John Hersey High School / Beatbox Contest

edit

Hi. I noticed you restored content on the John Hersey High School page about a "Beatboxing Contest" that had been removed by another user. I can easily understand how you would believe that it was vandalism (page blanking, after all, is pretty obvious vandalism). However, the section in question is a fake section that is being posted by a group of members of the high school. I just figured I'd mention it in case it came up again. Thanks for your understanding. Aschmitz 03:04, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Abstractopera.JPG

edit

I'm sorry, but this image is a derivative work of Image:OperaLogo.png. As such, the makers of Opera retain rights to the image. Your image takes a copy of the Opera logo and superimposes it over a background. This does not release Opera of their rights to the original image. You have rights to the background, but they retain rights to the logo. If this were not the case, then anyone could take any corporate logo, superimpose it over a background, and sell t-shirts with the new image on it. Your creation does not transfer rights from them to you. Thus, I've retagged your image, removed it from the userbox it was used on, and labeled the image as an orphaned fair use image. This means it will be deleted in seven days unless it becomes used in an actual encyclopedia article. If you have questions about this, I'd be happy to answer. Thank you, --Durin 13:30, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Durin, thank you for your clear and polite message regarding Abstractopera.JPG. You said the image was OperaLogo.png, but pasted onto a different backround and I can understand why you think that; it looks very similar. However, if you take a closer look you will notice that it is not. First of all, I would like to say to keep in mind that both "O's" are the same size when comparing distances.
  • In operalogo.png (lets call that "A" to save time) the space in the hole from the first appearance of red to the second (vertically) in the "O" is 278 pixels (approximately).
Abstractopera.JPG (lets call it "B") is only about 263 pixels.
  • In "A" the width of the space in the hole (first to second occurence of red again) is 104 px.
In "B" it is 114 px.
  • In "A" the width of the area where the light is most abundant in the top left of the "O" is about 7.6 px
In "B" it is around 10 px
  • The most major difference between the two images is that "A" has (towards the bottom left section of hole in the "O") a thickness of 11 px
Image "B" has a thickness of 50.2 px

Thank You.--eskimospy (talkcontribscount) 01:09, 15 May 2007 (UTC) Reply

  • The differences you note are miniscule. If I were to make similar adaptations to say, the logo for Coca-Cola and then make a million t-shirts for sale around the world, the lawyers would be on my doorstep faster than I could put one of the t-shirts on. --Durin 01:14, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Another newbie on your doorstep

edit

I've just begun contributing and could benefit from adoption. At this point I'd expect to edit in math, sci, music, language, ... and to generally clean up grammar, spelling, &c all over the place. These last are a particular strength. I'm fascinated with how much structure and culture there is WRT maintaining the site, eager to learn what makes a well behaved contributor, but a bit put off by how much there is to learn! I feel an absolute imperative to defend and build accurate and helpful content in order to make the record as useful and correct as possible. I'm on the East Coast of the US, but I travel on business a lot. Feel like taking me under your wing? PaulTanenbaum 18:55, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unusual Adoption Request

edit

Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.

Thank you!

Speedy deletion of Mideast Minute

edit

A tag has been placed on Mideast Minute requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for web content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. - Jameson L. A little while ago you thanked me for a picture on Ecole Rockingham SChool. I was just wondering how someone living in Israel has a connection to Rockingham - I'm wondering maybe you grew up in Halifax or something. I went to the school myself, and now I live in Toronto. Thanks for starting the Page in the first place! (Yohowithrum (talk) 23:09, 12 December 2007 (UTC))Reply

I went from Primary to Grade five which was from 1996-2001 I believe. I had Mr. Little for about half of that time until we got a new Principle Named Ms. Rowe. I believe she is still there and has since got married. Anyway, it is always very nice to meet someone who went to Rockingham! Its also neat to meet that person on Wikipedia. Cheers! Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Demonoid.jpeg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Demonoid.jpeg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:48, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Flames.ogg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.

Hi, eskimospy. I modified your image on white americans to make it look clearer. However, I'm new at this and I don't know my way around completely.
