25 Singapore law/politics articles on GAN!

Greetings, Jacklee! You may be pleased to be informed that 25 articles about Singaporean law and politics, mostly written by you, have been nominated at GAN by uninvolved (and ironically named) user Kaypoh. If the reviews are handled well, the number of Singapore-related GAs would skyrocket. I have watchlisted all 25 articles and will try to address concerns by reviewers, but I am not a law expert, so I need your help. The considerable effort you put into writing these articles is clearly appreciated and with a little more effort, will be officially recognised with plenty of green plus signs! It's flattering that some of the articles I worked on have been nominated, but I think it was over-ambitious for Kaypoh to nominate so many articles for review. Is he or she planning to personally work on addressing the reviewers' concerns as regards all the articles? If a nomination is placed on hold, the concerns are generally minor and would not take long to address. Group Representation Constituency is currently being reviewed and will probably be placed on hold, due to several dead links and statements without citations. I fixed a grammatical error that the reviewer pointed out, but I cannot help with the referencing issues as most of the references are offline. Not really. It might take some time to look up the references, which is why I wished Kaypoh had not nominated so many articles at one go, particularly since he or she doesn't appear to intend to help address reviewers' concerns (judging from the "Group Representation Constituency" article). I suggest that you leave a note on his or her user talk page advising against nominating such a large mass of articles at one go in the future, since most reviewers expect issues flagged up to be addressed within a week. — Cheers, JackLee ^–talk– 21:01, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Ewer

Hi

I have to disagree - I am from middle England, we have always used "a ewer". It is also the same on the Ewer page. Google (though I am not saying it is definitive) gives 45,200 "a ewer" and 17,700 "an ewer"

There are some words that begin with vowels that do not use that rule, such as "a european".

In fact, after re-reading your edit summary, you are exactly correct about the difference in pronunciation. Those words beginning in e that have a u sound are those which fit this particular exclusion to the rule - elephant is the "ehh" sound (as in edifice and ebony), ewer and university are "you" sounding Chaosdruid (talk) 14:38, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

I think the difference of opinion is due to the way we pronounce the word ewer. I looked up the OED which states that it is pronounced /ˈjuːə(r)/ (YOO-er). I have been pronouncing it differently – /ˈiː(j)uːə(r)/ (EEYOO-er) – giving it an initial /iː/ vowel sound and thus making it different from words like European and university. WP:UKNATIONALS

Thanks for the 4/5-year-old herculean effort that yielded WP:UKNATIONALS.

Yesterday I read the protected 2007 discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biographies/2007-2008 archive: British nationality and skimmed much of the 2008. I disapprove most fancy signatures but I approve the "JackLee" you introduced midway, because for almost a year i read "Jackiee" (and the new one isn't very fancy).

The head and foot of that Biographies subpage archive are inadequate, because the header directs "back" to Biographies talk, the footer directs nowhere, and the discussion also continues at MOS talk. I do have it sorted out now for myself, but I think you should know.

I will make some substantial comment at WP:UKNATIONALS, probably not now because my Friday time is so limited --and I have mis-spent almost all of it :-(

P.S. Depending how much time you have to mis-spend, or how much the matter still grips you, my recent trail in Talk space might interest you. (WP England talk: British, English, etc ... ends by reporting that trail.)

Singapore GAs

Thanks to the articles you sent me via Factiva, Ya Kun Kaya Toast has been rewritten and is undergoing peer review in preparation for a GA nomination. Could you help me search Factiva for the following? Feel free to do this in two sittings if the total number of articles is fairly large.

• Articles containing "Association for Persons with Special Needs" or "Association for the Educationally Subnormal"
• Articles containing "Singapore Association for the Visually Handicapped" or "Singapore Association for the Blind"
• Articles containing "national pledge", Singapore sources only
• Articles containing "Mas Selamat"

By the way, in 2012, there have been 18 new Singapore-related GAs so far, so we are in an excellent position to break the record of 22 new Singapore-related GAs in 2008.

Are you back yet? The results for your search for "Ya Kun Kaya Toast" indicate that Factiva does include Chinese sources in its database. Thus could you also conduct a search for "陈伟联" (which would probably have a few hundred results, at most) and maybe "郑彦彦" (definitely less than a hundred results)? --J.L.W.S. Subjunctive case

I suggest you look up the subjunctive case. Because this is a suppositional/hypothetical case, 'were' is more correct. Cf. "I wish he were here." "If only there were more time."

Both of the examples you cite sound fine, but somehow "To decide whether or not he were running with an unfair advantage ..." sounds very awkward.
