John Stuart Hepburn

edit

G'day Mate, I need some advice please. I found a picture of John Hepburn on the net here. Since Hepburn died in 1860 I'm thinking the image should be public domain? I'd love to put it on the article but not sure how to go about accessing old images without breaking the rules? Any suggestions? Cheers --Sting Buzz Me... 12:01, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Errors in cricket books

edit

I am compiling a list of Perryisms. At least 15 in 25 pages in the 1948 chapter of Miller's Luck. Having said that, I do note that Fingleton's Brightly Fades The Don also seems to be a bit loose in some places, saying that Loxton made his Test debut at Old Trafford and forgetting that he debuted against India the season before. Seems a bit odd. And I spotted a few more. Maybe in the old days, they didn't check things as carefully as the likes of Haigh and Frith nowadays or Fingo was a bit more of the poetic pundit. But the Roebuck articles nowadays don't have the same factual errors, although Roebuck does seem to be a bit sweeping and vague with the data when he is talking in the commentary, not so in print. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:28, 31 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Added some more to the list! YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:32, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: this edit. I added the note because being a BLP, I thought it only fair to make the same disclosure than Haigh made himself in the essay I pulled the quote from. Without a doubt, any reasonably knowledgeable cricket scholar would come to the same conclusion but given that reviews this one ("Perry's work, much like Bradman himself, is head and shoulders above the competition") exist I thought it prudent to be fair. However, happy to be guided by your opinion on this topic. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 06:55, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I tried adding the link to my article although it probably got cut off as a spamming attempt. Pity I haven't bought anything on amazon it won't let me post there. I tried posting on the ABC shop as well don't know if it got through yet. Maybe I should drop the ABC a line about them having only the best writers please. And as for Gideon Haigh, he pointed that footnote out to me when I emailed him with my list of Perryisms. :) Of course I guess we can note that Haigh made his own disclosure. I'll tell him of your opnion of him wrt Perry though! YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:45, 6 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Teehee. I popped onto the ABC Bookshop and left a review there as well! I wonder if anyone will read it. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:56, 6 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tackled some of the points made in the GA review, but I think at least one of them can only be done by someone on your side of the globe! Also (shamefacedly) I haven't a clue how to transclude my comments on to the Talk page (feeble, I know). Cheers. Johnlp (talk) 22:22, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thankyou for the tip. I also really like the contributions and images you have made to/for Victorian articles too. It looks like you've visited a lot of places. I think I've addressed all your comments. Nev1 (talk) 23:55, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for a thorough review. Having listened to Test Match Special so much, I hadn't realised how much jargon I'd picked up, but on reflection something like "unbeaten", while clear to cricket fans, is impenetrable to anyone else. I'll try to keep an eye on it in future. Cheers, Nev1 (talk) 15:40, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't think I'll be taking the article to FAC in the near future. Articles like this require regular updates, and while I could handle that, whether each update would be up to FA standards is debatable. Taking FA criterion 1e ("content does not change significantly from day to day") literally, it would be fine, but after a year the article would be noticeably different from the one promoted. I think if I were to take an article on a cricketer to FAC, it would be on someone retired or dead so the content doesn't change substantially over time. I'll try to get the hang of cricketing GAs for now. Cheers, Nev1 (talk) 16:32, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much. The photography is something new I am trying to develop and improve but I really enjoy it albeit at the expense of some other things at present :-( Mattinbgn\talk

Did you cruise around Victoria just for that? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:55, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Mainly, but also just for my own interest—to see places I haven't seen etc. The travel isn't as bad as it looks as many of the photos were taken while travelling in between Melbourne and my town; just on different routes.
You can see a full accounting at Commons:Category:Photographs by Mattinbgn, there is just over 3,000 images, mainly of small towns in Vic, NSW and Qld (mainly the Riverina and northern Victoria) with a focus on public architecture (post offices, churches, public halls etc.). I was hoping to get up to the Mallee and the Riverland areas over Christman but it may need to wait until around Easter break now. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 04:26, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I was tempted to do that to keep track of my photos, but it seems a hassle to do so unless, I have some script to help me. Do you know of one? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 04:32, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
No I don't. I did them either by hand or using the cat-a-lot tool set in my user preferences and visiting the categories where I knew my images were (i.e. town cats). It took a fair while to go back and do them all but it has been useful to have them all in the one place. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 04:42, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

WP:AUS and the Australian cricket team

edit
I see a correlation between the Australian cricket team and the slowing up of WP:AUS
  • McGrath <-> Casliber (bird lovers)
  • Adam Gilchrist <-> Giggy (dashers with the same initials AG)
  • Shane Warne <-> Mattinbgn (Victorian and cricket)
  • All have slowed down on the FAs dramatically in recent times and they stopped writing FAs in the same chronological order as the cricketers have retired. Warne-McGrath-Gilchrist and Mattinbgn-Casliber-Giggy as far as Aussie FAs. And, we've started struggling without them. Giggy also has a habit of walking from the crease as well. I say the CommonsHelper bot is playing up. I've moved some files only to have 2 of them not moved to Commons at all which meant I had to revert the NowCommons tag and keep trying but gave up and this is possibly whats happened to File:Qcc 1927.jpg also. I think you are right. From time to time it has some issues. I haven't been able to get CommonsHelperHelper up and running for months now. -- Mattinbgn\talk 10:33, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I just wished someone was willing to work on debugging it (bugs within the coding is the main issue IMO) as I don't really want to upload 12mb (each photo BTW! :|) photos. On other off topic matters (:P), all over Australia towns and some cities seem to have these type of street light poles. Bidgee (talk) 11:20, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's funny that you suggest we stop simply reverting one another and instead discuss the issue in the appropriate place just after reverting me, without replying to my comments at the discussion. "Pizzled" in John the bookmaker controversy

edit

I looked it up on Wiktionary and it only said things about penis. I presumed it means "pissed on" as in being blindsided and treated very disrespectfully and kept in the dark in this context? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:25, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Urban Dictionary comes to the rescue. "Pizzled" can be used a slang term for drunk, as an alternative to "pissed". Indeed, that is the form that I have heard the word used in the past. My guess is that Merriman extended the use of "pizzled" as an alternative to "pissed" as in drunk to "pissed" as in angry; an interesting example of semantic change! -- Mattinbgn\talk 02:44, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pity about that. Anyway, the bios are now all at GA, although Tiger Khan (talk · contribs) tagged three of them for merges (the three ground staff), but I overwrote them (accidentally) with my hard-drive expansions. Oh well, I'm not going to reinstate them as I think it might cop a quick-fail with a big merge tag like that. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:38, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

CfD shits me to tears. It's the most clique-infested place on a very clique-infested website. The idea of independent thought and opinion is anathema there and it is never enough the CfD crew to merely refute a point, the editor with the deviant opinion has to be cut down to size as well, with maximum snarkiness. Best for my own wikimood if I just avoid it in the future and just let 'em run riot and continue to empire build. It's like standing in front of a bus anyway; you don't make any impact on the bus, you just end up flattened. As for the merge tags, given that the articles clearly meet WP:N, I don't see any problem with effectively removing them. TigerKhan didn't bother putting his case for a merge on the talk page, so there is no discussion about any proposed merge for them to point to anyway. -- Mattinbgn\talk 02:50, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
FYI my views on the CfD process is can be found here. Nothing has happened since to make me change my mind about any of it. -- Mattinbgn\talk 02:55, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Is Growden a good writer? What is philosophy like. I noted that he wrote a book on Fingo, I wonder if he is interested in the Catholic-Protestant battles in the 1930s? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:55, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
To be honest, I haven't read the book cover to cover yet, merely picked through it where necessary. It arrived as an interlibrary loan last week and I hope to sit down with it over the weekend. I don't know about Growden's Catholic-Protestant thing but inter-communal tensions must have been rife in the 30s as claims and counter-claims appear everywhere in articles about the period. Perhaps it wasn't quite the Partition of India but certainly relations between the two groups (separated by ethnicity i.e. British/Irish, as much as religion) seem to have been characterised by a low undercurrent of hostility. Roisterer is working on Laurie Nash and it appears Nash felt as though his Catholic background told against him at the selection table. As always it is hard to know what the truth is behind such thoughts. Interestingly, Growden makes the point that what happened at the meeting with McCabe, Chuck, Tiger and O'Brien will remain a mystery until the ACB archives are opened. Well, they have been opened now (to Haigh & and Frith at least) and I'm not sure if the mystery has been cleared up at all! -- Mattinbgn\talk 04:02, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
From reading Haigh and Frith, it seems that in the old days they hardly wrote anything down so as to not incriminate anything. Certainly that's what's Bradman's colleagues said was his MO; do it all by word of mouth so you can't be traced. Apparently Bradamn asked Grahame Thomas if he would mind not going to RSA to appease the apartheid regime. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 04:08, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ponny

edit

Is that your next FA target? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:55, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Don't know yet. I picked up the book over the Christmas break, funnily enough after a less than enthusiastic review by Haigh in his book given to me as a gift. It is clear that Ponsford lived a quiet and uneventful life outside cricket and the book is quite dull, although the research has been extensive. Ponsford was almost pathologically shy and would literally hide from well wishers etc. until the day he died, even when acting basically as Ian Johnson's right hand man at the MCC. The book makes a few errors on cricket issues, such as claiming Albert Trott captained Australia and the author does not read like someone intimately familiar with the game. When talking about family, work etc. the book has the ring of authenticity. I would not consider it a reliable source for most things cricket but for the other things in his life, it is minutely detailed.

The book contains a major section of Ponsford's baseball career. Like Richardson, and Ian Chappell (and Lawry, I think) Ponsford was a keen baseballer. He played Claxton Shield and was picked in national teams to play visiting American colleges, warships etc. In the 50s, he was acclaimed as having been one of Australia's greatest ever baseballers. I must admit, I had no idea about that at all before reading the book. -- Mattinbgn\talk 04:20, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of OzRacingWrap page

edit

Hi you recently sent me a message about the possible speedy deletion of the page OzRacingWrap. The deletion has occured it would seem. I believe the page is appropriate as to the best of my knowledge the podcast and site are the only independent podcast that covers Australian racing in the various series. All other podcasts of a like nature are from established media outlets and indeed I can not find one that covers the range of motor racing series that OzRacingWrap covers. On those grounds I believe it is notable and worthy of inclusion (though I should have added all that to the page).

I would therefore request you reconsider the deletion of the page.

Well done and keep it up. ;) Cheers, JamesA >talk 03:26, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

PS - Seeing as you know a bit about Victoria, I'll ask you a question. I was just up near St Arnaud, Victoria at a place called "Fenton's Creek". I took a few photos but am unsure if it is notable enough for a Wikipedia article. Once a bigger town during the gold rush but shrunk down like the rest. Now has a few houses, CFA station, an unused school house and a church. I'll put the photos on commons for now. Cheers, JamesA >talk 03:26, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. 2 more questions :p So does it not matter if photos are close duplicates of other ones already supplied or should I only upload ones that are fairly different? And about town articles, does that mean that every town deserves an article or only those notable enough or with a suitable amount of info or pictures? I'll start on the Fentons Creek, Victoria article soon; thanks for the tips. Cheers, JamesA >talk 10:41, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Miller biography

Do you have a copy of cricket crossfire? Trying to think of where to get sources to diversify the Refs on Miller's articles. Obviously general criket books can be used in most of the matchplay bits but the war period needs a biog I think. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 06:46, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes I do. In fact it is sitting right next to me at the moment! Ponsford's biographer mentioned that Ponsford was Miller's childhood idol and I plan to have a look through the book to see what it says about the topic. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 06:50, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Could you whack some stuff or cites into the early life and military article for some diversity please? Also could you have a look here Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/Assessment/Military_career_of_Keith_Miller - I'm wondering if it might be an indicator of things to come, but I can't see how the pure RAAF info can dominate as Miller was never notable for being an important military figure, it was only is cricketing legend that prompted all the anecdotes about his crashes and altercations LOL YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 06:54, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think maybe we should just leave the Perry ones in there so that it doesn't seem as though only Miller agrees with the statement. Although Miller just ripped off CC without even checking to see if it was BS, I'll get. So says Ramachandra Guha anyway. Do you think we should nag WP:CRIC for some 1948 reinforcements. I think Hassett is the most obvious one in terms of % incompleteness. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 06:20, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Seeing Miller at FAC will probably get the enthusiasm levels of some of the WP:CRIC fellows going again. The core articles are getting very close. You are correct, Hassett is the obvious next step. -- Mattinbgn\talk 08:39, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ponting

You were quick to add that he tied with Clarke for the Allan Border Medal! Aaroncrick(talk) 12:37, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Gotta be quick around here! -- Mattinbgn\talk 12:48, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Haha sure do :) Ponting looked a bit shocked, don't think he was expecting to win. Aaroncrick(talk) 12:51, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Did they go through the numbers explicitly yesterday. I switched on in the middle of the ODI part and didn't see any numbers. Doesn't appear to be transparent. The media are very biased IMHO, I reckon Clarke would have won whether he deserved to or not, like in 2005. As for Johnson, statistically impressive but I can't say I would think too much of a guy who gets so many wickets from wide balls, if he won. Although if Clarke was dropped over and over and got really lucky, I think the media would just vote on stats. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:51, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Personally I would stop trying to be objective with vote counts and criteria and just appoint a committee to make the awards based on subjective criteria. Votes are subjective anyway, they just appear to be objective. The whole event suffers from severe Brownlow-envy. -- Mattinbgn\talk 07:23, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

confirmed! The readability tool counts non-templated citations, so we have some more wiggle room! YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 03:35, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Given Miller's enduring fame, a large article doesn't seem inappropriate. One issue that needs addressing is in the sub-articles. As the sub-articles drill down into the detail, the more specific the descriptions required and the more use for specific jargon. Jargon, while vilified here at Wikipedia, is not all bad and getting rid of it all at the risk of losing encyclopedic information is a poor trade. Articles on science are allowed different levels of accessibility to the layman; I see no reason why cricket should not be accorded the same privilege. -- Mattinbgn\talk 07:23, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I really don't know how Ponting won. I don't really even think he deserved to win. Bracken was the right choice for the ODI player. I can't think of anyone that really deserved to win overall. We haven't had a great year. I agree that Johnson gets so many wickets with wide half volleys. It Must be a left arm thing. All left arm bowlers always seem to get wickets from bad balls, even in junior and grade cricket. Maybe because they are in the minority. Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 04:34, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

That's the problem with a poor year. I'm not so sure that Ponting did not deserve to win. He did not have a great year by his own high standards but I can't think of anyone had a clearly better year than he did. One of the problems with the Australian team is that Ponting is now almost in the same position as Lara; head and shoulders better than any of his team mates. This is going to have a distorting effect on the team going forward. Some bowlers have the knack of getting wickets from bad balls, Ian Botham made a career around it and Stuart McGill did all right from bad balls too. -- Mattinbgn\talk 07:23, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
True although at least Macgill's balls did stuff- big leg break, wrong'un etc whereas Johnson doesn't really do anything. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Even Hussey has had a miserable time! Hopefully Ponting can handle the pressure.. Lately in Test's and ODI, he's basically been opening the innings. I think a position should be found for Hodge. As much as i love Warner's entertainment I don't know if he's ready for ODI's yet. I don't know how Cameron White even made the squad. Yeah he can hit a big ball but he has had repeated failures with both bat and ball (his bowling is atrocious). Phil Hughes should defiantly go on the tour to South Africa. What do you think of Symonds being left out of that same tour? I'm not too sure about this one.. Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 11:25, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hodge would at least add some experience and with some of the bigger names now out of the squad he may settle into the team a little better. He doesn't do much for his own cause bleating about selection though. The experiment with Warner went on far too long; there is a reason he has not played f-c cricket—he is not that good!. Symonds needed to be left off the SA tour; not because he is a naughty boy but because he is terribly and woefully out of form. Cameron White would be fine if the selectors got it through their skulls that is not a bowler of any skill whatsoever. Pick him as a specialist batsman, or not at all. Hughes must be picked. It is a little unfair on Jaques, but Hughes is making runs and Jaques is returning from injury. South Africa will be a struggle, but hopefully some of the new members of the line up will take the opportunity to stand up.
Heard Warner bowled a bit of leg spin and has a List A wicket, but I haven't seen him bowl so don't know if he's any good. Are you one of Ponting's supporters or another critic? Here in Launceston you don't here as much negative press as you would on the mainland about him. I'm not sure if he's as popular as Boony though, but I can't make a judgment because I wasn't around when Boon was playing. Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 23:25, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I am an unabashed Ponting supporter. He is the best Australian batsman I have seen (and by a fair margin and my memory stretches back to Greg Chappell) and while not a superb captain, he is at least adequate. The worship of Steve Waugh and Mark Taylor's captaincy skills is entirely overblown. I think much of the criticism that Ponting receives is entirely unfair and he is more sinned against than sinning. There are a lot of double standards about when it comes to international cricket and Australia. -- Mattinbgn\talk 23:40, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I find him a bit annoying, but he is the best batsman of the last 20 years, at least effective than SRT and BCL although it might start weighing him down being in a poor team; most of the Invincibles' averages started going down a lot in the 1950s although the bowling also improved. Probably the best two post-war Australian batsmen along with Chappell. Unfortunately, yes he's better than my buddy Harvey.....probably..but I hope I'm wrong.....well Harvey's a lot better against the Asian teams and spin IMHO. His captaincy is pretty silly sometimes, but most captains apart from Fleming have done pretty poorly with a ridiculous attack, and to be honest most Australians would ridicule the way Kumble/Ganguly/Inzy captained, but now that Australia have bowlers of similar standard to Agarkar, Nehra and Sami, they're in the same boat. Australia doesn't have the problem of having all these uncles in the field and terrible runners like the subcontinent teams, but at the same time the Australian captain/management at least make the players do some fitness/fielding/gym practice. But I think Dhoni aside, the Australian captains are better "leaders of men" although Ponting, S Waugh and Border were extremely dull and turgid tacticians and strategists. I bet if I tallied up all the partnerships scored against Australia, SRW and Ponting would have lower averages conceded because of their W/R ratio but I reckon they also have a higher percentage of 150+/200+ partnerships conceded because of going through the motions when things don't fall over for them. I can't remember too many Laxman/Dravid type partnerships during Taylor's time. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
As for Bradman everyone goes on and on about how great he was, but apart from being relentless and the greatest batsman, his tactics weren't any different from Ponting, just batting everyone out of the game, setting a target of 600 and getting Lindwall/Miller/Johnston/Toshack to smash everyone. In some games he declared and made the opposition chases 400 in less than a day which is similar to what Ponting did in the Sydney Test against India and sometimes the score was about 8/200 at the end when they were never going to try and score 280 in a day against them. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Having said all that I think cricketers are generally excessively worshipped in cricket countries, especially as most cricket countries are 3rd world/disorganised/corrupt policies/racist etc and don't practice/train properly. I don't see how beating India compares to beating the US etc at the Olympics in a swimming relay, when one person a bit out of form will ruin everything, everybody is put under curfew, alcohol ban, regimented routine to maximise performance, whereas with the Indians, they never even go to the gym and are horseplaying during training and most of them slog during training instead of replicating match scenarios (At least they were when I was watching)....as for Ponting saying that Shane Watson showed "unbelievable commitment" by not drinking, come on, what a joke....YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's exactly what I think but I've gathered I'm probably in the minority. I agree he isn't a great captain but he's not the worst going around. I thought it was a bit unfair to call for his sacking from the captaincy after the Sydney Test against India. The Australian public are so fickle. When everything is going well his the best player in the world, and when the Aussies are not going so well he get's a public bashing. I thought it was very strange that he has been rested when he has publicly said he wants to play. Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 23:49, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Just one last question, lol =) Do you have any idea if Richard Hadlee and Michael Holding played a few matches for the Riverside Cricket Club (Tasmania)? I'm fairly sure at least one of them did. Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 01:43, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

(unindent) They both played for Tasmania and no doubt they had a grade club but I do not know what club it was. Perhaps you should raise your question at WT:CRIC or even at Cricinfo and you might get an answer. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 01:47, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I'll go down to the club soon and hopefully I can get some answers (By the way I play for the club so I should get some answers). Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 02:36, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hughes is good. Should have had Hodge in there although he keeps moaning all the time. Good move to take Hauritz, because it means Casson will get a game for NSW. At least Casson tries to take wickets....If Kallis/Dravid had been in good form I don't think Australia would have had any opportunities recently with the current robot attack and probably would never have bowled them out for less than 400. Too much robot-coaching down at the ACA. You should have seen Mallett fire up at the cricket forum. India could do with some more dynamic, if somewhat erratic bowlers in there. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hauritz doesn't get wickets, the batsmen get themselves out. Even though he's expensive at least Krazy Fish will bowl a wicket taking ball every now and then. Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 03:03, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Looks pretty dubious. Trumper's innings was not in a Shield match, but if you start including all inter-state matches, there is an even higher innings of 383 by Charles Gregory. So there is no way 292* can be a record. Tintin 00:19, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I hate to think what Marysville now looks. Creditable reports on ABC Radio that only one building is standing in the small down. What a sad day! :( A "Black Saturday" in Australia's history. Bidgee (talk) 15:05, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

That's horrible. Marysville was such a nice town too. I'd like to go up there after the road blocks have finished and have a look around. Hopefully they will rebuild the town instead of abandoning it. Chicken-7 talk 01:08, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
It was a beautiful town, in the winter as a base for Lake Mountain, in the summer for a respite from the heat and in the autumn especially for the leaves. All the exotic European trees will be gone, unlike the natives they will not regenerate, and they won't be replanted. A great shame. I was only in Kinglake over the Christmas break and I thought at the time it looked like a disaster waiting to happen. Dry, heavily timbered, houses scattered in the bush with little clearing. Very sad day. -- Mattinbgn\talk 01:17, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's probably a good thing that they don't replant non-native vegetation, the more regional natives the better. Those of us who do recall all those European trees in Marysville will have something unique to remember. Nick carson (talk) 02:53, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry Nick but I disagree. Non-natives have there place in towns like Kinglake and Marysville. Natives have more of a fire risk then those non-natives in the area. I have a mixture of natives and non-natives if you like to know. :) I must say it's quite sad to hear the death toll this morning but now it's just something that words can't describe. I trying to do the temp charts for the articles ATM and watching (Well Impossible now with the smoke from Beechworth) a fire to my SE (burning near Tarcutta, New South Wales ATM). Bidgee (talk) 07:44, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I can't believe what the death toll has risen to tonight. Even thought I live in an urban area, the fire risks in the surrounding area were apparently really high. Yesterday my suburb (or even the whole city was shrowded in smoke). I agree that natives have a place in those towns. Really hope that the fires don't get worse but I guess that is unlikely. Just a heads up on your recent revert. The anonymous editor did provide an external link which supports the assertion of Naylor being found "huddling in his wifes arms", though I myself err on the side of caution with including such a statement this early on. It's the only source I can find saying such a thing at this time. -- Longhair\talk 10:04, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I saw this too - my problem with the addition by the anon is that the reference is not secondary enough for this situation. Furthermore I watched as Tony Jones and Peter Hitchener first broke the news that Moiree Naylor had been found as a victim of the fires and the reports stated that they and many others were concerned as a result for Brian's welfare because the two were inseparable. At that time Brian was listed as missing and the worst was presumed - on that basis even though it is possible, a report of this nature that the two Naylor's were found so entwined together seems to fly in the face of the first reports. I agree with your and Longhair's caution before adding this material.--VS talk 10:14, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

can you help monitor the SL cricket attack page. Yousaf is adding conspiracy theories about Indian spies again, per his usual MO on Pakistani terrorism topics. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 07:45, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah, you have a good library then. The only books I have are SRW's 1996 WC diary, Cashman's AZ (which is good), and Pollard's "Cricket the Australian Way", the rest are borrowed. ARW and AZ were 20c from the library clearance sale. For whatever reason they usually turf anything over ten years old. How much did it cost you to put all that together? You didn't buy them all new did you? YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 00:40, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just passing WP, saw the light on, thought I'd drop in. Here's a classic e.g. as to why I retired [[8]]; from my first edit, it seemed to me that a narrowly specialist editor who really knows his subject matter isn't a valued commodity in this environment, and stuff like this confirmed that opinion. How can you disagree with (a self-appointed) someone whose syntax is as compelling as wizardman's "The rewriting of the prose will likely take some time to make it good".....lol. All the best with your Aus skippers project, I think I said to you b4 that the essence of Australian cricket history can be explained through the prism of the captaincy; these men have given Australian cricket its' unique identity. Look forward to your future FAs in this area, if you need some help then email me. Cheers

You should have stuck around Phanto...These things are easily dealt with. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 03:06, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Only tow pages agout the libel, nothing much that isn't already in Haigh's rendition of the libel case. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 03:06, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Do you have the page from Rick smith's book that is used as a ref? YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 05:19, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The prose and jargon need a bit of work and a GA review will (hopefully) give me some feedback on that. It went to PR and did not make much of a splash there. I like the new blog BTW ... Mattinbgn\talk 01:12, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Heh, maybe the less homely feel is scaring off commenters...or is that my ugly mug...well I look more like Viru nowadays - the head, that is! YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 01:15, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

drv?

This discussion had no kind of consensus at all - there was a consensus to oppose the original proposal, and there was significant opposition to the idea of "medical doctors" (which was mostly in the tailing discussion rather than put to people). Worth going to DRV? (will have to wait to tomorrow as I have shaped DSL atm and things are painfully slow) Orderinchaos 02:43, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
