Chemung County and Elmira New York articles

Hello Mwanner. I posted a response to your thoughts on the Chamber of Commerce issue on the Chemung County Talk page.

I also wanted to comment on your removal of the content from www.cityofelmira.net on the Elmira, New York article. I did not add the original content, but I did approve the use of the material. I am the Webmaster of the City of Elmira and developed the content for the city website. As the original author, I have given permission for the republication of this information on Wikipedia. I do think the information is useful, but can understand how some may feel it bogs down the article. This is why I did not add the content back to the Elmira, New York article. So my point is - if the information has been removed because of the copyright violation, then there is none and if I need to do something to explicity permit the use of the info, then I can. If the info was removed to streamline the article, then I have no objection to its removal.

Plattsburgh NY

Why did you delete the link to PARC? Wikipedia uses many commercial links and its far more important than, say, the plattsburgh volunteer fire department. Ah, I see your point, but its the only webpage (a sad excuse for one, I know) for PARC and does have something to add to the modern history of the town.. At least more than the plattsburgh volunteer fire department's page does. Strangely the PARC entry (more than a mini-stub) doesn't link to it.. I'll check to see if people had the same reservations you did. I'll do a bit of searching around and thinking on this one before putting it or a better example up. "Crazy as a pet raccoon"

(written by Mwanner on DavidOaks' talkpage) A proverb is "a saying popularly known and repeated, which expresses a truth, based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity." "Crazy as a pet raccoon" gets all of 32 google hits, almost entirely from sources such as blogs, forums, etc. And what is the "practical experience of humanity" encoded in the saying? Compare the roughly 100,000 hits for "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" or "a stitch in time saves nine." And given that this is an encyclopedia, why is that phrase preferable to simply saying that raccoons, like other wild animals, don't generally make good pets, as suggested by the laws against ownership in many states? -- Mwanner | Talk 22:45, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi Mwanner. Yes, you'd expect the majority of hits to come from informal sites -- after all, the point is to demonstrate that the phrase is proverbial. You get a lot more hits if you use "as a pet coon;" as is regularly seen in proverbs, there's structural substitution at the phrase-level, so that the attribute is usually "crazy" but also "lazy;" I have heard "mean," but it doesn't appear on the web. "Pet coon" may be substituted for other animals with either metrical similarity or at least isochrony in pronunciation (e.g., "shit-house rat") -- still preserving the basic trope of something wild in a domestic environment. Now, this is just a talk-page explanation, and doesn't belong in the main article (where it would be original research; I'm a folklorist, but I haven't published anything on this particular phrase, nor am I aware that anyne else has). The phrase is part of the lore of the raccoon, which seems to me is proper to an ancyclopedia article. As a comparison, is the identification of snakes with the Judeaeo Christian devil proper? My apologies for lecturing to you on the meaning of "proverb"! By all means, restore it to the article. I would, however, suggest that it might be better as it's own section, under something like "Expressions using 'Raccoon'", and trotting out your original research-- I think the prohibition on OR has more to do with extreme and/or controversial issues than with smallish, non-controversial points within an article. (I could be wrong, of course, and someone could come along and delete it, but I doubt it. Doing a whole article on it without sources probably would not work out, though.) In any case, I think the whole lazy/crazy/mean spectrum is interesting in itself, whereas its less interesting used to suggest that keeping pet raccoons is unwise. They are different, but related. The Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium was created by Dr. Trudeau; it was a single institution, though comprised of separate cottages on a single campus. The Cure Cottages of Saranac Lake were created apart from the sanitorium largely to deal with the large numbers of health-seekers who flocked to Saranac Lake as a result of Trudeau's fame. Some were simply additions to existing houses, some were built from the ground up; they were built by local residents, by speculators, by physicians-- they were not an institution, but a phenomenon.

The article did say that, indirectly, in the second paragraph of the "Beginnings" section, but by then one could be forgiven for thinking there was an institutional structure involved. RHP lists in NY

Hey, i am thrilled that you are fixing up various county lists of RHPs in NY. As tallied in a table now at List of RHPs in NY, there are about 5000 RHPs in the state with county lists ranging from having only 13 or so up to 503 in New York County. So far List of Registered Historic Places in Franklin County, New York, which you fixed up, is the biggest one fixed up enough to justify dropping the previous list entries. Fixing them up that way is taking a lot of effort, checking to see if all the previous list entries' pipelinks are copied, and checking whether all other info in the previous lists is fully captured without introducing new errors. Great that you've gone far with Essex, too. I'm not completely sure whether Delaware and Hudson Depot-Ticonderoga is a legitimate entry for List of Registered Historic Places in Essex County, New York, because it was not part of the Elkman-county-table-generator output (based on NRIS) and I can't find it by any search within NRIS itself. Elkman's generator is not working right now so i can't check it there right now. I do see the original entry for it was added to the page by this edit by DTD. And I see it is listed in NRHP.COM's Essex county list, which was based on NRIS as of a certain date (probably the source for DTD, as NRHP.COM was used a lot back then). Could it have been delisted? Perhaps I should add this to the anomalies page, wp:NRIS info issues?

About renumbering, it is Sanfranman59 who has a semi-automated way to do renumbering apparently, and he has offered to do any list-article needing it.

About low readership numbers, well, 58 hits back in May was low. Or I don't know if they are that low; 58 visits by persons interested in a relatively obscure county's historic sites, when there was not much material available, might not be so bad. List of NHLs in NY got 2820 hits that month. With more development, and more links in, yes, there will be some more hits per month, but these will never be high readership. Actually i am more with you about keeping it in. You linked to the Port Henry depot document rather than the Ticonderoga one, but i see the Ticonderoga depot document at NYS here. This is a lot of cumulative evidence that it is an NRHP, and there is little evidence that it is not. It seems the anomaly is in the Elkman-county-table-generator, to be investigated. I created semi-shortcut List of RHPs in Franklin for that, just now. In Franklin, it looks like you have 51 or so photos of the 68 that would be required to make it one of wp:NRHP's fully illustrated lists. I look forward to its addition to the honor roll at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#List of fully illustrated NRHP lists.... :) I'm sure there are still some difficult-to-access places on the Franklin list, but at least there are no undisclosed-location archeological sites. Well, odds are you'll get to Malone, and you'll canoe to that camp on a lake, before anyone else does. :) Yes, i noticed your adding the footnotes. That's a fine way to go, I guess, although it potentially creates an overwhelming amount of footnotes for the list-article. Those footnotes should definitely appear in the individual articles about the places, when they are created, of course. In my view, if there is an article on the individual place already, with such a footnote, then you don't need to footnote the individual summary in the list-article. The summary is supported by the actual article, which is well supported. You could provide a footnote to the column title, explaining that the source for the summaries is the various NRHP documents, all available at the New York State website that you can link. That was my tactic for List of NHLs in NY, anyhow. See its footnote #4 on the corresponding column-title pointing to the general availability of NHL webpages, but not citing each one. That tactic has not been contested in the ongoing Featured Article review. Anyhow, adding the footnotes as you are doing is fine also and is especially helpful for the places that do not yet have articles. doncram (talk) 00:59, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Neither List of RHPs in Essex nor List of RHPs in Franklin is too big to be a list on its own for reasons of hitting 100k, they are far from that. DanTD and perhaps others are pointing out that List of Registered Historic Places in Suffolk County, New York is overly big, but it has 265 or so RHPs and is 82k or so, which loads slowly for some internet connections. But others like Daniel Case are preferring to split off towns like Poughkeepsie and Yonkers from their county lists, for other reasons that i don't entirely understand. And now that you point it out, i count about 66(?) Saranac Lake ones in the two counties, i think more than in either Poughkeepsie or Yonkers. Those could certainly be put aside in a separate list if you think that would be better. Perhaps it is weird to have Saranac Lake split into two county lists. About articles for cure cottages, they can be really short articles, just holding the individual NRHP infoboxes and a link to the separate nomination document for each one, and one or two sentences. I think that would be better than having red-links. Or, i suppose you could just link from the list-article of RHPs to a section for each one, or for groups of them, in the article on cure cottages. They don't have to be separate articles, although then you aren't using the available infoboxes and references, but that is okay, too. I think whichever way you want to go, as long it provides a finished effect without red-links, is probably okay. doncram (talk) 07:41, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Multiple county for New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District

Good catch, thanks for pointing it out. You've found another NRIS error: NRIS should identify it in each of the 6 counties, but apparently does not, so the Elkman-generated table only places it in one as well. There are many other multiple county historic districts, such as the Delaware and Hudson Canal, Adirondack Park, and Palisades Interstate Park all in New York State and all NHLs. For these, NRIS lists all the counties and the corresponding Elkman-generated tables catch them all, I believe. See how those are covered in List of NHLs in NY.

I just recorded the NRIS issue for this, crediting you, at wp:NRIS info issues#identified in another county; feel free to modify/expand there. That's to raise with the National Register eventually along with other issues.

For the wikipedia, can you please go ahead and add the needed row into each of the other 5 county tables? Or let me know and i will. You don't have to renumber the tables affected if you don't want to, you can just insert at 32.5 or whatever inbetween number.

About which coordinate to show, well, it is not really wrong to show the given Hamilton county coordinate for the railroad, in the other county tables. It clarifies for readers that the district runs out of the other county, certainly, not a bad thing. I haven't much come across this coordinates issue before, about which coordinates to show in each county, as we are only now really getting into the mapping and checking coordinates. The one similar coordinates situation that i handled recently was for Riverside Park and Drive district that runs from 72nd St to 129th St in NYC, hence appears in both List of Registered Historic Places in Manhattan from 59th to 110th Streets and List of Registered Historic Places in Manhattan above 110th Street. It doesn't bother me that the coords given in both are for a point below 110th Street. I do mention that the district runs above (below) 110th street in the draft description for the below (above) one in the tables. But on the other hand, those two articles are not developed as far as yours is.

coordinates off systematically

See User talk:Doncram#pre-1986 NRIS coordinates might be NAD27 instead of WGS84/NAD83, where LeheckaG explains what is going on. I had informed him that many NRIS coordinates were obtained originally by tracing out the locations of places on USGS quadrant maps. In Virginia and some other state files the quadrant maps with the tracings are included in the scanned NRHP nomination documents. He knew that the old quadrant maps themselves are off slightly relative to the current GPS system, which explains a drift. Bad Messages To Me All Of A Sudden

Today I have received these three messages (below). I have only ever made 2 edits. One was a date of an ancestor of mine. Something like 1518 I changed to 1581. And one other about an actor on Gilligan's Island (I think). A couple years ago. Since I am on Dial-Up I doubt my cats could have done all this editing by sitting on my keyboard while I was out of the room. Also, since I am on Dial-Up, I don't have time to go around the system and learn how to send this message to you properly. And I have to also contact the other two. I have never received a message from WIKI before. Now in one day I have three!!! I don't know anything about Progesterone.

Wilderness Diarrhea Getting Killed

Dunno, but from some of your Wikipedia work, it seems remotely possible you'd be interested in this. Wilderness Diarrhea is getting merged into Travelers Diarrhea by a couple of zealots who seem to have no concept of outdoor interests.

I get around a lot in the outdoors and rarely treat water, but WD article had some good stuff.

After a couple of weeks of calm discussion, I went ballistic and no longer want to participate. Rational voices might help.

These guys have irrationally convinced themselves that WD isn't a legitimate topic for a Wikipedia article.

I've pointed out several bomb-proof arguements to no avail. I'd say the strongest is the vast number of published articles that discuss WD as a separate concern from TD. They are both environmental health topics, and obviously the context of each are far different.

I can't exactly remember why that happened. The roof is predominantly a purplish color, and tweaking around the levels and whatnot tended to ruin that so I probably decided to keep it. Perhaps I should put one together with layers and get rid of the noise as well (If I could do that, maybe we're looking at a possible FP candidate since it's an unusual enough building and a rather striking image). Concern at the Village Pump

I'm concerned about your remarks[1] [2] at WP:Village pump (policy). Please review WP:BITE and WP:AGF and remember how you felt when you were new to wikipedia, and try to keep this in mind when dealing with "spammers" (which he will no doubt interpret as name calling, and not the way you intended). Its better to be wrong 100 times in a row (by assuming good faith) than to singly prevent a newbie from becoming an editor. Hope you'll check out the guidelines and take this opportunity to grow stronger as a wikipedian. I have reviewed your edit history and you have done great work in preventing spam and fixing vandalism, but it may have affected your judgment in dealing with Mike Brieding. National Register of Historic Places listings in New York

Thanks for adding pics to National Register of Historic Places listings in New York. I went to delete the row numbers, per your suggestion, but then I see/recall that Dutchess, Manhattan, and other counties are subdivided so there are rows 14.1, 14.2, etc. The numbering sorts them into that. There needs to be some more complicated format used so that the Dutchess ones stay together and/or you can get back to that, if you sort by count. Need to find some format examples from some wp:FL Featured Lists, perhaps.

Did you notice this List of RHPs in NY is being discussed somewhat at wt:NRHP? Either way, I appreciate your trying to make it look better. Do let's improve it. Cabinet Making

I saw you added a link to mission furniture and it got me inspired to add more links to other articles. I noticed that many of the styles of design that I have added to the article do not have their own articles or are stubs. (I think a stub is an article that is just begining). I am going to take a stab at making mission furniture into an article at some point. I think I want to get a little more comfortable first. I tried an article before and someone re-directed is. Deland FL

Hello. Could you please explain why you deleted the item that I added regarding the filming of the movie Ghost Story on the campus of Stetson University. I went back to add a link to that movie's page and the entry was already gone. In the paragraph above where my entry was there is a very similar entry about an HBO series also being filmed on campus. Okay. If you're confident that it's from before 1923 (I didn't feel I could guess the date for sure myself), please retag it as {{PD-US}}. Bridges, rivers and parents

Yeah, I noticed some of your edits in that direction. As far as bridges go, it's policy at the bridges project to use both a parent state-level cat and a lower-level cat. See WP:BRIDGES#Categorization. The idea is to make the categories easier to navigate for (I guess) someone not familiar with the state in question and its counties (I mean, I can say without reservation that the Mackinac Bridge is in Michigan but I don't know which two counties it connects without clicking on the article).

As for rivers, I don't know why. Perhaps someone just assumed it carried over from WP:BRIDGES. Certainly nothing on the project page supports that. I suppose it also comports with the rationale at WP:SUBCAT#When to duplicate. Daniel Case (talk) 17:08, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Well, to me, this passage — "For example: all the bridges in Category:Toll bridges in New York and Category:Bridges in New York City will be included in Category:Bridges in New York" — suggests that it would apply to county-level bridge cats in NY as well (although I'm not sure they ever envisioned anything other than an NYC subcat being created at that time). After repeated vandalism, I tried to correct it, only to have it vandalized again and again. I was hoping that this would be the end of it, but now I see you have truncated it to next to nothing. I removed the bulk of the text from Michael Rosenblum because it had been copied directly from two websites: http://www.rosenblumtv.com/biography.shtml and http://www.zoominfo.com/people/Rosenblum_Michael_15914305.aspx; as this appears to be copyrighted material, it is a violation of that copyright for it to appear on Wikipedia. To be used verbatim, it would need to be released under a free license. your copyright question

I see that you are into Adirondack - cool! My sister lives there. You asked about copyright. Of course, you realize that your question calls for the legal opinion of a qualified intellectal property lawyer. Since you asked me, it seems you were unable to resolve your question by reading the relevant Wikipedia articles. All I could add to that would be this: the whole idea of copyright is the right of a creator to control what happens to his work. It isn't about money, so it's not correct to assume that something can be used for free if it was found for free on the Internet, or it was open for public display. In your situation, the creator of the work allowed an organization to use a photo for free, but you did not say that the creator gave all rights to the organization. If the organization goes outside the scope of the permission (the "license"), it's asking for trouble. A written agreement would have clarified things, of course, but the fact that the agreement was oral does not give the organization free rein to change the agreement and do whatever it wants with the photo. Now, if you want to know what would happen in court, if push came to shove, you have to talk to a lawyer. I have no idea what courts these days would do, which is of course the ultimate question. We can sit in our armchairs all day and agree about what the law says or does not say, and that organization is free to agree or disagree. But if the creator of the photo wants to stop them from throwing the photo around, and they won't listen to reason, then there's no option but to see what teeth can be put into the discussion. And for that, you need a lawyer, and not just someone like me who has been out of the business for years. I hope this helps you, but if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
