Main page: articles for improvement

Have you seen the main page is being adapted to include a short section on "Today's articles for improvement" which also links to a longer list. Maybe you could push for at least one article on architecture to be included every month? --Ipigott (talk) 07:35, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I was following that, and actually nominated a few articles a while ago: Acropolis of Athens and Mughal architecture were closed as unsuccessful, I guess for insufficient support, while Ancient Roman architecture is in the holding area - but not yet scheduled. Church (building) is scheduled for the 18th Feb, but not sure if main page testing will commence by than. I believe currently each week one of ten articles has to be from the Arts category, but various architecture articles might find their way in through the history or people sections. --ELEKHH^T 00:42, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

I was also surprised that there has been so little interest in Acropolis of Athens. You may have noticed I have now added inline references throughout. Maybe the section on the restoration project should be updated? Otherwise I think I'll move on to other things. • I've just been looking at Ancient Roman architecture. The problem with this is the same as with the Acropolis: the article was created way back in 2001 when there were no requirements for stating sources, let alone inline citations. As a result, it is virtually devoid of any good references. The best way to deal with the topic would be to get a few recognized books on the subject (historical, cultural, architectural) and completely rewrite it. Unfortunately, this would not be acceptable. So once again it will be a matter of tediously trying to find authentic sources for what is in the existing article. This is certainly not fun to do and is often counter-creative. Furthermore, recent books and publications have a tendency to draw on Wikipedia articles with the result that the vicious circle is reinforced! I think it is the reason why so many old articles on important subjects are suffering from any real editorial interest while topics which have only recently led to new articles often speed up to GA or FA.--Ipigott (talk) 08:08, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Architecture

Concerning your removal of one of the lead pic that was added today: I have been looking for an appropriate image that contrasted a modern city with the wide view of Florence.

The two pictures (and their captions) refer, in one case, to the impact of a single architect and a single structure on a city and on architecture and the architect. The second picture demonstrates very clearly the uniformity created by 20th century structures of the so-called International style. Although in the body of the article, almost every building is individually notable, and such is not the case in that picture, the picture demonstrates a significant trend in architecture.

The article is not simply about significant buildings. In each case, the significant buildings has been selected to demonstrate the aesthetics or principals of a wide region and era, or an architectural philosophy.

I want to emphasise that the image of Florence Cathedral has not been selected simply on the grounds of it being a great representative work of architecture (like the Parthenon, St Peter's Basilica or the Taj Mahal). It is not simply an iconic building. It is the building that launched the notion of the "architect".

The homogeneity of the Manhattan skyline is the antithesis of the image of Florence. Read the two captions. I believe they make the point, without labouring it.

To say again what I said above:

While I agree that the image is not as high quality as it could be, the two images complement each other in terms of colour and appearance. It is the picture of Lower Manhattan which in terms of colour and proportion fits best with the image of Florence. It includes the Twin Towers which were so much part of that landscape.

And while I agree that the image may not show International style as well as an image of a single building might, it illustrates extremely well the affect of the style in transforming cities. Lower Manhattan is "iconic" in that regard.

Isn't it a bit of an overkill to credit the local collaborator (and possibly Eliasson)? Without having checked up on it, I am quite sure that many of the earlier years' recipients have also had (local) collaborators and HLA was for instance credited alone when they received a Trust Award for the same building.Ramblersen (talk) 23:47, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Gun owner map

Red is a good colour for representing the number of firearms, making the map more easily legible, so I wouldn't change that. But I can try to change the lowest category into a lighter yellow, to simplify the colour scheme. Hope that will address your concern. --ELEKHH^T 20:15, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

I don't think I should need to tell you that red is often seen as conveying an element of danger or alarm. I'm sorry red is not to your satisfaction, despite the colour of your signature. Should I think that you're dangerous, or a communist? I don't think so. Colours have multiple meanings, and just because some do associate a particular colour with positive or negative meaning shall not deprive the general public from those colours. This logic would ultimately lead to all maps being B/W, which than would need to be supplied in two versions, original and inverted, so that the potentially biased views on the meaning of black and white do not affect perceptions. hi - per the recent nomination, a few points:

1. From Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion: "Unless the change is non-controversial (such as vandalism or a duplicate), please do not remove the category from pages before the community has made a decision." The purpose of this rule is to allow the community to judge the possible scope of the category before deciding to delete it or not. Thus, for categories under discussion, items can be added at will, provided they qualify, but should not be removed. Johnson was openly gay, and in many many articles about him his sexuality is brought up - so I think he qualifies for the cat.
2. FWIW, I'm not decided myself on whether the cat should be kept, I'm going to wait to hear from others - I just think it should have a fair chance. best, --Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 02:07, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

1. From Wikipedia:Categorization: "Categorization of articles must be verifiable. It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories." (my emphasis) Thus removal was legitimate. 2. Your recent edits contradict your above statement of neutrality. First you consider that removing articles from a CfD is not ok but adding articles to the category is fine. Did you read in the lede, "He was survived by his life partner of 45 years, David Whitney, who died later that year at age 66"? I can add additional sources if needed, but I'm not sure they are needed. for example, this one, already cited in the article [1], says "Flamboyantly gay, he admitted to four "Mrs Johnsons", of whom the last, David Whitney, was his companion for over 40 years."

Secondly, yes I realize this is a bit of a bizarre rule, but that's the standard practice at CFD. When a category is being disputed, it is acceptable to add people to the category (provided the additions are sourced, of course) - and it is *not* allowed to remove them until the CFD is done (after a week or so). Hi Dyveldi, this is evolving very nicely! I think the main improvement which can be still done is reducing the citation overkill: often there are just too many citations at the end of short paragraphs. I see you have been at the list today. A great help. The citation overkill was a choise I made when I started to research the article. I copied text from the sources and just wrote a resymé as I read the original text from the source. And then I rearanged the sentences in a better sequence. What I quit doing was placing the references at the end of the sentences. Some sentences have several sources and some just one and I gave up making reference names so I could sort which source is important to which sentence and just placed them all at the end of the section. Exactly. And yes I will not be able to rush, since I'll have a busy autumn studying archives full time in addition to a full time job, but I do not like to live things obviously unfished. Collaboration is a great thing, but I have seen enough articles left for someone else and sometimes it takes years for someone else to turn up. Having the text criticizes and corrected is invaluable though. That's at least how I find out how to progress!! And then there will be new awards and prices in October, hopefully the previous years will be ok by then. And I have read the sources a couple of times already so I basically know what to look for.

Every article is source for 2 or more sentences. A few sentences have only one source. Most of the sentences have as far as I can remember 2-4 sources. The sources are news stories and newspapers are notoriously unreliable so ideally infomation from newspapers should have at least 2 sources. Also news items tend to become "dead links" as time passes. So yes I conciously "overkilled" as some of the sources will die in the years to come. Hopefully some will survive. I need to give the sources names so they won't be repeated 3-4 times in the reference list. I'll reread an find out which is sourcing what. I will end with more little numbers within the text, but I think up to 3 per sentence will leave the text still readable and also the correct sources far more identifiable. It's just taking the time to sit down and make the matrix, but it is far easier when someone else has read and corrected and I can trust the text to be basically ok !! ツ^ツ Dyveldi  ☯  17:07, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Elekhh, this is bang out of order. You have no right to ensure that your claim is shown, but then do your best to hide my claim that your claim is without foundation, and you've certainly got no business edit warring to ensure that this is the case- you have now reverted two separate editors to ensure that my criticism of your claim is hidden. Whether an image is "free" by Wikipedia's standards has everything to do with the image's candidacy at FPC. I have added a new comment, which is unambiguously relevant to the FPC nomination. Please do not remove this. (It would also help if you actually took a look at what I am saying- your claim is baseless. The English Wikipedia, unless I am very much mistaken, has no policy on FOP.) J Milburn, to clarify a few points:

• "do your best to hide my claim" - is unsubstantiated. I haven't hidden any of your edits, although you did hide one of my comments which was in reply to another editor's question.
• "you have now reverted two separate editors to ensure that my criticism of your claim is hidden" - is unsubstantiated. I haven't hidden any of your criticism. But I insist that my comment which was directly relevant to the FPC, and was a good faith response to a question posed by another editor remains visible.
• "your claim is baseless" - that's your assertion, although I provided evidence which you do not discuss on its merits, but choose to attack me.
• "The English Wikipedia, unless I am very much mistaken, has no policy on FOP" - is misleading. The English Wikipedia does comply with US law, and that includes US FOP.

When you reveal one of your own comments but refuse to reveal my comment which criticises yours, I don't think it's unfair to accuse you of deliberately working to hide my criticism of your claims. You have reverted two separate editors who believe that it is unfair to leave your comment while removing mine. Whether you're actually the one who placed my comment in an archive is, frankly, irrelevant, and any suggestion otherwise is spurious. So, let me ask you a very simple question. Do you believe that images of the Angel of the North can be released freely on the English Wikipedia? Surely, if we follow US law, they cannot. If they cannot, the fact we have a featured picture of the statue is a problem. There is a hideous inconsistency in the way this policy (if it is a policy- I remain unconvinced that it is) is enforced. That's a problem. Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Elekhh. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Upload problem

Yes that is where I always upload images from Flicker (after you introduced me to it). And I have never experienced this problem before. The name would just be Dragør-something since I haven't identified its exact location yet. Ok got it. It was deleted before as after bulk upload the original up-loader thought is not useful or out of scope. So there is no license issue, and if you click "Ignore warning and save anyway" than all should be fine. I uploaded this one at File:Dragør 2004.jpg. Aachen Rathaus

Thanks for catching the "structure" typo. Just letting you know I'm going to add the Aachen category back. The Rathaus sits at the center of the city of Aachen and is one of its most characteristic features. Seems appropriate that it should be in the Aachen category. Majorca Building

Hi Elekhh, I don't intend to get into an edit war here, but I reverted your edit (which you have now reverted back) because my understanding of the definition of a skyscraper is that it is not simply a tall building as we know it today. I referred to the Wiki page Skyscraper where it points out that the term is often applied to buildings that use a steel frame or make a significant impact on the local skyline. This building, built in 1928, is much smaller than they are today, but made a significant impact at the time it was built. Thanks Libby norman (talk) 08:54, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Libby, I understand the historic usage of the term, but if there is no source to back it up I think it shouldn't be used. There were many equally tall buildings built in the period in the same area, and they are not described as skyscrapers either. Architecture

It might be worth putting a protection on that article for a bit. It's been vandalised fairly heavily in the last couple of days. When the removal of over 1,000 words goes uncorrected in a major article for over 30 minutes, despite the diligence of the watchers, it's a problem. What pleasure do the idiots get?

How do you do the protection thing? Does one need to have a green sticker on ones wiki-license to say that one is permitted? Amandajm (talk) 01:37, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

They get the pleasure to see the changes they make, even if only for few minutes. Does not happen on Wikipedias that adopted pending changes to all their article space (German, Hungarian, etc). Improvement requested to Portal:Architecture

Hello. I am conducting an audit of all currently featured portals in order to determine which ones meet the modern standards and which ones need improvement. While Portal:Architecture is in excellent condition, there are only 11 selections in Portal:Architecture/Selected picture, while the modern standards look to have at least 20. While there are plenty of options to choose from at Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Places/Architecture, I am not nearly as well versed in the area as you appear to be, and this is a portal you are actively maintaining, so I would very much rather you be the person choosing the images. If you'd rather me do it, I would be happy to, but I wanted to offer it to you first. Please also note that I have added an archive/nomination link to the 11 that exist currently, as every other section had one.

Hope I'm not stepping on any toes.

Sure, will add 9 more images, as this was on my todo list anyway. While there are indeed plenty of FPs of buildings, many of them are of very limited notability in architecture history. I'm also trying to achieve good global coverage, and select images of a format (landscape) and colour scheme (dominant blue) that fit the portal's layout. If it helps, I have absolutely no issue with you using Commons FPs, as those are also of a high technical standard, and all of the additonal requirements that FPs have on English Wikipedia are largely irrelevant to portals. Delisting feature picture

You have voted on the delisting of US Postal Currency 5 cent 1862 1863. Some new information has been presented. Would you consider reviewing your vote?

The deletion request was started because it was assumed that File:US-Fractional (1st Issue)-$0.05-Fr.1231.jpg was the same currency as File:US Postal Currency 5 cent 1862 1863.jpg. The Fr.1231 currency was in better condition so it should replace "US Postal Currency 5 cent 1862 1863" as the featured image. They are not the same. The older file is of type Fr.1230 because it has an ABC monogram on the back. As a security measure, the US Post Office had the front and back of the bills printed by two companies. The back of the Fr.1230 was printed by the American Banknote Company and their ABC monogram appears in the lower right corner. Java

Big problem with anything to do with indonesia is the potential - if we had active contributory editors to something other than soccer, the potential utility of regional geography categories far outweighs the argument for merging into single island ones. The question is dumbing down and reducing the number of potential fillable categories presupposes an absent or non existent set of editors who actually help expand the Indonesian project set of articles. Maybe it will never happen (either way), and it will bubble along with an ever increasing set of articles about non notable soccer players, and the geographical features of indonesia will remain a mysterious unfinished project...

Tidar is not and has never been a mountain. We need a hill and not mountain category in the geography of indonesia.

Similarly Turgo and Plawangan are not mountains, so thats 3 that could exist in a not-mountain also not small hill of Indonesia. satusuro 13:47, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
