Mexican birds
editHi Logical! Glad to see another person interested in birds on Wikipedia. We've got a pretty active Wikiproject (see WP:BIRDS), if you're interested in joining. One suggestion re: the photos you're adding; it's helpful to those who might use the list if the birds shown are in plumages that they'd be in while in Mexico — and you've shown a few (e.g. Red-throated Loon, Horned Grebe, etc.) in breeding plumage even though they're never found in Mexico in that plumage. It would be better to use winter plumage for those, since that's what birders in Mexico would be seeing! Drop me a note if you have any questions — and thanks for all your efforts! MeegsC | Talk 21:55, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hey Meegs, Thanks for the tip; I wasn't aware of that info. I guess you could say I'm an amateur bird lover. I'm very interested in them but haven't learned a lot about them yet. That's the beauty of Wikipedia though. When I saw that there were no pictures on that page, I felt compelled to add some. If I have time I will work on changing those that you mentioned. However, I would not mind at all if you or anyone else worked on correcting them. Thanks again. Best, talk) 05:31, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yep, some pictures are definitely better than no pictures! Hope you don't mind if some others from the project get involved too. That's what often happens; one person gets started and everybody else jumps in! MeegsC | Talk 18:12, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
- Don't mind at all; I encourage it! LogicalFinance33 (talk) 22:36, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

editHi,
This is a more personal welcome than the above template. Thanks for taking a crack at Guvernadur. I couldn't make heads or tails of it either. -- Whpq (talk) 14:03, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
Hey Whpq. Thanks! I'm just learning the ropes of Wikipedia and enjoying it very much. I've been going through the pages needing copyedit to put some of my English skills from high school and college to good use. Although there are several I come across, like that page, where I don't even know where to start. Thanks for the greeting. LogicalFinance33 (talk) 05:34, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
Simoya Campbell
editHi,
Well spotted on the Simoya Campbell article. She doesn't meet our notability guidelines including WP:ATHLETE. I just wanted to let you know that when proposing deletion, one should also notify the article creator. There's a handy bit of text that you can cut and paste that shows up after you propose deletion. Don't worry about this case. I've notified the article creator. Happy editting. Cheers! -- Whpq (talk) 18:38, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
- Awesome. Thank you for the tip. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about editing, wikifying, and such. Tips from veterans are extremely helpful. I'd rather learn from someone who knows what they're doing than waste time trying to figure it out myself. So if you ever have any more advice, I'm all ears. editBeauty
editHi. On a quick glance at your comment on Talk:Beauty I thought you were serious so I made a comment. It seems I didn't really see anything past NPOV - didn't see the second sentence. Then on second reading I saw that you were kidding. I should read posts twice before weighing in. One of my favourites is on the vagina talk page (Dec'09) an IP arguing tongue in cheek that it would be more encyclopaedic to show a horse's vagina as well as human ones. Anyways, I hope you're enjoying yourself here. If there's anything drop me a line. Best. SlightSmile 02:41, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

editInvitation from the Guild of Copy Editors
The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters. |

Patrolling
editThanks for catching Le Costume Historique. As you found, it was completely a copyvio. But we don't PROD copyvios like this--they are much more serious problems than mere lack of notability (which it might even meet if additional refs were looked for) What we do is delete them via speedy deletion -- use the {{db-copyvio}} tag. (Or were you confused because the publication was a 19th century book and thus out of copyright -- true, but the blurb about it that was inserted was still copyright.) You might want to check WP:Deletion policy to see the priorities: Abuse of the subject, vandalism, and copyvio are the most serious & shouldn't be passed over. DGG ( talk ) 05:55, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks DGG. I'm still fairly new to editing WP and am learning the policies so I didn't know that it deserved speedy deletion over proposed deletion. Now I do :). Thanks for the help and advice. LogicalFinance33 (talk) 22:53, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
Jud Wilhite
editFYI, I happened to peek at your contributions list and that led me to the article on Jud Wilhite. It's tone looked all wrong so I searched some phrases and found that the whole article was just composed of text copied from copyrighted sources. since there was no clean version to revert to I deleted it outright. However if you would like to recreate it from scratch you're welcome to do so. Will Beback talk 21:39, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
- That's ok I was just doing some copyediting and clean up of various pages. I didn't have any attachment to that page. It looks like it is still around though: Jud Wilhite, and the only sources are from the website for the church that he works at. LogicalFinance33 (talk) 01:07, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- Right, I meant to follow up with you and forgot. I looked again at the history and found the copyvios were added fairly recently, so I restored all of the article up to that point. Yes, it's crap, but at least it's our crap. It looks like the man or his church are notable enough for an article. But that article needs a lot of work. Maybe stubbing it would be the best solution. Will Beback talk 01:12, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, definitely needs a lot of work. It seems to have the proper tags though so as long as it's notable, I'm sure it will improve with time. LogicalFinance33 (talk) 01:15, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

If you have a spare moment, please join and wikify an article or tell your friends. Thanks! Note: The drive starts December 1, and you can sign up today! |

Films
editHi. No worries from what I gather I agree with most of the nominations. I believe I started them from an imdb list beginning with A so I might have caught some non notable ones. Usually a google book search will indicate whether its notable or not. But some more recent films and TV series from lesser anglo countries may have less coverage.. On a more positive note there are some more likely notable television films on Finnish wikipedia which should be translated.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:50, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

A few notes on tagging and external links deletion
editHi LogicalFinance33, while I certainly appreciate your efforts in trying to clean up articles I'd like to leave you a few notes. Using the {{technical}} tag should mean that an article contains technical details that are not accessible to the laymen but should be so. Keep in mind that for technical articles more in-depth information is quite warranted, as long as more introductory text, possibly of interest to a wider audience, is provided. If you still think that parts of an article are too technical and need simpler explanations, post on the talk page. {{wikify}} is intended for articles that are considerably deviating from our Manual of Style rules, such as using plain HTML syntax or unformatted text. Do not use the tag to point our minor issues (that you may easily and quickly correct on your own). Finally, please read WP:EL on our guidelines regarding external links. While it is certainly true that 3GPP Long Term Evolution is way over any reasonable number of external links, simply cutting the list down to a single entry is certainly not the best solution either. Note that only few of these entries may be considered actual spam. I will go through the list some time the next days and trim it down. Again, such issues should be brought up at the talk page. Hope that helps, and all the best with your future edits! Nageh (talk) 00:55, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- I must have missed this message when it was posted. I just noticed it now. Thanks for the advice. I guess I didn't have a good enough understanding of the technical tag so I will be more careful with using that one in the future. As for the wikify tag, I didn't realize it was that strict. When I go through the Category of articles that need to be wikified, I see a lot of them that just need to be formatted with section titles and have wikilinks added. Do you think the tag is just overused? The definition at WP:wikify says along with what you mentioned that to wikify could also include other markup like "standard headings and layout, including the addition of infoboxes and other templates, or bolding/italicizing of text". But like you said, those are things I can usually do on my own, and I usually try to. I recently started trying out external link cleanup so I admit I still have plenty to learn there. So thanks again for the advice; much appreciated! LogicalFinance33 (talk) 07:32, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- There really is no good definition for the use of the wikify tag. AWB, a program for fixing articles, will put a Wikify tag if there are no wikilinks. (I think it is two wikilinks or less, but not certain). With no good definition for wikify, you see all sorts of uses for the tag and it does get overused. Nageh has the best definition of any.
- WP:FACEBOOK has some info on what social networks can be used in the external links section. The #1 spam in references and external links I see is links to Itunes and Amazon.
- If you have any questions, give me a yell on my talk page. Wikipedia has all sorts of rules and it can get daunting (plus the rules change). I'm always learning new things. Bgwhite (talk) 08:25, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks guys. With this new info I'll probably be doing more removing of wikify tags than adding them from now on. LogicalFinance33 (talk) 00:23, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
You left a message at the article's talk page. To give you an answer, no, having an article on another Wikipedia site doesn't make one automatically notable on the English Wikipedia. The article may or may not be notable on another wiki (it might haven't been caught yet) and different Wikis have their own rules.
English references are preferred. However, if there are none to be found, a ref in another language is acceptable. Bgwhite (talk) 19:36, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response. So far, that page only has one ref (in French, so it's tough to verify as reliable). I'd say at the least it could use the notability tag. I guess we can wait and see if there are any French/English speaking Wikipedians who can shed some light on it before going as far as proposing deletion. LogicalFinance33 (talk) 03:50, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- You forgot that you put ISBN numbers on all the books listed in the article. Somebody who has written/edited that amount of books does on the surface make someone notable. I don't think a notable tag should be added to it. Bgwhite (talk) 09:04, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't really follow that first sentence. I didn't put (or forget to put?) ISBN numbers in the article. I only did some clean up and added tags to it. I noticed someone else wrote on the talk page and noted that they didn't find any sources that convinced them it was notable. But I don't feel too strongly toward the article, so I don't feel a need to take it to AfD or anything. LogicalFinance33 (talk) 07:17, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- Ooops, sorry. I thought you wrote the article. I was trying to be nice from an author's point of view. From an editors point of view, the article is in gray land on what to do. So, I usually say use your best judgement, which is what you did. I think I'm losing it. I'll just go in the corner and mumble to myself. Bgwhite (talk) 08:11, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- Haha don't worry about it. You're comments and advice have been very helpful. I always learn the most from talking to other editors rather than looking up stuff here. LogicalFinance33 (talk) 00:19, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far. Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers. Participation Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months. Progress report During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here. When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators. Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up
editGuild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September. Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote. – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.
