WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  •   Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  •   Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  •   BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  •   Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  •   Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  •   Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  •   PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  •   Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  •   Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  •   Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  •   Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  •   Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  •   Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  •   SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  •   Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  •   Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  •   Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  •   Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:32, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

  • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. Possible mentor/guide?

Hi, @Ealdgyth! First off, I'd like to say that I'm a huge fan of your work on Medieval England. It's so refreshing to see someone with such expertise contribute to Wikipedia so frequently and helpfully. In fact, that's why I'd like to talk to you. Recently, I reached out to Iridescent about them possibly mentoring me (Wikipedia:FAM) for my first planned major FA nomination, which is for Edward I of England. I've been gathering sources and working on the article, and I'd like to nominate it as a featured article in the coming weeks/months. Iridescent said they were unable to assist me fully, but pointed me towards you as a great person to guide me with this article. Could I get your opinion on working with me? If not, that is completely alright! Thanks, Unlimitedlead (talk) 02:39, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Sorry it took me a day or two to reply, I'm ... pretty busy. I'm less engaged with the FA process than I used to, so you're probably better off talking with Dudley or @MikeChristie: for guidance on the process. Ealdgyth (talk) 14:39, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
@Ealdgyth Thank you for responding. Good luck with whatever you're going through! Unlimitedlead (talk) 14:50, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
Just general busy-ness. The second half of the year is always busy for me.. Ealdgyth (talk) 15:26, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

Thanks

...For your arbitration guide. Your stewardship of the content-creation community (unfortunate that that is even a subgroup on WP) is much inline with my priorities for voting in arb com elections. Thus, your guide proved immensely helpful. Best –  Aza24 (talk) 21:06, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Thank you. As for the AN discussion - you may want to look at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Black Friday (1910)/archive1 to understand why I'm not rushing to SchroCat's defense. His behavior has been... iffy for a long time. In fact, he's one of the reasons I'm much less active at FAC than I was in the past (there are other reasons also - not all related to Wikipedia, but there's a reason I spend less of my diminished wiki-time at FAC and the tone and tenor of a few of the long term contributors there is why) Ealdgyth (talk) 21:26, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
I suppose archives like that make me glad I arrived at WP at a later date... this whole AN conversation seems too deeply rooted in past experiences, which I could not pretend to fully judge. I've crossed my comment out accordingly, though I don't think I can support the measure, even if I'm not opposing it. Aza24 (talk) 22:16, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
I'm not fully behind the CBAN either, mostly because I think it's not going to fix anything (they will likely keep editing without signing ...) but also slightly because I'm not totally convinced its to that point but it's close. At some point, the incivility just gets to be too much and drives too many people away. Wikipedia isn't a battleground and we shouldn't treat it as such. I'll show my age, but we shouldn't think we are back in usenet days with alt.argueabouteverything ... Ealdgyth (talk) 22:23, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi. Leaving this message to let you know that I have requested George Andrew Davis Jr. to be ran as Today's Featured Article (TFA) on February 10, 2023, the anniversary of his death. As Ed!, the FAC nominator of that article, is already semi-retired, I am also messaging you this one, for you were the other editor who contributed a lot during the process. Please feel free to leave a comment in the request template to either support or express your concerns about this. Regards, Vida0007 (talk) 22:08, 13 December 2022 (UTC).

Gloucester Cathedral and Gloucester Abbey

Hi Ealdgyth, Compliments of the Season, and I hope you are keeping well. I’m not sure our paths have directly crossed (?), although I see we both rocked up here in 2007! I’ve been doing a bit of an expansion of Gloucester Cathedral and plan to do some more. I became a little confused by the article we have on Gloucester Abbey, which you started in 2007. Both articles are, of course, referencing the same historic foundation, although I appreciate that the abbey was an earlier incarnation. I was wondering what you would think about a merge? The Abbey article is stronger on the early history, there’s overlap in the burials, and I think the Cathedral has more coverage of the architecture, especially the listed buildings which I’ve been working on first. Let me know what you think. All the very best. KJP1 (talk) 16:58, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2023 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2023 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:16, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

I pinched your card!

Hi Ealdgyth, We've never interacted, so far as I know. I was spreading New Year's joy with the fireworks card and came across your lovely Janus one on a talk page that we both contributed to. I thought it was great! So I pinched it and sent it off to others. Hope you don't mind. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 02:51, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

Thorough source check

Dear Ealdgyth. Thank you very much for your good wishes, which I return. Nice of you to have thought of me. I first met you through the thorough source check you did on User:Buidhe's "The Holocaust in Slovakia". I feel that the citations in articles submitted for review should be more reviewer-friendly. I believe that sources often pass unchecked simply because it is (1) so difficult and time-consuming to find and read the source and (2) to guess what kind of information the source is supposed to support so that the reviewer can search the source for the relevant passage that carries this information. Regarding (1), surely only in exceptional cases can a reviewer be expected to visit a public library to check a source. Texts available on the Internet should be preferred. URLs should be given. If needed, the nominator should provide a translation of the relevant passage. If possible, a reliable source that is not available on the Internet should be replaced with one that is. With regard to (2), page ranges should be restricted to the minimum needed, individually for each citation rather than a large range and many citations pointing to that same range. A location should be given also in lengthy texts citet on web sites. I think reviewers should be less hesitant to demand precise and checkable citations. See e.g. the GA review of the article Lucien Brouha that I have in progress and where the nominator, User:Schwede66 is very helpful. He changed the citation style and restricted ranges to help me. Best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 10:43, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

Many "print" sources (academic books, journal articles) are available as PDFs. I write almost all articles from such sources, I don't remember the last time I used an actually paper source. PDFs of course can be shared on request with those checking references. I do not agree with dumbing down references, or eschewing high quality references, because they are not available online without a paywall. (t · c) buidhe 11:12, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
