Sometimes people think they can beat RC patrol; sometimes, that's when we need to illustrate decisively that this isn't the case. ;) Good thing they haven't come back in such force, though. – Luna Santin (talk) 09:29, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Serious glitches in MWT

Hi

I was RC-patrolling with MWT today. I ran into several problems, all of which have happened before -

  • Warning 3 vandals on their talkpages simeultanously causes the program to crash
  • Loading of larger pages takes too long and slows down the program, eventually causing it to exit
  • I just had a very embarassing incident in which a valid contributor has been warned by MWT, using my username. I have gone through all my contributions upto March 2nd, and theres nothing of the sort there.

It goes like this - MWT warned IP 87.194.73.175 about unconstructive edits to Adriaen van der Werff. But I don't remember going through the article, nor does the history show any reverts by me. This probably points to a bug in the program, and a serious one at that.

The entire conversation can be traced on User talk:Xcentaur and User talk:87.194.73.175.

I've been using MWT heavily in March now, and its a hell of a lot better than any other program there. You've done a great job!

I'd appreciate if you got back to me about this problem,

Thanks xC | 13:37, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

  • The first is a known problem (If the form for selecting a warning is already showing, then it cannot be opened again to warn another user) - I'm hoping to make a workaround to this for the next release.
  • The second bug I'm not sure about. After reverting an edit, it waits for the whole page (including images, etc) to load before it warns the user, which can take a while for long pages, though I'm not sure why this would make the program exit. Anyway, it should be able to be speed up a lot if I move some code around, I'll be sure to do that also.
  • Now, the third one I haven't run into before, but I have a feeling I may know what's causing it (it loads a page, and, thinking that it has just reverted something, goes to warn the user). If this is the case, then this will also be an easy fix.
I hope this helps, and I apologise for any trouble these bugs have caused you :) --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 07:37, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Ah, that would explain it. Alright, I'm going to still continue using it, although at a slower pace, I guess. Cheers! xC | 12:08, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

In the public domain

Hi Michael,

Thanks very much for notifying me of the article in The Age, March 1st 2007. Indeed I was not aware of it at all (not living in Melbourne or making a habit of reading The Age).

I have however seen Nick Miller's byline before, I think he used to work at The West Australian (which I have, regrettably, read on some occasions). His miniature biography of me is quite interesting, though skewed by my relatively few Wikipedia edits - he could easily have found out as much or more about me through a Google search for my name.

So this "life in the public domain" is not something I am particularly troubled about I don't think, but it certainly is interesting to hear about where these things can crop up.

LAME!

Looks like your "MWT" software reverted the edits I made to the Tom Leykis entry, claiming it was 'vandalism' even though the revisions were fully commented. If you take a look at the edit history, you'll see that I actually cleaned up the page by combining similar sections and rewriting awkward prose. I object to your use of automated software to make such determinations, as I think it undoes legitimate contributions and undermines people's attempts to improve a page. I also object to Wikipedia allowing automated software to undo legitimate edits without human review. Your software must be pretty stupid and unreliable. It is definitely not an asset to the Wikipedia community, as it has a too-high margin of error.

First up, MWT is not a bot, all edits are reviewed by a human before they are reverted. The person who reverted you in this case was not me, but another editor, which you have also notified it seems. Thirdly, I'd encourage you to assume good faith on the part of our anti-vandalism crew, we are only human, and will make mistakes. Cheers and have a good evening. (or morning, maybe even afternoon wherever you are in the world) --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 11:42, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I wont go into the details of it, but I have set an invite exception on your nickname 'PullToOpen' now. You should now be able to join/part as you please. To prevent impersonation (other users changing nicks to 'PullToOpen' to gain access) - It would be a good idea to apply for a cloak whenever you have time. --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 21:50, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Protecting certain pages on wikipedia

Hello, my name is Ivan. And i was wondering is it allowed for me to put my biography or profile, my accomplishments and other facts on wikipedia

Bold textThis is all hypothetical

No personal or private information will be posted

And if it is possible to post such a page then is it possible to protect it so that no one but me can edit it.

Thank you —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.99.155.62 (talk) 17:51, 17 March 2007 (UTC).

I don't think that Wikipedia is the place for this. First up, nobody on Wikipedia owns an article, so protecting it from editing by others simply wont happen. Second of all, Wikipedia discourages writing about yourself. Thirdly, there are a number of notability and article sourcing guidelines you might want to look at. I think what you're after is a free web host (list), where you can write about yourself, where there aren't notability guidelines, and where you are the only person who can edit the pages. I hope this answers your question. --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 21:59, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

About your MWT

Can you add AIV reporting to your MWT? Or, could it use the SeaMonkey rendering engine? ffm t 00:49, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

I will add an AIV reporting function when I have some time. There are a whole bunch of reasons why changing the rendering engine isn't possible. If you take a look at [4][5], which applies to MWT also. (note that 'gecko' is the rendering engine used in Mozilla browsers) --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 09:46, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

You're a sysop!

Hi, MichaelBillington/Archive5, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop!

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on articles for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=
PS Please add you name to WP:LA!

Sorry about that. this was the edit which I came across on RC patrol. Spotting that it was at the top of the external links list, that the link had banner ads, in addition to Google text-ads, and that the user who added it had a contributions page filled with external link additions, it seemed to me logical to revert them. Now that I'm aware of the discussion (and I probably should have checked the talk page first), I will self-revert and discuss there. Happy editing, and again, sorry for the trouble. --Michael Billington (talk) 07:05, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
No problem; I just wanted to ensure that there's a consistent administrative position (in terms of a discussion being facilitated), for better or worse. We should probably refrain from reverting back and forth until the discussion is concluded. I don't have a strong opinion on the matter, incidentally, I, as well, just noticed the changes to a few articles on my watchlist and went from there. Thanks. And congrats on the recent RfA. Fifth Melbourne meetup

The fifth meetup of Melbourne Wikipedians is being planned as a breakfast meeting in the city with Jimbo Wales (at a venue to be arranged) on Friday, 27 April 2007.

Jimbo has proposed breakfast as the one real window of opportunity during his tightly scheduled stay in Melbourne. Tbe precise time has to be sorted out with Jimbo, but the arrangements for the equivalent Adelaide meetup a few days before may give a good idea.

Feel free to edit the relevant page in any way that might be helpful. I feel like a bit of an interloper, not having attended previous meetups. If there's anything you can do to help, I'll be grateful. Please think about whether you'll be able to make it, assuming the arrangements are similar to those Adelaide is adopting (i.e. a block of time with people being fairly free to arrive when it suits them). Some indication on the page of your possible participation would be really helpful. Metamagician3000 06:28, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

How dare you?!

I can forgive many things, but how dare you write such disgusting four letter words on my talk page?! I only allow "go Hawks" to be written in my userspace! Please respect this in future! Sarah 12:04, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Such brutal birds and terrible food shall always be placed on a second level behind the most gracious bird of the lot :) Daniel Bryant 12:09, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Oh, you wait Bryant. This year were taking it all back. (If you are not from Australia, and the above section has confused the Hell out of you, I advise putting a brown paper bag over your head and lying on the floor.) Cheers! Dfrg.msc 05:49, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Now, as if anyone needed convincing that Collingwood is unbeatable... let's take a look at what's gone on today: The Pies won, the Swans lost and the Hawks got demolished. I predict that the same will happen next round. --Michael Billington (talk) 14:03, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Sorry Michael but what was that you were saying? I can't hear you! Colliwobbles are what now, UNBEATABLE?? And the Hawks would be DEMOLISHED in round two? I hope you aren't a betting man because none of your predictions for round two worked out! I don't mean to rub salt in your wounds, but you know that the Colliwobbles are below the Hawks and the Swans on the ladder?! ;D Sarah 00:31, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
It's early days yet... We'll see come round 13 what the hawks are really made of. And thanks to you, the wiki has one more redirect to add to its collection: Colliwobbles. --Michael Billington (talk) 01:19, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

RfA

Congrats! You'll be a fine admin - if you ever need any help with your superstrength admin tools, drop me a line :) Grutness...wha? 00:29, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

If sitting infront of a CRT for this long gives me super strength... then I wonder what benefits some radioactive waste may carry? I may have found a fast track to taking over the world, thank you for helping my evil plans to slide into place. Oh um... if I need anything, I know who to bug. Cheers. --Michael Billington (talk) 14:47, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, to elaborate on my comments about your interesting wardrobe choice, if I can recall correctly, you were wearing a collared black thing, with red stripes that came up to your neck. I understand you were in Tokyo at the time, but Australian audiences are more accustomed to a singlet and thongs combo. People on television, in Australia are frequently naked from the waist down. No problem Michael! I know you'll use them well. Cheers! Dfrg.msc 07:15, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
