Standardizing formats for countries' economy articles

edit

Hi Alex, thank you for showing me User:Mcnabber091/Economy of the United States. I had a chance to talk over your initiative with my lab advisor. I started on Wikipedia for an independent study lab in contemporary media arts, only about a month ago, but he's been an editor here for several years. We both agree that what you are trying to do is important and worthwhile.

However, organizing mostly around tables isn't likely to be received very well. The "Prose" section under Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Tables#When tables may not be appropriate explains the main idea behind the likely resistance to a table-only presentation format. Basically, Wikipedia tries to follow the style and presentation of traditional encyclopedias, but you are designing for an almanac format, which has a nearly identical purpose but a very different style.

Here are some examples of standardized Wikipedia article formats:

I hope this gives you enough to go on. I want to help you if I can, so please let me know your thoughts and keep me up to date on your ideas. EllenCT (talk) 20:23, 8 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for you advice on how to improve the presentation. I'm glad that you're willing to help. The next step is to recreate User:Mcnabber091/Economy of the United States for all 196 countries. I would be very happy if you were willing to help create new wiki articles for more countries (ex. China, Sweden, United Kingdom, Ethiopia, Monaco, Nauru, Japan, etc.). Partial data is all I'm looking for. Copy/paste from: User:Mcnabber091/Economy of the United StatesMcnabber091 (talk) 17:42, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think the tables are necessary for the data being presented. All of the data is in 3 or more columns. There will be sections that are primarily qualitative such as 'History.Mcnabber091 (talk) 17:42, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your reply on my talk page. Please make sure you feel comfortable demonstrating Wikipedia:Tutorial and then let me know Whether you think converting the tabular data you have identified and tabular data as appears on existing articles for countries' economies makes sense for Wikidata. EllenCT (talk) 05:28, 12 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think that this project should be it's own Wikimedia project similar to Wikispecies. This weekend I am going to duplicate the U.S. economic report for other countries. I'll let you know when I have finished the 'Economy of China' draft article.Mcnabber091 (talk) 18:53, 12 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I saw your edit at Example (talk · contribs)'s talk page. Be clear that this page is only a test page and you missed to sign your post! Moreover: your meta proposal is a bit... err... redundant! I believe (with a community consensus) that Wikidata is able to include such information... Regards, mabdul 05:41, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I do not believe this project is redundant.

There are many databases in the world. The World Bank has a ton of data. The IMF has a ton of data. Wikidata will be another huge collection of data.

The value added of this project is the specific combination of data presented on a single page. The exact combination of data provided is crucial because it is a very concise way to explain an economy. Economists can help determine the best way to present the information. It's comparable to the periodic table in Chemistry.

This project is specifically aimed to improve public understanding of the economy in a simple format. Wikidata would not address this problem since it's top goal is to be a database for all topics. Wikidata would lack the simplicity due to its expansiveness.

The Wikidata introduction page says, "(Wikidata) will allow easy reuse of that data by Wikimedia projects and third parties, and will enable computers to easily process and “understand” it."

I believe that the projects can be complimentary. The Wikimedia Foundation is a great collection of projects.Mcnabber091 (talk) 16:38, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't think you understand that we can store the data on Wikidata, then extract it into a table on the English (or any other language) Wikipedia. Anyway, it seems like creating Economy-summary pages would fit into the scope of Wikipedia. πr2 (tc) 14:17, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Right now I am looking for support on the project. That is the next step is find people who are willing to help out.

Potentially this wiki project could have a separate wiki article for every single city in the world. I have posted the 'country format' online, but there is also a 'state format', 'county format' and 'city format'. The model can also have a standardized format for every company and bank.

This project would have a limited amount of data in order to keep the simplicity of the project. The current 'Economy of ________' pages are not organized and do not present the economic information in an easily understandable way.

The current goal is to create a wiki article for every country according to the model I posted. I think it would be awesome to compare the fiscal budget of the U.S. with Sweden for example. Or look at the employment of Monaco. Or the GDP value added of Ethiopia. I think the results would be very informative.

Any specific details you were looking for?Mcnabber091 (talk) 16:38, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I do not think this project can go onto the English Wikipedia because the overhaul would be too large. There is already too much information to re-organize on the 'Economy of ________' pages. The re-organization would be messy and tedious.

I think it would make more to start a new Wikimedia project. This would allow for simplicity and the optimal way to present economic information. The periodic table has value because of its simplicity and this project has similar intentions.Mcnabber091 (talk) 16:37, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

"the overhaul would be too large" - really? Using WikiData and automatically generating these pages doesn't sound like large "overhaul". Don't forget: Wikidata is a very new project and the development is still ongoing. Such features are still in discussion! mabdul 05:39, 25 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wikidata is a great things for Wikipedia. The articles that are associated with the global economic map would be positively impacted by Wikidata.

Hmm, while the information being gathered is very interesting, I agree with the other comments at [1]. It would be more useful if this data were integrated into Wikipedia. Infoboxes with basic stats are very common, as are links to lists and subarticles that focus on a specific feature of an economy. I think the information is more likely to be found by readers and maintained by editors if it's on Wikipedia instead of some parallel project. -- -- Beland (talk) 21:32, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
i tried to add my project into the normal Wikipedia but unfortunatly they have been rejected since they are too similar to the 'Economy of ______' articles. The guy who rejected it said my project would be better suited as it's own wikimedia project. Mcnabber091 (talk) 15:05, 4 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

It's ok for those of us who are more temperature and/or sunlight sensitive to come but leave early, or skip the event if you think that you should; people who are very young, elderly, or have other health issues are more vulnerable to heat stroke. Health and safety first. Cheers, --Pine 15:08, 2 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Economic summary drafts

edit

Hi there, I noticed that you have just over 100 economic summary of X drafts like User:Mcnabber091/Economic summary of Australia you created a number of years back. I'm pretty sure every article has a mainspace equivalent (Economy of Australia for a partial example). Have you considered merging the content and listing the drafts for deletion? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 05:57, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Ricky81682: this is all part of https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Global_Economic_Map:_About which later became econfactbook.org. Currently I am working with Wikidata to automatically update 'Economy of X' pages. These summary pages can be deleted and I would be okay with that since they are no longer being used. Mcnabber091 (talk) 06:51, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Do you mind tagging the ones you don't need with {{db-author}}? Thanks! -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:59, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I'm confused what exactly should I do? Type {{db mcnabber091}} on the talk page?Mcnabber091 (talk) 07:24, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
No, type {{db author}} on the draft pages you don't need such as User:Mcnabber091/Economic summary of Australia at the top. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:34, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Can I just delete them myself instead of having to write that message on all of them? Sorry for making so many of these. See the full list here: https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Mcnabber091/sandbox/Country_articlesMcnabber091 (talk) 08:16, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I can do that for you then. No worries about the number. Are you ok with all of them being deleted? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 09:04, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes you can delete all of the country sample articles except for the United States one. The US one has the most complete data and I would like to keep it if that's okay. Thanks for your help. Mcnabber091 (talk) 16:13, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Any time. If you want anything restored, you can ask me or make a request at WP:REFUND. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:48, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

A demo wiki is up and running!

Dear members of WikiProject Genealogy, this will be the last newsletter for 2017, but maybe the most important one!

You can already now try out the demo for a genealogy wiki at https://tools.wmflabs.org/genealogy/wiki/Main_Page and try out the functions. You will find parts of the 18th Pharao dynasty and other records submitted by the 7 first users, and it would be great if you would add some records.

And with those great news we want to wish you a creative New Year 2018!

Hi. I am contacting you because you are a member of the Business Wikiproject. I submitted proposals for updating the wiki article on LRN (company) whose main focus is advisory on business ethics, regulation, and corporate culture. I have followed all WP policies to the best of my abilities. Your review of the request would be very much appreciated. Thanks. DiegoPlace6561 (talk) 17:36, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
