Box Office Story additions

I have questions about this source. Are these numbers cumulative or based on first releases? For The Green Room (film) I had previously added that it sold about 30,000 tickets, based on information from Truffaut's biography. This number is much different from your 161,293 admissions, and would contradict all information that the film was a flop (although it still shows the film as being Truffaut's least profitable). Hi. I misspoke and was mixing your edits up with someone else who added the 1991 US box office on Kane. The French admissions numbers are still in the article in a section that talks about the films release in France in 1946. As far as The Green Room thanks for the info and I'll expand on it in the article so there's no contradiction between it and the infobox.--Deoliveirafan (talk) 00:16, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Different aspect to the same subject - French box office figures are not really relevant to the gross of American films. I recommend that you remove these figures that you added to infoboxes, so that other editors don't have to. BMK (talk) 11:29, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Ken, I can understand your position but genuinely believe that French box office figures add a fascinating dimension to a page's entry for American films. However I won't press the point and will endeavour to only use it for American films were I can specifically illustrate it. Thanks for your interest Dutchy85 (talk) 11:58, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
The problem is that the French figures don't really tell us anything except how well the film did in France, and specifically don't project into giving us an idea about what the film grossed (either in the US or overall) or whether the film was a B.O. success. Every country has particular tastes, and French taste in film is notoriously at odds with U.S. tastes. So, I would say that the French figures are really only relevant for French films and shouldn't be used for American films unless, as you say, you have additional info to connect it up. Ken I completely respect that point of view but do feel that wikipedia can be overly US-centric at times and France is one of the biggest cinema markets in the world but agree it should only be used for specific purposes eg to show how internationally popular a Hollywood film is eg The Great Dictator, or how a French-set Hollywood film wasn't popular in France - thanks again for your interest and support Dutchy85 (talk) 01:45, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Citation formatting

Hi Duchy85 - I've noticed you've added some citations to film articles. This is welcome, but there are some embedded links that aren't right. for example, in The Double Event (1911 film), you've added "newspaper=[[Punch |Punch (Melbourne, Vic. : 1900 - 1918; 1925)]]". This actually links to a disambiguation page. An appropriate link here would be "newspaper=[[Melbourne Punch|Punch]]" - and the rest is not needed because you already have a 'location=Melbourne', and a publication date.

Similarly, on 16 March you added a couple of links in citations to George Wallace (Australian comedian): one was "newspaper=[[Table Talk |Table Talk (Melbourne, Vic. : 1885 - 1939)]]", another was "newspaper=[[News |News (Adelaide, SA : 1923 - 1954)]]". Both of these wikilinks go to the wrong destination; I think what you needed here are "newspaper=[[Table Talk (newspaper)|Table Talk]]" and "newspaper=[[The News (Adelaide)|The News]]".

I also have a question about some other citations. For example, in Something of Value, you've added "<ref>Grace Kelly's Future Blooming; Lana Turner Film Found by Thorpe Schallert, Edwin. Los Angeles Times (1923-Current File) [Los Angeles, Calif] 01 Apr 1955: B11</ref>". What is the meaning of '(1923-Current File)'? And would it be possible to format the citation in the usual manner as "<ref>"Grace Kelly's Future Blooming; Lana Turner Film Found by Thorpe" Schallert, Edwin. ''Los Angeles Times'' 1 April 1955: B11</ref>"? That is: with the article title in quotes, the newspaper italicised, omitting the location when it's already included in the newspaper title, and omitting the leading zero on the date, and not abbreviating the month - and why the embedded line break at the end of the article title? Or even better, to provide the citation information as parameters to the {{cite news}} template, so no manual formatting would be needed.

Colonies Chris, the citations I used come from one of two sources - Trove, the database for the National Library of Australia, which has a special citation for wikipedia which I use. I've just gone to Trove and seen the citation it generates for the reference to Melbourne Punch I mentioned, and it is still producing the entirely incorrect wikilinks I described. This needs to be taken up with Trove right away - it's corrupting Wikipedia with a lot of erroneous links. Do you know if they consulted with anyone before supplying these terrible citations?
With ProQuest, obviously there's a problem with the cite I mentioned above, and there's a more general problem with the formatting - it's not like anything normally used in Wikipedia, it doesn't fit the style guidelines for citations, and it has this mysterious (1923-current file) component, which appears to have no value whatever. I'm sure if you contacted Trove themselves they'd be able to address it - I was sticking to their formatting because I thought it was the original one. The (1923-current file) type things comes from, I think, the fact sometimes there can be more than one say Los Angeles Times, a Los Angeles Times that ran from 1890-1911 and the one that runs from 1923 to current (I'm making that up as a example - Ijust think that's the reason why) Dutchy85 (talk) 11:49, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for this background. I've discovered that much the same concerns were raised with Trove as recently as March, but with no success. I've just raised these issues again in their forum, so we'll see if that approach has any better luck. There's nothing I can do about ProQuest as I don't have an account. I don't think the (1923-current file) stuff can be to do with the newspaper itself, as citations from other papers, such as the New York Times, also have exactly the same. Hi there. I noticed that you're updating information in martial arts films. Thanks for finding and adding this data. I made a few tweaks. Generally, we use ranges when there's conflicting data. For example, if one source reports a budget of $1 million, and another source reports $2 million, we'd say $1–2 million, followed by both citations. In the infobox, we generally prefer to list the worldwide gross, so if you find a film that only lists the US gross, you could probably just replace that value with the worldwide gross. If the values for the same data (both US or both worldwide), you should use a range. Also, you should be a bit careful of copying too much directly from sources. It's difficult to avoid that when you're citing a direct quotation, but you shouldn't copy more than necessary. Anyway, thanks for updating these articles. They tend to languish. Hi, as you probably noticed on your watchlist, I was going through Australian film stubs and happened upon some created by you that were lacking context. In the future please do try to include more information such as the name of the director, starring actors, general plot, awards, etc. While you added some information to infoboxes, it is pertinent to include it in the prose because infoboxes are only meant as a at-a-glance version of the text itself and are collapsed by default on mobile devices, a huge portion of our readers. It also does a disservice to our readers because they come to Wikipedia expecting to find information on the subjects where in the cases of very small articles they'd be better served by the imdb links at the bottom. As you are a frequent editor at Alan Ladd, this is let you know that the 'Unmade Films' section of that article is being considered for Deletion.
If you or other editors believe there is a valid reason for its inclusion in that bio. entry, then you or those editors should add an introductory paragraph at the beginning of the section explaining what it is that the list represents -- that is, explaining what exactly constitutes an "unmade film", so as to warrant a filmography-like list of same in a movie actor's bio. (as opposed to, say, brief mention of certain key roles the actor was considered for, but never got, in the text or body of the article).
Long, official-looking lists of this sort (or "Unmade Filmographies", if you will) -- if truly notable at all, or worthy of inclusion as part of the biographical articles on actors in Wikipedia -- could turn into almost endless listings of all sorts of failed concepts, unmade scripts, cancelled productions, etc., etc.

Request regarding film articles

Hi Dutchy85, and thanks for all the film articles you have been creating. I'd like to remind you that when you create an article, it's important to then wikilink the title of the film in the articles on each of the cast members (and director, etc.) who have Wikipedia articles (assuming the film is mentioned in their article). Control+F is useful in quickly finding out on each article whether the film is mentioned. This wikilinking action helps people know that the article now exists and does not need to be created, and it helps prevent the film article from being an unlinked orphan, and it helps readers who are reading the article on the actor. Contextual information

Hi just another friendly reminder: please try to include more contextual information in your articles. Most importantly every film article should include who the director is in the first sentence, as well as the country of origin (if it's simple to determine) of the film. Film titles should also be italicized, and you can do that using {{Infobox film}} or {{Italic title}}. Lastly it would help to add the {{WikiProject film}} template to the talk pages of the articles so they can be tracked and rated. (See the template documentation for the parameters; though for stubs you can assess them as stubs) Lastly you should try to include links to the newly created articles. Happy editing. Very short articles

As an experienced editor, why do you create articles like this, this and this with no categories, incorrectly formatted refs & external links and no other information (director, cast, infobox, etc)? Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 11:59, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

I've tried to talk to this editor before about the context problem and just now again before I saw your message. It really doesn't take that long to get the director and cast from IMDB (which they also link), and while infoboxes aren't required they're pretty standard on film articles and don't take that long either. I encourage Dutchy85 to take more time with each article, preferring quality over quantity, (what use is a film article if it hardly gives any information?) and to use the preview button to make sure there aren't any errors in their articles. Thanks OC. I know that Dutchy has been working on articles linked to Sam Katzman (as have I), and I create short articles, but they do have the basics, such as this one, for example. Yeah other than the thing about context they have the basic structure down such as by including appropriate links. Dutchy85, your articles are very much appreciated so please don't take my advice the wrong way, I'm just trying to help you create better articles and I'll try to help as I can such as I did at I Surrender Dear (1948 film). (I even created I Surrender Dear (disambiguation) for it) I'd be more than happy to lead you to appropriate resources for things like syntax or manuals of style so please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks for the efforts you're putting in on several articles, adding pieces of information. Quick thing, when adding a reference, can you please not simply put a raw link, or an incomplete reference. You can check out proper formatting styles at WP:CIT. When you add a fact, and reference a book for example, please include a page number. Again, thanks for your efforts. Proposed deletion of Tough Assignment (documentary)

 

The article Tough Assignment (documentary) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This film exists, yes. But I see nothing to make it Notable. It's not included in the Filmography in Ken G. Hall. It's been put into the template, so will have a heap of incoming links, but to what? Neither source gives any more information than the existence, and documentary nature, of this film. A redirect to a fuller Filmography, whether as part of the man's article or as a standalone, would be more useful.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
