Puerto Rican citizenship

edit

That is a great image. Why don't you upload it as a historical document since it is number 001 and post it in the Puerto Rican citizenship page? Maybe you can use this template:{{PD-because}}. Tony the Marine (talk) 23:19, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • It may be deleted, but you can try by placing the following information in the (no reason given!) section. Where did the image come from (website) and that you believe that it is PD because it is a public document from the Puerto Rico State Department. Another thing write that the certificate is of historical significance since it is the first one ever issued, etc. Let's see what happens then. • Now, here is something that has to be made clear. In the early 1800s, the main military powerhouses in the Caribbean were Spain, England, France and Holland (Dutch-Danish). In the article it appears that the island of "San Bartolomé" was "Swedish", yet the Swedes were never a powerhouse. I know that there are various places which are identified as "San Bartolomé". Are we talking about the "San Bartolomé" which is located in the Galápagos Province of Ecuador? That needs to be clarified.

There is something interesting which you may want to read about what happened to Antonio Valero de Bernabe in 1823, in the section "The Liberator from Puerto Rico" Tony the Marine (talk) 19:14, 3 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • I had to correct myself in your article, because I forgot that France gave the island of "San Bartolomé" to Sweden in payment of a debt. They used to do that in those days. The Kingdom of Genoa gave France the island of Corsica to France as a debt payment. Que falta de respecto a los residentes de esa's islas. Tony the Marine (talk) 19:16, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Consensus

edit

It has been suggested that the "List of Puerto Ricans" be moved and renamed "List of notable Puerto Ricans". The current name reflects a misleading title since it is politcally incoreect and may lead to the misconception that any Puerto Rican may be included regardless of the explanation given in the introduction. Wikipedia does not allow that the term "famous" be used since that term depends on the perspection of what an individual may consider what the term "famous" means, however the term "notable" is widely accepted by Wikipedia since there is an established criteria of the meaning of the term and there are variuos "lists" in Wikipedia which currently use the term notable. Therefore, I am calling on a 7 day consensus as to the renaming the current list to "List of notable Puerto Ricans". PR-133

edit

Hi. Regarding your edits HERE, I observe that the references located HERE, HERE and HERE name the street "Federico Parra Duperan", and not "Francisco Parra Duperan" as you stated. Thus there seems to be an inconsistency between the name you added and the name as documented in the citations. Can you clariy your rationale for the changes? Thanks, Mercy11 (talk) 02:25, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes I have seen that in Google maps and in some places they call the street "Federico Parra Duperan" not Francisco Parra DuperÓn as it is actually called. I drive thru that street every day after work and there are three metal plaques in different building calling it by its real name. Also the book i referenced has a small bio of the man which I just created the article and it mentions that ALL of comercio street was renamed Francisco Parra Duperon street. Although to this day most people call most of it Comercio street, I spoke to the lady in charge of the historic archive of ponce and she told me that all of comercio is called F.P.D. street, and that she has been telling the Alcaldia for years to change some of the street signs. So you see I have been researching and found there are 2 mistakes, one, there is no FEDERICO PARRA DUPERAN, and two, there all of Calle Comercio is actually called Calle F. Parra Duperon. El Johnson (talk) 13:46, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the response. My concern is that we document reality as it exists. If we check the maps (google, US Govt, PR gov., Ponce Municipal Gov, USGS, etc), since the street is not named consistently, I think the most reasonable thing to do is to ask, how do the maps, the street signs, building plaques, etc., *most* commonly called it, Comercio and/or Federico Parra Duperan or Francisco Parra Duperan? Who did you speak to at Archivo Historico de Ponce, Gladys Tormos, Elizabeth Armstrong, someone else? While they are both knowlegable about these things, as you know this sort of info needs to be documented in a -secondary- source to be included in Wikipedia. Maybe your source "lady" at Archivo Historico got her info from a certain drawer/box number (this is the way their cataloging system was setup many decades ago) that we could cite. I would be cautions, however, about going just by what a city employee says w/o factual citation that can be checked by others at anytime. You also mention the three building metal plaques naming the street Francisco Parra Duperon. However, if you check the East side of the "Legislatura Municipal Autonoma" building (the old "El Cometa" building) located diagonally across from Banco de Ponce building on Plaza Las Delicias, you will note a "Ave. Jose Celso Barbosa" metal plaque at what everyone knows as Calle Marina. A second similar plaque exists on the West side of the Old Ponce Casino building at Marina and Luna streets. Again, everyone knows that street as Marina street, not Jose C. Barbosa, despite what the metal plaque on some of the buildings say. As for maps, I know they can be a source of inconsistensy at times. For example, at one point Calle Villa was renamed Avenida Simon Bolivar and it appears so in many official maps, yet everyone keeps calling it Calle Villa to this day, including the municipal street signs. (At least for some maps, it is also possible this inconsistency may have to do with not having been updated at the time we access them.) On a related matter, you might know that Avenida Las Americas was recently renamed Boulevar Luis A. Ferre. For now I continue to keep the "Avenida Las Americas" name on the PR-163 article because everyone knows where Avenida Las Americas is, but not everyone knows about Boulevard Luis A. Ferre yet. Keeping Avenida Las Americas in the document helps avoid confusion, and when I get a chance I will also include a note in that other article to the effect that its name was changed to Boulevar Luis A. Ferre. You also say the "real name" of the street is Francisco Parra Duperon, but how do you define "real name"? We should be careful not to give undue due. For example, the book you referenced with the small bio of the Francisco Parra Duperon may be in the minority of sources that call the street Francisco Parra Duperon. A more reasonable way of defining "real name" may be to check what the USPS calls it. For example, Calle 2 in Belgica is now called Calle Cuba, after the USPS mandated a street name change last year. As for PR-133, and given the multitude of names it is known by, I think we should just call it Calle Comercio, but include a note that it goes by the other 4 less commonly known names. What do you think? Saludos, Mercy11 (talk) 15:55, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I talked to Gladys Tormos. In any case the Federico Parra Duperan is the most incorrect name of all of them, since the man whom they named the street after is Francisco Parra Duperón. Here are two internet sources that call it FPD Street, [1], [2] as for the book it mentions that the street is commonly called Calle Comercio, but that it was actually changed to Francisco Parra Duperón. BTW if you could get a copy of the book, it would be of grat use to you since it covers a lot about Ponce and many of its landmarks, clubs, and people. I think that it should be mentioned that it is most commonly called and known as Comercio, but that it was changed by the city to Francisco Parra Duperón. It is reality and we have the sources. El Johnson (talk) 16:19, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

PS I have always wondered, do you live in Ponce? Just curious.. El Johnson (talk) 16:19, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

It is wonderful you have sources! I almost forgot to mention that, after your research, I was inclined to believe that FEDERICO Parra Duperon was an incorrect name to begin with - as you correctly further clarified above. I will try get that book; may be out of print since it was printed almost 50 yrs ago. I do have an Album Historico de Ponce, but by a different author, that was printed in the last couple of years. I will try straighten out the article based on what you and I have discussed here - unless you can get to it before I do! It would be of most help if we had more info about the official name change such as the date of the change, the authority that ordered the change (the city), a reference to the change "proclamation" text, ect. (I would love to have such info for Marina and Villa streets, etc, in much the same way we have it for Avenida Las Americas.) I hate the tira-y-jala with street names in Ponce!... check out PR-12 and see it is known by some 3 or 4 different names too (Ave. Malecon, Calle E, PR-12, PR-14, Santiago de los Caballeros, uff). Yes, I have lived in Ponce but now I am more or less stateless. Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 17:26, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I can understand why the south would be red (you know, like parque de bombas red and black), but shouldn't the west be yellow, like it is the door to the "Sun"??? You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. There should be a way to post a PDF download link (which, you can initially download it for yourself from your organization's own Website) here on Wikipedia, first on the Talk Page and then inside a Reference in the Article once we're sure everything's squared away with the source.

Thank you in advance. The Mysterious El Willstro (talk) 20:12, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Check again at Talk:Fraternities and sororities. I have found a downloadable version of Phi Kappa Tau's Constitution which we can use as a source. Nevertheless, we would appreciate an additional source on your frat also accepting grad students (as does Phi Kappa Tau, per Constitution). File permission problem with File:Santiagollorens.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Santiagollorens.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 07:30, 16 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Puerto Rico-in-the-Rock

Here is a weird thing. I took a picture inside "The-Hole-the-Rock" a Phoenix landmark and I later realized that the outline resembles the island of Puerto Rico. Isn't that something? Tony the Marine (talk) 20:39, 11 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you my friend. I also enjoyed the book. I haven't been very active as before either, but I too am glad to see the impact that our work on Puerto Rico has had on others. I was recently featured in a PBS documentary titled: "On Two Fronts: Latinos in Vietnam". You can google it if you like and see it. Tony the Marine (talk) 02:51, 5 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Replaceable fair use File:Confederacion antillana.png

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Confederacion antillana.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 23:37, 28 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Zeta mu gamma

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Zeta mu gamma, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. —C.Fred (talk) 19:22, 16 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:33, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
