Welcome!
Hello, Myleslong/Archive 1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

More welcome and request
The above was a standard welcome. Let me welcome you personally too!
Thank you for your changes to optimization (mathematics). And one request. Would you mind adding an edit summary when you make changes? That would be very helpful for us, other people who have that article on the watchlist (think of it as of the "Subject" line in an email. Thanks! Oleg Alexandrov 00:10, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I wasn't aware that minor changes required an edit summary, but I will include edit summaries on all changes from now on. --Myles Long 17:03, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. As you will certainly notice, there are some good Wikipedians who don't bother to put an edit summary, even if it is required (and helpful). So, ultimately you will develop your own style too (and I hope it will be the right one :) Oleg Alexandrov 17:32, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Ninja Strike Force
I see from your user page that you don't much care for VfD. But, given the changes you've made to Ninja Strike Force, it would be a shame for that article to go away. --Myles Long 16:16, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
It would be a shame. Potentially encyclopedic material is being constantly deleted on VfD, sometimes without clear consensus or after an article has been significantly improved. [1] If you are just becoming intimate with VfD, I am sorry to tell you it is riddled with problems.
The biggest problem is that people incorrently cite notability and importance, or lack thereof, as a reason for deletion when in fact notability and importance are absolutely not reasons for deletion at all. Wikipedia:Importance says itself in bold: "This page is not official Wikipedia policy."
The entire concept of notability and importance is a point of view sculpted by systematic bias, and as it just so happens, the fellows who frequent VfD are outrageously biased towards science-fiction and fantasy. Subjects related to Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Pokemon, Lord of the Rings, and so on will always be kept at worst merged. Yet, somehow, this same band of folks, who I assume are mostly males in their late teens to mid twenties, are harshly discriminatory towards inherently "notable" real-world subjects like films, music groups, and even educational institutions. When this is brought up, the argument presented is that "WP:NOT consistent" even though that is not actually mentioned within WP:NOT.
Or another counter argument by deletionists is that "WP:NOT a general knowledge base", but when referred back to the countless number of stubs on the above-mentioned sci-fi articles we are returned back to "WP:NOT consistent". Most of these fallacious arguments are counter to the wishes of the Wikipedia founder, Jimbo Wales, who said, and I quote: "It is our goal to put the sum of all human knowledge in the form of an encyclopedia in the hands of every single person on the planet for free," during an interview with the Washington Post. [2]
After growing tired of seeing school article after school article deleted, I created the Schoolwatch programme in an effort to improve school related articles. This was met with much hostility by deletionists trolls who atrociously attempted to subvert the programme by having it deleted, merged, moved, redirected, or derailed from its purpose. Again, a quote was cited by Jimbo Wales made on a mailing list where he said in response to a message titled Partial solution to rampant deletionism: "if someone wants to write an article about their high school, we should relax and accomodate them, even if we wish they wouldn't do it. And that's true *even if* we should react differently if someone comes in and starts mass-adding articles on every high school in the world." [3]
And again, spurious claims were made by deletionist trolls that the quote was being taken out of context, even though the entire message body is clearly cited for all to read. It is really unfortunate that so much valuable time that could otherwise be spent improving Wikipedia articles is lost here fighting tooth and nail to keep what should obviously be important information of a historical interest. In the interest of this project, we should organically expand and invest, not suppress. Where do we go next? --GRider\talk 17:34, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
In response to your comments, I completely agree. I am just now becoming acquainted with VfD, and I find it to be a biased process, as you have pointed out. Your Schoolwatch programme is pretty interesting; I'll definitely have to keep it on my radar. I completely agree that most schools deserve an article...I see that what "WP:NOT" is often cited in the VfD debates. These people seem pretty sure about what Wikipedia is not, but they often seem to forget what Wikipedia is: a community project. Also, those who cite it seem to forget the first point on that page, "WP:NOT paper". Since it's not paper, it can afford to be (and should definitely be) more inclusionary than a paper encyclopedia. Sorry this reply is disjointed.
In the interest of this project, we should organically expand and invest, not suppress. Where do we go next? I completely agree. We should expand articles. If we find a sub-par article that could have merit, why delete it? Why not add to it? Or at least request that it be added to by a more knowledgeable person?
With regard to Ninja Strike Force, could you please vote to keep it? There's a lack of a consensus at this point, but "delete" seems to have a plurality. Is that enough to make it be deleted? Who knows? What constitutes a "win" in VfD seems to be debatable. --Myles Long 18:41, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Just so you know, GRider is prohibited to edit VfD pages and just returned from 2-week ban for violating that. Sad, but true. I accidentally had this page on watchlist and noticed that little discussion. Well, at least NSF has one more keep vote :) Grue 19:10, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ahh, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. It seems unfair to keep someone from participating in VfD just because s/he doesn't like it and/or always votes "Keep," but whatever, there's probably more to it than that. None of my business. --Myles Long 20:22, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
One of the convenient aspects of a wiki is that just about everything happens in public. Archives of the two requests for comment on GRider's behaviour, as well as the decision of the arbitration committee are easily available. (First RfC, second RfC, arbitration decision.) GRider has been banned from participation in VfD because he was deliberately disrupting the process there. He wanted to change the deletion policy, but instead of using Wikipedia's usual mechanisms (like the Village Pump or even Wikipedia Talk:Deletion policy), he made more than two hundred VfD nominations to try to make a point. There are a number of Wikipedians who always (or nearly always) vote to keep articles on VfD, and they are free to do so as long as they do not engage in deliberately disruptive behaviour.
As they say, there is no (deletionist) cabal. :) I hope GRider continues to make positive, constructive additions to Wikipedia's articles—VfD is a very small part of what we do here. Hope that clarifies things a bit. --TenOfAllTrades | Talk 20:57, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi. I see that you have edited the style of Dead Kennedys albums (you made them italic).....WHY ? I like how the BOLD looks. In my opinion it looks better cand you can read them...better, cos they are bold.

Whatever that Dead = Dead was supposed to be, they did it to Mel Blanc also. I don't know what it is. I didn't see it in the actual article. Just FYI in case you want to fix Mel Blanc too. Wahkeenah03:40, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Fine, I'll make no more template additions to countries, despite the fact that it facilitates finding related articles. --Myles Long01:20, 29 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Hey, Texan.
Of that list I just went down and overhauled, you and two otherusers were the only (active) Texans I could imagine being interested in getting the ball for a Texan Collaboration of the Month rolling. Interested? Shem 04:55, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan. Though, "Collaboration of the Month" might be better. Heh. But yeah, I'll help out if I can. --Myles Long 14:38, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Lapse
The sentence is a bit overcomplicated. It's hard to tell what negatives apply by the time you read over to "lapse". -- Cyrius|✎ 23:38, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hi
I noticed that you have Image:0wned.gif on your user page. You might consider switching to Image:example.jpg
According to southwest.com, you can still book flights out of IAH. Also, according to the airport's site [5], Southwest still flys in and out of IAH. Unless this has changed in the last few days and neither entity has updated its website, you are incorrect. --Myles Long16:47, 11 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
That link isn't on southwest.com, so it's really irrelevant to your point. However, I see that you're correct when I try to go to "reservations" rather than "schedule" on southwest.com (schedule shows IAH as well as Hobby, whereas reservations shows only IAH). --Myles Long16:52, 11 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
First off thank you. I only read a bit of your page but I do like what I have seen, I, along with a whole office here, have tried to dignify the Anne Rice article a little over the last couple days including the date of her child's death (which just got reverted back again to 6 by the way by the same fool) ...well though it seems to be a silly war of pride at this point I did want to thank you for noticing and adding what you did. The FYI is that there was no vandalism. Some Users should not need to log on, sign up or anything else in order to try and better an article. That was the point. To correct something to see if it would be appreciated given the politics here. No is the answer. Again just see the age (Anne Rice's child) to notice this. Regardless of all I just wanted you to know and to thank you. C.M. and staff.
Applauds the very dignified Myleslong ...thank-you
Dear Myleslong, as part of a team that works together at an office (studio) we're just now amazingly impressed with the Anne Rice contribution (from yourself) and the dignity shown over a needed adjustment. What a treat that the Anne Rice article can be handled by someone such as yourself. A dignified well versed individual. This is indeed a most pleasant (amazing at this point even) welcomed surprised. Many thanks for this alone. C.M. and staff.
Thanks!

Hi. Just noticed you editing this article. Virtually every article related to slasher movies is in dire shape, and I've embarked on a mission to clean them up. If you're interested (or if you think you can help in any way), please leave a message an my talk page. Thanks!--SeanJelly Baby?22:38, 7 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Just wanted to make sure you have the ongoing Back Orifice peer review in your watchlist. I'm planning to have a peer review on Back Orifice 2000 article too, but only after this one has ended. This one may reveal problems that can be fixed in the other one too, before having people review it. --Easyas12c18:53, 13 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, just wanted to thank you for voting on my RFA, which went through with a count of (58/0/1), far better than I'd expected. I intend to take things slowly and start using the extra abilities gradually, but if there's anything I can do just leave a message. Cheers, CTOAGN (talk) 13:54, 7 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
