Template:Linkless

Hi, I have re-added the google search link to Template:Linkless, it is very useful, for example try the link on Eco-imperialism, it finds article that contain "Eco-imperialism" and thus most likely need to link to Eco-imperialism. The link to Category:Pages that do not link to anything is unnecessary because the article is already in that category. thanks Martin 20:28, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

If you wanna upload an image or something, you click "Upload file" on the side of the screen. It's under "Email this user". But here's the hard part: you gotta to provide a license. If you made the image yourself, you should license it under "Creative Commons" or "GFDL." However, if it's a photo, and someone other than you is in it, you need their permission, or else the image is not kosher for wikipedia, and someone will come and block you forever (just kidding). I wouldn't upload more than one or two images for your userpage, though, a lotta wikipedians get mad if you're using huge amounts of server space for personal pics that don't go in the encyclopedia. Oh, and I do like plants and such, although I don't like the work of gardening, just the end result ;). And as my final piece of advice, you only have to write your signature (this thing-> --~~~~) once at the end of your note, or else you'll get two signatures! You also don't have to write "Annahly" after it, the four ~~~~ change into your name after you hit "Save page".-- The ikiroid  01:35, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Concordia is an organization of editors on Wikipedia that strive to encourage civility and fair treatment among all editors in the Wikipedian community, from the Wikignome to the Wikiholic. The project was designed to have a friendly and helpful environment to support any unfortunate Wikipedians that have become victims of incivility, hostility, or continual disrespect.

We currently need help in getting going, and making the community understand our aims. We work for civility. Nothing more, nothing less.

re: WP:VP on Template:Infobox Writing system

Since it's been a few days, thought I'd make a house-call!

Let me start off by saying I began this template in order to help synchronize various writing system articles, and the template turned out to be much more of a chore than I anticipated. I initially copied it from Template:Infobox Language, thinking I could tweak it, but now I realize that the esoteric code is quite overwhelming to the noobesque computer geek such as myself. I need some help with it. I, as well as other members from Wikipedia:WikiProject Writing systems have outlined parameters on its talkpage and now these plans need to be implemented. Would any wikipedian experienced with esoteric code be willing to help me edit this template?-- The ikiroid  02:32, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you very much. I'm already teaching myself Esperanto and I enjoy it considerably. I'll look into Lojban. I'm thinking of making my own conlag: English 2, based on largely on English but with a simplified grammar, reduced vocabulary, and phonetic alphabet. Sure. You might want to look into the grammar of Mandarin Chinese, it has a very simple yet effective grammatical structure. It's also full of kennings. There's also The simple english wikipedia to consider.-- The ikiroid  14:13, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

=De-linking IPA

Interwiki links have an underline that can obscure the IPA characters. In the Interlingua page (and many others like it), the characters were on a table so that if a reader doesn't know what /b/ is they can click on bilabial consonant and they can click on stop consonant. Writing system template

Thanks for the barnstar. :]

I just made some additional updates to incorporate the remaining requested features. At this point I think the template could be put into limited use, but I wouldn't try to implement it everywhere yet as people will probably come up with new twists and ideas to be incorporated as it actually gets applied. I might suggest trying to add it to the more unusual scripts as test cases, make any changes needed to cover those, and then roll it out on a wider scale. --CBDunkerson 23:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Usa work program

It's an old poster from the Great Depression—in the 1930s in the USA about 25% of all workers lost their jobs when the economy fell apart. The president at the time, Herbert Hoover, refused to let the government intervene and give the people jobs. So when the next election came, a new man, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected, and he started a bunch of socialist government programs to give people work. One of them was the Work program—it gave out-of-work men a chance to work in construction jobs for the government so that their family would have some sort of income. Most of the programs ended at the beginning of World War II, because most of the people who needed the programs ended up getting jobs building military equipment in factories. After World War II, the United States entered a time of economic prosperity, because they were the only major nation that had not been hurt by the war. Because of this prosperity, all of the programs were discontinued, so unfortunately, they aren't around today. If you want to go to the US, I'd suggest California, or some major city like New York City, Chicago, Houston, or Seattle. But it really depends on the sort of career you are pursuing. What do you want to do? You'd probably get a good job, because you speak spanish and japanese in addition to english.-- The ikiroid  00:30, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Re "Help me improve"

Well I've only gotten around to responding to your entry in my "Help Me Improve" page just now - slow, aren't I?

I understand the merits of your idea and it's certainly something to consider. It's really hard for me to keep a cool head when I seem to be running into conflict after conflict after conflict with no end in sight.

I can admit, things are getting way too intense for me at the moment.

Nous/on

I was under the impression that "on" had all but conquered "nous" in usage of parisian and quebecois french. I've never heard Cajun french, and in the book The Power of Babel McWhorter talks about how the usage of "nous" in France immediately isolates you as an inexperienced speaker. Where did you hear that it was only Cajun?-- The ikiroid  18:11, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

It seems as though I am in error. I had read the Cajun French article a while ago and recalled it comparing the dialect with Parisian french. Upon a second look, I can see that it mentions that using on for nous is more widespread. In addition, looking at the page on French personal pronouns (who knew there was such a page?!) it seems that on can be used instead of nous but it is a bit more complex; complex enough that I would be surprised if speakers didn't have difficulty with it.

I'm still going to need more to indicate that written French is "awkward when spoken" though. AEuSoes1 00:48, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

OK, I changed it to a dot. My only worry was that all of the words in the parentheses are treated as one, and they are moved to the next line if they don't fit at the end of a line of text (I hope that makes sense). Again, thank you for your advice. I want to be an admin someday, but I want to be an extremely active wikipedian before I become one. "Fix My Page"

You want your page overhauled/redesigned? Hmm...

I'd suggest moving the "helpful links" to a subpage. Type down "This page is best viewed in abcXdef resolution," whichever resolution you designed your page in, or the best one it looks in. This could help with your Userbox page, as I only have an 800x600 display, and I can barely see anything except the userboxes. The six images you have at the beginning are creative and look okay, but the boxes above take away from them. The status indicator could go somewhere below the big beginning display. I like the flags illustrating the languages you know/practice (which is pretty much why I stole it). Try taking a few out, or shrinking them, to fit in the section. Feel free to throw in cool pictures you like, but try to limit yourself. You could go with a gallery, but that tends to get out of hand. I like the way my page looks, too! It's basically a big, nice, introductory thing at the top, with some links, then a few sections, and images here, there, and everywhere to spruce it up. It also helps add "backbone" to a page. Userboxes have a similar effect. Taken off? Why thank you! I can never get enough of Wikipedia, that's probably it. That, and I can't get enough of some of the subjects on Wikipedia. A rather effective and deadly combination. I am that way too, though I am finding that Wikipedia already has articles on many of the things I know :P. I'm thinking of making my userpage look somewhat like Phaedriel's userpage, though with a different color. I also like The Mop's userpage. Perhaps I'll find a way to integrate these styles. Re:Pinetree Secondary School

The Pinetree secondary hippy day thing was about this week we had of doing hippy stuff for spirit week at our school. Do you not think it matters?

Well, now I know it matters, but I think you phrased the sentence in the article badly. You could write "Each year Pinetree Secondary School holds a Spirit Week, including Hippy day...." but you added two people's names, so it looked like vandalism to me. I couldn't understand why you did that. Also, when you sent me a message, you erased a large amount of text. Next time, click the plus sign next to "edit this page" at the top of the page to start a new topic. That way, you won't accidently erase a bunch of text from the page. Since you are blocked for 24 hours starting 9 hours ago, I'll be happy to add a few sentences into the article on your school if you write it here. Thanks for understanding. There's a lot more to it than the definition, but I didn't want to add in any possibly biased original research to such a sensitive topic. Well....it focuses on the community of Wikipedia. Things such as Wikipedia:Esperanza/Reach out seek to aid mistreated wikipedians, and its programs help give wikipedians something to do in order to build bonds. It also gives editors a place to write random things, and express emotions and reactions in places like the coffee lounge and #wikipedia-esperanza. Most mainstream conversation and issues about the organization are handled on Esperanza's talkpage. Esperanza's FAQ will do a better job of explaining things than I can. Personally, I think you would probably fit in quite well: you are conversational, and community-oriented, and you meet the criteria. Hope this helps. A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Perhaps something along the line of light white colors sparsely accented by sea colors, like Aquamarine and Dodger Blue? I like the idea of using subtle, light colors like Alice Blue, Ghost White, or White Smoke. Those are really rough guidelines, it's ok if the colors are different, I just would like to see a better layout, and it looks like you are good at that ;).--The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 20:25, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Done! I used alice blue, aquamarine borders, and a darker shade of blue for the background. It hasn't been tested in IE though, so consider yourself warned. ;) If you're happy with the way everything looks, please consider adding a note here, but I'd be glad to tweak things further if you want anything changed. Your request for help

Hi Ikiroid!

I would be more than happy to help you in any way I can. I have two featured articles under my belt (see Civil Air Patrol and Half-Life 2) and I'm currently working on another (Half-Life). When I plan on working on an article with the intent of making it a featured article, there are a few things that I like to do to prepare.

First, alert at least one, preferably two and possibly three other people who would be interested in assisting you towards accomplishing this task. They should be people who are interested in the subject of the article in the first place as well as being at least somewhat knowledgable on the subject. All participants need to be able to work together without causing too much grief (you do not want someone who will be abrasive or pushing a specific point of view aside from a neutral one).

Sometimes, an article might be so badly formatted or disorganized (such as fencing) that it would be almost disruptive to make major changes at once (i.e. the article would make even less sense or be less comprehensive). If this is the case, then create a subpage off of that same article called [[Article/Featured overhaul]] (or something to that effect). Use that space to recreate the article without disrupting the original. After it has been recreated, then replace the low-quality version with yours (remember to seek general consensus on this one).

Second, alert the rest of the [article's] world that you plan on pushing the article to FA status. Use the article's talk page to do this. What I like to do is create a new header (titled "Featured article push" or something similar) along with your intentions and status. I also like to place a copy of {{FAPath}} on the talk page so people can click and see where the article is in terms of its status. Take a look at Talk:Half-Life_2/Archive_3#Featured_drive to see an example of what I'm talking about.

After the necessary preperations are complete, start looking at the FAPath. You should do some research and get as many citable and reliable sources on the subject as possible. The article absolutely should be liberally cited from reliable sources. If you're writing an article about World War II, then you would want to cite history texts and websites. A guideline about websites: do not cite websites that use or are from Angelfire, Geocities, Tripod, Lycos or MySpace (unless, for example, it's a band's official site (and in that case, you might want to investigate the notability of said band/person/pet)).

The third step of the Featured Article Path, checking against the featured article critera, is probably the most critical step that you will go through. I highly suggest that you be moderately to severely critical of your [group's] work. Do not stand for anything that is out of place, lacking, or in need of attention. The harsher you are towards your own work, the higher the quality of said work will rise, and the less likely that people will find some major blocking fault with the article when they look at the article's featured article candidate page (which I will get to in a minute).

After you and your group feel that the article is ready for FAC, put it to peer review. I will be honest: peer review is either hit or miss. For me, both of the times that I used peer review were miss. However, some people will object to an FAC without second thought if there is no peer review tag on the article's talk page. Fair? In theory, yes, in practice, no. However, that's reality.

After a peer review has been done, check the article over at least twice. See if there are any inconsistances or any minor problems that you or peer review might have missed. Gramatical/spelling mistakes are common, as Wikipedia does not have built-in spellchecking at this time. Once your group feels that it is ready for FAC, take a deep breath and submit it to Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates.

During this period, people will either Support the article and provide their reasoning, or Object to the article and provide their reasoning. If FA status is objected to, the person objecting must provide a workable and constructive reason. Objections such as "this article is fluffy" are not helpful and will most likely not hinder the FAC. However, you should make every reasonable effort to appease the objector. Ask for their wishes and suggestions and find out what it is that they object to. Fix it, or find a quality compromise. Do not stress out if after twenty times (or some other crazy number) someone just does not change their objection. Raul654, the FA director, will look at each vote and the discussion objectively and he will judge based upon what he sees. The key here is to satisfy all of the workable and reasonable objections, not the vague and confusing ones (despite your best efforts to do so).

If your FAC passes, then you deserve a well-earned pat on the back and a cold one. If not, do not worry. Address the concerns of those who objected and apply for FAC in two to three weeks.

So, that's pretty much it. I didn't go into specifics like how to follow the manual of style or how to use the citation syntax correctly, but I'm sure that you can figure that out. Re: Can you help me with a reference you added?

Hi Ikiroid, thanks for your message about the Pullum and Laduslaw reference in the IPA article. I do have the book but I'm afriad I can't remember exactly why I added that reference. To be honest I probably just thought it was a useful reference in the "further reading" or "bibliography" sense, rather than attributing anything specific in the article. I'm flattered that you have sought me out to help, but on wikipedia, it's never a good idea to recruit people to a straw poll....too many bad things have happened as a result of that in earlier polls. I would give a comment or two, although I believe that my lack of knowledge in diacritic names (or which ones are official and most frequently used, anyway) couldn't contribute much to the discussion. Looking over the poll, most of what I know has been discussed already, and restating things that have already been said only makes me appear uninformed and/or stubborn. Sorry I'm not of more help. By the way, I saw that you went on a hiatus after you recieved a slap on the wrist for recruiting votes. You shouldn't be so distraught because you made a mistake—everyone here has made at least a few, and while it may have been unnecessary to attack a newbie like yourself over such a thing, you shouldn't let it destroy your hope in editing. Re: Pronunciation of "æ"

I first learned Farsi in Tehran and lived there my early childhood. As soon as I turned 12, I left the country for Europe. I came to southern California after some time and this is where I learned English and currently reside.

Take the word bad. The vowel in Farsi is shorter but in English you first open your mouth but end it in a schwa. A lot of English speakers who learned it in their childhood don't notice the second stage that produces this sound notwithstanding their correct replication thereof. Whenever I said bad the way I used to in Farsi, native speaker looked at me as if I had uttered something that wasn't natural to their ears. Later, I started saying bed for bad; this made things a heck of lot worse.

I had no native friends and no one in school ever talked about such nuances. However, one day I came across Pronounce It Perfectly in English (Pronounce It Perfectly in/Book and 3 Audio Cassettes) (Audio Cassette) [2], and finally American Accent Training (American Accent Training) (Audio CD) [3]. The first book has a diagram of the mouth showing the two stages for "æ" as in bad, cat, et cetera. These two resources helped me make tremendous strides towards improving my pronunciation.

I am uncertain as to what word has the "eə" sound. Perhaps you're referring to the vowel in bed.

I'm sorry I didn't answer earlier. To be truthful, I wasn't exactly sure of how to answer, I've been trying to figure out how the Farsi "æ" is different from the English "æ." I think I figured it out.

Notice how the "æ" sound in california english is towards the bottom left.

When an American pronounces the "æ" sound, they usually don't pronounce it as a pure sound. For example, the word "mad" may be pronounced in Midwestern English as "mjæd" (myad) or "miæd" (mee-add). Southern American English and California English it is pronounced like "mæəd" (meah-uhd) or "meəd" (may-uhd). The english way is usually "mɑd" or "mad" (both like mahd).

But Farsi's "æ" is to the top right.

The farsi pronounciation of "æ" is somewhat more pure, although it is still not a true "æ" sound. It is pronounced a bit farther back in the mouth, so it resembles a cross between the vowel in "bad" and the vowel in "bird" if it is said the Received pronunciation (standard british) way.

So basically, neither farsi nor english really pronounce the vowel in its pure form, they both change it in some way, but each change goes in a different direction. This means that when you learnt english, you had to learn it as a new vowel because it was so different. I hope this helps.--The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 16:35, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
