YoMamma6188 checkuser
editHi Luna,
Thanks for checking Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/YoMamma6188/Archive. Were you able to rangeblock the underlying IP ranges, or would there be too much collateral damage? --barneca (talk) 14:32, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- Rangeblocks would probably be a bit much at this point, I'm afraid. – Luna Santin (talk) 11:09, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thought so, didn't hurt to ask to make sure though. Thanks again. --barneca (talk) 15:18, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Adding WhiteKnightLeo to the 67.163.193.239 SPI?
editHello,
I'm confident that WhiteKnightLeo is yet another sock puppet of 67.163.193.239 (once again, it really didn't take her long to come back with a new sock, and she's already being disruptive), so I've been intending to add that account to the SPI... Thing is, I really don't know how, now that the previous case has been archived. From what I've seen, until recently, the bot would archive cases like this, and that seemed convenient enough... But now, I have to admit I'm lost. I can't find any instructions about that anymore.
I'm a bit fuzzy as to how this all works exactly, but while there might be enough evidence for an admin to block that new sock right away, I thought updating the sock list might prove useful in the future (should she come back... and that seems likely)...
By the way, I was a bit surprised when the previous case was closed. While your CheckUser results pretty much proved that Akari Kanzaki and TheBrokenSky were one and the same, you only had a "possible" connection between them and AllPurposeCultural, and 76.120.154.28 wasn't mentioned. I have to admit I was expecting maybe a couple more comments from at least one admin regarding all the other accounts/IPs and the likeliness of their connection with Akari Kanzaki/TheBrokenSky (i.e. the main point of the investigation when it was first posted), but there was just a "completed" and the case was archived, so "wait, that's it?" was my first thought... Is that how it usually goes? Erigu (talk) 03:53, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- WhiteKnightLeo (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki) is a Confirmed match for TheBrokenSky and Akari Kanzaki. Lack of comment on IPs is quite intentional. Used to be that checkuser cases were usually left open for three days (ish) before archival, but people are moving faster these days at WP:SPI -- whether that's a good idea or not, I don't know. – Luna Santin (talk) 06:18, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for the confirmation. That should speed things up. Erigu (talk) 13:53, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- Well, actually, she's been blocked already. ^^;
- Again, thank you. Erigu (talk) 13:55, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for the confirmation. That should speed things up. Erigu (talk) 13:53, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Luna, I do not know you or what your role here is, but that statement is a lie. Why I'm being singled out is obvious, since I've read Erigu's "contributions". However, what I can't figure out, is why you are falsely claiming that my IP matches someone else. The previous person you banned also pointed it out, did they not? You can't create an account and post with a banned IP address. My account was created quite some time after the people you claim I share an IP with were banned. Lying is wrong, and it's especially serious when, by doing so, you are getting someone in trouble for something they are innocent of. WhiteKnightLeo (talk) 06:47, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- You mention your account was created "some time" after AK and TBS were blocked (about two days, to be a touch more precise), which is enough time for an autoblock to expire. If you prefer, I can block the IP for a longer period of time. TBS evaded this issue in much the same manner as you are, now, but I should ask: do you have some alternative explanation for sharing an IP address with those two accounts? – Luna Santin (talk) 07:00, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't. Please stop lying. The other two users you mentioned are still blocked-their IPs both were permanently blocked. They have been for quite some time. I could not have registered under those IPs, and I could not post under them either. I understand that Erigu is your friend, but you really should not lie on his behalf like this. This is at least the second time you have done so. I know what my IP is, and it belongs to me alone. WhiteKnightLeo (talk) 07:05, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Could you do me a favor?
editCould you revert this for me? I think ClueBot is having a bad day. :-D It was just a move. Not sure what triggered the Bot. --User:Woohookitty Diamming fool! 20:18, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Hello,
It looks like we have yet another sockpuppet of 67.163.193.239... Can you confirm? Erigu (talk) 04:19, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- I did notice that one was created shortly after WKL stopped editing, and on the same range, but didn't want to do anything before they started editing. Looks like it's been taken care of, in my absence. – Luna Santin (talk) 10:46, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Indeed. I'm sorry she targeted you. Erigu (talk) 11:19, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

- Interesting. 200.30.68.212 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) in particular seems worth keeping an eye on. – Luna Santin (talk) 21:15, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi Luna, been busy for a very long time so didnt notice the Andy Eastham deletion. Was there a specific issue as opposed to the general guidelines you referenced, none of which I could quite see the relevance of. I haven't re-instated, just chatting. Regards RP —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rprout520 (talk • contribs) 23:58, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
- My, that was quite a while ago, I think just a few months after I became an admin. :) At the time I was fairly active in clearing out the proposed deletion categories (it's designed to be a simple process: one user tags a page, and if no one objects inside five days an admin evaluates it for deletion). Looking back at it, now, I might have done better to leave it, or send it to articles for deletion (a more involved process, where multiple users discuss the page for a few days, to better arrive at a consensus decision). If you wanted to try that route, I'd encourage you to find some reliable sourcing for the article's content -- the more, the better! -- but would be happy to restore the article for AfD, or get you a copy of the original text, on request. – Luna Santin (talk) 21:13, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
- I did email him at the time to confirm the accuracy. He did make one change relating to academic letters. His prominence in Europe was pretty high when I wrote the article because millions of users became members of the SmartGroups service (he was a founder and technical director), and he also wrote most of the code for the Faulkes Telescope project which UK school children use. It was a $10m gift from Dill Faulkes to UK school kids so they could access a real telescope, and I think is now sponsored by one of the Google founders. Its a 3m research class telescope on Maui. Note I worked with Andy Eastham for a few years although have moved away from the UK years ago and don't now have direct contact. What would you suggest? Re-instate, or submit for extended delete, or just leave deleted? rprout520 (talk) 19:30, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Notification after blocking
editSorry if you just haven't gotten around to it yet, but is there a reason you haven't notified 208.123.40.207 (talk · contribs) of your block? I'm just idly curious. Thanks for blocking them, by the way. -kotra (talk) 19:38, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Glad I could help. :) In the case of simple vandalism blocks like this one, I usually don't see much purpose in leaving a block notice -- the user will be informed of their circumstances by MediaWiki:Blockedtext each time they try to edit (where a talk message can be missed or incomplete, the system message is very clear and will repeat itself as often as is necessary). I do get asked about this from time to time, and in particular I do try to leave notice for any complex block, but so far as I know this is acceptable practice still. – Luna Santin (talk) 00:15, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. I ask because our blocking policy says "Administrators should also notify users when blocking them by leaving a message on their user talk page unless they have a good reason not to." I'm not sure what reason the writers of that bit have for it; maybe it's for the benefit of other users to see if the user has been blocked, particularly if they don't know about the block log page (buried as it is in tiny text on the contribs page). After some digging, I think that's basically it; the text was changed during this discussion (and the next 3 sections) were happening. Anyway, it's not a big deal either way, feel free to use your own discretion of course. -kotra (talk) 03:01, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ahh, the language in that clause is a bit more stringent than I remembered. :) Thanks for the discussion link, too. At the very least, I should start looking into scripted means of leaving these notices. – Luna Santin (talk) 19:45, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

editHello again; could you verify that Acsociety (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki) and Ian_Rons (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki) are not from the same IP. During discussions, they both referred to me in the same misspelled, mis-wiki-marked up manner here and here. (Look for Qualer). It could be just shoddy cut and paste, or it could be the same person. Thanks. Quaeler (talk) 21:57, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Fragments of Jade - User talk:Do You Know Oyashiro-sama?
editWell, I certainly had my suspicions. ^_^;
Guts' feeling or CheckUser, if I may ask?
What about 216.134.254.46 though? The IP doesn't look familiar (to me, anyway), but the timing of the whole thing is a bit fishy, isn't it? Erigu (talk) 19:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
- Based purely on technical evidence, DYKO is Likely/ Confirmed for FoJ, and 216.134 appears to be Unrelated. Sometimes people will try editing from other locations to avoid detection, but it hasn't been a pattern for this one, yet. – Luna Santin (talk) 19:41, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reply.
- So she might have asked a friend's help for this one (assuming Do You Know Oyashiro-sama? really is the friend 216.134.254.46 mentioned)? If only she could spend less effort on this and more on being honest about the whole masquerade...
- Anyway, thank you again for dealing with the situation so quickly. Erigu (talk) 19:48, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
- Next Likely match looks to be FancyUlala (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki). – Luna Santin (talk) 20:53, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- Urgh. Thank you for the heads up. Erigu (talk) 04:35, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
CU followup
editHey there. You handled the checkuser in this case - would you mind taking a look at a couple of accounts? It looks like someone is playing silly buggers with a bunch of socks that only blank User talk:UpmenUKK, which was one of the socks busted last time. The most recent ones are Grtnck (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki), Mitziluu3 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki) and PACOCW (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki). If there's an underlying IP that could be blocked, that might wake them up, or at least if you could point out any other socks that would be great. Thanks! Tony Fox (arf!) 06:21, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
- I've blocked several accounts that appear to be related, here:

- Headis (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki)

- Mitziluu3 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki)
- Didn't turn up any other obvious ones. Rangeblock probably not possible, here. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:12, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Request for assistance with page protection
editAt the sockpuppet investigation [1] for User:Television Radio, you suggested semi protection as a solution to this IP jumping vandals activities. After the most recent wave of this vandalism, I requested page semi-protection for the affected articles, and was declined. Is there any chance you may intervene to help stop this vandals activities? Wuhwuzdat (talk) 18:25, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
The IP has been the source of racial attacks and vandalism for 3 years from User:Premier, the contributions during that period the ip appears to be used by just the one person. IMHO enabling account creation is only going to see further sockpuppetting, if you want to WP:AGF please add the Indigenous Australians and associated articles to your watchlist. Unprotect Furry fandom?
editYou protected Furry fandom almost a year ago per bumping up to semi, for a moment (feel free to change back, if I forget! I guess it's a vandalism target, but it editing seems rather stagnant. Lettings new users in might help. --Apoc2400 (talk) 16:40, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ack -- looks like I did forget. Just the sort of fluke that's now prevented by independent expiry times for move and edit protection. I've taken the semiprot off, for now, so we can see how things go. – Luna Santin (talk) 00:04, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- I would like you to reprotect this article indefinitely. Regular vandalism from IPs and throwaway accounts has resumed and show no sign of stopping - indeed, they form the vast majority of edits since the change in protection. GreenReaper (talk) 04:22, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
- I've semi-protected for three months, for the time being; happy to evaluate the situation again, once that expires. I generally prefer to see some community discussion before protecting an article indefinitely, but have no objection if someone else does so in the meantime. – Luna Santin (talk) 21:29, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- Fair enough - thanks for the help! Ideally we'll have made it a good article by then, which would have slightly more justification for protection. GreenReaper (talk) 22:32, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Talk page vandalism revisited
editHoping you can direct me to the correct place. My talk page has been vandalized three times by an anonymous user, whom I suspect to be User:Waraji, (here, here and here ) in the past two days. This user was the subject of a Sockpuppet investigation and banned as a result—you were the admin on the issue. This in the only user who has previously vandalized my page and the only user I have had any challenges with, thus my belief that he is the culprit.
How do I go about getting this case reopened and request that these new IP addresses 12.50.228.121 and 216.13.88.86 be checked and blocked if appropriate?
Thanks -- btphelps (talk) (contribs) 14:40, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- resolved for now by others, thanks anyhow. -- btphelps (talk) (contribs) 05:59, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/USSoccerCulture
editThank you for your attention on this check user investigation. I am not familiar with a "duck test" but I made a section on the admin noticeboard and someone else gave a 3rr warning. Hopefully this will be sufficient. Apologies if the check user was premature. Noticed after creating it that it may be best for "dozens" of edits not just one particular situation.Cptnono (talk) 01:26, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, sorry. :) I forget sometimes whether esoteric terms need to be clarified; the duck test is a shorthand way of referring to the old "if it quacks like a duck..." adage. It was certainly a good idea to involve more users/admins at that point, and it looks to me like you've done so effectively. Hooopefully they'll take a hint and get over on the talk page, but we'll have to wait and see. – Luna Santin (talk) 01:29, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- No worries, should have googled it faster. Thanks for the info and comments.Cptnono (talk) 01:34, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello
editHow come you indefinitely blocked LetsdrinkTea? Buɡboy52.4 (talk) 17:15, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
- As I mentioned in their block log, they appear to have been running multiple accounts abusively, including malicious edits under Lambmeat (talk · contribs) and anonymously. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:31, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- First, just out of curiosity, how do find sockpuppeteers? And I new him well, I never notice him making any malicious edits, he even helped me find a script that could of obviously been used for mass vandalism, he even warned me not to hand it out, because of it's mass vandalism potentials. Is there ANY possible way to remove the indefinite ban? Buɡboy52.4 (talk) 21:56, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- In this particular case, the block is based on checkuser evidence; I felt a check was warranted after Lambmeat (talk · contribs) repeated a tactic an anon user had used only a few days prior, a tactic which suggested prior familiarity with Wikipedia norms. LDT turned up during that check. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:48, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- I am not the same person as "Lambmeat". If you look on my talk page you can see the full story. 173.66.142.101 (talk) 15:14, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- If not you, then who? I do like to assume good faith, but I'm having trouble accepting the classic "someone else did it" story, given what I've seen. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:01, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- Like I said, some idiot from my dorm. Please consider this case by using behavioral evidence, rather than circumstantial technical data. Special:Contributions/Blah28948 Special:Contributions/Lambmeat. 173.66.142.101 (talk) 20:18, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- Right, and the behavioral evidence shows we have a sockmaster who knows how Wikipedia works, probably had a good-hand account previously, and who for some reason or another is disrupting the project. This most recent wave of trouble begins just two days after your RTV request, and you quite suddenly return to activity the moment your account(s) are blocked. There's more, particularly relating to the timing of your edits, but I'd prefer to discuss that with another checkuser if it's needed. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:37, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

- The account was created before the RTV. I had to vanish temporarily due to an incident in real life. And who says that the person in question is not disrupting wikipedia right now, and hasn't before Lambmeat was used? I am a fairly long term editor with a good reputation, there are many people you can ask. 173.66.142.101 (talk) 23:20, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

this place not a BB contention
editI disagree that BB is somethign we can't aspire to do, only better. I agree taht over time salience affords greater concision but being online allows immediate distribution and something should be done to prevent reckless reversion from masking controversy. The current page should automatically be flagged as profoundly as prior versions as JUST A VERSION. An aggregate of attempted additions shuld not have to be manually almost impossibly obtained and it's not obvious enough if possible at all how to search reverted contributions.
By reverted I do mean that and any deletion of entire clauses not rewritten etc.
Content contributers who are time starved need to be able to contribute with no knowledge of cyclopolitics here. There is no wicki BBS. Perhaps the needs of instant content creation r not compatible with your policy allowing instant content creation. Why not have a hot topic page that does not require something true being said elsewhere before there?
Systematic bias is not as perilising a curse as paid suppression of truth. It is too easy to work this place to protect corporate interest as the numerous failed efforts to document undisputed/able information about 'yahoo' demonstrate. I want to be able to find others contributions, others who may have facts not found in time by search engine or via there search forms.
I do not understand the bit about blocking anonymous editing. Are all anonymisers already blocked? How is it that no hint of people being locked out of there access to there files is often absent here and those who suppress this are not at risk of losing there ability to do that? Again the issue is time. Why not allow more then one appeal? Why not require a paid reverter's reversion be reviewed automatically given the unpaid contributor can not afford to police there work but you clearly have plenty of volunteers to do that?
Truly where is the info about paid reverters.......... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.196.20.152 (talk) 00:46, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- Reporting on current events is best done by news media, not an encyclopedia; as a tertiary source, we can and should repeat notable reports from reliable secondary sources, but we should not go out and research on our own. I'm sure you'd have more luck getting this posted if you took a moment to find some reliable sources. – Luna Santin (talk) 19:44, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

- I must admit some confusion. Did you mean the userpage, or the account itself? If it's not your account, why are you asking that it be deleted? How are you so sure "no one can use it"? – Luna Santin (talk) 00:06, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
- The account, also Popsucketry and Itsnemo. All three are marked "has been blocked indefinitely." -MBHiii (talk) 16:21, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- Considering Wikipedia:Account deletion specifically mentions accounts aren't deleted under normal circumstances, even under request from the account owner, I'm having trouble seeing why you, as a self-proclaimed third party, seem so comfortable asking for such a deletion. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:46, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

This Shapeshifter vandalism
editAny ideas on what to do about this idiot calling himself "The Shapeshifter"? If you look at the history for the article redirect page from Inept, this person has been serial vandalising that page along with an apparently random selection of other articles, talk pages and templates for almost 6 months. Blocking each individual IP for 24 hours doesn't seem to do much good, because he just starts up on a new IP the next day, as he did going from User talk:221.220.183.23 to his new incarnation at User talk:222.130.127.165. Those are just the 2 most recent IP's, from a selection going back to December 2008. Age Happens (talk) 20:14, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- I've already set up some temporary rangeblocks, and can revisit those as needed. Since this person seems to want attention, and will probably stick around as long as they keep getting some, paying them any heed beyond what is necessary is probably a non-starter. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:44, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Yamh91
editMy original sockpuppet report, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Yamh91, got merged into Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Brexx, even though I didn't think there was much evidence to support that. You confirmed that lack of relationship, but otherwise, your comment on Yamh91 in the Brexx report was a bit cryptic: are Yamh91 and the IP I reported, 189.237.105.162, related?—Kww(talk) 19:05, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
- Intentionally cryptic, I'm afraid; privacy policy is pretty stringent about the circumstances in which I'm able to confirm someone's IP, and I don't think this cuts it. I'll take some action on my own if abuse-y behavior continues, though. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:22, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, can you check on User talk:213.243.30.8? It was blocked under this rangeblock. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:50, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like the same person the block is pointed at (pretty quiet range, lately, other than that person); I wouldn't particularly object if anyone wanted to create an account for users impacted by this block, though, as the sockpuppets I'm after are painfully obvious for the most part. – Luna Santin (talk) 06:52, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Checkuser?
editSee here. I'm not sure whether it's appropriate here. There's a background of disruption regarding the Rachel Corrie article. I think it would be helpful to know which disruptive editor is socking in this case. Enigmamsg 20:05, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hard to say. Nothing obvious lurking under the hood. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:52, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the check anyway. I guess they took extra steps to avoid being detected. I could theorize on who it is, but it's not much without checkuser evidence to back it up. Unfortunately, the sock's actions resulted in a long, drawn-out DRV. Enigmamsg 03:07, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

editThanks again Luna for mocking up the dateswitch idea. I've got a couple new ideas for template functions, and I'm interested in what you might think. -Stevertigo 06:47, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Case question
editOn this case, were there any other confirmed socks and were you able to confirm that all the listed ones are Rusty_Trombone? One of those had been tagged as a sock of User:GENIUS(4th_power). This user you "confirmed" as being a sock of User:Azviz is requesting unblocking. He's claiming to be an unrelated user on the same workplace wireless network. You seemed to have some reservations about the finding yourself; has another checkuser looked into it? Care to comment about your reservations in the "confirmed" conclusion? Thanks. Mangojuicetalk 03:03, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- If they could name some articles they contributed to, previously, or if they could explain why they just happened to register shortly after the last sockpuppet was blocked, and why the sockmaster just happened to stop registering new socks at the same time, I'd feel a lot more comfortable assuming good faith. – Luna Santin (talk) 11:38, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

A note re: Talk:Rorschach test/2009 consensus review
editPlease be advised that I have recently conducted a review of the Rorschach test (formerly Rorschach inkblot test) talk page and archives. At some point, you have commented on the issue of the display and/or placement of the Rorschach inkblot image. Based on my understanding of your comment(s), I have placed you into one of three categories. I am issuing this note so that you can review how I have placed you, and to signal if this is an appropriate placement and/or to make known your current thoughts on this matter. You may either participate in discussion at the article talk page or leave a note at my talk page; but to keep things in one place, you should also clarify at Talk:Rorschach test/2009 consensus review/addendum. Longer statements may be made here or quick clarifications/affirmations based on several pre-written statements can be made here. Best regards, –xenotalk 14:56, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Ok, sure, don't really know what to say to that exactly, except I don't really think my neighbor did it, it was just coincidence he was on his laptop (probably). The One & Only Fools and Horses
editHe's back, and asking about your recent block-extension [2] pablohablo. 19:24, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
- Account was using open proxies, specifically including some of those used by "joker" spam accounts. As the account was already blocked indefinitely, I don't see how my disabling email could be called an "extension". – Luna Santin (talk) 20:21, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Apologies if that was unclear, I meant that the scope was extended, not the duration. pablohablo. 20:49, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- No problem. :) If someone more familiar with this account is of the opinion they're unrelated to the recent spam problems, I'd have no problem with someone disabling the email block. It's probably moot, anyway... – Luna Santin (talk) 20:55, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

An old conversation
editJust pointing out the confluence of this old report, this warning from you, and this edit. Strangely enough, despite his original intent to edit war, he didn't actually revert my previous edit completely: he just partially reverted and took the opportunity to call me a vandal again.—Kww(talk) 22:57, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hm... I was thinking over appropriate responses, but now that I look at it I see the situation has gone ahead without me. x.x Looks like Yamh91 has been blocked for 72 hours; also looks like the SPI case for them has been merged with the one for Brexx. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:57, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Special:Contributions/189.248.23.156 in conjunction with this edit history is damning. I argue for an indef on Yamh91 and as big of a rangeblock as you feel is reasonable.—Kww(talk) 01:28, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia:ANI#Unresolved - 66.190.29.150 could be the return of User:Ernham?
editHello Luna Santin. See WP:Requests for checkuser/Case/Ernham.
You blocked the IP for six months back in 2008 based on that case. Ernham liked car racing, and this IP has edited Slick tyre, which is a tire used in racing. EdJohnston (talk) 20:53, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Hi Luna, I've unblocked now . Thanks to your note I think that they see the error and I think won't do it again (if not there is always a reblock option as you say). I'll leave a note on their page - Peripitus (Talk) 06:42, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
- I have some concerns with this unblocking, given that it is the second time the user has been blocked for creating the same offensive redirect. Following the first block (where he claimed not to have made the redirect), he should have been well aware that it was not appropriate - and yet he did it again. He's also been making a fair number of problematic page moves, despite warnings, and as such I find the claims that led to the unblock somewhat suspect. Just my two cents. --Ckatzchatspy 08:11, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hmmm... could be that you're right. I do intend to check back in on this one, periodically, for what it's worth. I know it's a bit of a gamble, but the day I'm no longer willing to take that gamble from time to time is probably the day I should hang up my hat -- please don't take that as a comment directed at anyone, it's just that I worry about getting too jaded, myself. – Luna Santin (talk) 08:51, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Unblock Request
editStrontiumsulfate has send me an unblock request via e-mail. As the checkuser who handled the previous sockpuppet case, I was wondering if you could obtain more information through the IPs, such as geolocation. Recurring sockpuppets
editI'm loath to start up another SPI, but see this (temporary link). The user attracts socks that imitate his/her username in some way. The socks are almost certainly the same user. Can something be done about the underlying IPs? Article history and (probably incomplete) sock category. Oh, and sorry for bothering you all the time with requests! Enigmamsg 06:11, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- Oop, sorry to take so long replying, I must have missed this. Looks like User:CrapFromSpace? is related to User:BusyBody'sBane and User:TripeDetector; I do note they're using an unusual number of apparently static IPs from varying ranges, but if it were open proxies I'd expect to see a different pattern (not set up to proxy check at the moment). User:DWHermann is coming in on a different IP, bearing the previous note in mind, but behaviorally they look very much like a sock to me. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:29, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- So all we can do is block the accounts as they pop up? Enigmamsg 01:31, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Highspeed
editI have already commented on the block numerous times. If Highspeed is Biaswarrior, it doesn't matter who is involved or not; it's sockpuppetry and gets a block w/o warning. If he isn't, then I'd no prior interaction with him while he vandalized my page, a clear reason for a block as endorsed recently at ArbCom. There have already been 2 threads at ANI and a side discussion between us doesn't advance the ball much. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 15:29, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- You are certainly persistent and to the point of uncivil. I have stated the reasons for the block. You're a checkuser, you can tell whose socking whom (although where biaswarrior is concerned your CU seems errorprone or is it something else?), but you'd rather perpetuate the drama, which is more like dramamongering and not very much like someone trying to build an encyclopedia. At least one other admin refused to unblock him - and as you'll note, the first comment I made on the template at Monterey County, California was after I was invited to do so, well after Highspeed was blocked, so your timeline accusations are pure coatrack. Since the drama seems to have subsided, I think we have little further to say to one another. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 15:34, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Giving you a chance to present your case is drama mongering? If I'm persistent, it's because I feel the block you set here was so egregiously wrong that it seriously risked chasing off a longtime editor; that's not something I'll ever take lightly, and it's not something anyone should. I'm also concerned it's going to happen again, given your apparent attitude. I gave you several chances to back up your accusations of sockpuppetry, collusion, wikistalking, or even racism, but you didn't -- whose fault is that, exactly? Mine? I see that you've done a lot of good work for this project, and I do appreciate that, but I'm not one to sit idly by while someone gets slapped with a lifetime ban for reasons that make no sense to me. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:19, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- You're a checkuser, if Highspeed isn't Biaswarrior, you know that. Rather than play your cards close to the vest, you could have said so, unblocked him and done. But you never said he wasn't - which given the heat you generated would have been nice ammo for you if true - that's what I call dramamongering. By the time I left at the end of the day Friday - I left it in Nyttend's capable hands and even he wouldn't unblock Highspeed. I left the reasons, which are now explained by some browser malfunction that is obscure at best and which a friend of mine at work tried with the screwed-up browser and could not modify anything on my talk page that was prior to where he hit new section or clicked on the last section - only if someone wanted to edit the whol page and then ran the screwed-up browser and didn't see what they were doing, only then could Highspeed's edits make sense - which they still don't but as I've said I'm not technical. Will you always be making allowances for some screwed up browser problem before you issue blocks? Hmmmm..... Carlossuarez46 (talk) 01:28, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- I ask again: how is giving you a chance to present your case drama mongering? Checkuser is not omniscient, and it can't prove a negative. If Biaswarrior is hopping connections, I'd certainly like to know. Obviously you felt you had compelling evidence -- why else would you have so swiftly blocked a longtime user? Locked their talk page? Skipped even a cursory filing at WP:SPI? And I wanted to believe you, to hear your evidence and your reasoning, since I'm sorry to say that the only obvious alternatives are to believe some very unfortunate things about my fellow administrator's thought process. I don't see how your inability or unwillingness to make your case is my fault.
Looking back over my comments, I see that they're peppered with statements like "this isn't adding up", "I'd prefer to see some more solid justification", "I don't see any evidence of that", or otherwise noting a lack of evidence; you should bear in mind the implications when a checkuser says that sort of thing. Perhaps I could have been more clear -- sorry if I should have been -- but please remember that checkuser cannot prove a negative and that I wanted sorely to believe that a more solid explanation was forthcoming from you. I like to believe that my fellow users know what they're doing.
Finally, I feel no obligation to defend Highspeed's mucked up edit at your talk page. You've said several times that the block was for sockpuppetry, and I'm not a big fan of trading one bad block reason for another: even if I accept that the edit was malicious vandalism, the appropriate response to that is a warning, and a block if the problem continues, not an immediate block of indefinite length with a talk page lock to prevent appeal. – Luna Santin (talk) 04:59, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, and a question
editSir, I justed wanted to express my appreciation for your willingness to hear me out in addressing the issues raised against me. I also am thankful for the thoughtful consideration of fellow admins Lifebaka, Sandstein, Anthony.bradbury and jpgordon. And a request for assistance: what can I do appropriately regarding the categories & template on my user page alleging that I'm a sockpuppet? May I remove it myself, or do I need to start a discussion on a project page in order to get a third-party admin to remove it?? Thanks for any help you can provide! Highspeed (talk) 07:20, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Like they say, many people like sausage, not many people like a sausage factory. ;) Unfortunately things can get a bit hectic in the meat grinder. Sorry I couldn't have replied sooner, it looks like Anthony's removed the template for you in the meantime. Glad to see you're still with us. – Luna Santin (talk) 20:21, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
KZEY AfD
editUser:Aliveatoms has created an AfD on station KZEY, in a pointed attempt to irritate a situation with User:RadioFan. Apparently RadioFan nom'd a page made by Aliveatoms for deletion. Aliveatoms actions are the subject of an ANI post. Would it be possible (if not, that's cool) to speedy keep the AfD on KZEY? I have warned Aliveatoms about making pointed AfDs already, just don't feel confortable closing the AfD at this point, as I am pretty deeply involed in the situation. - NeutralHomer • Talk • 05:37, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Seems I missed you after you signed off. AfD was closed by another admin. Take Care...NeutralHomer • Talk • 15:54, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Oop, yeah. Glad to see that seems to have been resolved, though. I had spotted the AN(I?) thread last night and meant to take a look at it, but something came up that needed my attention. – Luna Santin (talk) 19:58, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Geogre motions statement
editHi Luna. Thanks for the statement at the Geogre motions section. It is a bit unwieldy to keep responding in the arbitrator section to minor points, so I thought I'd come here first. You said "for as much as two months now". The first I became aware of this was 27 June. There were people on and off the committee who knew before then (which is what complicates matters, as it is still not clear who knew what when), but as far as I know that was the first time it came to the attention of the whole committee (it was the first time I had become aware of it). We did indeed take a fair amount of time over posting the initial motion, but if you read my statement, you will see that Geogre was e-mailed within days (2 July, 5 days later, less than a week) of the full committee being aware of this and realising that something needed to be done. Before we took action, we wanted, as we always do, to get the other side of the story. That was over a holiday weekend in the USA. We heard back from Geogre on 5 July and some action was immediately taken at that point (the block of Utgard Loki). The delay between then and when this motion was posted (23 July) was about 18 days. Overall, this is less than a month, and certainly not the two months you mention - could you correct that? There are reasons for that delay which I hope will one day be fully explained (as it relates to general points about case requests), but I can't really go into details here. In other words, the delay was due to internal matters - we had various drafted public statements or motions ready at various times, but progress was very slow, in part because other matters were distracting us. I personally didn't think that this needed to be rushed, and there was no emergency here. I do accept it could have been handled faster, but there have been similar incidents in the past that took as long, if not longer to resolve. We are aware that some of the stuff we do looks like it takes ages, but while we do try to avoid things dragging on, we do also want to make sure we don't rush into action that we later regret. I hope this helps to explain in part why things took so long. Carcharoth (talk) 08:30, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
- I was coming to your talk page to say more or less the same as Carcharoth. The full Committee was not aware of the details of the until the end of June. Much less than 2 months. The matter was complicated by process discussions about the "best" way to investigate abusive socking, and then carry out sanctions. There are several important overlapping principals that need to be considered when ArbCom addresses cases. At the top of the list is giving an user a fair chance to respond to allegations. There can be various interpretations about what constitutes a fair hearing. Attempts to get consensus among arbs to agree to a process resulted in delay in this case. Unfortunate, but a necessary part of decision making by Committee. I hope that explanation helps. FloNight♥♥♥ 16:41, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
- I've edited my statement, which I think reflects some of what the two of you have pointed out -- let me know if I missed anything. I appreciate the clarifications. I can't say that I envy your role in the process, so I do hope my support for the committee remains clear in my actions. – Luna Santin (talk) 00:06, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
editThank you for understanding! I always requested to at least delete my account, unblock my IP or account. But You are so fair and just, i hope you are rewarded and known for the best and fair and very good Administrator! Thanks! SO Much!!! But the only problem left is to unblock my IP, i don't care if no one unblocks this account, but my IP. You see, i did not harass that guy Todd, my friend used my other computer and was saying mean things to people. I do feel responsible for letting him even use my computer, but this is the present, that was the past. If you can do, so king Administrator, just unblock the IP address for my other computer, please, if possible. And i will make sure to contribute positive contributions and non-biased, non-opinion, and good contributions for now on! (i not only got blocked for for my friends harassments, but i also made a mistake: show my bias and opinions, which i WILL NEVER DO IN WIKIPEDIA, NOR IN LIFE, PROMISE!!! A rangeblock on 65.49.128.0/17 (block range · block log (global) · WHOIS (partial)) might be advisable if semi-protection won't work; given the number of articles that are potential targets, it doesn't look hopeful to me. There are some other users on the range, so anon-only and a generic message like {{anonblock}} (with a <!-- hidden comment -->)would be a must. – Luna Santin (talk) 00:28, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

- I think the rangeblock might be necessary. 65.49.162.41, the IP that is connected to Dingbat from the checkuser above, was back at it again tonight after Enigmaman's 31 hour block. Kralizec! blocked the IP for 1 week, but I think the rangeblock is the way to go in this case. If the 31 hour block didn't stop him, the 1 week block isn't either and they can just switch IP addresses, so the block would be moot. I asked J.delanoy to do the block and he said I should ask a checkuser familiar with the case, that would be you. Only way to desysop? maybe not...
editSee here; (yet another) proposal for a desysop process that appears to have some (guarded) support. I'll be moving it into projectspace soonish as a full-on proposal.
