Possibly unfree images
editHi Debsalmi. Four images you uploaded appear to have conflicting licensing information - you claim to release them under the GFDL but also assert they are owned by Against Intuition, Inc. and protected by copyright and trademark. If you have permission from Against Intuition, Inc. to release these images under the GFDL you will need to provide evidence to Wikipedia through our OTRS channel - this is to ensure we don't have people asserting they have the right to release images under licensing when that is not the case. The images have been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. You can comment on the discussion about their copyright status individually at:
- Wikipedia:Possibly_unfree_images/2008_March_27#Image:Wot_logo_slogan_medium.png

If you don't understand this or need help understanding next steps please leave a message for me at the bottom of my talk page. Thanks -- SiobhanHansa 19:35, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Debsalmi - Thanks for leaving the message for me. Don't feel bad that you find it confusing - it is confusing. Unfortunately we just haven't found a way to make it any simpler because there are some significant legal implications and there are a lot of choices people can make.
- From what you say it sounds like the company is prepared to release the images under a free license. Which you choose is up to the company. From our perspective WOT would ideally dual license the images under the GFDL and CC-by-sa-3.0 OR release them into the public domain. There are some different implications with each and it's up to WOT to decide which they are happiest with.
- Once you have decided which license(s) WOT want to release them under you just need to have that documented in an appropriate way. There are two standard ways to do this - either WOT can put the images on their website with a clear statement that they are released under the whatever license - this works fine until someone decides to redesign the website in a years time and forgets that thse particular images are up there like that so licensing can be checked out! A more stable alternative is to have someone with the appropriate authority (which sounds like you) email Wikimedia Foundation's "permissions" (permissions AT wikimedia DOT org) system from a company email address listing the images and stating that they are released under the appropriate license/into the public domain. The text needs to clearly state which images are being released (include the full urls from the image pages in the email. Sample text for the release under dual licensing can be found here. If you go this route you should receive an email back from Wikimedia that has a "ticket number". This is the number used to track that permission has been received. That number then gets added to the image page so the images can be tied back to the official permission email you sent.
- Once you've received the response from the permissions email we need to update the "Possibly unfree images" cases I started (see above) to let people know the permissions have been sent so the images aren't deleted in the meantime. Just adding a comment "permission sent to OTRS - ticket number #######" should be enough. If you have difficulty with that let me know. (OTRS is what the ticketing system used for permissions is known as).
- Just a heads up regarding one of the images - it is highly unusual for a company to release its logo under a free license. There are some parts of branding you just don't normally want to give people permission to play with. There are other ways for Wikipedia to use logos (under fair use for example) so the fact there are a lot of logos in our articles does not mean they have been released in this way. WOT might want to take a closer look at whether or not they want to release that particular image.
- Hope this makes sense. Let me know if you need more assistance at all. -- SiobhanHansa 12:23, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Image source problem with Image:Wot logo slogan medium.png
editThe Fair Use info looks really good on Image:Wot logo slogan medium.png. Thanks for your effort; I know it takes a bit of time to fill in all the "paperwork". (EhJJ)TALK 11:34, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:WOT Web of Trust - Search Screen.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:WOT Web of Trust - Search Screen.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. NotifyBot (talk) 14:55, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Wot logo largel.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Wot logo largel.jpg, which you've sourced to Against Intuition, Inc. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 02:05, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 24
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Avast!, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Street. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Wikipedia and copyright
editHello Debsalmi, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. —George8211 / T 18:23, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, Deborah. My name is Maggie. I just wanted to add to the note above that I realize as an employee of AVAST you might be confused that we can't except content you add from your employer's websites and publications. Unless the material is visibly and publicly given a compatible license, we can't, not unless a representative of your company writes in to verify license using a release such as the one at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. Since we have no means of verifying identity on account creation, such permissions must be external to our site (that is, on the original site or via email). We also need to be absolutely sure that copyright holders understand the terms of release, since material placed here is open for reuse (even commercially) and modification so long as the terms of the license are met. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:38, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Maggie. Thanks for the note. I will ask our lawyers to write the Declaration of consent, but can you please specify which content you are referring to? I think that declaration refers to images and other non-text media, right? What do you think triggered this? All I did today was add some text and links to 3rd party references, so I don't think it violated any copyright or plagiarized the 3rd party. Thanks for your help. Avast Software and conflicts of interest
editHello, Debsalmi. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.
All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.
If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:
- Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
- Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
- Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.
Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.
For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.
Please bear in mind that Wikipedia does not allow advertisement, so internal guidelines for your company's particular way of stylization of your company name is not directly applicable on Wikipedia. You should follow applicable Wikipedia guidelines and policies, and not your own corporate ones. -- 67.70.32.190 (talk) 05:09, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
Avast (software company) & Avast (security softwares) articles, we need both.
editHi Debsalmi, I see that you are involved in the redaction of this Avast article.
Also, please read my comment on : Talk:Avast_(software_company)#Disambiguation_.28again.29
We have to solve this interwiki problem.
I really suggest to create two different pages, like we have on the french wiki, about Avast. Only then we could adjust the links between the various languages.
