature I thought I was using a genuine shortcut.

Updated as I've updated it on my own talk page. I await your reply, on my page preferably thanks. Addyboy 01:44, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Games from The Legend of Zelda series

edit

You recently deleted Games from The Legend of Zelda series (R3). Can you tell me what the content of this page was? --- RockMFR 21:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Did either that page or The Legend of Zelda series games have any significant history? Were they merged into any other articles? --- RockMFR 22:47, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

spam blacklist changes (again)

edit

I have restricted the following blocks:

prv\.pl to bxava\.prv\.pl
xoomer\.alice\.it to xoomer\.alice\.it\/dynamixpro and xoomer\.alice\.it\/iokimo

Both are quite popular free homepage providers, which seem to have been linked for valid reasons as well. - Andre Engels 09:03, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Proxy

edit

modlibrary.net appears to be offering a web proxying service, e.g. modlibrary.net/proxy/index.php?q=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5kZWNsYXJhdGlvbm9maW5kZXBlbmRlbnRzLm5ldC9kb2kvcGFnZXMveHB3c2QuaHRtbA--&hl=1111101001 which redirects to a recently blacklisted site. Will this proxy allow anonymised eidting? If so it may need tracing and blocking.

Another: www.waterfordhomeschool.org/index.php?q=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5kZWNsYXJhdGlvbm9maW5kZXBlbmRlbnRzLm5ldC9kb2kvcGFnZXMveHB3YmFyYmVyYXVnLmh0bWw-&hl=1111101001

Both advertise as open proxies.

 • Update: both now on the spam blacklist, but the question of whether edits from these IPs need to be prevented remains to be answered - I strongly suspect that the answer is yes. Guy (Help!) 13:34, 17 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
