edit

Hi, Interwiki links your bot added to pages like Portal:Current events/2007 August 9 are showing up in August 2007 via transclusion (see long list of arabic interwiki links). Not having these interwiki links might be better than surrounding them with noinclude tags, seeing the general absence of interwiki links on most these pages (although it may be accidental rather than deliberate). I haven't found a specific page that addresses this issue yet. --Bxj (talk) 20:10, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why do you disagree with using of tag "noinclude"? A simple removing of these interwikis is not the solution of the problem, because any other bot can add them again. There are some posibilities to prevent of such adding, but all of them have the same comlexivity as surrounding with noinclude tags. --Emaus (talk) 06:22, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
At least when I last checked, August 2007 showed a list of transcluded interwikis because there were no use of noinclude. I think there are two options to this problem, and I don't know enough to know which would be a better solution. On the one hand, these date articles seem to exist primarily for transclusion. If so, maybe people felt these articles don't need interwikis. On the other hand, maybe interwikis actually should be added to these articles and your bot was the first to add them. I leave the solution up to you. --Bxj (talk) 01:15, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Blauwkoe (talk) 12:21, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

It is not very easy to understand what are you talking about.

As I understand, you are talking about an article "Hancock (village), New York" and you disaree with adding of spanish interwiki es:Hancock (villa). But then you should go to Spanish Wikipedia and rename that article into what you want. And since you have a dictionary it will be not hard for you. --Emaus (talk) 04:45, 16 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hi, this bot has been wrongly adding interlanguage links to several pages. This edit and this edit are examples of mistakes. In the first case, the bot added pages for Ximen Qing on other Wikis to a character list page on English Wikipedia. The problem is, the page on English Wikipedia contains a list of many characters (including Ximen Qing), and not an article for only that particular character. Therefore, the interlanguage links to the character's individual articles on other Wikipedias should not be added. Is there any way to stop this? It's tiring to revert the bot's edits again and again. Thanks. Lonelydarksky (暗無天日) contact me (聯絡) 03:08, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I removed links to English wikipedia from other wikis and now everything should be Ok. But the best way to prevent of these incorrect iwikis adding is the creating of articles about Ximen Qing and Xuzhu in English wikipedia. --Emaus (talk) 16:41, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

In this edit, while editing the mhr: link, your bot also moved the ro: link to be before the nl: link. I have corrected it.

Xqbot in this edit did a similar thing recently – is there some common table of languages that is out of order? —Coroboy (talk) 06:12, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

You're right, it is the error. You can see interwiki sorting table for English Wikipedia here. Probably, it is the result of merging of Moldovan Wikipedia (which had preffix "mo:") with Romanian Wikipedia. --Emaus (talk) 16:36, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
This doesn't explain the bot error - the sorting table you referred to has 'ro' in the right place, and has had for a long time. —Coroboy (talk) 01:06, 21 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it is the bot's error, which is discussed here. And as I described before, bot moves "ro" into the place of "mo" since it considers them as synonyms. --Emaus (talk) 18:28, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

optimistic fixing of double redirects

edit

On May 22, someone has merged Graphic display resolutions with Computer display standards without achieving the community consensus. This was reverted on the next day, but the EmausBot already fixed the redirects from all the shorthand abbreviations like WXGA, WUXGA WSXGA+ etc. [3] which are now broken.

Finding and reverting all these manually would be too much of a burden, so if there is an automated way to revert these changes, it would be much appreciated. --Dmitry (talkcontibs ) 07:55, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bot spreading vandalism

edit

I noticed your bot spreading vandalism that occurred at Reading F.C., with edits [4] [5]. I was wondering if you could check to identify any other places your bot spread it to. More generally, is there anything that can be done to prevent this sort of thing from happening, or at least some way of flagging it for review when it does happen? Monty845 01:20, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Found a couple more, [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]. Hope that is all of them. Monty845 01:25, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
You found all of them. Now, there is only redirection to this page. I have some script to revert of such edits of bot, but I don't know how to prevent them. It is possible to add some delay (for example, 1 hour) after edit, but in this case there were about 9 hours between vandalism and it's reverting, so such action will be ineffecive. Adding of vert-very long delay also looks insensible. --Emaus (talk) 04:43, 1 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Homatropine

edit

Please take care that your bot doesn't modify "Homatropine" to "Homatropine methylbromide" again. These are two different drugs. One is a tertiary amine, the other is a quaternary ammonium base. I have reverted that. Stop the bot from reverting (vandalizing) that again. 70.137.151.84 (talk) 21:45, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

This is not vadalism! This is the result of redirection in nl.wiki. If you disagree with that redirection, you can present your views there, but now the best way is just to remove it. --Emaus (talk) 22:50, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I see, for heavens sake, this is wrong in the nl.wiki too, and has been wrong in the en.wiki, where I fixed it. It turns out that even Drugbank links to the wrong information and cites it. Wiki is becoming a public danger in spreading misinformation even into vital compendiaries, where such a mix up can be life threatening. Besides in en.wiki I fixed a false redirect of "Homatropine methylbromide" to "Homatropine", such it now points correctly to "Methylhomatropine". But the redirect does not take effect! What is wrong? Can you take a look? 70.137.151.84 (talk) 00:01, 13 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

ok. the redirect problem was caused by a wiki bug with a known bugzilla entry. this has been taken care of by adding example to bugzilla. The dutch nl.wiki entry is unsolved. 70.137.154.88 (talk) 05:23, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bot mistake

Your bot mistakenly changed Nina Dobrev's wiki page. Nina Dobrev's middle name is spelled with a "C" and not a "K." You may want to check her IMBD which clearly states the correct spelling. Hi, we seem to be in an edit war. I'm not happy to link this page to the Spanish and Ukranian pages of the same name. They do not correspond to this one, but are about some other species misidentified with this name (C. laevigata, C. rhipidophylla, C. monogyna, who knows ...). The Catalan page corresponds well, however. Nadiatalent (talk) 23:43, 28 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • What's your proposition? Probably, two pages from es.wiki and uk.wiki should be deleted but I am not the biologist and I can't to justify of its deletion. So, if you can plaese do it. My bot just can to remove interwikis from other wikis, bu it's not very good solution. --Emaus (talk) 00:55, 29 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Whataya Want from Me

edit
  Moved from User talk:EmausBot

Now that I have read the Discussion page and Wiki: Naming conventions (capitalization) I understand the change in the title page at http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Whataya_Want_From_Me and after reading Naming conventions (music) am I correct in my understanding that every time the song is referred to within any wiki page it also needs to have the word "from" in lowercase? So what I need to do is change all references to WWFM to lowercase "from" ? Is that all that needs cleaning up on this page? Or is there something else I'm not aware of. And how do I then get the tag removed? Thanks for your help, I am new at this. Omgoodnessme (talkcontribs) 00:27, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Completed edit of all WWFM "from" to lowercase on Whataya Want from Me Can you remove the tag now - or is there something else that needs correction. Thanks. (Omgoodnessme (talk) 01:51, 15 November 2011 (UTC))Reply

  • My bot just changed interwikis, that are links into other languages. My bot is not the real user who knows the rules and it just checks the correspondence between links to the articles on other languages and theirs titles on that languages.
  • The "Naming conventions" is about the titles of the articles and not about theirs bodies, so the capitalized "From" can be correct in the body. But I'm not sure. Probably, the best way is asking here: Wikipedia:New contributors' help page. Cheers! --Emaus (talk) 16:49, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect interwiki addition

edit
  Moved from User talk:EmausBot

Last year I've removed all interwikies in other wikies referring to Reportage (album) instead of reportage to stop bots from adding incorrect interwikies and now for some reason EmausBot (and two other bots) did it all over again? I don't see where this is coming from this time but don't feel like revisiting all of those other wikies to undo the damage this time. Please clarify what's going on here. The Seventh Taylor (talk) 22:09, 17 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • In case of my bot the source of this was the article in Kazakh Wiki. The best way to prevent of such editing is making the page reportage as real article and not the redirect. The page News is not a good target for these interwikis since it has its own interwikis and then they form an interwiki conflict. By the way, I removed links to Reportage (album) from other wikis. --Emaus (talk) 13:33, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Witborsduiker

edit

Could you please explain why the change of White-breasted Cormorant‎ in Afrikaans "witborsduiker" to "witborskormorant"? The latter is unnatural at best; if you go to the coast and speak to fishermen about kormorante, probably none of them will even recognise the word. All my life they have been duikers. What is the idea? Of my dictionaries (I did check, see? Just in case it was me having missed a regional usage) only one gave kormoraan, and not kormorant at all. This makes it sound like German, not Afrikaans; not even Dutch! JonRichfield (talk) 16:48, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bot problem with redirects

edit

I discussed this at User_talk:Avicennasis#Bot_issues and it applies to EmausBot as well. The bots are complicating a dispute because a user is removing 11 pages about anatomical muscles and redirecting the names to a new article. The bots have been 'updating' to correct double-redirects, but the problem is when we restore the deleted articles from their redirected state, redirects that previously pointed there no longer do, and still point to the new page. I had to manually set them back.

I'm wondering if there's a way to detect this so that if the page a redirect pointed to previously ceases to be a redirect, it could be restored to its earlier version. Y12J (talk) 22:26, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't think all of them could be detected, about the only way I can figure is to create a log of redirect pages which have been changed by the bot, and intermittantly scroll the location of the page it was directed to previously (the replacedPAGENAME) to see whether or not it remains a redirect or if it has become an article (or been restored to one, in this case). If it is an article and not a redirect, the page that directed to it previously could be restored to its previous URL. Y12J (talk) 10:31, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

iw on lang articles

edit

Hi,

I see you've been adding a lot of iw links to language articles. A couple thousand WP-en articles with language infoboxes still don't have iw's, though I suspect that most of them should. (In Piedmontese, at least, it looks as though every ISO language name has been given at least a bot-created stub.) Are you planning on linking the rest? I don't know how you're going about it, but I suspect that if you start with Piedmontese and follow the rd's in WP-en, you'll get most of them. At least I think all of our articles now link from the current ISO name (or names, when there's not a 1:1 correspondence), though some of those have changed since the Piedmontese stubs were created. — kwami (talk) 02:23, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

how to override interwiki linking on a case-by-case basis?

edit

The article "Barack Obama citizenship conspiracy theories" has been getting interwiki links from the French Wikipedia article "Théorie du complot sur la citoyenneté de Barack Obama". The French article is horridly incomplete and (IMO) completely inappropriate to be linked to from the English Wikipedia.

I tried commenting out the interwiki link in the French article, and then removed the interwiki link here in English, but Emausbot added it back. I went back to the French article and completely removed the interwiki link (then removed the offending link from the English article), but I'm worried that someone on frwiki is going to notice the missing enwiki link in the French article and (not realizing why it's not there, or perhaps disagreeing with my reasons for removing the link) add it back — and then we'll be back to square one here in the English article — and if I press the matter, I might find myself blocked on frwiki for edit-warring over there.

Is there any way to flag an article here (English Wikipedia) so that your bot will not add an interwiki link from some given foreign-language edition? It seems to me that if such an escape mechanism doesn't exist, it really needs to be added ASAP in order to preserve the integrity of articles in the English Wikipedia. — Richwales 05:16, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • You can comment french interwiki, like this, but in English wikipedia or you can set template {{Bots}} (with or without some options) to avoid any bots' edits. But I don't understand why these articles shouldn't be connected. --Emaus (talk) 10:19, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
I did, in fact, comment out the interwiki link in the French article (that was my edit which you cited above) — and I removed the interwiki link in the English article — but your bot still added the link back five hours later on the basis of the commented-out interwiki link.
The {{Bots}} template may be a workaround to this problem, though it seems to be overkill; is there any option to this template that will specifically shut off interwiki link maintenance actions by bots, but without blocking other (and hopefully beneficial) bot maintenance tasks?
As for why these particular articles should not be connected: The French article in this case is, at best, a stub, describing in detail only one of the anti-Obama "birther" theories (that of Joe Arpaio), and that one being done in a heavily pro-Arpaio, anti-Obama fashion. The French article has been the subject of repeated edit-warring / nonsense vandalism since its creation the other day. Material of this sort would not be acceptable in the English-language article — not only on general principle, but also because of WP:BLP and community-imposed article probation on all Obama-related articles in the English Wikipedia — and that means (IMO) that we shouldn't be allowing it in through the back door via an interwiki link to a problematic article (even one in a foreign language).
And, to top things off, the French article in question appears to have been created and (so far) maintained by a confirmed sock — now indef-blocked — of someone who was site-banned and indef-blocked from the English Wikipedia in 2008 for disruptive editing — so, in effect, our bot-automated interwiki linking infrastructure is being abused in this case to circumvent the enwiki community's site ban of this particular editor. I should probably add that if I had originally realized who was responsible for the French article, I would have tried to take more foreceful action at frwiki than to simply comment out the interwiki link and hope people over there would understand there was a problem — though even now, I'm not at all sure if I'll be able to get the frwiki admins to agree with our view of the situation, so (IMO) we need a way to exercise local control over individual interwiki links, in order to maintain the integrity of our own articles when they are the subjects of attacks of this sort by resourceful disruptive editors. — Richwales 14:27, 22 July 2012 (UTC) 14:34, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Commenting works on that wiki where it is. It means that this edit avoids of new adding of English interwiki into the French article. To avoid of adding of French interwiki into the English article you can add this interwiki but in the commented state. When bot finds the commented interwiki then it don't add it again. --Emaus (talk) 17:55, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Revert warring bot?

edit

What is your bot engaged in at Category:1st-century BC establishments and Category:1st-century establishments. Aren't bots obliged to concede when they are reverted? __meco (talk) 07:54, 18 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Of course they were, but that's beside the point. When a user reverts a bot the bot should not revert back. Don't we have rules even for bot operators that contain that clause? __meco (talk) 16:59, 18 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • No, there are no such rules. And I know at least 2 reasons why:
  • 1) user, who reverts, can do it incorrectly (for example, because he is a vandal)
  • 2) if something occurs in one language project (in this case it is English wiki) then the same problem can happen in other language projects and bot can fix it all more effectively. So, the best way is asking of bot owner to see the situation.

Iwiki mess

edit

Hi there! Could you please sort the interwiki mess on the Tsentaroy, Kurchaloyevsky District, Chechen Republic page? I cleaned them up in the past, but for whatever reason the bot reinstated the links (which I thought bots aren't supposed to be doing after being reverted?). The case is confusing because there are two places called Tsentaroy in the Chechen Republic, and the other one is occasionally referred to as "Tsentoroy". I'd clean this up again, but I'm not sure what it is exactly that triggers the bot to reinstate the links, so I'm dumping this task onto you instead :) Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); November 2, 2012; 16:31 (UTC)

  • As I see, norwegian and turkish articles are about Tsentoroy from Kurchaloyevsky District because they desribe it as a birthplace of Ramzan Kadyrov and as village with population 5658 (2002 census). So, they exactly match to this article. A dutch article is about the birthplace of Kadyrov with population 5658 too, but it is set to Nozhay-Yurtovsky District, and this looks like an error, since the real Tsentoroy from Nozhay-Yurtovsky District is not the birthplace of Kadyrov and has lesser population. So, i think that that article is incorrect. But I don't know whether is necessary to link it with the english article. --Emaus (talk) 19:17, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your bot incorrectly changes perfectly valid inter-wiki links into faulty ones, if the target page is a redirect page, as it happened in this edit: [17]. Please take care not to bypass redirect pages, as redirect pages are valid targets for interwiki links. Please also fix recent edits accordingly. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 00:13, 25 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • As I know, the redirects are not valid targets for interwikis. And all standard interwiki-bots change link to redirect to a link to its target. It is no described in the rules, whether it correct or not. But it is a common practice. --Emaus (talk) 13:23, 26 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • Well, redirects must be and are valid targets for interwiki links, see, for example, the style guide for redirect pages in the English Wikipedia, where interwiki links are explicitly described as valid in redirect pages: WP:RE/SG.
Actually, if redirects weren't valid targets for interwiki links a lot of new problems would occur, as there often is no 1:1 relationship of terms between different languages.
In our example, there is a 1:1 relationship betweeen en:Pin stripes and de:Nadelstreifen, but not between en:Pin stripes and de:Rapport (Textil) (which currently links back to en:Houndstooth in the English WP, however, this link is wrong, as the equivalent of en:Houndstooth is de:Hahnentritt (Muster). So far, I found no direct equivalent to de:Rapport (Textil) in the English WP.) Since there can be only one interwiki link per article per language, the only non-conflictive way to describe such x-to-1 relationsships is to use redirect pages, that's why interwiki links are valid in redirect pages. If a bot now tries to bypass them, it is bound to create a mess. It is clearly logically wrong behaviour.
Also, redirects may point to subsections in another article (in fact, our de:Nadelstreifen example does), which is easy enough to track back using "what links here" for maintenance, but it is impossible to track this back into other language WPs (different name spaces). Therefore, direct interwiki links to subsections are highly discouraged, instead they should better go to a redirect page in the target WP, and this redirect page may then point to the desired subsection in the other article instead).
Actually, I can think of only very few cases, where it would be okay for a bot to bypass a redirect. One of them would be to avoid a double redirect. The other would be to solve conflictive interwiki links (but then the bot should ask a user to resolve the problem instead of trying to fix it without human interaction). In the above mentioned case, there were no conflictive interwiki links, so the bot should have left the interwiki links between en:Pin stripes <--> de:Nadelstreifen unmodified and add de:Nadelstreifen to simple:Pin stripes and nl:Krijtstreep.
--Matthiaspaul (talk) 21:39, 26 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Once more your bot destroyed a valid inter-wiki link: [18]. Please stop and fix your bot. You must not continue to run your bot until it is fixed. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 00:10, 29 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
First, the guide WP:RE/SG (just a guide, not the rule!) allows to place the interwiki-link on the redirection page and not specifies whether it possible to make the interwiki-link from another page to the redirection page.
Second, of course, there are lot of problems on interwiki with no any absolutely acceptible solution. For example, see Interwiki conflicts. And I see some problems in your idea too: when some user reads a regular article, he sees interwiki-links and can go through them; but if he go to the redirection page, then he is automatically transferred to the target page of this redirecion, so he doesn't see interwiki-links and these links are useless for this user.
And third. My bot is a standard pywikipedia bot. It uses the same programm code as many others interwiki-bots and it isn't possible to change only my bot. The best way in this case is opening of discussion on Bot owners' noticeboard, or on any other noticeboard with the involvement of multiple users. And if your proposition is accepted, then it will be implemented in the programm code. --Emaus (talk) 22:46, 29 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Inaccurate translation

edit

For the article Southeast Alaska the bot added a translation for the "Panhandle" of Alaska to be "du Su-Est", which is simply a a restatement of the other name of the region, Southeast Alaska. It seems that a better translation would be "Manche" (the handle of a cooking pan), but I am not a French speaker so there may be a better word than this suggestion. Coastwise (talk) 17:15, 29 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • As I know, an exact translation is not very appropriative to geographical names. Sometimes they are used with full translation and somtimes without any translation. And I don't know what is in this case. --Emaus (talk) 22:07, 29 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
In this case an exact translation IS appropriate, because Panhandle is a vernacular, descriptive name and not an official name. "du Su-Est" causes a repeat of the official name Souteast [Alaska], and is therefore not appropriate. If Manche is not appropriate as a translation, then no translation should be provided at all for Panhandle. Coastwise (talk) 02:33, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wrong interwikis

This robot (and some others) are doing a mess with Nahor. In many wikipedias, there are articles about a generic Nahor, as disambiguity pages, and articles about individual Nahors. This robot is linking the generic Nahor to Nahor, the son of Terah. Compare: fr:Nahor, fr:Nahor (fils de Terah), ca:Nahor, ca:Nahor (fill de Tèrah), etc. Albmont (talk) 17:26, 28 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • There is a problem since the page Nahor describes two different men. I think that the best way is splitting of this page into 2 individual pages about them and 1 ambiguation page. --Emaus (talk) 19:58, 28 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • That's what the other wikipedias are doing, but while this solution is not applied, there are three classes of Nahors, and the robots keep confusing them:
  1. Nahor, de:Nahor and the disambiguity pages fr:Nahor, ca:Nahor, pt:Nahor (this one should be Naor...), etc
  2. Nahor (son of Terah) (this article does not exist), fr:Nahor (fils de Terah), pt:Naor (filho de Terá), etc
  3. Nahor (son of Serug) (this article does not exist), fr:Nahor (fils de Seroug), nl:Nahor (zoon van Serug), etc.
      • I don't see why "this solution is not applied". This page was created on 2005 and there were no discussions about splitting. So, I don't see any objections for splitting. --Emaus (talk) 00:38, 3 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your bot, crosswiki

edit

Hi Emaus! I have just added the feature to addbot to add links to wikidata from pages that it scans across wikis. I am guessing that your bot scans wikidata irc feed for new lang links created on there and unfortunately I think that our two bots are going to massively conflict. Currently your bot edits once for each lang link it detects, my bot currently moves these links in bulk (mainly) but your bot it too fast to allow this to happen, ie. if I were to move 50 links to wikidata across a period of 1 min for an article your bot would likely preform multiple edits rounded off by one by my bot that would then edit with everything else it has done. (I hope this all makes sense as I realise I have been rambling), anyway, is there any chance that you could make your bot ignore all wikidata edits by Addbot? Or add some sort of delay before detecting a change and trying to edit the wiki article? Cheers ·Add§hore· Talk To Me! 09:45, 12 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi! My bot has 2 different groups of working scenarios:
1) Start from local wiki. Bot gets some category tree or some article range, etc, and compares with Wikidata sitelinks. In this case bot edits the only language project.
2) Start from Wikidata. Bot gets rc or some item range and checks all language projects where it can edit. In this case bot updates all language projects.
The first case is still actual there are lot of pages with not completely removed interwikis like in this case, where german interwiki was directed on a redirection. My bot can check whether the page on interwiki was moved or deleted and works very accurate. But, when I see that this check is done, I'll stop the first scenario and use only the second scenario. --Emaus (talk) 13:12, 13 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, I think it is the second scenario that was conflicting with my bot (the RC part) as when addbot added a link on wikidata your bot would seem to jump to that language wiki and remove said interwiki link almost instantly (although in my latest batch of trial edits this seems to have stopped!). I am aware of how many pages still have IW links as I have a local database with 10,000,000 article names across languages for my bot to finish running over :) ·Add§hore· Talk To Me! 02:23, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Emaus, once more your bot screwed up inter-wiki links with redirects. I reported this to you already and unfortunately it appears as if you still haven't fixed your bot. This is really annoying. If your bot cannot handle such cases when migrating links to wikidata, then, by all means, don't run it, as otherwise you harm the project by destroying carefully created inter-wiki links.

Scenario:

Existing inter-wiki links:

en:Stockert Radio Telescope <-> de:Astropeiler Stockert
en:Stockert (hill) <-> de:Stockert (Berg)

Anti-parallel redirects:

en:Stockert (hill) -> en:Stockert Radio Telescope
de:Astropeiler Stockert -> de:Stockert (Berg)

This scenario of 4 pages (2 in each WP) is not trivial, but nevertheless correct, as the English article focusses mainly on the radio telescope, whereas the German article discusses mostly the hill but also includes the telescope. The whole point of migrating to wikidata is to make it easier to handle non-trivial and multi-dimensional cases like this one better - but if your bot screws up the existing and fully working connections in the migration process, nothing is won. This is, what your bot created ([22]):

It is obvious how this happened, therefore it should be easy to fix it in the code. I ask you to either enhance your bot to properly handle such cases or to at least detect them and then refrain from changing anything in the network. Sooner or later a knowledgable human will come along and migrate to wikidata without messing things up, and there's enough work to do for bots in more trivial cases, where nothing can go wrong. Do not continue using your bot until either solution has been implemented. Thanks. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 12:22, 8 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

EmausBot and BLP

edit

Please see this contribution page: [23].  This was used to attack a politician at 2013-06-15T17:56:13.  The edit was reverted at 2013-06-15T18:53:57.  But by 2013-06-15T17:57:12, EmausBot was spreading the BLP violation.

It is my technical understanding, perhaps flawed, that double redirects are entirely ok.  So would it be possible to not "fix" a double redirect until at least 24 hours has elapsed?

I have posted a similar note at User talk:Avicennasis in reference to AvicBot.

Thank you, Unscintillating (talk) 21:42, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Chronotherapy - please help!

edit

Either you've messed up or I have (not unlikely the latter).

When one searches "chronotherapy" it now redirects to "Chronotherapy (treatment scheduling)". But it shouldn't redirect to anything. It should instead allow one to choose between the two articles beginning with that word.

There are now the two articles:

It is now possible to get to "Chronotherapy (sleep phase)" only by searching on exactly that term. It shouldn't be this way. Can you fix it, please?

(I am watching this page.)

Hordaland (talk) 06:11, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ooops, I see, too, that the Talk page is correct only for one of the two articles, the sleep phase one. The treatment scheduling's Talk page has disappeared. (Guess I should have asked someone else to do the work in the first place. Sorry.) Hordaland (talk) 06:23, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bot replicating "redirect" vandalism edits to legit redirects

Hi, I just discovered this gem edit made by the bot, redirecting a Bitcoin exchange to Play money. Apparently just minutes before, some vandal had redirected the whole Bitcoin article to Play money: edit. The article was restored just a second before your bot broke the redirect. I don't know how you would address this, maybe waiting for a few hours before "fixing" redirects, but certainly the bot should not be helping vandals. -- intgr [talk] 21:24, 24 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Reset / rerun emausbot on Authority Control linkage

edit

Hello, I just created an article, Bitter Daisies, in which I missed a colon at the beginning of an interlanguage link. Because of that, I believe that when the Emausbot automatic Authority Control process ran[24], it seems to have mislinked to the actress missing the colon at the beginning, instead of the article subject itself. Speedy deletion nomination of Chahat Pandey

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Chahat Pandey requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Problem with bot edits

edit

Hello, Emaus,

I'm not sure how to address this but we have several vandals, one particularly anti-semitic one, who change article title when they move them to scandalous names. Somehow, before an admin can move & protect the article, your bot has changed dozens of redirects to the new, inaccurate and often offensive name. Luckily, AnomieBot3 catches many of these mistakes but, for some reason, your bot doesn't change them back, or revert its edits, and these have to be handled by a human editor.

You don't seem to be active any more but it would be great if either a) your bot had a delay of an hour or so before making changes to prevent vandalism from spreading to other pages or/and b) it reverted or redid its edits when an article is moved back to its original title. I don't know why EmausBot is so quick to change vandalized article redirects but not quick to redo these redirects when the article is moved back. Thank you. Liz Read! edit
Bots Newsletter, January 2022

BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the ninth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Vicious bot-on-bot edit warring... superseded tasks... policy proposals... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

After a long hiatus between August 2019 and December 2021, there's quite a bit of ground to cover. Due to the vastness, I decided in December to split the coverage up into a few installments that covered six months each. Some people thought this was a good idea, since covering an entire year in a single issue would make it unmanageably large. Others thought this was stupid, since they were getting talk page messages about crap from almost three years ago. Ultimately, the question of whether each issue covers six months or a year is only relevant for a couple more of them, and then the problem will be behind us forever.

Of course, you can also look on the bright side – we are making progress, and this issue will only be about crap from almost two years ago. Today we will pick up where we left off in December, and go through the first half of 2020.

Overall
In the first half of 2020, there were 71 BRFAs. Of these,  Y 59 were approved, and 12 were unsuccessful (with  N2 8 denied,  ? 2 withdrawn, and   2 expired).

January 2020

Issues and enquiries are typically expected to be handled on the English Wikipedia. Pages reachable via unified login, like a talk page at Commons or at Italian Wikipedia could also be acceptable [...] External sites like Phabricator or GitHub (which require separate registration or do not allow for IP comments) and email (which can compromise anonymity) can supplement on-wiki communication, but do not replace it.

Conclusion

  • What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?
  • Will Citation bot ever be set free to roam the project?
  • What's the deal with all those book links that InternetArchiveBot is adding to articles?
  • Should we keep using Gerrit for MediaWiki?
  • What if we had a day for bots to make cosmetic edits?

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the February 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

Missionary (LDS Church)

edit

Why'd you change the name to "Mormon missionary"? That's just a nickname; the proper name is "Missionary (LDS Church)". I think you should change it back to its original name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamgorham (talkcontribs) 21:53, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

EmausBot and fixing double redirects

edit

I'm curious as to one aspect of the bot fixing double redirects. Article "A" is moved to "B" and then is moved to "C", but with the redirect suppressed so that "A" is now a redirect to a red link that was "B". Will the bot be able to fix that and redirect "A" to "C"? Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 05:49, 6 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Bad redirect fix

edit

This edit is wrong, going to the wrong dates. DuncanHill (talk) 21:55, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

And there are lots of Lists of Acts that have been split, and the bot now redirects them to half of the split. Not the bot's fault I know, but needs fixing. DuncanHill (talk) 22:03, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Restoring Milltown Luas stop

edit

I’ve decided to go back and revert the Luas stops from tram stop to Luas stop, but it’s not letting me revert Milltown. I believe you’ve created a redirect article for it. Do you think we can fix that and revert the article back? JoshuaW56 (talk) 11:52, 5 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

This edit, for example, changed a correct redirect to the disambiguation page James Cocks to a pointless redirect to a disambiguated name. Please make this stop. BD2412 T 20:17, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Hello. Bot made this edit correctly since it was a redirection at the moment. Please check it. --Emaus (talk) 20:26, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
    • Yes, it does seem that the issue has arisen where some editor has come along and turned the disambiguation page into a redirect, for which this is then (correctly) fixed as a double redirect by the bot, only for the disambiguation page to later be restored. I wish there were some way to catch these. BD2412 T 20:55, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
