Hey from a fellow woman in sound!
editI've been updating pages on women in audio as I find errors (I've been researching for Soundgirls). Here's a couple things for your lists:
Articles to edit: Wilma Cozart Fine, Mary Shipman Howard
New category (I recently added): Early Recording Engineers (1930-1959)
I just added something to the category "Recording studios added by women" and there's no page.
My expertise is film/tv so happy to help with any info there. I'm curious why iMDB isn't considered valid cause that's more valuable to professionals than a resume. I'm happy to discuss it... if I could figure out where on Wikipedia to do it! Actaudio (talk) 03:23, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
Awesome! I will add those pages to edit and that category to my list. Categories (did you mean "Recording studios owned by women") that don't exist yet require you first assign a page or two to that category then you edit the category's settings to determine its parent categories. I have a wiki help link on categories on my user page for the specifics.
As for iMDB, since the userbase is the one editing credits on it, it is like a personal blog or website, which is not a proper, but can be an external link in an info box. My work around for that is film review sites linked by iMDB, the websites of the awards themselves, and magazine archive sites. Magazines and newspapers might be the best source for older artists. Glad to see another soundgirl! Lyrelyrebird (talk) 12:06, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
I saw "Recording studios owned by women" in your list of categories but when I tried to assign it to someone it came up red. So apparently it hasn't been used yet. I also was looking at Category:Women record producers and it probably would make sense to have sub-categories (it's getting crowded) - does it make sense to do by date? (like pre-1960, 1960-1980, etc?) Or by genre - or maybe both? Also, the main "Record Producer" page has nothing about women and of course the most influential list (from a source) includes no women. Do you want to add to the list a section about female record producers? Actaudio (talk) 06:15, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
I just created "Recording studios owned by women" as a category for you (and somewhat populated it), so that should be good to go. For Category:Women record producers, let's go by country (and start by United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Mexico, etc. as the first subcategories). I can help with that. For "Record Producer" page, first add a mention on the talk pages of that article (which you did) and the Record Production WikiProject of your intent, then go ahead with adding a section. Start by mentioning the historic lack of diversity and talk about movements to add more women into the field (other articles have similar sections, use them as templates). As for the list (I am not sure why they chose that publication, but okay), this one is tricky, because "record producer" when referencing produced songs is a saturated field and I would try and choose women with a career that still holds up (rather than rising stars). Use the Grammys and Billboard as a source for those names and put them in the women record producers section. Lyrelyrebird (talk) 14:06, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- Could you help setup the container category Female Record Producer by Nationality (or whatever wording makes sense)? I'm not following how to make it. Also, do you mind looking at the article for Mary Shipman Howard? I created it - I don't think I've submitted it yet (not sure how to tell...). I'm not sure what I need to do next. Actaudio (talk) 23:34, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- Also, I just added notes to some of the names on your list. There's some women on your list who I was updating or fixed categories before we connected. There's some women who I've researched or interviewed in the past so I listed good sources to use (like Kay Rose). If you'd rather I update or leave notes another way, let me know.Actaudio (talk) 09:55, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- I created a few nationality based Women record producer categories (I will make more shortly), their parent categories are BOTH Women record producers AND whatever nationality record producers, let me know if any of the wording seems odd (before they get too populated). As for Mary Shipman Howard, once you publish it it is submitted, and you can look on the Talk Page for updates. My main suggestion is that the Scully Lathe mention is unnecessary (especially since the lathe does not have its own article, and you need to cite that sentence). Otherwise make a separate subsection for the gear she used in her studio. For my own userpage, I understand that it is not quite ordinary to edit someone else's page, but the way you differentiated your edits (like a talk page), I am okay with it. Too many more details might be better suited to the Talk Pages of the respective articles. The articles I mentioned as "To Edit" are there as articles that are not "Green Standard" and so if we have exhausted our sources for them, then that is all we can do for now, I just arbitrarily picked articles that needed TLC as I discovered them.Lyrelyrebird (talk) 16:26, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- Awesome - thanks! I've gone through the first few in the female producers list and I've already found 2 that are not record producers. So some of this may get cleaned up just by getting people into the appropriate categories. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Actaudio (talk • contribs) 04:43, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Women Record Producers
editMoving this part of the conversation here... while trying to recategorize some of the women record producers by country I'm finding half of them aren't even producers or have anything to do with recording other than being recording artists. They're often called record producers without any citation, too. I've added them to a new category called "Women recording artists" (so there's at least record of the ones who changed all together). I'm wondering if there's any groups I need to mention it to...? I could see how people who don't know what a record producer does could confuse the term (to mean an artist who creates music). Actaudio (talk) 07:31, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- This is where we should use the definition of "record producer" from that article, and instead of recording artist (also too broad a term), we should use their main instrument (vocalist, keyboardist, drummer...) and most of these categories already exist. those who make solo EDM could be attached to their respective Electronic musician category as well.Lyrelyrebird (talk) 12:47, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- Totally makes sense. So, almost all of the women I've come across who are producing self-produce (they're not like a Rick Rubin or Linda Perry who produce others). I think it would be interesting to have a category of women who produce other artists (just to see how many there really are). Can you think of a term? Actaudio (talk) 02:10, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
- I did notice something interesting. There is a category called Music production companies, so maybe (I assume most who produce others have some sort of production company, and if their company does not have a page, it can be a redirect or something like that) we can have Music production companies owned by women.Lyrelyrebird (talk) 14:55, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
- Interesting. I'm also wondering if this would be better for a list, too. I see you have Female Record Producers as a list but I guess it could be Female Record Producers (who produce other artists) or something like that... Actaudio (talk) 07:45, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
- I haven't created that list yet (we can name it whatever works), but since lists are only populated by Notable examples, I think it would be best for the stricter definition of producer. Also once the list is created we can reference it in the record production article and put it in the category of women record producers.Lyrelyrebird (talk) 13:59, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

Please stress the importance of references in the Edit-A-Thon
editI think the SoundGirls Edit-A-Thon is a great idea. I am busy Sunday otherwise I would join in.
I have been editing Wikipedia for 10 years now and my personal rule of thumb is to find a reliable reference for every non-grammer change I make. It is a pain in the butt, but it makes Wikipedia better.
For people new to editing Wikipedia I recommend the simple reference markup:
<ref name="RefName">[http://url displayed text]</ref>
With the name="RefName" being optional. I let Wikipedia's editing bots fix it for me. I know people should use the full multi-line reference format, but for me, it is more important to get the reference into the article than for the <ref> tag to be complete. It is the old "lowering the barrier to entry" thing.
Thank you for putting together this Edit-A-Thon Robert.Harker (talk) 17:44, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for the suggestion on the gathering of sources and reference mark-up. Wikipedia's dedication to having accurate sources is why it has been the most important starting point for any research journey, and I want to help that continue. My presentation will emphasize that editors should start small and simple until one gets use to how Wikipedia works. Lyrelyrebird (talk) 15:23, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Women in Red 8th Anniversary
editWomen in Red 8th Anniversary | |
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap! |
