@TheRedPenOfDoom, Ian.thomson, Floquenbeam, Ponyo, BenBurch, and Masem: Can someone please tell me how to appeal my block? I have NO idea where to go or how to go about it. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Marcos12 (talk) 06:04, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
- As I explained before, I really think that WP:CLEANSTART would be your best bet at editing here. The key is to stay away from the articles you edited under this account (and possibly related topics, like Feminism and Antifeminism), and avoid the behaviors that got you blocked under this account. Attachment to this account name or its edits could be interpreted as a sign that you have not moved beyond past problems. Appealing a block would require proving that you're ready to contribute in an informed and cooperative manner, but your edits were focused on a particular topic that you were too emotionally invested in to edit cooperatively. If you want to try to appeal the block, use this template:
{{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
- -- BUT be sure to indicate that you will stay away from topics relating to Gamergate, and show that you've grown out of attacking others by explaining why it's wrong (beyond getting in trouble or possibly hurting people's feelings, something thought out that shows growth). It is not simply an apology the admins will be looking for, they need to know you:
- understand what lead to your block (by explaining what happened without blaming others, not just saying "I understand"),
- know how to avoid those problems in the future,
- have an active interest in learning how to improve the site for the sake of the site (flattering Jimbo does nothing, demonstrating that you're studying the policies and guidelines by citing which ones you went against and explaining how you plan on following them would do a lot).
- That won't guarantee an unblock, but anything less than that is guaranteed to not work. Asking for a mentor (using the template at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user) would also improve your chances, but again, doesn't guarantee an unblock. Ian.thomson (talk) 07:44, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
As Ian mentions above, use the {{unblock}} template to request an unblock. I'm concerned that in your request from 19 May below, you accuse the editor you were harrassing of using sockpuppets, without evidence, which is a bad sign. I would say at a minimum you'd need to agree to:
- Stay completely away from NorthBySouthBaranof; do not mention them, do not edit the same pages they edit.
- Stay completely away from GamerGate, and any other gender-related subjects.
- Not personally attack or harass any other editor, and realize that you'll be given a lot less leeway in this area than someone else might get.
Ian's other advice for an unblock request is good as well. --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:05, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
- On the off chance you saw the message that Floquenbeam removed, the suggestion therein would be a bad idea that would probably lead a community banned. When someone is community banned, we block any accounts they create (even clean starts), undo any edits they make (even if they're good). Ian.thomson (talk) 19:49, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
@Floquenbeam:Hi FLoquenbeam, how do I request an unblocking? I am willing to apologize and move forward. Thanks. Marcos12 (talk) 07:39, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
Also, it appears NorthBySouthBaranof and PeterTheFourth are the same person. Are we allowed to have multiple usernames? If so, how does one go about doing so? Marcos12 (talk) 07:39, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
@NorthBySouthBaranof, TheRedPenOfDoom, Ian.thomson, Floquenbeam, Ponyo, BenBurch, and Masem: AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO IS INTERESTED. Wikipedia will only let me ping 7 people per edit, so if I've forgotten you, it is NOT intentional. Many have helped me here, and to all of you I am grateful.
OFFICIAL STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO EVENTS WHICH OCCURRED ON THURSDAY, MARCH 26TH 2015
After careful consideration and discussion with my family, I've elected to make a brief statement on what transpired yesterday. I'd like to give thanks to everyone for giving me the time and platform to explain my position. Also to jimbo_wales for his vision in creating a truly remarkable place, and to the administrators who perform a truly thankless job, day in and day out. Words cannot express how important your contributions are to this project. FInally I would like to thank everyone reading this who has edited wikipedia at one time or another. Without you, wikipedia wouldn't exist.
Apology
editFirst, and of utmost importance, I wish to apologize to NorthBySouthBaranof. My behavior was unjustified, shameful and completely wrong. For those who are unaware, I had a disagreement with NBSB, an editor who lately has been the target of numerous on-and-off wiki attacks, during which he has acted with an enviable degree of professionalism and decorum. While some may disagree with his positions, NBSB has never resorted to hate speech or personal shots, even when on the receiving end of truly inexcusable abuse. True to form, during my disagreement with NBSB, his behavior was neither bellicose nor slanderous. Unfortunately, rather than a reasoned debate, the very backbone by which this encyclopedia is formed, I took a different path in my response to NorthBySouthBaranof. I engaged in personal attacks that were inappropriate, hateful and untrue. There is no excuse for my behavior, and I am truly sorry.
Sea-Lioning
editWith that said, I would like to weigh in on the concept of the "sea-lion" or "sealioning". The term originated from the Wondermark comic strip authored by the very talented David Malki. Shortly after publication of the strip, some adopted the term "Sea Lion" as a pejorative, particularly against marginalized/minority groups, apparently to label those who disagree with them. Their interpretation of the comic strip and the term is of course their prerogative. I, on the other hand, prefer to take the comic at face value; the commentary below is taken directly from the Wondermark website:
The term is new because confused and defeated individuals who do not understand how to properly communicate their ideas and how to do so in a public dialog, need to label and categorize the world around them that is 'wronging' them. Instead of learning how their logic is flawed, how their arguments are shallow or how they can better understand the bigger pictures, they need to represent the opposition as having some kind of marketable flaw. Thus Sea-lion-ing is born, now if someone asks you hard questions, just call them a sealion.
So if asking tough questions makes someone a "sea-lion", then I wear the badge with pride, as I feel a quality encyclopedia is partly compiled through intelligent, constructive debate. So to ALL the "Sea-Lions" out there, keep doing what you are doing - just make sure you do it in the right way.
Appeal
editI've decided not to appeal my block at this time. My behavior yesterday was so egregious as to warrant some serious self-reflection. This introspection is best done while staying an arms length from wikipedia. This decision is incredibly painful for me. While I am not a particularly prolific editor, I have visited wikipedia nearly every day of my life for the past 10 years, with only a very few exceptions. So to leave the website which is part of the very fabric of my daily routine is not a decision I make lightly. To those I've let down, I am sorry. I let down myself and my family which is the most painful part of all of this.
Gamergate
editI feel that Gamergate as a wikipedia topic is poisonous. I feel it leads to incredibly bad behavior on both sides of the aisle. I also maintain that Gamergate brings some important issues to light - I won't lie about that. Unfortunately it is a debate that at this time I can no longer engage in. The damage to my personal life is no longer worth the outcome. I am sorry if this seems cowardly - perhaps it is. But for some reason Gamergate brought out the worst in me, and for that reason I can no longer continue to be involved.
I would ask that this page not be blanked for a period of thirty (30) days, after which I have no objection. Marcos12 (talk) 21:16, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Archive
editI've been accused of being a sockpuppet for a "William Pina". I have no idea who this person is, and I intend to FIGHT these preposterous charges. In the meantime, this evening's press conference is indefinitely postponed. Please watch this space for updates, they should be forthcoming.
Thank you. Marcos12 (talk) 22:19, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
I HAVE RESIGNED FROM WIKIPEDIA Marcos12 (talk) 19:02, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
It's probably just as well you've retired; I've blocked this account indefinitely. This, right in the middle of an ANI thread about you making personal attacks, was... what's the word I'm looking for... stupid. --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:46, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
-Contested deletion -
This page should not be speedy deleted as pure vandalism or a blatant hoax, because it in no way fits the definition of either "vandalism", or a "hoax"--Marcos12 (talk) 22:00, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- You are correct, I've removed the tag. --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:14, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
@Editless941: In a further attempt to kick a dog while he is down, someone has endeavored to nominate my user page for deletion. A veritable erasure from the wiki-universe. Could you please help me, as you seem to be a supervisor with sort of authority in this matter? Long story short, I lost my temper (bad, I admit) when someone continually needled me. I was reported, arraigned and taken to ANI court, where I was found guilty (by a very small majority 5-4) and sentenced to an interminable/indefinite block.
In an effort to handle the situation with as much class as possible, I proceeded to resign and leave quietly, with at least some measure of pride still in tact.
Now one of the bureaucrats, in a further attempt to kick a dog when he's down, has nominated my page for DELETION. I ask you humbly for your assistance in this matter. It has been a most trying week. Thank you. Marcos12 (talk) 22:15, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- Never mind -
Thank you Floquenbeam Marcos12 (talk) 22:17, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
-Now I'm a sockpuppet??- @Ponyo: @Floquenbeam: Why am I being accused of being a sockpuppet?? Who is William Pina? WHY AM I BEING ATTACKED CONTINUALLY TODAY FROM ALL ANGLES??
- because editors and administrators are getting tired of disruption. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 00:41, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
- @TheRedPenOfDoom: I understand you may not care for me very much and that's fine. But I am not a sock. And as a fellow editor, REGARDLESS of your opinion of me as a disruption, you should defend me in this case, lest you find yourself unjustly accused one day. Its not a pleasant position to be in. Marcos12 (talk) 00:51, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
I have seen the disruption you have caused first hand for a month. The attacks on NBSB themselves should have been enough gamergate related disruption to call for immediate block under the arbcom sanctions.I hope you have many fewer bad days in the future which lead you to do things like you have done here. Best wishes. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:47, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

- Admins, it looks like this talk page isn't going to be used to actually appeal the block, so there's no reason for continued access.
- Marcos12, if you really were retiring, you wouldn't have noticed the sockpuppet investigation. If you really had any intention of leaving, you wouldn't base an argument around the idea that you'll be around to defend or accuse TheRedPenOfDoom someday (and if that "isn't" what you meant, your suggestion that he might find himself "unjustly" accused someday is meaningless). You're acting like you are going to engage in sockpuppetry, which only makes it easier to believe you already are engaging in sockpuppetry.
- If you really were sincere in your claims of wanting to do better, the best thing you can do to help you out is to change the password for this account to random gibberish, log out, and do not come back for a WP:CLEANSTART for until you've done a lot of growing up. If/when you do go for a WP:CLEANSTART, stay away from the sort of topics you edited under this account, and always edit as if every future employer was going to comb through your contributions. Ian.thomson (talk) 01:04, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
- Fine, but let me make something clear. I wasnt making a veiled threat to rPod. I was honestly saying "Hey, Im being thrown under the bus here, I am mot a sock, and you KNOW im not one. ". Maybe I will dash this account to pieces like a clumsy drunk stumbling into an old cupboard. Im just AMAZED that one edit led to ALL OF THIS MESS and that not a single admin understands what HAVING A BAD DAY means.Marcos12 (talk) 01:13, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
- The admins understand what having a bad day means. You need to understand how to handle having a bad day. Ian.thomson (talk) 01:20, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

- Fair enough. I genuinely apologize. Admins and @Ian.thomson: my plan IS to appeal, I simply need a little time to calm down. Is that a fair request? I would HUMBLY ask that you please not remove my talk page access. Sadly, it is all I have left, along with my damaged pride. Marcos12 (talk) 01:28, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Ian.thomson: How do I archive my talk page? I would like to post my appeal, but first I wish to archive the current contents. It seems due to my bloc I am unable to archive. Do you have a suggestion? Thank you for your time. Marcos12 (talk) 18:38, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Ian.thomson: Actually never mind. Sorry for the ping. Marcos12 (talk) 18:48, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Request reason:
It has been a year. I realize the error of my ways and will no longer edit in contentious areas. How do I appeal my block now that it has been a year? Marcos12 (talk) 21:45, 7 May 2016 (UTC)
Decline reason:
Thank you, when I blocked your sock yesterday, I couldn't remember the name of this account. You made the same insult yesterday that got you blocked last year. You are not welcome here. Go away. I've removed talk page access. Floquenbeam (talk) 00:16, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
