Hello, Megb64, and welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created, such as Draft:Sterling C. Quinlan, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's content policies and may not be retained. In short, the topic of an article must be notable and have already been the subject of publication by reliable and independent sources.

Please review Your first article for an overview of the article creation process. The Article Wizard is available to help you create an article, where it will be reviewed and considered for publication. For information on how to request a new article that can be created by someone else, see Requested articles. Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Sterling C. Quinlan

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Sterling C. Quinlan requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.encyclopedia.com/arts/educational-magazines/quinlan-sterling-c-1916-2007-red-quinlan-sterling-carroll-quinlan. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi there, Megb64, and welcome to Women in Red. It's good to see you intend to help us improve coverage of women writers and artists. On the basis of the biographies you've already written, it looks as if you'll be a useful member. I've been through many of your articles adding categories, defaultsort, authority control, etc. You'll find guidelines about these and other aspects of writing women's biographies in our Ten Simple Rules. You'll soon be receiving our notice for next month which includes women writers. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Proposed deletion of Iris Apatow

edit

Hello, Megb64

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Velella, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I’ve proposed an article that you started, Iris Apatow, for deletion because it's a biography of a living person that lacks references. To prevent the deletion, please add a reference to the article. You may remove the deletion tag yourself once the article has at least one reliable source.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Velella}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Matilda Gilruth Carpenter moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Matilda Gilruth Carpenter, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. Right now, there is not a single in-depth source about this person. She might be notable, but the brief mentions do not show it. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). Thanks for your contributions to Laurene Santley. Unfortunately, it is not ready for publishing because it needs more sources to establish notability and the sources given are either not verifiable (a link to a newspaper Wikipedia article is not a verifiable source) or non-RS (IMDb). Writing biographies

edit

Hallo Meg, I've come across a few biographies you've created using {{Simple biography}}. I've never seen this template before, but the result isn't good. The lead sentence it creates includes a redundant circular link (it links the lead name, though this doesn't affect the appearance as it would be bolded anyway), and it gives the dates as, for example "b. November 3, 1890, d. November 13, 1959," rather than "(November 3, 1890 – November 13, 1959)". Please stop using it, or clean up after you've used it. Thanks. (Did someone recommend you to use it? If so, I don't think it was good advice.) PamD 00:09, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

On the other hand there's a very useful little template called {{L}}, which has to be used substituted: here's my standard messaage about it: (I noticed that Susan Galton didn't have a "DEFAULTSORT" so would be filing under "S" not "G" in any categories)
There is a very easy way to add the DEFAULTSORT (so the article files by surname in lists), and Category:Living people where appropriate, and any birth or death date category: {{subst:L|1882|1984|Brown, Annie}} would create {{DEFAULTSORT:Brown, Annie}}, Category:1882 births and Category:1984 deaths, while {{subst:L|||Smith, Jane}} would create {{DEFAULTSORT:Smith, Jane}}, Category:Living people and Category:Date of birth missing (living people). Lack of death date implies "living" (or you can add "unknown" or "missing" as the death date to suppress this). You get a lot done for a few keystrokes: I think it's a great little template. Happy Editing.
PamD 00:21, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for letting me know! I won't use {{Simple biography}} template anymore. I don't think any recommended I use it, I believe it was something I came across organically. And thanks for the tip about DEFAULTSORT, I'll definitely start using that. Megb64 (talk) 15:21, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I think the template is perhaps intended for adding a brief biography to a list, but it's not helpful as I can't think of any situation in which we use a "b." and "d.", where both are known, rather than "(date-date)"! I've posted on the talk page of the template to ask what it's for.
There's always more to learn about editing Wikipedia: next lesson is that if you want to refer to a template, don't type {{Simple biography}} but {{tl|Simple biography}}. "tl" stands for "Template link". It means you can see what the template is named, and click on it to get to the template documentation page, but it doesn't actually leap into action (ie try to display stuff, add categories, or whatever the template does).
I produced the above effect by using the <code></code> and <nowiki></nowiki> markup: "Code" displays it in big chunky letters, and "nowiki" means it doesn't get read as Wiki markup. Both are useful when discussing wiki markup. Lots to learn. Happy Editing!
Another point: always have a look at what you've input before leaving the page. You'd included a "live" usage of {{Simple biography}} which produced a strange layout (see this version of this talk page, where the template was struggling to perform with no input parameters!). I fixed it by adding the "tl". If you find you've made a mess and can't work out how to fix it, but have already hit "Publish", you can always go into the page history and click on "undo". It happens, and is better than leaving the page looking odd. PamD 15:49, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Megb64 (talk) 18:07, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
You might be interested to see Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2023 December 8 where I've proposed {{Simple biography}} for deletion, because I can't see that it's any use to anyone and is just misleading by its very existence! PamD 10:19, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Good idea! I agree that it is very misleading. Megb64 (talk) 15:47, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Your submission at Articles for creation: Hilary Linstead (April 23)

edit

Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted because it included copyrighted content, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. You are welcome to write an article on the subject, but please do not use copyrighted work. GMH Melbourne (talk) 01:38, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the biggest problem is list of things, like "writers, directors, composers, choreographers, and cinematographers." which could be summarized to "people in the film industry" - or whatever would be correct for that scenario.
There are also hits on the names of works. You're good if it's just one name of a work, but where there are two or more from the same source, you just need to find a way to word it so it doesn't look like a copy-and-paste - perhaps summarizing a bit of information from the source about each of the works and put it in two sentences? Perhaps.
I hope that helps. It would be nice to save it, if that's possible, otherwise a tag for copyright violations will probably mean that the draft will be deleted soon.
Is this a workable solution GMH Melbourne?–CaroleHenson (talk) 02:47, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Pin-up models by nationality

edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Pin-up models by nationality indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 22:39, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

The main thing I would recommend right now is gathering more references. The two you have now look reliable, but its best to have more if possible. Do you have access to the Wikipedia Library? If so, I recommend looking for more news sources on Newspapers.com and NewspaperArchive.com. I have found those two collections particularly helpful in writing biographies for actors of Hazard's era.
