Managing a conflict of interest

edit

  Hello, Kannukutty1989. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Bhargav Sri Prakash, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. Grayfell (talk) 06:12, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

talk I have no conflict of interest or external relationship with Bhargav Sri Prakash. I am a K-5 school science and math teacher in Houston and have administered the fooya app to children in my school, which is how I learned about their work in education. I only rarely do stuff on here but I wish I was getting paid to edit Wikipedia!! That sounds fantastic! How does one do that? Are you getting paid to do this? Kannukutty1989 (talk) 07:16, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hello. I'm glad to hear you do not have a conflict of interest. No, I am not paid. Getting paid for editing Wikipedia is almost always a bad idea, especially for Wikipedia. Take a look at Conflict-of-interest editing on Wikipedia if you want some examples. A Wikipedian in residence program might be an exception, but those follow strict ethical rules (overseen by an ombudsman or similar) and even then they sometimes get into trouble. I wanted to make sure that you understand the problems with COI editing because you removed the template:advert from the article without addressing the problem or explaining why in the edit summary, which is the second time that's happened. Words like "Pioneer" and "innovations" are red flags that an article has become too promotional, even if they might be occasionally used by other sources. Fooya is also very heavy on WP:PEACOCK words like that. Because Wikipedia is fundamentally not a platform for advertising, this is a problem. Does that explain my concerns?
Thanks. Grayfell (talk) 07:43, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks talk. I am inspired by your patient and eloquent clarification. You are truly a tremendous asset for Wikipedia! When I looked at the said article and edited it last time, I did not see anything overtly promotional. To your point, I did not find the words "pioneer" or "innovation". I thought that perhaps the advert tag was there by mistake or that the issues had been addressed. My apologies. While I am a supporter of his mission and work to help improve kids' health, I will leave that article alone for some one else to clean up. However, is there a list of other unrelated articles that need clean up or have advert tags? You have inspired me to contribute more to Wikipedia. Best wishes Kannukutty1989 (talk) 20:26, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
