Commercial use of Image:Ginger1.jpg

Redheads

Just to let you know, I have nothing against redheads myself despite nominating Gingerism for deletion. This seems to be primarily a problem in the United Kingdom (as you seem to be aware) and I must say, that's sad. I no longer live in England and my nomination of the article for deletion is strictly because the term is a neologism. --Yamla 17:43, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

No problem :) I'm hunting down a few more cases where it's been used in the press recently as it seems to have been extensively used as a term in the last 12-18months though I'm not sure who initially coined it. I suspect it will likly end up merged/ redirected to the negative attitudes towards red heads in the red hair article (which I don't actually mind too much if there's a way of merging it together without stepping on anyones toes too much) I just thought it warranted a bit of discussion. Though it is odd that it seems to be a form of discrimination largly restricted to the united kingdom. I beleive but can't think of a source to directly cite that it probably came about because of tensions between the southern english and people from celtic backgrounds (especially the scots and irish).

I'm sorry the tone sounded harsh in the talk :). I'm just certain that after a certain point a word ceases to be a neologlism and becomes a word or term of note - and gingerism is sort of on the cusp of that etymological transistion at the moment - as it seems preffered to gingerphobia in the press.

Next tiem i submit an article i'll make sure I have a wide range of sources (rather than just interent ones) before i post it up :)
