Replaceable fair use File:UMass Minutemen football helmet.gif
editThanks for uploading File:UMass Minutemen football helmet.gif. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mtking (edits) 06:36, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

John Jenkins No Huddle
editHey I appreciate how you have fixed up the information. The one thing you took out that needs to be take back in is Jenkins innovation for the no huddle offense. The wiki page for hurry up credits the bengals and bills in 88 which is true for nfl but wrong for professional football. Jenkins installed the no huddle in 1985 and in week 1 they no huddled the entire 4th qtr. it was all over the papers after that. Jim Kelly loved it so much he made it the base with the bills. Jenkins would make no huddling his base offense in 1987 with Houston. We need to mention in the "greatest game never seen" was the start for the first time in professional football an offense did not huddle to run there offense outside of a 2 minute drill. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.147.77.70 (talk) 15:35, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Inherit class ?
editIs there any kind of inherit Wikipedia class so for Paul Robeson I can use infoboxes for college football player, nfl player, college coach, and singer all in 1 like I do for Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture with the NRHP and library infoboxes? I tried embed = yes, but that did not work.66.234.33.8 (talk) 21:22, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

I see you have edited Darryl Stonum. This was one of the hardest articles that I have ever had to edit and I was not sure if I was being objective and within the WP:BLP and WP:UNDUE policies. I assume that since you stopped by to edit without making substantive edits, the article is fairly representative of what would be considered a good summary of media accounts. Ping me if my assumption is incorrect.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 09:17, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

hey Chief!
editHey there! I noticed on Emmett Etzold back in June you made some edits that took out a section on the coach's history and performance. I don't necessarily mind that you did (sometimes less is more), I'm more curious why you thought it was a better move and more importantly why the references from the article were removed. Being a BLP, shouldn't we include at least some refs?--Paul McDonald (talk) 19:11, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
- I was just trying to do some cleanup, but you are right about the refs. They are probably better left in. Jweiss11 (talk) 15:33, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Militant atheism
editYou know better than to edit war. This dab was discussed extensively here [1]. You need to start a discussion if you want to make that change per WP:BRD. Consider this a warning. – Lionel (talk) 06:50, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not edit warring. I've removed a blatant NPOV violation. Labeling Dawkins, Harris, Dennett, etc as "militant", even implicitly, is biased and derogatory. Jweiss11 (talk) 06:55, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Proceed at your own peril. – Lionel (talk) 07:24, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- The next revert is your third, so you better have your ducks in a row to report yourself. You ought to be more concerned with blatant slurs against living people than wasting time making vacuous threats against one of the most tenured, respected, and accomplished editors on Wikipedia. Your recent editing history at Militant atheism shows that you are in danger of breaking the three-revert rule, or that you may have already broken it. An editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Breaking the three-revert rule often leads to a block.
If you wish to avoid being blocked, instead of reverting, please use the article's talk page to discuss the changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection. You may still be blocked for edit warring even if you do not exceed the technical limit of the three-revert rule if your behavior indicates that you intend to continue to revert repeatedly. Thanks, AnupamTalk 07:08, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Jpgordon, you are simply incorrect here. The page in question is flying a BLP notice. This is not simply a categorization I disagree with. It is a calculated smear campaign by Wikipedia editors biased toward the religious right to drag people like Richard Dawkins down in the mud with Stalinist murderers, and undermine the secular, humanist values that are at the very core of Wikipedia. I request that an unbiased admin look at this case.
Decline reason:
I'm inclined to agree with Jpgordon here. Your actions are certainly edit warring, and when the block expires, I highly suggest working for consensus on the talk page rather than reverting back and forth with other users. only (talk) 16:58, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

From Wikipedia:Edit warring: "3RR exemptions...removal of libelous, biased, unsourced, or poorly sourced contentious material that violates the policy on biographies of living persons (BLP)." There is no nuance to dab pages in general. What's been done here, and what I attempted to counter, was an elevation of unfounded, defamatory criticism against living people to simple statement of fact. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:22, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Decline reason:
While I was looking into this, I came across this edit. Nice work there. You placed on another user's talk page a dubious and tendentious templated warning during a dispute, then reverted their removal of it. Even if the warning were legit and justified, you are apparently in need of a refresher course on WP:BLANKING: Users are allowed to remove warnings from their own talk pages; doing so just carries the presumption that the warning was read. Doing that was total dick behavior ... in fact, we might as well just take a screenshot of your relevant edits and put on the page instead because it explains the concept so well. Anyone doing something like that is unfit to be unblocked. — Daniel Case (talk) 18:37, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

I am still rather dismayed at the terrible policy interpretation and lack of appreciation by multiple admins here for the BLP smear job that I worked to counter. And after looking closer at the edit warring report made against me, it seems that only two for the six edits claimed to be reverts by Lionelt actually were such. The first edit (476061260) was simply an edit on a page that had not been edited by anyone in six weeks. Edits #2 (476061260) and #3 (476081147) can legitimately be considered reverts. But edits #4 (476217277), #5 (476240891), and #6 (476243996) were attempts to mitigate differences been the stark inclusion/exclusion of the verbiage in dispute. Furthermore, it's come to light that Anupam has been copying information back and forth between analogous articles on Wikipedia and Conservapedia. That is a terribly damaging intrusion on the integrity of Wikipedia and should be investigated. Furthermore, we should investigate the usefulness and motivation behind WikiProject Conservatism, founded by none other than my accuser, Lionelt. I think it's fair to say that these two editors, with whom I've butted heads, are extremely damaging and dangerous "members" of the Wikipedia community who aim to subvert our project with their Christian-conservative political agenda. Your block
editDon't get disheartened, but do find a better way to go about editing. I see you've been given some good advice on various project pages. Try your best not to make yourself part of the problem. Dougweller (talk) 15:58, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- Dougweller, I appreciate your support and words of encouragement. Some pretty bad stuff has been uncovered by this incident. It's clear that we have two editors that are driven by a biased, political agenda backed up by a WikiProject that is a POV/bias haven. They are willing to write and defend libelous content about living people to advance that agenda, and are at least somewhat adept in gaming some of the conduct rules of Wikipedia to protect their malicious aims. It's also clear that we have a failure of administrative leadership in that a number of admins were not competent enough or were not willing to devote the time necessary to parse a complex situation and make just and appropriate decisions. In other words, they could not see the forest from the trees and enforce the true spirit of the applicable guidelines. You shouldn't worry about me being "part of the problem". This is not the sort of thing I'm on Wikipedia to do. And this interlude is not typical of the kind of editing I engage in, though the same cannot be said for other involved parties. I spent a great deal of time and effort in 2010 and 2011 working on Wikipedia, and have planned to scale back my contributions this year so that I can better pursue other goals in my life, both professional and avocational outside of Wikipedia. What time I do have left to devote here I would much rather spend advancing my main focus, which is college sports and the project management and standardization needed to support and improve that subject area. Nonetheless, I feel compelled to make a case before the community at large about this incident, and do my best to see that these problems are addressed properly. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:44, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Jweiss11, I know you mean well and only have the best intentions, but consider the fact that the majority of your contributions are in article, not project space. And, that's a good thing! HOWEVER, this means you are inexperienced when it comes to the way things are done on the admin boards, and in all honesty, you are going about this the wrong way. But, there's good news! (No, it has nothing to do with car insurance...) You can get the outcome you are looking for by listening to other editors who have been where you are now. First step you need to take is a step back. Forget about this for at least week. Do something else. Let your anger die down until you get back into the flow of healthy editing again. THEN, and only then, return to this subject. When you do, discuss it with editors you trust and get their opinion. I guarantee you are going to feel completely different in a week, and you will have gained some perspective that you otherwise don't have due to the emotional influence that's motivating you at the moment. So, please, just forget about this for a week and then see where you are at when you return. OK? Viriditas (talk) 08:01, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

editIf you start the RfC about Anupam's obvious POV pushing I will support it. From my recent interactions with him it is obvious he is pushing a religious point of view while trying to appear civil. editHi. When you recently edited Ken Donahue, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Lineman (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Conference?

New football team navboxes
editUser:Ejgreen77 has been making football team navboxes without following WP:CFB consensus as to the layout, so I left him a note. I saw where you had also mentioned this to him back in September 2011. Since you were the one primarily responsible for either creating or revamping most of those team navboxes back in the day, I was hoping you could backtrack his edits to see which ones need to be fixed and then do that. I already fixed {{Albany Great Danes football navbox}} and {{Santa Clara Broncos football navbox}}, but I don't have the resources at my disposal like you do to know what rivalries, lore, etc. belong Ejgreen's new football navboxes. In fact, I'm tempted to TfD both the Vermont and Canisius ones if nothing more can be found in order to make them conform to the CFB standards. Could you help me out? Jrcla2 (talk) 20:41, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
- Jrcla2, I noticed some of this the other week, but didn't have a chance to deal with it, so thank you for taking the lead. You did some nice work, surely as good as I could do, researching the relatively obscure elements of the defunct Santa Clara football team, so don't sell yourself short. I agree, the Vermont and Canisius navboxes probably should be TfD'd. They are mostly nothing more than a retread of the analogous coach navboxes. If I have a chance, I'll work on cleaning up the other FCS navboxes that Ejgreen77 created. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:35, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- I went ahead and revamped the FCS navboxes. Can't find anything for Canisius or Vermont though. Jrcla2 (talk) 20:33, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- Awesome. Thanks for taking care of the navboxes. Yeah, the resources for defunct programs tend to be hard to find. I built the Vermont coach navbox by going through the archive of old UVM yearbooks online. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:09, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (File:Mid-Central College Conference logo.jpg)
editThanks for uploading File:Mid-Central College Conference logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:09, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Why'd you remove the win percentage from Bret Bielema? SGMD1 Talk/Contribs 03:32, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
- These winning percentages have been added haphazardly without consensus. I'm cleaning things up as a prelude to a conversation that I will start at WP:CFB. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 03:35, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
- The win % is present on pages for a ton of other college football coaches (Nick Saban and Brady Hoke, just as examples). Are you planning on removing the win % from all of those as well? SGMD1 Talk/Contribs 03:49, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I do. I can assure you that the win pct is not present on the vast majority of coach bio articles, and in most case where it is present, it seems to have been added recently by one particular editor. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:51, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Future class?
editCurious: Why "future" class on Talk:2012 Heart of America Athletic Conference football season? The season has already started... I would have gone either "start" or "current" ... ?--Paul McDonald (talk) 11:34, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, should be "current". I just made the change. Jweiss11 (talk) 12:10, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Defend your changes
editYou keep blocking changes to the Sam Harris article. Explain any removals that you make or I will have no choice but to report you for vandalism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abrhm17 (talk • contribs) 14:12, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
Sam Harris runs Project Reason and is a CEO, so by definition he's a businesssman. How is this a hard concept to grasp? Abrhm17 (talk) 14:19, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
- It's a non-profit. Please find a reliable source that classifies him as a "businesssman" before you add that wording. Jweiss11 (talk) 14:22, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
Please find a reliable source that classifies him as a "philosopher" before adding that wording. Because the overwhelming majority of academic philosophers would not accept him as one of their number.
As for profit, he has a bookstore on his website where he receives 50% of the total profits. This is more evidence that he's a man of business.
I'm going to give you a choice now. Sam Harris can be neither a philosopher nor a businessman, or he can be both a philosopher and a businessman. What's it going to be? Abrhm17 (talk) 14:26, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
- I won't stand in your way if you take out "philosopher" and I understand the argument against describing him as such. I didn't put that wording in. But Wikipedia should not be edited by this sort of deal-making negotiation. Jweiss11 (talk) 14:28, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
Edit-warring
editI've declined the request for semi-protection on Alabama Crimson Tide which you posted yesterday; instead, I've blocked the IP. But I have to tell you that you are also guilty of edit-warring: it is not so clear-cut that the edits were vandalism by our definition, though they certainly were disruptive, and I didn't see any article talk page explanations, though you left a note on their talk page. I don't know if you reported them to AIV, where the disruption could have been dealt with more quickly (RFPP is slooooow sometimes). Anyway, after looking at that IP's talk page again I'm going to lengthen that block, but next time, stay on the safe side. The Tide is not going to crumble and fall while you wait for an admin to block the IP. Take it easy, Drmies (talk) 14:13, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- Drmies, thanks for your message and your administrative action. I think that tenured editors such as myself ought to get a lot of latitude when dealing with new or anonymous editors that are clearly subverting Wikipedia, whether or not that subversion falls strictly under the definition of the "vandalism". As for the issue of semi-protection, I exchanged private emails with the offending IP editor. He named is [redacted] and he appears to be a US Army soldier stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia. When I suggested to him that his behavior would lead to the blockage of the IP address he was using, he repsonded with this threat: "If the IP address is blocked due to someone posting historical and factual truth, so be it. There are plenty of other government computers with various IP addresses one can use to edit the false information." Jweiss11 (talk) 14:28, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- Jweiss, sorry, but I stand by my 'warning'--both of you broke, like 20RR, and I left you a note, not a template. Anyway, I blocked, blocked again, and finally revoked their talk page access--it's too stupid for words (we got the usual censorship and "faggotry," of course). Now, that threat is ridiculous and I'm not worried about it. Let them carry on their little crusade for Minnesota or whatever; we'll deal with in the usual ways--semi-protection if such socking starts. Let me know if you see it before I do, or just report again. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 14:36, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
R. M. Brown and R. R. Brown and Robert R. Brown
editOh dear it looks we may have a royal mess of these three - can you take a look at the sources I found for R.R. and R.M. (as well as R.M.'s talk page) to hopefully link or straighten these three out? Seems R.R. worked in New Mexico per the Who's Who entry but I can't link him to Robert R.. R.M. supposedly went to Princeton but the Who's Who also says R.R. coached at Tulane (which we have R.M. as here). Not sure if we have a Tulane ref saying their R.M. went to Princeton or Dartmouth, but this one may take a bit of work... – Connormah (talk) 22:01, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- R.M. looks to probably have been Ralph Manning Brown, class of 1907, Princeton. – Connormah (talk) 02:21, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
- Unrelated, but it would also appear that Enoch J. Mills and Joe Mills are the same person per [2]. Any chance you can do a merge when you get the time? Thanks. – Connormah (talk) 05:24, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
- Nice research on Mills. I will work on that one when I get a chance. The Browns seem more complicated. I think we need some more research there. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 12:11, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hey, guys. I love a good mystery as much as the next guy, but have you looked at the infobox photos for R.M. and R.R.? Assuming the photos are correctly sourced, these are obviously the same guy. LOL Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 12:44, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

- Huh, then that would suggest that the Who's Who for Robert Roswell is correct. Now I wonder if Robert Roswell was nicknamed "Buster" back in Dartmouth... – Connormah (talk) 14:39, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
- I attended a university in Virginia for two years, and worked in several Virginia cities after graduating from college, so I have some familiarity with Virginia geography. Lexington (Washington & Lee) and Blacksburg (Virginia Tech) are about 80 miles apart, straight down the Shenandoah Valley----probably a two-hour train trip in 1908. Both R.M. and R.R. have established connections to Virginia Tech; I am guessing that he might have served as a one-year "interim" coach for Tech in 1908, while serving as the full-time coach for W&L. I don't know how he doubled as the Tulane coach and W&L coach in 1909----obviously New Orleans and Virginia are more than 80 miles apart----but there are other examples of coaches working for two different colleges at the same time. The most notable example I can recall of this was Pop Warner. I will be interested to hear what you and Jweiss find with further research. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:49, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
- For what its worth, it appears Va Tech had both RR and RM, I found the sources with RM going to Princeton in Virginia Tech sources. The Who's Who for RR shows he was in New Mexico at the military academy, so its possible RR mayhave coached at NM state, I think.CMAH (Connormah's Sock) 17:05, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thx for doing the merge. I'll see if I can try and sort this mess (the Browns) out this weekend... – Connormah (talk) 05:23, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, seems R.M. at VPI was a different person, but R.R. coached at Tulane, as well as NM State (the Robert R. one can be merged as well) (per this [3]. I'm probably making a huge mess out of all of these, could a talk page stalker or you perform the merges? – Connormah (talk) 18:23, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
- Just found his obituary - it says he coached at W&L, Tulane, VPI, and NM State. – Connormah (talk) 18:34, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
- Connormah, before we positively conclude that R.M. and R.R. are different persons, please examine the infobox photos again. To my discerning eye, R.M. and R.R are clearly the same guy. Same face, same hairline. This raises one of two possibilities: one of the sources cited is wrong regarding alma maters, or we have included the photo of the wrong person in one of these articles. In any event, it would be a remarkable coincidence in this insular part of the South for two Ivy League-educated college football coaches, both named "Robert Brown," to be coaching at nearby institutions (as well as the same institution (VPI) in one instance) during the same time period. It is possible that Brown attended both Dartmouth or Princeton, or alternatively that the writers for the VPI yearbook and/or UVa newspaper simply confused two rival northeastern colleges. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that no one named "Robert Brown" played college football for four seasons at BOTH Dartmouth AND Princeton in the early 1900s. I don't believe in coincidences, and the photos tell me that some sort of misidentification has been made. It would be worth checking the Dartmouth and Princeton alumni directories or calling their alumni associations directly. I resolved one early 1900s coaching mystery by calling the Clemson alumni association, and the CUAA staff were happy to help (the subject coach was dead, so there were no privacy issues). Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 18:44, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
- I think we have a misunderstanding here - RM and RR are the same, but different. I found a new photo for R.M. - see his article. RR coached at Tulane, R.M. from Princeton coached VPI. RR from Dartmouth also coached at VPI. See [4]. I can send you the obit text of Robert R if you'd like too via e-mail. – Connormah (talk) 18:50, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Connormah, I believe you mean R.R. Brown and Robert R. Brown are the same person, right? Otherwise, you have really confused me. The new photo of R.M. (at VPI) looks younger than the original photo (which I am convinced was the same guy in the current R.R. photo). Looking at the new photo you added, I'm no longer sure. Do we know what the origins of the original R.M. photo (i.e. the one you replaced)? I can't find anything helpful on the photo file page. In support of your position, you have now identified two complete middle names, as opposed to random middle initials, and two different alma maters. Query: Do we know what happened to R.M. after his one season at VPI? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:08, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, it's really confusing. Yes, R.R. (Robert Roswell) and Robert R. are the same person. The obit I found supports all of his coaching positions (additionally he coached at New Mexico Military for a long time, until 1948). The VPI photo came from the VPI yearbook (should be on the file description page). I cannot seem to find what happened to R.M. after VPI, but there was also a Ralph Manning Brown, Jr. who also went to Princeton, born to a Ralph Manning Brown, presumably, though just a guess at this point, the R.M. that coached at VPI. This R.M. Brown (class of 1907) was deceased by the son's graduation from Princeton in 1937. So basically R.R. (Robert Roswell) and Robert R. are the same person, he was a star on the Dartmouth team, coached at VPI, Tulane, Washington and Lee, New Mexico State, and New Mexico Military, and R.M. (Ralph Manning) only coached at VPI , and attended Princeton. – Connormah (talk) 19:29, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
- Nah, no reason to apologize. Like I said, I do love a good mystery, and I've worked with Jweiss on a couple of these early 1900s coach searches before. It sounds like you've got your answer. Now we just need to merge the R.R. Brown content into the Robert R. Brown article, and convert the R.R. Brown page to a redirect. I think this is a BRD situation, and doesn't require an AfD or any advance notice on the talk pages to complete the merge it. No one is going to object. Probably should add a link at the Buster Brown dismabiguation page, too. If you don't want to do the merge, I'm happy to do it, but it may be a couple of days.
- FYI, I have your user talk page and Jweiss' user talk page watch-listed, so there's no need to put a tickler note on my talk page. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:41, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
- No problem. I already got rid of the Tulane stuff on RM's page, but I'll let someone else do the merge, I'm pretty messy at these things. Robert R.'s page should be redirected IMO, I'll create Robert Roswell Brown as a redirect. – Connormah (talk) 20:53, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

- Why redirect "Robert R. Brown" instead of "R.R. Brown?" I would think using the first name rather just the initial for the article title would be better. The early 1900s newspaper convention was to use the coaches' initials in the team sports records, but that was usually not the name most of them actually used. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:04, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
- Either or, doesn't really matter I guess, but going to R.R. would be easier as the bulk of the content already exists there. It seems that he went by R.R. later than the 1900s though, there were 1940s articles referring to him as that. – Connormah (talk) 21:26, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

I've merged Robert R. Brown into R. R. Brown. Cbl62 has gotten in out the action as well and done some expansion and added a photo from 1937. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:25, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I know. I just discovered that when I saved two hours worth of work in merging to Robert R. Brown, and redirecting R.R. Brown. Oh, well. It's not like it's the first time I've wasted time on Wikipedia. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 03:30, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

- Oh joy. So it may be that Gus Brown (American football) from Colgate may have been R. M. Brown of Princeton per [5] . – Connormah (talk) 23:17, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
- I have my doubts as to whether Gus Brown of Colgate, R.M. Brown of Virginia Tech, and Ralph Manning Brown of Princeton are all the same person. According to Princeton records, he graduated in 1908. That would mean that he was coaching at Virginia Tech while still a student. It does seem likely that the Princeton student and Colgate coach may be the same. If you guys pursue further, here are some clues. Ralph Manning Brown of Princeton was raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey.[1][2][3] He entered Princeton University as a freshman in 1904.[1] He graduated from Princeton as part of the Class of 1908.[4] At the time of World War I, he was living in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he was self employed as a contractor with offices on Broadway in New York City. [5] Cbl62 (talk) 00:42, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hm, that's interesting. The only Princeton grad with the initials "R.M." from that time period seems to be Ralph Manning. As I said above, Ralph Manning seems to have also been deceased by the 1930s, and his son, Ralph Maning, Jr. also attended Princeton, so that may complicate some things. Can you view the Princeton yearbooks, Cbl? Does the pic I added to R.M.'s article look similar if so? – Connormah (talk) 05:36, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Another merge
editIf you could do E. C. Hayes and Earle C. Hayes, that'd be great. This and this source pretty much states that they're the same person... – Connormah (talk) 05:24, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
- Merged. Nice catch. Jweiss11 (talk) 06:17, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks so much. Also it seems that I may have finally solved the mystery of Captain Aldworth of Maine, though mainly coincidence/assumption, I've linked him to Donald R. Aldworth, captain of the Minnesota football team in 1913. It seems Aldworth resided in New York but ultimately ended up retiring to Maine (in the same county as the Univ. is). He also attended courses in Maine in 1918 at the university, so I'm pretty sure it's a match. Going to get back in contact with their archives and see if they can amend their records. – Connormah (talk) 23:30, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
- Another thing if you're not too busy - could you get the record table worked out at L. W. Boynton's article? Turns out the U of Kansas records have his name listed wrong (ugh), and he is linked to the coach that coached at Washington (St. Louis) and Sewanee. Thanks! – Connormah (talk) 22:35, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Murray Warmath.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Murray Warmath.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Connormah (talk) 14:57, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

Regarding A. S. Jeffs, former U of Washington coach, this 1916 publication states he went to Minnesota, but I've e-mailed the U of Minn archives and they have no record of him there. However, I did find an "A. S. Jeffs" (Alexander Samuel Jeffs) who went to Stanford, played football there and was from Washington bio on pg 695 here. He died April 27, 1905 [6], probably in Washington where he worked as a lawyer. Could this possibly be a mixup in the original source and do you think the A. S. Jeffs from Stanford probably coached at Washington? The coincidences are pretty overwhelming - born in Washington, played football at Stanford, returned to Washington... Maybe I should see if the Univ. of Washington archives has anything... – Connormah (talk) 03:30, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, and also see Cbl62's talk regarding Collier. – Connormah (talk) 04:12, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- And also, another merge for you when you get the time, Sam Boyle and Samuel Boyle, Jr. are the same person per the VMI yearbook, 1900. It mentions he went to Penn and was a star there. – Connormah (talk) 03:43, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- See Cbl62's page regarding RM and Gus Brown. I'm sure they're a match now, could you do the merging? I'll add the dates later. Thanks. – Connormah (talk) 04:41, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
DYK and QPQ
editOver the last few days, I've nominated another eight of our joint projects (William L. Allen, William Goodyear, John C. B. Pendleton, Henry Van Hoevenberg, Alfred Ellet Hitchner, Arthur P. Robinson, William V. B. Van Dyck, Herman G. Steiner) for DYK. This creates a burden of doing eight QPQ reviews of other DYK nominations. If you should have the time to knock out one or two of those reviews, that would be great. If not, that's fine too. I appreciate your work on the articles. Cbl62 (talk) 06:49, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Your dad
editI recall you mentioning that your father attended UM in the Stan Noskin era and got a kick out of reading that article. I'm trying to tackle the task of filling out UM team articles here and there. Recently completed the 1943 and 1976 teams. I was wondering if there is a year that might be especially memorable for your father. While 1959 was a losing season, it may still be especially memorable to him. If you were interested, we could team up on improving that year's article as a Hannukah-Christmas-Kwanzaa-Winter Solstice gift to the Class of 1960. Let me know if you're interested. Cbl62 (talk) 16:39, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
- Cbl, thanks for the message. It's actually a good friend's father that went to Michigan in the Noskin era. He was a year ahead of Noskin, and graduated in 1959. Let me know what you decide to tackle and I'll try and chip in. Jweiss11 (talk) 02:52, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
