Sangoma for GA
editHi - Thanks for suggesting the sangoma article be nominated for GA status. Yes, I am happy to work with you to get it to that state. I have extensive experience on the topic and also a fair amount of reference material, so I don't think it should be a problem. I think I have nominated it correctly. I nominated it to the section Culture, sociology and psychology (I am very new to the whole wikipedia world so bear with me while I learn how all this works.) Please review in your time and suggest what improvements we need to make. Cheers Mycelium101 (talk) 03:41, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
I have pretty much finished the merge of the sangoma article to Traditional Healers of South Africa and have included a number of other bits and pieces in the article. I have been also trying to consolidate all the multiple references from the same place. I would appreciate if you can give me a couple of more areas/pointers for cleaning up so we can see how close we can get it to GA status. Thanks and regards 07:29, 18 July 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mycelium101 (talk • contribs)
GA articles
editI have a few questions about GA articles. How long does it take for you to write a GA quality article? I mean I get bored after writing a few paragraphs. And also do you have any recommendation on who I should ask to review an article before actually nominating it? I have nothing in mind right now but just in case in the future, if I wish to devote a few weeks to write a GA quality article.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 10:10, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- How far do you think Wahinepio is from a good article in length, amount of sources, and content? --KAVEBEAR (talk) 10:13, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- Oh that is good. In the future, I will ask you for a review.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 10:41, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Madagascar
editWould it be accurate to say "the nation is estimated to have just over 21 million people" [effective now, as of the most recent estimate]? - Dank (push to talk) 00:13, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- Would you provide the link to the source of your statistics? Lemurbaby (talk) 04:14, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- CIA Factbook, the fourth ref in Madagascar, the same ref you used. I'm copyediting Crisco's "Featured Content" page; "estimate" isn't an appropriate word in that context for a number as precise as "21,926,221", and generally, people reading a newsletter aren't expecting 8 significant figures. - Dank (push to talk) 11:48, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- I've now updated all the total population stats in the article using that source. Thanks for bringing that change to my attention and helping keep the article up to date! We do need to keep the word "estimate", however, because even if the number looks precise (no doubt they have a particular formula they use to arrive at their number, and choose not to round up or down), it's still only an estimate. An actual census count hasn't been done in almost 20 years. Lemurbaby (talk) 13:38, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

IPA and FAC
editTwo favors to ask, if you have a moment:
1) Would you mind doing a review at FAC for me? Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Archaeoindris/archive1 I know it's not your area of specialty, but it would really help out, if you can spare the time.
2) I don't know how fluent you are in Malagasy and/or whether you are good at constructing the IPA-mg pronunciations for Malagasy words. I have recorded a few Malagasy pronunciations and attempted creating the IPA-mg in two articles: Sifaka and Ring-tailed lemur (look for "maky"). If you think you can do better or offer suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

GANs
editI have started a GAN review of Rakoto Frah. If you don't mind, I could use a review of Hotarubi no Mori e. I know... it's not about a lemur, one of its extinct relatives, or even Madagascar. It was an article I wrote for fun after I watched the show, which I thought was very touching. (If after reading the lead you want to see the short, 44-minute film before reading the spoilers in the plot summary, just tell me and I'll try to find a copy online that I can direct you to. It might also help with the review.) There are also some parts of the production section that are not covered in the lead... yet! I have a few more Japanese sources that I'm waiting to have translated, and once I receive that, I will finish the article up and polish it for FAC. But for now, I think it should be good enough for GA, even with a slightly imperfect lead. If it needs to be fixed, though, I will. I'll try to get to the FAC review soon... depending on what happens this week. – Maky « talk » 00:41, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delays on updating the GANs. I bunch of stuff came up in real life, but hopefully I should have time tomorrow evening. – Maky « talk » 04:17, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
- No worries, take your time. I know how it goes. This weekend it looks like I'll be doing some reviews of other FACs in the hope I can persuade a few more people to look at Jaojoby - he's an unknown to everyone on there so it's hard to get people interested. Woe to our more obscure and non-Eurocentric article topics... Lemurbaby (talk) 04:20, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
- No, my opinion is that the review system is failing on Wiki. Wikimedia is putting too much effort into recruiting writers, when we need more reviewers instead. There are lots of people who like to read and critique, but there's no effort to pull them in. And then there's people like me (us?) that love writing far more than reviewing, and we're forced to do review after review in hopes of getting one in return. Many people become cynical and exhibit a foul mood during the review process because it has become so unpleasant. It's something that seriously needs to change. ...And on a brighter note: Thanks for the brownie! (I'm hungry now...) :-) – Maky « talk » 04:32, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

PK again
editHi, I've finally got the VP years section of Paul Kagame into a vaguely ship shape form and posted it up in the actual article. Rather bogged down in real life at the moment unfortunately so it's pretty slow going. Now on to what should be the "main" part of the article - the presidential years (but which is currently a woefully short section with little of interest). If you have any time to look it over and comment on the balance or tone of the VP section, let me know. Otherwise I'll push on and get back to you when I've finished presidency (probably not till after christmas really) and then see about a GA push. Thanks, and congratulations on the good work with Eusèbe Jaojoby. I'll have a read of that next time I'm out and about with nothing to do! — Amakuru (talk) 21:50, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
Madagascar source help
editIf you have a moment, I was wondering if you could help point me to a source that discusses how the tribes of southern Madagascar remained largely independent from the influences the highlands and possibly also the French during much of the early colonial period. I could swear I have read this before in your articles, but I can't find it. I'm writing a paper about the etymology of lemur names, and I suspect that the word maky comes directly from one of the Bantu languages, and not from French (which came from Portuguese, which in turn came from Bantu). There are several reasons why I think this, but this would be another good reason. First of all, Bantu did influence Malagasy language, particularly in the south, since its culture and language were influenced more by Africa than elsewhere on the island. Second, I suspect it would have been very hard for English, French, or Portuguese to replace a local word, as stated above... especially if the area resisted colonization and domination by the north. Interestingly, ring-tailed lemurs are also referred to as hira, which also translates to "singing" in Malagasy, which I suspect refers to their vocalizations. However, I could only find it used in Isalo when I traveled around the south, and Isalo is more to the north and west. Although hira was probably the first Malagasy name, I suspect a Bantu derivative largely replaced it. The question is who introduced it. If you can help with a source per what I wrote above, I'd greatly appreciate it. If you have your own thoughts, I'd be interested in hearing them.
P.S. - You might want to consider archiving your talk page. ;-) If you need help with that, let me know. – Maky « talk » 21:27, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Hand-coding
editHey all :).
I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).
You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).
If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 22:59, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Main page appearance: Ranavalona III
editThis is a note to let the main editors of Ranavalona III know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on January 24, 2013. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 24, 2013. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegates Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you can change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
Ranavalona III (1861–1917) was the last sovereign of the Kingdom of Madagascar. Her reign from 1883 to 1897 was marked by ultimately futile efforts to resist the colonial designs of the government of France. She entered into a political marriage with Rainilaiarivony who, in his role as Prime Minister of Madagascar, largely oversaw the day-to-day governance of the kingdom and managed its foreign affairs. Throughout her reign, Ranavalona tried to stave off colonization by strengthening trade and diplomatic relations with the United States and Great Britain. However, French attacks ultimately led to the capture of the royal palace in 1895, ending Madagascar's autonomy. The newly installed French colonial government initially permitted Ranavalona and her court to remain as symbolic figureheads until the outbreak of a popular resistance movement led the French to send her into exile. The queen, her family and the servants accompanying her were provided an allowance and enjoyed a comfortable standard of living, but she was never permitted to return to Madagascar despite her requests. She died at her villa in Algiers at the age of 55; her remains were returned to Madagascar in 1938. (Full article...)

Paul Kagame again
editHi Lemurbaby
I've had another bit of a burst on PK in the last couple of weeks, and have just in the past day got a new lead up, which aims to summarise the rest of what's in the article now. It's looking slightly bloated, but as usual it's hard to know what to take out and what to leave.
Anyway, other than that I wanted to just get your opinion on the general state of the article (not necessarily in too much detail if you don't have much time). It probably needs a copy edit, and there are some things that I will expand in due course but I'm wondering how far away it is from potential GA material at this stage. Also there's the question of the NPOV tag; not sure if it's for me to just remove it, especially as it's hard for me to know whether what I've written addresses people's concerns on that score. I've started a conversation at Talk:Paul Kagame to see if any others have opinions.
Thanks, and I hope life's going well in the land of a thousand hills. — Amakuru (talk) 23:17, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Amakuru, I just had a quick look and the article is really looking good. I think you could nominate it for a copy edit and then once it's gone through that process, put it up for GA. I'll review it happily and we can put the final polish on it during that process. I removed the neutrality tag - the changes you've made provide a factual and balanced picture of PK (though there will always be some people who will think inclusion of any view that doesn't reflect their own is evidence of bias!). BTW at Nyungwe Forest Lodge right now as base camp for monitoring some schools where we've provided scholarships to underprivileged kids. This is my first time in Nyungwe - really lovely. Lemurbaby (talk) 04:20, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, I really love Nyungwe as well - I camped a couple of times at the park HQ in the centre of the forest and also rented one of the cottages in the tea plantation on the western edge (I think that might be close to the Nyungwe Lodge). Have you seen any colobus monkeys on your visit? They are quite amazing, the sheer number of them swinging through the trees at a time.
- I've added Kagame to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests so guess just have to sit back and wait for that one. Looks like it could be a couple of months! Thanks — Amakuru (talk) 11:32, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Ranavalona I sources
editI didn't want to continue to bloat the FAC page with potential sources, but I know you're working hard on this, and I hope that my digging for further references may be helpful. Unfortunately, I don't have access to most of these right now, and my usual materials-acquisition pathways are unavailable for a little bit. So, presented without much further commentary...
- Andriantsiferana, Henri (1987). Ranavalona I sy Rasalama. [Madagascar]. OCLC 69194651. (in Malagasy)
- Leopard, Donald D (1973). The reign of Queen Ranavalona I of Madagascar: a re-evaluation. International Congress of Africanists. OCLC 67789305.

- Sweetman, David (1984). Women leaders in African history. Heinemann. ISBN 978-0435944803.
And then a couple that are almost certainly sensationalized, but may serve to reference a view of her reign in less scholarly sources or have tidbits of otherwise useful content:
- Klein, Shelley (2003). The Most Evil Women in History. Barnes & Noble Books. ISBN 978-0760745564.
- Stradling, Jan (2008). Bad Girls: The Most Powerful, Shocking, Amazing, Thrilling & Dangerous Women of all Time. Metro Books. ISBN 978-1435103375.

Your GA nomination of Antananarivo
editHi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Antananarivo you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Brigade Piron -- Brigade Piron (talk) 14:00, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you, Brigade Piron! I half expected it was going to sit there for six months, so I haven't had a chance to look it over with fresh eyes to really polish the prose. You'll find some clunky wording in there for sure. If you are up for making some edits, please don't hesitate - but if you'd prefer me to get someone to copy edit it first, I can pull that together quickly. - Lemurbaby (talk) 14:49, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
- No problem. I saw you put it up and its an important Africa-related article after all! Excuse me if I respond a bit slowly to your changes - I've highlighted what I'm pretty sure are the only issues atm. Naturally articles can be improved virtually forever, but I'll be happy to promote it if you can deal with the ones I've highlighted alone. —Brigade Piron (talk) 18:28, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
- I've raised some more issues, can I get your responses on them? That should be it then. —Brigade Piron (talk) 19:55, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

editTranslation help?
editHi! Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I'm slowly coming back to Wikipedia, so you should see more of me soon.
By the way, would you have time to help me translate the French sources I've added to the Charles Lamberton article? Someone made some changes to the article without citing sources directly, but mentioned that the sources were on the French Wikipedia. Not only do I need to convert them into a citation template, but I also need help translating either all three or just the two handwritten ones (since I can run the other through OCR and then Google Translate). Also, the latter may even be useful to you at some point when writing about Madagascar. Personally, I may try writing a short article about Fontoynont using it since there are several species named after him. Anyway, if you have time to help, please let me know. – Maky « talk » 19:34, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- Good to hear you're coming back a bit more often! I'd be happy to try to translate some of these sources. What's the best way to go about it? Should I email you a scanned copy of the docs with my hand-written translation on it, or just summarize key information typed out in an email, or...? - Lemurbaby (talk) 02:50, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'm fine with either. I'll email you through Wikipedia so that you'll have my address. If you want to translate the parts for both Lamberton and Herbert F. Standing in the larger document, I could use both. The part on Fontoynont might also be nice since we could use it to make an article about him. (Again, I can also OCR it and then run it through Google Translate, too.) I know Archaeoindris and the greater hedgehog tenrec are named after him. Also, thanks for helping with the translation of the refs—as I suspected, they're mostly notes on what the references say. I'll have to find a way to fit them into a citation template. The latter will probably require digging around in the front of the PDF or the metadata to build a citation. – Maky « talk » 07:01, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
