Avoiding damage by bots

edit

There are (or were? about a year ago) some (or at least one) bot(s) running on en.Wikipedia that didn't understand the concept of "a template for conveniently copying/pasting references", and got rid of these blindly. I used to use html comments, and after discussing with the bot owners, accepted to switch to {{void}} instead, since the bots (or at least that bot) knew how to ignore {{void}} content. I can search for the discussions if you really want to see them... Boud (talk) 14:16, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for contacting me about this. Comments are (as you were originally doing) the technically correct way of adding such editing helpers. Any bot whose job is to parse templates is incorrectly programmed if it also parses what happen to look like templates in comments. If the bot's job is to remove "irrelevant" comments, then the author must update a whitelist to support your usage.
That said, I don't want to distract from the important work of adding reliably sourced content to these articles. I use a "little script" to help me prepare some edits (generally, any with "nn×" appearing in the edit summary, which I make and check manually and individually) and I will update that to skip {{void}} and {{^}}. I don't understand why the bot owner made you use these, they are more difficult to parse because it is necessary to parse what is being ignored in order to find the correct terminating '}}'. I've now updated the script and it preserves content delimited by void or ^. --Mirokado (talk) 00:08, 10 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks. :) I've put a note to myself and if I get back to it, will put you and the bot owner into contact so that you two can present your arguments about what policies are best. Boud (talk) 22:21, 12 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ukraine

April songs

Ukraine day today: Maks Levin DYK, expanding Kyiv Symphony Orchestra (have tickets), and creating Anthony Robin Schneider, the bass who could be heard opening the singing in Beethoven's Ninth twice on 10 March 2022, live in Frankfurt, Germany, and recorded in Auckland, New Zealand, singing "Freiheit!" (freedom) instead of "Freude" (joy), in a tradition started after the Fall of the Wall. In case of interest. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:30, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

... now you can listen to what I heard live yesterday: Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, Luigi Gaggero & Diana Tishchenko (violin) / Kulturpalast Dresden (25 April 2022 on YouTube (that's 25 April in Dresden, a different violinist, but the same program) - ours pictured here - dove sono as encore --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:54, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Nine years, wow! I'm taking a while off, but hope to be back when I have time again. In the mean time, I wish you good health and more good concerts, they seem to be picking up again, at least for the summer. -- Mirokado (talk) 21:18, 30 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! - I like my talk today (actually mostly from 29 May - I took the title pic), enjoy the music, two related videos worth watching! For concerts heard and planned, see here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:10, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Always precious

Ten years ago, you were found precious. That's what you are, always. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:54, 28 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Gerda. This year your message has coincided with a very late start to real spring weather, so I have at least two reasons to be smiling. -- Mirokado (talk) 21:06, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Article length bar

edit

Hi, Mirokado. I'm writing to tell you about new template {{Article length bar}} ({{Albar}} ). I found you because of your earlier use of the template {{Article length rating}} (alias {{Alr}}). I had an application which also needed a graphic for article length, but I found Alr opaque in its symbology, and also it tops out at 20kb, which I think of as start-class, or just past stub; that is way too early for my purpose. My use case is more about checking whether an article is getting close to being too big and approaching the threshold for splitting, or already exceeding it, while Alr appears to be better for measuring stubs. Anyway, don't know if you stopped using Alr because you no longer had a need for it, or you gave up on it because it didn't really work for you, either.

The new {{Albar}} is very configurable, you can use it in default mode to get {{Albar|Jean Sibelius}} 122k, for example. Here's France , Germany , and Italy rendered as sparklines. Lots more configurability, and if you still have a need for a graphic length symbol, I'd love to see your applications for it. It's still new, and I'm still thinking of other enhancements (including a prose-words mode: long-term, and not simple) and if you have any wish-list items for it, please add them to the template talk page.
