Thanks

Thank you for helping fix my edit on WP:ANI. I thought I hit "Reply" so it should have worked out correctly, but it didn't. I'll play around in the sandbox to see how replys work with bullet points. Closhund/talk/ 06:03, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

@Closhund: You're welcome. Not your fault though, because someone else put their own comment in between disrupting the original order. Another editor also did this, so you may want to check if everything still looks good from your vantage point. Left guide (talk) 06:08, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
Yes, this is the intended indentation. Thank you. Closhund/talk/ 06:16, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
@Closhund: No problem, glad to be of help. Cheers, Left guide (talk) 06:17, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Statue of Dirk Nowitzki

On 22 September 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Statue of Dirk Nowitzki, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that plans for a statue of Dirk Nowitzki to have three basketballs were scrapped? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Statue of Dirk Nowitzki. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Statue of Dirk Nowitzki), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Darnell Edge college career

Hello. I see that all of the college section except for the senior season has been wrongfully deleted. These were not added to solely “promote the subject” but to summarize his career in each season. I cited and referenced multiple sources and feel these have been wrongfully deleted. I would like to put these back up because not only did it take time to write, but these were also properly sourced and cited from publicly accessible sources. InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 04:56, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

@InfinitiBowie97: Hello, Wikipedia articles are generally supposed to be based on sources that are independent of the subject, so if you would like to restore the material, please provide independent sources to cite on the article talk page at Talk:Darnell Edge and use {{edit COI}} for other neutral editors to review and possibly implement your requested edits. Thank you. Left guide (talk) 05:14, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
Hi thanks for the explanation. I’m afraid I don’t understand. The sources I provided are from Darnell’s stats and various digital newspaper articles. Are these not independent sources? I’ve also cited various online news articles throughout the article, similar to other wiki pages. InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 05:19, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
@InfinitiBowie97: The material I removed in this edit was cited entirely to his school's website, which is not an independent source. It's not really appropriate for an encyclopedia article to be written like that. If reliable sources independent of his school didn't take notice of his freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons, then the encyclopedia shouldn't take notice of them either. One possible suggestion would be to find local reliable newspapers covering him, and use those to build the article. Further discussion should continue at the article talk page. Left guide (talk) 05:30, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
I can understand how the sources from his schools website do not count. However, many of the sources that I cited were in fact from newspaper articles, such as within his junior season included an article from the New York Times would you omitted. So I believe those should still suffice. But I will, go through the instructions he provided, but I fear that most of the citations I will provide on the talk page are still going to be the same citations from at least the newspaper articles that I already provided that you omitted. InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 05:36, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
@InfinitiBowie97: I did make a mistake in removing one source (junior season free throw award) because it was incorrectly labeled as "FDU Knights" even though it now appears to be an independent source upon closer examination. Sorry about that, I'll restore that one momentarily. Left guide (talk) 05:42, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
I appreciate it :) I will work to rectify the other sources because I do hate to see hard work go down the drain, but I do understand further the guidelines. InfinitiBowie97 (talk) 05:44, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Interested in New Page Patrol?

Hello Left guide!

  • New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting, or could meet the guidelines for granting soon if you build a track record in one of these three areas: article creation, articles for deletion, or articles for creation reviewing. These demonstrate proficiency with notability, and are what admins typically evaluate when deciding to grant this permission.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please make sure you have some experience with new article creation, articles for deletion, or articles for creation reviewing, then consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

I noticed at AfD that you have a pretty good grasp of the rules and how sources work. If NPP is something you would be interested we could use a hand with the backlog. I did NPP School and I learned a lot and it made a much better editor. If you have any questions feel free to ping me. Dr vulpes (Talk) 04:36, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

@Dr vulpes: Well thank you for the offer. Guess I can say I'm flattered since the only other time I was offered a special permission, it was from an automated message sender account haha. Tbh, I don't really find much interest in checking the new pages feed or reviewing other people's drafts though, so I'm not really sure how that would be a useful tool. Thoughts? Left guide (talk) 00:39, 30 September 2024 (UTC)

A pie for you!

From sweet to savory, everyone loves pie! I saw you are taking a break from WP for a while and hope your break is restorative, regenerative and recreational. Know that you are appreciated around here! Take all the time you need, and have a slice of pie...or two...or three...! Netherzone (talk) 01:27, 10 October 2024 (UTC)

Page size

Hi there. If you need to run a page size on an old version of a page, e.g. LeBron James, Prosesize works by just clicking on the version you want in page history, then running the gadget. You don't need to actually revert the page and affect readers for that small window. Regards. —Bagumba (talk) 08:33, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

@Bagumba: Ok thanks for that tip, always good to receive advice from you. I accessed that version by going to the talk page "article milestones" template, because scrolling through the article history would've taken an eternity to get to 2013. Would Prosesize still work for finding the page size in this manner? Left guide (talk) 08:47, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
I think as a long as you get the URL somehow, then you can run Prosesize. Worked for me from that talk link.—Bagumba (talk) 08:56, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

Yao

The URL to the journal that you added to Yao Ming looks like it could be copyrighted material. We generally shouldn't link to them from WP (WP:COPYVIOEL), though it's OK to list the other source info. Am I missing something? —Bagumba (talk) 09:00, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

@Bagumba: Are you referring to the main journal page? The PDF? Or both? I personally don't know much about it, but it seems reliable and useful. Left guide (talk) 09:02, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
Reliable. No problem. The PDF could be depriving someone of their revenue. The url doesn't make it clear that it's being published with permission. —Bagumba (talk) 09:04, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
@Bagumba: Well the PDF is what's offered through the Google Scholar link. Left guide (talk) 09:07, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
If I click on "Full article", it's asking me for payment. But I could be blind. Otherwise, someone paying for this doesn't give them permission to redistribute it. And sure, this kind of "free" material is everywhere on the internet, but WP just shouldn't link to it. Again, it's fine to cite it, but the link should not go to copyvio material. A link to the pay site would be fine though. Hope that makes sense. —Bagumba (talk) 09:15, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
@Bagumba: It does make sense. It's a good-faith mistake on my part, and I'll remove the questionable link. Thanks for explaining this to me in a dignified manner. Left guide (talk) 09:22, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
If you used one of those citation templates, it'd put that padlock symbol if you specified |url-access=subscription. But that's just cosmetic. —Bagumba (talk) 09:29, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
@Bagumba: I clicked one of those "cite this article" buttons on the journal site, which I find simpler than WP citation templates, and there doesn't seem to be a need for uniformity as the only entry for a new further reading section. By the way, do you know of any other NBA players who are the main subject of peer-reviewed academic journal articles? I find it rather interesting and unusual for Yao, and I even encountered another one about him I plan to add soon. Left guide (talk) 09:41, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
My first guess was Jeremy Lin. —Bagumba (talk) 09:47, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
@Bagumba: That's pretty cool. You'd think there'd be something for Jordan, and maybe Bird and Magic too. Left guide (talk) 09:49, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
Incidentally, Yao's page is dated and really not an FA anymore. I flagged this at Talk:Yao Ming/Archive 1 § More details on legacy before, but investing in taking it to FA review is not on my priority list. —Bagumba (talk) 09:36, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
@Bagumba: Wow that's very interesting. I think there's enough sourcing between what you and I have found to spruce up content about his legacy and preserve the article's FA status. Left guide (talk) 09:46, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
Yes, sourcing isn't the issue. It's someone investing the time. —Bagumba (talk) 09:50, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
@Bagumba: This is sort of a meta-issue, but it'd be nice if there was a way to wean sports editors off of regurgitating daily news published by ESPN and the like, and seek out peer-reviewed academic journals and books by reputable publishers. News outlets are relatively bottom-of-the-barrel in the big picture when it comes to sourcing an encyclopedia, and they often aren't secondary sources. Most of the rest of the encyclopedia seems to understand this pretty well, though if you hang out at ITN often you might see a different side of the project. Left guide (talk) 10:07, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
I'm not the type to document every triple-double, but I do create bios on players that won't ever have dedicated books, let alone appearing in peer-reviewed journals. For better or for worse, sports bios' quality aren't that much different from politicians. —Bagumba (talk) 10:34, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

Celtics-Pistons rivalry notability tag

Hi there, I added a few sources to the lede to see where you consider these sources to GNG of the article. Throughout my search a bunch of sources talked of a rivalry from the 80s, but were not significant to prove anything. Thus these three are probably the greatest I found. [1] Conyo14 (talk) 02:07, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

@Conyo14: Seen, thanks for your work on that page. I have more thoughts and analysis on this, but about to eat with family and then wash dishes, so will get to that shortly later. Left guide (talk) 03:16, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
@Conyo14: The 1987 Washington Post article seems like a good one that meets all of the GNG criteria. Boston Herald I am unable to access, but it's worth noting that it shows up in yellow on the source highlighter tool, so somewhere somehow the community deemed it marginally reliable or no consensus as a publisher. Bleacher Report is generally unreliable as indicated at WP:RSNBA#Generally unreliable based on its three linked RSN discussions. You might be interested in User:Left guide/sandbox5 where over the past few days I've been documenting an analysis of the article's pre-existing references and links, in addition to a couple of books I found, and also WP:RSN#Sports Publishing/Skyhorse and Triumph Books where I asked the community about the reliability of said books. In summary, from my perspective your sources seem to have elevated the article topic from a weak delete to a borderline case, possibly a weak keep. If I may ask, are you solely focused on this one rivalry? Or would you be interested in taking on the notability of {{NBA rivalries}} on a larger scale? If the latter, there are about a dozen NBA rivalry articles with unclear notability that could benefit from more research. Incidentally, User talk:Bagumba#Notability of NBA rivalries right above your post there has some discussion of this. Courtesy ping @Bagumba:. Left guide (talk) 07:35, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
I'll just give my comments there. Conyo14 (talk) 18:23, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Statue of John Stockton

On 21 October 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Statue of John Stockton, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that, when preparing the statue of John Stockton, its sculptor repositioned the model about 20 times by using a wrench to adjust ball-and-socket joints on steel rods? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Statue of John Stockton. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Statue of John Stockton), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Breyers

I pinged you there, but as you know they don't always go through for some reason. If you don't mind, could you take a look at the discussion? I am approaching you since you've edited there in non distant past about ice cream on Breyers. Thank you Graywalls (talk) 21:45, 8 November 2024 (UTC)

@Graywalls: I received your ping, but was busy with some real-life obligations. I took a brief look at the talk thread but it takes some time for me to formulate a thoughtful response. Thanks for confirming with me. Left guide (talk) 22:02, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
