Greetings Jabo-er, I'm posting this message on your talk page because I noticed that you've recently created the new article Chan Siu-bak--However, I noticed there are some holes that may need filling: the article does not contain in-line citations, and so doesn't follow Wikipedia style guidelines. It's always nice to see users contributing to make Wikipedia better!Jipinghe (talk) 21:51, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
Some tips to help you out!
editHi Jabo-er, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)
First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.
Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Jabo-er/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.
For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).
Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.
Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.
One last thing to keep as a motto: "It's better to write one good, well-referenced, nicely-presented article than it is to create fifty unreferenced one-line stubs!" Pesky (talk …stalk!) 09:52, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
How references work
editSimple references
editThese require two parts;
- a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
- b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References == {{reflist}}
(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)
To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Jabo-er/reftest and try it out.
Named references
editChzz was born in 1837. <ref name=MyBook> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> Chzz lives in Footown.<ref name=MyBook/>
Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.
Citation templates
editYou can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;
Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation | last = Smith | first = John | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century | publication-date = 2001 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]] | page = 125 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4 }} </ref>
Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.
For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.
Here's a little bit of magic which can save you an awful lot of time and effort!
editYou might want to consider using this tool - (tools:~dispenser/cgi-bin/webreflinks.py) - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or or Special:MyPage/vector.js, then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page! It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well all by itself. For those it can;t do by itself, it gives you a pull-down (or up) menu of templates to choose from, which you can then fill in manually. Often the problem is "No title found" - sometimes the title is obvious (especially if it's a pdf), bit, if not, just open the page yourself and choose soemthing appropriate if there's not already a clear title there. Happy editing! Pesky (talk …stalk!) 09:52, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

editHi. When you recently edited Chinese New Year, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Spring (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Chief executive election
editJust an innocent question: is the Social welfare sector usually considered part of the pan-democrats, and thus included in their headcount for votes? If they are, we would have double-counted... --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 02:41, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
Li Wangyang
editThanks for the correction. However, could you cite this, as the Sentinel piece which the text is based on says he's PCC at a national level, which would of course overstate his importance. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 03:22, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- Never mind, I've found it in the Standard article. :-) --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 07:06, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Scholarism
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Scholarism, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
- It appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Basalisk inspect damage⁄berate 14:45, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
Nomination of Scholarism for deletion
editA discussion is taking place as to whether the article Scholarism is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Scholarism until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Basalisk inspect damage⁄berate 10:37, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Scholarism
editA tag has been placed on Scholarism, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.
Basalisk inspect damage⁄berate 13:55, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Some advice
editI strongly urge you not to attempt to circumvent the outcome of an AfD discussion by simply adding the material into another article. Attempting to do so it tendentious editing and may lead to a block.
You need to drop the stick on this one. Scholarism isn't an entity worthy of mention in an encyclopaedia. Please stop your crusade to use wikipedia to promote them. Basalisk inspect damage⁄berate 13:58, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
Please note that I have declined and removed your report to WP:AIV because Basalisk's edits are not vandalism. —DoRD (talk) 14:55, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- A certain degree of persistence can be effective here, but at some point it usually boomerangs. IMO, you came very near that point & I'm glad I was able to persuade you to stop before that. I can comment further if you activate your email from the user preferences page. DGG ( talk ) 00:10, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi, You are welcome to make that change based on other (reliable) sources, but you can't make that change without adding those sources. If you wanted to clarify that he was imprisoned "in China", the current source supports that. To say that he was imprisoned "by the Communist Party" has a POV ring to it and needs to be backed up.
We are now at BRRD, since I am discussing this with you. Please provide an uncontroversial source as a reference or back out your re-revert in the spirit of BRD while we discuss it further. Thanks, Celestra (talk) 18:57, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
- Since you have not reverted yourself and have not supplied any additional sources, I will add "in China" which is supported by the current source and clarifies he isn't imprisoned in some other country. That is an NPOV change. I see that "by the government of ..." is used in other notes and I think that has a very POV ring to it, implying that the imprisonment is extrajudicial. I can't see a way to read the source, which is a transcript of an acceptance speech and not a terribly reliable source to start with, as saying that anything about the government or the Communist Party. Thanks, Celestra (talk) 23:57, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Please undo your move for Hang Seng Management College
edit"Granted university title" does not mean that the new name takes effect immediately. The name is still "Hang Seng Management College" at the moment. Regarding your edits in the "Glory to Hong Kong" wiki
editSince articles in Wikipedia have to be neutral, it would not be the smartest thing to do by adding "anti-protestors" in the title of "Copyright infringement issues". Also, there is no concrete way of determining copyright infringers' opinions. MusicSounds1011 (talk) 05:18, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- I was intending to clarify who committed the copyright infringements, because a section named "Copyright infringement issues" may mislead readers that "the song infringed someone else's copyright" at first glance. What do you suggest? Btw, I will recover other parts of my edit that appear to be gone in an edit conflict. --Jabo-er (talk) 05:32, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- Good, thanks! I also recovered the minor proofreading edits that were overwritten by the edit conflict recovery. For the title, maybe "Copyright infringement by secondary creations"? MusicSounds1011 (talk) 06:24, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- It looks good. Thanks. --Jabo-er (talk) 14:42, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

editGoogle Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
editHello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!
Spurious removal of animation
editI see that you wrote in the talk page that you removed the animated spread map as you felt it shows Taiwan as part of China. *In fact the image doesn't even use the word China, and is based upon an accepted map from commons.* Please do not bring political arguments to Wikipedia. Consider this a final warning. prat (talk) 08:39, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- This is part of history: Talk:COVID-19 pandemic/Archive 8#RfC on map of infected cases
- This veteran Wikipedian and administrator contributed a great work in the creation and maintenance of File:2019-nCoV_Confirmed_Cases_Animated_Map_of_China.gif, for which the entire Wikipedia community should show him respect (I did twice). Then people discussed the adherence to the NPOV policy on the talk page. Despite the final warning, Wikipedians managed to form a consensus to uphold the NPOV policy on the article that would eventually become the most important of the year. All we hope now is the pandemic can come to an end asap.--Jabo-er (talk) 12:44, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

editThe article Time (2021 film) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Non notable film, appears to fail WP:NFILM as no reviews or anything other than film database sites, videos, and other promo material found in a WP:BEFORE.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
