Proposed deletion of Freddie Sessler

The article Freddie Sessler has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (biographies) requirement. One single deep coverage source, a fanzine ([http://www.loveyouliverollingstones.com/the-happening-freddy-sessler-worlds-oldest-rolling-stones-groupie-and-keith-richards-best-friend) does not seem sufficient. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back. Thank you,

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. DYK for Ganton Street

Caroline Charles

I added the extra information on Caroline Charles because, as the article stood, she was born in Cairo and in the nest sentence, went locally to Swindon Art School, which did not quite add up! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:33, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I probably intended to come back to the article, but there's so much other new content to be created - it's so easy to get distracted. Edwardx (talk) 08:44, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Fore Street (London)

First bomb of WW2. Not sure if that was the whole of London or just the City of London but still quite interesting. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:51, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Wikimania

Are you doing any stand-up at Wikimania? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:50, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

No, plenty of sitting down. I'll be hosting Auditorium 2 on Sunday - if you want to heckle me, I'll try to come up with a good put down. Are you coming along? Edwardx (talk) 22:52, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Just reviewing the events now. I was at the opening earlier and am on the WMUK stand Sat morning. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:56, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
I shall be there on all three days. And running an editathon at the Zoo on Tuesday afternoon (1000 monkeys on typewriters - that's what happens when you pay editors peanuts). Edwardx (talk) 23:03, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Our whole system is based on the monkeys on typewriters system isn't it? Just make sure none of them takes a selfie. We are already being sued for the last one. I am going to try to photograph some of these London streets on one of the days with my toy camera. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:14, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
On Tuesday, after visiting WMUK, I photographed Whitecross and Fann, Some Golden Lane, bit of Goswell and Aldresgate, Charterhouse Sq, CHarterhouse St, Long Lane, Middle St, Cloth Fair, St John's St, St John Lane, some Cowcross. And Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Just have to find time to upload them. Edwardx (talk) 23:39, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Still to be done: Silk St, Ropemaker, Chiswell, Beech, Fore St, Monkwell Sq, etc etc Edwardx (talk) 23:41, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Hopped out at Ganton St on the way home and tried to shoot a video, but the result was rubbish - hand-held walking along, just made me dizzy looking at it. Edwardx (talk) 23:44, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
You need an army of 1000 monkeys to help you out. You could be their King. I was only thinking recently that I should visit Ganton Street. Stand and pan is the knack with video. But then you have to convert to ogg which is difficult to do well. Here is one I made earlier: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1903_Burnley_Ironworks_company_steam_engine_in_use.ogv Philafrenzy (talk) 23:50, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
I did a lot of streaming video encoding 15 years ago, but very little experience of shooting it. Much more to it than just still images, that's for sure. Edwardx (talk) 00:01, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
We have almost none (compared to still) because of the need for it to be in a free codec. Mp4 etc isn't free and neither are most of the codecs in use. ogg is but you have to convert to it using various doubtful programs available on home-made looking websites. There was an RFC about this problem a while ago. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:06, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
And indeed a whole session on this Friday in Technology II. Philafrenzy (talk) 01:07, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
I'll be attending at least some of that. Edwardx (talk) 07:15, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes good to catch up with you again Gareth. (I suspect Edward is having a short wiki-break, which would be entirely understandable) Westminster library? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:55, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes. I'm just realising the paucity of so many articles w/out refs from the Times; astonishing really. Club de Monte-Carlo de l'Elite de la Philatélie worth a DYK surely? Gareth E Kegg (talk) 00:54, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
Don't forget http://wellcomelibrary.org/using-the-library/how-to/databases-a-z/ You have to visit with ID to pick up but it is then mostly available remotely. I think Club de Monte-Carlo would indeed be a valid article. I thought I had done it but that turned out to be Grand Prix Club. Philatelists love giving each other awards and joining exclusive clubs, or so I have been told... Philafrenzy (talk) 01:33, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Halliwell's Television Companion

A monkey selfie

I have just acquired this, final edition 1986, similar to the film guides and a RS in an area that is a morass of unreliable sources. British and U.S. TV. Let me know if I can look anything up for you. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:00, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

I loved his film guide when I was a boy. I'll let you know as and when help is needed. Edwardx (talk) 18:06, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
It seems authoritative. Reading between the lines, he was unhappy with earlier editions and did this final expanded one to get it up to the right standard. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:48, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
Are we planning to do that with Wikipedia? Gareth E Kegg (talk) 20:05, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
No, we have decided to use the infinite monkey system instead. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:25, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
That was the plan for Tuesday's London Zoo editathon (Wikimania fringe), but the monkeys were too busy taking selfies. Edwardx (talk) 10:36, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Leaving your camera around in the hope of finding another photogenic monkey? (Pheasantry?) Philafrenzy (talk) 12:08, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Suicidal green rabbits

We need more of them on Wikipedia, particularly in hooks. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:50, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Very nice. Maybe it was David Litvinoff. I'd guess he would happily claim it, regardless. You have quite transformed that article. Edwardx (talk) 22:28, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, there's more to do but I must try to finish the sensational life of Betty May too. What was she doing during the war? I would not be at all surprised to find that she was with SOE or something like that. I know who owned the rabbit but thought it better not to include the name. It was not Litvinoff. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:32, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Anne Hollander is not on your list. She thought clothes revealed more than they concealed. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:39, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
She is now, and another good hook idea. Thought I had added her, but apparently not. Was the rabbit Chas and/or Dave? Edwardx (talk) 22:45, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
I don't believe it was a talking rabbit, though it evidently thought it could fly. Perhaps it was trying to avoid arrest for drugs by Norman Pilcher. It was owned by a minor figure that might make an interesting article if I could scrape enough facts together to do it, but who may not be dead. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:51, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Peter Russell and others

Thanks so much Edwardx – great to see these nominations and they are much appreciated. By the way, I think I've found another excellent source for Peter Russell, this one a contemporaneous account...seems even at the time he carried an air of dark mystery and wouldn't tell reporters where he was from, other than to hint darkly about bloodline from Norfolk and Huguenot on mother's side (I do so hope he finished off that reveal with a 'dontcha know' or a 'what'). Plan to incorporate the source into the article – he sounds more 'characterful' with every line I read. They don't make 'em like that anymore! Libby norman (talk) 00:00, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

It was a "Did You Know" nomination from someone else that inspired me to contribute more new articles, so it seems like a good way of encouraging and rewarding the contributions of others. And you're producing quality work that really should get a wider audience. I look forward to reading more about Peter Russell. Edwardx (talk) 08:54, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I had noticed that (well, there are 2300 pages in my watchlist), and it is broadly a good thing. I think we try to honour the dead and avoid too much dirt, or hagiography. Thanks. I'm sure that there are still some more grade II pubs out there in London to add. Edwardx (talk) 23:37, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Undoubtedly. Endell Street Military Hospital could be a good hook for Endell Street. I have some Betty May related content to add too. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:42, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Betty gets everywhere. Just "found" The Old Shades in Whitehall. Edwardx (talk) 23:45, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
I doubt there was anyone in those circles she didn't know. What will you do if you ever run out of pubs? You could move to Dublin I suppose. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:49, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
And now the Red Lion, Whitehall - you've got me started again. After pubs, there are plenty of listed churches needing articles, then more streets, houses, etc. The London Tourist Board should employ us. Edwardx (talk) 23:53, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
I will skip the churches, I would feel hypocritical, but the rest, as you indicate, is wide open. Endell Street is about to get interesting. It was the home to many seedy clubs. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:56, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I'm also reluctant to do anything to promote the "opium of the masses", especially when I can encourage alcoholism instead. Just started the Plumbers Arms, Belgravia, which has a "Lucky" Lucan connection. Talking of seedy clubs, I've just started The Reno, Manchester which I used to visit in my student days, while we waited for The Haçienda to open.Edwardx (talk) 00:21, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of The Reno, Manchester

Hello Edwardx,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged The Reno, Manchester for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. ubiquity (talk) 01:21, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I've added a referenced claim to notability. Edwardx (talk) 10:47, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge in Chingford

Edward,

There was already an photo of the Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge - it is on the main Chingford page as a thumbnail.

Peter

  • Hello Peter. I had to visit Chingford yesterday, and as September is Wiki Loves Monuments month, I photographed several listed buildings. I'm now creating articles for those without, including Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge. Generally, I think it's best to use up-to-date photos, so that our readers can see things as they now look. Of course, if there's space, it is a good idea to include several photos, perhaps including how they looked in the past. You are of course most welcome to contribute to any of the new Chingford articles that I'm starting. Edwardx (talk) 11:27, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

The Caravan Club (Endell Street)

Seems deserving of a DYK, though the hook may have to be chosen with care. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:29, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Added to the list. I do like the coded euphemisms, and "All night gaiety" is a short, pithy quote. Clearly, a relatively early use of today's near-standard use of gay for being homosexual. Indeed, the history section of gay confirms this. Interesting to contrast with the "old" usage of gay in the 1934 film The Gay Divorcee, a title I've always found amusing. It could be interesting for our readers to learn that the alternative (now mainstream) usage of gay has been around a long time. Edwardx (talk) 11:39, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
There's also "Dancing to Charlie" but I don't know what that means! It's ironic that if the club had not been closed down by the police we wouldn't have the material to write a proper article. All credit to somebody who saw fit to keep the details for the National Archives. There must have been many clubs of all kinds that were just as noteworthy but simply passed away without much record. I will finish it off later.
Incidentally, be wary of Gangland Soho as a source, almost everything in it is scraped from better sources elsewhere. I commend to you UK Press Online via Westminster Libraries which contains the original press reports of cases. They often contradict later secondary sources and did so both with this article and the court cases of Betty May. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:43, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Davington Priory

Apparently is now owned by Bob Geldof (perhaps you knew). Did Christopher Gibbs sell it to Geldof? Philafrenzy (talk) 10:51, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Didn't know about Geldof. I'd be surprised if he owned it as early as 1982, but who knows (maybe we soon will know...)?
This article talks about "three decades", so it looks very much like he bought it from Gibby. Edwardx (talk) 11:02, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
He would have been 31 so old enough but as you indicate probably not rich enough. I will look into it, Peaches got married there. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:04, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Think he was rich enough. And NYT article says that they Bob and Chris were friends, so I think we can confidently say that he sold it to him. I will be bold. Edwardx (talk) 11:10, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Like Jagger, Geldof was not from money so he could buy the house, and the contents too? Giving instant social status? (just speculating) Philafrenzy (talk) 11:18, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Seems very plausible. Edwardx (talk) 23:42, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
That was (is) his game I think. Is that David Litvinoff's bicycle outside the Temperance Billiard Hall? He left it there in the 1960s and never returned to collect it? Philafrenzy (talk) 23:55, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Normally RBKC remove anything unsightly rather quickly, but they may have mistaken it for a sculptural work. 23:59, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Endell Street for a DYK? Philafrenzy (talk) 00:12, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Now on the list. Edwardx (talk) 00:16, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Do you still want them? Philafrenzy (talk) 00:19, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
DYK nom ideas? Yes. But, I'm struggling to find time for all the QPQ reviews. Edwardx (talk) 00:29, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
OK. I don't know if you have noticed but the article count thingy has jumped up three. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:33, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Clifford Hall (painter)

Could you add this one? If you have time it is worth scrolling through http://www.mutualart.com/Artist/Clifford-Hall/6C21733B52DB9DEA/Artworks for the faceless women. Thanks. Philafrenzy (talk) 01:18, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

The faceless women are bizarre. Perhaps he had "issues". Added to the list. Edwardx (talk) 12:32, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
"Issues" doesn't begin to cover it! You can see it starting early with the head down or turned away then faceless by the end. I couldn't even guess what was behind it. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:46, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
Cherchez la femme already has an article. Edwardx (talk) 13:14, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Referrals

I've seen for some time that you are one of the very few good editors working with articles on organizations and their executives. I screen a great many incoming drafts in this area, and I try to detect and remove all undeclared paid editing. I sometimes come across those that seem so important that they might be worth rescuing. I don't have enough time for the mall, and I try to concentrate on those most familiar to me, educational institutions and their faculty and companies in the field of biomedicine. . I'd like to refer a few others to you; I'll mention just a few from time to time here if it's OK with you.. or ping you. DGG ( talk ) 18:57, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

DGG, thank you for your kind words. With Wikipedia's success and ubiquity, paid editing is booming, and we (volunteers) are struggling to cope with it. I'd rather be creating new content, but over the years, more and more of my editing time is spent on dealing with paid/COI editing. I would be happy to help where I can. I don't have a particular business sector, but prefer stuff where there are English language sources, or at least where I have some feel for the reliability (or otherwise) of the sources. I try to avoid stuff from countries such as India and Nigeria - Sisyphean tasks have limited appeal. I am interested in very rich people (especially billionaires), and in companies/organizations that receive relatively little coverage compared to their significance.
