RIBE

Hi, I see you are a deleted-page-resurector:)

Some time ago, I created a page for 'RIBE' which is the name of an automotive fastener. It was flagged as an advertisement and deleted.

I made the page after I had considerable difficulty fixing a problem on my car, in the hopes that it could give a little info and help document the fastener type - definitely not advertising.

I'd like to see the text to figure out what was wrong. This topic refers to a real, physical item people have in their garages, and I'd like to try and have wikipedia contain the best mechanical engineering reference set possible....

Hi Mboard182, I have reviewed your request to userfy RIBE and, seeing no problem, have gone ahead and done it. You may now find the article at User:Mboard182/RIBE. I agree, there was nothing in it that should have been construed as advertising; the user who tagged it as advertising was mistaken. However, in looking at the deletion log, the actual deletion was for a different reason: "Unnecessary article; the disambiguation page is enough." I believe what User:Nihiltres meant by this was that, because the article was only a couple short sentences, it only merited a short mention at Ribe (disambiguation), no need for a whole page on it. Therefore, my advice is to build the article up quite a bit more, providing some more detail and a few references if you can find any, before you move it back into the main encyclopedia space (currently it's in your user space, where casual readers will not find it). Sorry to make you go through this when you just want to improve Wikipedia's coverage, but unfortunately there is no shortage of administrators here who will happily delete any article that doesn't meet rather strict criteria (listed here).

There are number of ways. Help:Archiving a talk page describes each. For me, the procedure is pretty simple: On the talk page, I add a link to a new archive page (like /Archive 999), click on the link to start adding to the new archive page, and cut and paste the archived discussions to it. I add {{talkarchive}} to the top and bottom of the new archive page so that people know what it is. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! -kotra (talk) 23:18, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

I noticed. I also long ago realized that ignoring sarcasm of that sort is the best way to counter it.

The end reaction is about what I expected, frankly. Username and sig debates very rarely end up well, because a user who's possessive enough to let it go to debate in the first place rather than changing it as soon as they're notified of the problem is quite unlikely to change their mind once 40 people tell them instead. It's an amusing coincidence how many of the people who claim that their crass username or 6-line blinking signature is totally not meant to bug anyone end up being the same ones who would rather be kicked off the site than change them to something that doesn't annoy people. --erachima talk 10:09, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, you may be right about ignoring sarcasm. And the end reaction... it's unfortunately true. There is something about usernames and sigs that people feel they own, and are part of their identity. Unfortunately, the community essentially owns them and can take them away. That concept is repellent to people, so it's no surprise people often get combative over their usernames and sigs. MSU Interview

Dear Kotra,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Thanks for the note. I don't have any insights worth passing along regarding DragonSpires, about 7 years ago I spent a lot of time searching for suitable references for the article, and found not much more than what you see now. Perhaps there are more references available now, 7 years later, but I don't care enough anymore to search. Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited! Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride, a global campaign to create and improve LGBT-related content at Wikipedia during the month of June, culminating with a multinational edit-a-thon on June 21. The project is being spearheaded by two organizers with roots in the Pacific Northwest. Meetups are being organized in some cities, or you can participate remotely. Wikimedia Commons will also be hosting an LGBT-related photo challenge.

In Portland, there are two ways to contribute. One is a photography campaign called "Pride PDX", for pictures related to LGBT culture and history. The Wiki Loves Pride edit-a-thon will be held on Saturday, June 21 from noon–4pm at Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 236 at Portland State University. Prior Wikipedia editing is not required; assistance will be available the day of the event. Attendees should bring their own laptops and cords.

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Kotra. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

  • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
  • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
  • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, Oregon Jewish Museum, Thursday, March 7

The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, in partnership with social practice artist Shoshana Gugenheim and as part of the Art+Feminism Project, will host the 2nd Annual International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to edit and/or create Wikipedia articles for Jewish women artists. The event will be held at the museum on Thursday, March 7 from 4 to 8 pm. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it. We aim to collaboratively edit/enter 18 Jewish women artists into the canon. Support will be provided by an experienced local Wikipedian who will be on site to teach and guide the process. This edit-a-thon will serve as both a public art action and a public educational program. Participants will have an opportunity to select an artist/s ahead of time or on site.
